MLS 468108 | $200,000 | Pete Platte
Have you heard about a special place in Northern Michigan called Bluestem Meadow? If you haven’t, you will want to put it on your “must visit” list this year! Bluestem Meadow is a newly established space that is being intentionally curated to promote healing, peace, and joy in nature. The goal of Bluestem Meadow is to make solace accessible for all.
Societal challenges coupled with the pain of the sudden loss of dear friends was the impetus for this special project. Shared grief and the desire to “do something positive” is what has motivated a team of local women to imagine a peaceful, reflective, restorative, healing space in beautiful Northern Michigan that embodies the essence of these friends. And they have found the perfect place.
THE SPACE
Bluestem Meadow is located at the Offield Family Viewlands in Harbor Springs, Michigan. The land was recently an active golf course and is now being rejuvenated and protected by the Little Traverse Conservancy. Those familiar with the golf course will recognize Hole Four as the location for the project. This former fairway boasts gorgeous views down the slope to a tranquil pond. Glimpses of Little Traverse Bay and Round Lake are also visible from this location. The Bluestem Meadow team is working collaboratively with Little Traverse Conservancy to build their vision of healing in nature. These women are committed to providing longterm stewardship to establish and maintain an ever-evolving natural space that promotes peace and positive well-being for our community, honors and respects the land, and is open and accessible for all.
THE PROJECT
Currently the team is working to finalize fundraising and move forward with their first accepted proposal to LTC. The initial project is focused on three aspects of their vision. First, the installation of a walking labyrinth for meditation and reflection to be located midway down the meadow. Visitors will enjoy peeks of the water as well as a gorgeous view of the pond from the labyrinth. The labyrinth will be constructed with pathways wide enough to accommodate wheelchairs and strollers. Packed gravel will be the base for the labyrinth, and the pathways and turns will be lined with large locally-sourced rocks. Accessible pathways will also be constructed to extend existing pathways at the top and provide a low grade option to reach the labyrinth from the bottom of the meadow. Lastly, benches will be installed at the base and top of the meadow to allow comfortable seating in the area. The installation of a labyrinth, accessible pathways, and benches became the focus for the inaugural project as a way to ensure access to the site with places to rest and reflect. It is our hope that people using the labyrinth will find themselves feeling more grounded and centered as they slow down to experience peace, comfort, and joy for many years to come.

A second phase of the healing space is already in the planning phase and will include a focus on rewilding the land with the establishment of native trees, grasses, and butterfly and pollinator-friendly plantings across the rolling terraces. Additionally, installation of artistic educational signs for the labyrinth and native plants are being considered as part of this phase. The team is excited to participate in the evolution of the space and considerations for future aspects to nurture the experience of visitors.
THE TEAM
The Bluestem Meadow team is composed primarily of mothers and daughters who all know each other from their involvement in the area. The daughters are close friends who have grown up together during summers in Northern Michigan, which has always been a special place for all of them. When sudden tragic deaths of two friends recently occurred, they were determined to find ways to honor the lives of these incredible people. The Bluestem Meadow project evolved from a spark of an idea that led to the opportunity to provide stewardship at the Viewlands. The team has worked extremely hard to develop goals and a vision to ensure that all important aspects of this project are at the forefront of current decisions and future plans. The team’s vision states, “Bluestem Meadow will be a unique, peaceful sanctuary for honoring, healing, and health.“ The entire team agrees that it has been very helpful to be able to channel their collective grief into something that is so positive for the Northern Michigan community. “We all feel closer to our friends and family we have lost when we are working to launch our project and when we are out in nature visiting the site. We love working on this project because we believe it will bring love, hope, and healing to
many.” The team is very grateful for the partnership with Little Traverse Conservancy. The land restoration aspect of the project is very important to the team as well and they believe Bluestem Meadow can make a positive impact on the community. “We hope when others see this project, they are motivated to support this nurturing rewilding and restoration effort so we can all continue to enjoy the beauty of Northern Michigan for years to come.”
The team is looking for additional community partnerships to help share the message and ensure they reach a wide network of people in Northern Michigan. The women believe a project like theirs can help to end the stigma of mental illness and assist with managing grief and loss. They also believe any opportunity to be able to provide additional support and more collaborators creates a positive impact that benefits the entire community. “Every time we share this project with people or groups of people, we are always amazed at the overwhelming positive reactions we receive.” Bluestem Meadow has an incredibly positive and comforting focus combined with a nod to the natural circle of life. Grief is a universal human experience that everyone will encounter. It is the hope of the team that Bluestem Meadow will provide a place where people can find solace, peace, and hope.

