BOYS & GIRLS CLUBS OF ST. LUCIE COUNTY
Annual Report 2019
Dear Friends, Thanks to YOU, the 2019/2020 fiscal year was a winner for children in our community. More than 15,000 local children and teens benefited from life-changing – and often life-saving - services and programs provided by Boys & Girls Clubs of St. Lucie County. YOU helped make GREAT FUTURES happen for those kids - especially for those who need us most. Do More, Give More, Be More was our guiding theme throughout this fiscal year. As you look through this Annual Report, you’ll see how this theme inspired us to reach new heights of achievement. Our 2019/2020 theme - Recognize Value, Create Value, Add Value – will guide our Board, staff, and volunteers to make Boys & Girls Clubs of St. Lucie County a super-valuable success for our kids. YOU are an important contributor to this success! You’re going to hear a lot more from us in 2019/2020 as we celebrate our 25th Anniversary. You’re at the top of our invitation list for activities celebrating this historic milestone. Boys & Girls Clubs of St. Lucie County does Whatever It Takes” to make their dreams and goals come true. A ballerina. An astronaut. An all-star athlete. If kids can dream it, Boys & Girls Clubs can help them become it. You’re invited to visit a Club close to you, meet our professional staff and awesome Club members, and see your donations in action. We guarantee you will be inspired and impressed! With gratitude,
Will Armstead, CEO
Boys & Girls Clubs of St. Lucie County
#domore Your support helped provide specialized training for Club staff and quality programs for Club members. Thousands of local kids had more opportunities to do more learning, playing, and becoming whatever they dream to be.
#givemore Club kids learned how to #givemore by volunteering in their community. Two Bayshore Elementary School club members created 'Jolly Toy Love' to collect and provide Christmas toys for children in foster care after befriending a child in foster care and understanding how difficult and sad their holidays were.
#bemore Club membership grew from 3,359 to 4,200 members and an additional 1,100 children participated in Boys & Girls Club activities and programs. Report cards showed that 90% of Club members maintained or improved their reading skills. Also, we welcomed two new Board members and more than 100 new volunteers, and staff grew from 130 to 166.

Day for Kids' & a 4-wheel bonus! Boys & Girls Clubs of St. Lucie County celebrated the end of summer with the annual ‘Day for Kids’ bash. In addition to bounce houses, tug of war, flag football and many activities for the ClubKids there was an extra surprise presentation of a brand new Toyota Sienna mini-van through the ‘Driving Great Futures’ transportation grant from Bridgestone Retail Operations. The van could not have come at a better time to replace an older vehicle that was ready for its retirement. Transportation to bring our Clubkids
to college tours, field trips, music lessons and more has always been a staple of experiences offered
off Club property. With help from the staff at Firestone in Fort Pierce the van
was unveiled in front of hundreds of Club kids that kicked off the day's activities at the Percy Peek Club.

BOYS & GIRLS CLUBS OF ST. LUCIE COUNTY
Annual Report 2019
"The greatest gift the Club has given me is the understanding that others’ knowledge can greatly improve my life!"
Kayla Williams named 2019
YOUTH OF THE YEAR What lies beyond the threshold of the hallmark blue door at the Boys & Girls Clubs of St. Lucie County? A full capacity crowd at Club Talavera at PGA Village Verano discovered the answer first-hand on February 6th as the four Youth of the Year finalists ushered them through their journeys of hardship and challenge and ultimately beyond the blue door that promises, “Great Futures Start Here!” The Youth of Year Competition, presented by Ken & Aileen Pruitt, is the premier recognition program in which one nominee is chosen to represent each of four neighborhoodbased clubs. Nominees are 14- 18 years old, possess demonstrated leadership skills, quality of character, academic achievement and maintain a healthy lifestyle. This year’s accomplished field of candidates, Christian Galentine, Yan Morrison, Kayla Williams, and
10
Yaluris Torres, acknowledged that The Boys & Girls Clubs positively impacted their lives by helping them overcome the effects of bullying, develop a personal brand, and find stability in a tumultuous world. Judges Travis Leonard, Jason Berger, Shelley Thomas, Paul Trabulsy, Melissa Corbit, Dr. Monique Mondesir, and James Taylor had the challenging task of selecting a single winner based on essays, interviews, and speeches. The 2019 Youth of the Year is Kayla Williams of the Ken Pruitt Club! Kayla shared, “When I started going to my Club I was all around a closed book and didn’t think anyone could help me. Now, I am a leader, and my character has grown for the better. The greatest gift the Club has given me is the understanding that others’ knowledge can greatly improve my life!” Thanks to the Club’s college
Kayla tours, Williams’ is confident that her dream of attending college will become a reality. And as the winner, she will represent St. Lucie County at the State Youth of the Year Competition in April! Williams received a $2,500 scholarship thanks to GL Homes, $1,500 in scholarship from Philip Busch and Southern Eagle Distributing and, thanks to Dr. Shamsher Singh, an Honor Flight experience. But, each candidate emerged a victor taking home the knowledge that they are a leader and the following prizes: a Boys & Girls Club Padfolio; an experience at Rush Trampoline Park; tumblers and additional goodies: a Natalie’s Orchid Island swag bag; and, tickets to the St. Lucie County Fair. The runner-up was awarded a $1,000 scholarship while the 3rd and 4th place candidates also both received an Apple iPad thanks to Philip Busch and Southern Eagle Distributing. Candidate Yaluris Torres summed it up best stating, “The Boys & Girls Clubs change every single person who walks through those blue doors!” For More Information call (772) 460-9918

Miss Tanesha fulfills her dreams
Ralph Waldo Emerson said, “Do not follow where the path may lead. Go instead where there is no path and leave a trail." Mother of two daughters, Tanesha Jones, has lived by this quote since her high school days. This Fort Pierce Central High School graduate began her career as a substitute teacher, working to instill the importance of education in the minds and hearts of young people. Seeing the need to keep kids in school, Tanesha applied for the position of Truancy
12
Specialist, with Boys & Girls Clubs of St. Lucie County, in 2013. This was her start to create a path of guidance, leadership, and support for those who need us most. During the long hot Florida summers, Tanesha, working as a Truancy Specialist, was assigned to work in the Clubs, teaching and mentoring young minds on the importance of learning, self-esteem, and building relationships. “This inspired, in me, the desire to help guide our youth in a positive way to become productive young adults,” exclaims Tanesha.
their best in everything they take part in. Tanesha has established their home away from home. “Ms. Tanesha is always willing to lend a helping hand. Her honesty and directness keeps us on a positive path.”
In 2017, Tanesha fulfilled her dream of becoming Director of a neighborhood Clubhouse in Fort Pierce. With high expectations, Tanesha chose her staff carefully to help her create a place where children attending felt loved and were given opportunities to develop into confident young go-getters.
