Bathurst - Musical opportunities for everyone What a busy Term 2! Great participation in workshops & master classes including Sydney Conservatorium students and David Miller, the experienced and inspiring Richard Morphew who coached 14 singing students and the ‘music4film’ composition sessions. An enthusiastic audience filled All Saints’ Cathedral for the Tedeschi/Hunt Piano Duo; a unique experience with two grand pianos and two amazing jazz pianists. ‘Your Space’ Student Performance Opportunities continue to proved valuable stage etiquette & playing experiences for Mitchell Conservatorium students. The keenly anticipated school workshop days, Monster Band Day and Awesome Orchestra Day, this year attracted a combined total of around 300 students and included participants who travelled to Bathurst from Lithgow, Blayney, Trundle and Parkes. At the beginning of June, two Youth Ensemble Concerts showcased the wide variety of ensembles available at the Con and a couple of weeks later the annual Early Childhood Concert themed ‘In the Bush’ provided a fun interactive session for pre-schoolers and their families including instrument tryouts. For some time the old brown chairs around the Bathurst buildings have needed replacing; I am sure everyone agrees that the new black chairs are a great improvement! During the school holidays the upper storey and stairwell of the West Wing will get a new coat of paint which will brighten up this area. Best wishes for a wonderful Term 3 Fiona Thompson Executive Director
Lithgow - A long awaited face lift Visitors to Lithgow Division’s “Sunnybank” building will notice a few changes. The old cupboards at the end of the hall have been removed, the wall painted & a new Energysaver heater installed. This heater replaces the wall furnaces that were first installed about 40 years ago. Our thanks to Allan and Jane Woodrow for volunteering their assistance to remove the cupboards and paint the wall. Also to Chris Milroy for undertaking the necessary electrical work. The toilet area has also undergone an upgrade with the installation of a new dual flush toilet and a new hand basin. In addition a new hot water service has been installed. Our thanks to Lithgow Friends for funding this work. In the near future the building will also be getting a new roof. The replacement of the roof is funded by a Community Building Partnership grant through NSW Government Office of Communities. Our thanks to local member Paul Toole for supporting our grant application. Annette Milroy Lithgow Director
Lachlan - Busy & thriving musical scene The Lachlan Division has a long association with the Sydney Conservatorium & once again hosted their Grand Western Tour. The strings & woodwind ensemble performed an eclectic mix of classical music including Telemann, Handel, Mozart & Beethoven. for concert held on Monday 29 April. This was well received by an enthusiastic audience at St John’s Anglican Church, Forbes. Local school students benefitted from the visit along with Mitchell Conservatorium scholarship winners taking part in an afternoon workshop. The performance practice workshops have been a very successful program. Around 20 participants took part in these informal sessions, exploring facets of performance and stage craft not usually learned in the individual lesson. Thanks to a Regional Arts NSW grant these sessions are free for our students. On Saturday 15 June, Richard Morphew presented a vocal workshop. 15 participants & 3 observers took part in an intensive afternoon of vocal training. We were pleased that 3 of our teachers attended as professional development. The Lachlan Region Community Orchestra continues to grow & recently received assistance of a $1100 donation from the North Parkes Mine. The LRC orchestra performed for the first time in Forbes Eisteddfod, congratulations on winning their section. Check page 4 for student opportunities & wonderful concerts in Term 3.