The project is currently seeking donations in order to reach the goals of this landmark project. Donations at every level are appreciated. 315 & 319 W. MITCHELL STREET
Just a fabulous opportunity between downtown Petoskey and McLaren Northern Michigan Hospital in the popular B-3 Zoning corridor. With 125 feet of prime, high traffic, road frontage on US 31/131 covering two different parcels with ingress and egress from both the front and the rear, the opportunities here are diverse. Currently operated as 4 long-term residential rentals with 3 road frontage commercial units. The next consumer could continue operating in the same fashion or potentially reconstruct on one site and create ample parking adjacent, or maybe build two new structures on each Tax ID. Loads of potential and in the perfect spot for long-term success in the area of Petoskey that is receiving significant financial investment being that it’s the main thoroughfare thru the Little Traverse Bay Basin.

As Director of First Impressions, one of Jamie’s most important roles is to greet and assist every person that walks in the office. Strangers, clients, agents, friends, or family will all be met with the same smile. Setting the tone early is important to Jamie, as he believes strongly in giving people the best experience possible when working with Gaslight Group Properties. As a licensed Realtor, Jamie can assist agents with all aspects of the business, including preparing legal documents, showing homes, and conducting other real estate matters that most administrators cannot perform. Jamie is very knowledgeable about the current market temperature and fields inquiries with confidence and accuracy. In addition to his work in real estate, Jamie also plays a key role in our vacation rental business, Vacation Properties of Northern Michigan. Whether it’s walking a client through making a reservation or running out to a rental to do maintenance, Jamie is ready to help in any way necessary. Jamie loves the work atmosphere at GGP and VPNM because of the people that surround him, as they work together and there is a real sense of inclusion. Steve Jobs sums up Jamie’s perspective perfectly when he said, “Great things in business are never done by one person. They’re done by a team of people.”

When Jacquelline started with Gaslight Group Properties in 2019, her initial role quickly developed into the Marketing & Operations Manager. She is involved in everything we do here in some form or another, but prefers to stay behind the scenes. Jacquelline puts her degrees in Creative Advertising and Graphic Design and her background in marketing to work on a daily basis and is an asset to both our agents and our clients. She brainstorms how to showcase each property in the best possible light and implements our innovative marketing strategies. One of her biggest projects each year is creating our annual property guide, which reaches thousands of readers. She is also responsible for our social media management, media buying, all advertising campaigns that an agent or the company runs, and keeping things organized and running smoothly. Although she is task-oriented and runs a tight ship, she always loves a good office prank! When asked what her favorite part of the job was, she said, “We truly have the best team here. Everyone works together towards common goals and we all want to see each other succeed and grow. It’s a refreshing workspace that I’m proud to be a part of.”

Weber Lake Area Trails
Written By: Danielle Smith
My husband and I were both born and raised midstate with a lot of our time spent outdoors in the woods or on the lake – anything associated with powersports. There is something about venturing out away from the day-to-day hustle that helps us recharge. When we moved to Northern Michigan 15 years ago and had our daughter, we had to find something we could all do together to create those same memories we had as kids. We love jumping on our side by side with friends and heading out east of Petoskey on backroads and trails, pulling over here and there to let the kids embrace nature and for us adults to catch up. Some days it might be a bonfire and grilling out once we reach Weber Lake and other days it might be two tracking up to the Thirsty Sturgeon for dinner. The best part of this playground is the destination is usually unknown and the memories are priceless.

Petoskey State Park
Written By: Nancy McFadden
When asked where should one go when in our corner of Northern Michigan, that's an easy answer! No matter the season, Petoskey State Park is by far one of our best up north amenities. Experience the warm sand under your feet, take a plunge to cool off, and take in million-dollar sunsets when visiting in the summer months. Plenty of room for visitors to enjoy the beach scene, where sweeping dunes meet up with Lake Michigan. If you're lucky, you can take home the local treasure of a Petoskey stone! Fall walks on the beach to see the beautiful color change is another plus, the campground allows great access to picnics and bonfires while making memories with family and friends. Winter at Petoskey State Park takes on a whole new look and feel when exploring its banks. You can go snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, and see unique ice formations. So be sure this is on your radar when visiting the Petoskey area, you won't be disappointed.

Sturgeon Bay Beach Written By: Jack Carter
Roughly 5 miles north of Cross Village, you will find Northern Michigan’s hidden gem, Sturgeon Bay. Of all the beaches in Emmet County, Sturgeon Bay is by far my personal favorite. The most scenic beach in Northern Michigan faces west, making for some incredible sunset views. Growing up and going there as a kid with family and friends has given me plenty of unforgettable memories.
The rich history of the area plays into the theme of the famous Legs Inn, and with Petoskey Brewing opening a tap room in Cross Village, it makes catching dinner on the way home hassle-free. There is something to be said about going where your heart is happiest, and for me, that place is Sturgeon Bay. From the refreshing blue waters of Lake Michigan and clean beaches to the occasional sighting of an eagle soaring the bright blue sky, this beach truly has a majestic feel. It also sits near Wilderness State Park, where campers and visitors can enjoy 26 miles of beautiful Lake Michigan shoreline. From some areas of the park, you can see the 170-year-old Waugoshance Lighthouse. Spending all day at the beach with my friends and stopping at Legs Inn on the way home is my ideal way to spend a summer day in Northern Michigan and I don't take it for granted.

Petoskey Breakwall
Written By: Jane Fisher
The joys of a childhood summer are never forgotten. As my own kids grew into themselves, one of our favorite things to do was head to the breakwall and off they went, over the sides and into the dark blue waters of Lake Michigan. As cold as it was, there was never a complaint. Over and over they went!
At some point, I was convinced to join in, but I think it was more like shamed. The boys thought it was epic that their mom did it. Me? Not so much. But I know that the initiation was an important memory for my kids, so I totally owned it. We went right to Shorter’s Gifts to buy the t-shirt proclaiming our venture. It was something they talked about for ages.
Our breakwall is a monumental memory in many lives. All summer long, we see the troops of people walking out to the end. Some swim and some just stand in awe of the beauty. It is truly remarkable. But honestly, my favorite memory was in the winter of 1993 when the ice caves formed. It was other worldly. I had never seen anything quite like that and we wandered around the caves for hours. Another memory in the books for my family. But that is why we live here – to build one remarkable memory after another.

North Country Trail
Written By: Pete Platte
With so many outdoor activities to do in Northern Michigan, it is hard to hone in on our favorites. Spending time in the woods, typically on a bike, is my personal favorite spring, summer, and fall pastime. Often in our area, we think of Northern Michigan beaches and boat rides; while our little slice of paradise provides those in spades, spending time on any of the many biking and hiking trails in our area is a splendid way to find some mental space outdoors.
The North Country Trail runs 4,800 miles across eight states from North Dakota to Vermont. It cuts all the way across Michigan's U.P. east to west, and spans north to south across the lower peninsula. That is the trail at large, but Emmet County includes some great sections. I specifically enjoy mountain biking the trails and sections in our area; however, the hiking and trail running is second to none.
The Kipp Road access point is a local favorite for outdoor recreation enthusiasts. The beginning of the trail includes a fun 10–15 minute climb through the Northern Michigan wilderness on a rugged, single track which is a challenging start on a mountain bike. Once you have made your initial ascent, you will be traversing beautiful rolling hills in what feels like the middle of nowhere. Wildlife is abundant and other bikers and hikers are less frequent. While the trail stretches on north and includes more great sections, I typically turn around at Brutus Road and return to the Kipp Road starting point. The climb you endure at the beginning of the trail is an exhilarating final descent and an excellent way to finish a ride. At the end of an approximately 50-60 minute out-and-back ride, you will find yourself at the edge of the woods and on a dirt road with little to no traffic – the perfect location for après bike social time, in my opinion.
The North Country Trail sections are just some of the examples of the fast-growing mountain biking scene in our area. With so many professionally made trails, sometimes it’s nice to wander down a dirt road and venture off on an authentic Northern Michigan section of trail, such as the Kipp Road access point of the North County Trail. Whatever your outdoor passion is, Northern Michigan has something special to offer.
