SEMESTER - V 4

This project is a Complex building dedicated to sports activities for training purposes. It has an Olympic sized swimming pool, table tennis, indoor badminton, and other various sports. The project had a requirement for large span open spaces and huge clear spans. The design of this proposed project has been inspired by the design philosophies of Ar. Frank O Gehry. The initial form of this structure was inspired by paper models. The idea was further developed to create an inverted courtyard to give a sense of open space inside a closed-off structure. The transparent roof material helps create a visual aid towards the idea of a more spacious interior space

FASHION DES. INST |

SEMESTER - VI 8

The proposal is for a Fashion Design Institute at Mumbai. The project was to create a studentfriendly campus with various amenities for better physical and mental health of the students. The zoning of this proposal is vertical and scattered, where every classroom and studio has a shared open terrace. Such pockets of open space help create a calmer environment with better interaction with nature.

Institutional designs have been the same concrete, insipid, pro-functional approaches where the adaptation of a new methodology hasn’t been implemented much to the scale where the attitude towards the design and planning of the structure could directly lead to positive impacts on academic performance.

SITE LIMITS & AREA STATEMENT PLOT SIZE: 230.0M x 130.0M PLOT AREA: 29900 SQ.M.

A vast number of studies have shown the positive effects of open spaces in various aspects of education and lifestyle. Open / Green spaces are a big part of our concrete fabric, giving it the breath-ability it needs. Incorporation of such spaces in the design and planning could ensure better fruition of academic goals and raise curiosities towards other aspects of society.

Split open spaces at the core elements of plan

Traditional integrations of open spaces are included in the form of courtyards. This has an indirect approach towards them with the intermediary between the open space and function being a passage space or rooms. Instead of such an approach, which is still pro-function but lacks the direct access needs to be modified. Open spaces at the cellular level of the planning design i.e., split up open spaces that can cater to two smaller design functions, as shown in figures above.

SEMESTER - X 16

The Title of the thesis is: Catalytic Resurgence of Inter-mutual Spaces of Mumbai. Mumbai is a multi-communal cityscape. It includes people from all walks of life. The city has grown and developed at an alarmingly fast rate which has resulted in the unplanned growth of the city. This has led to inadequacies in provisions of certain amenities and has reduced the quality of communities and life around it. The project is also a further dive into the approach in designing of public spaces. The city of Mumbai has only 1.77 m2 of open space per capita. Hence the need to provide public spaces is felt in this project. The project is located by the eastern waterfront of Mumbai.

SITE STUDY

Major Road Nearby : Eastern Freeway The existing site houses illegal dwellings/ tenements, shop lines, metal workshops, and the port’s steel import storage. The site also has a ship repair yard. The site is surrounded by water on three sides as it is a bunder. The existing land use plan shows us that, the site still has a lot of ancillary port activities. The main port activities have been shifted from MbPT to JNPT. The site is well connected by the eastern freeway to its west. The major railway line is the Harbour Line of Mumbai. The station closest to site is Reay Road railway station. WATER SUPPLY

SEWAGE

The site is surrounded by small scale industries and storage spaces owned by the Mumbai Port Trust. The major change in the existing land use plan and the proposed land use plan shows the variation of the road network for a more single land for development rather than divided plots. The main land use proposed for this site is: 1. Port Eco-Tourism zone 17

The project is a more in-depth understanding of computational design and it’s applications in real-time. The project highlights the design of a Funicular Shell structure using computational software like Rhino and Rhino Vault. The project is a Stud farm that includes a pavilion and a multi-purpose lawn. The Project is under construction.

WEsearch lab recently concluded their experimental study on ‘Waffle Structure as Canopy’ at CEPT University, Ahmedabad’s Summer Winter School (SWS) initiative. Waffle structures – technically known as stereotomy of solid geometry – have their origin in industrial design for their usefulness in quick prototyping of complex surfaces and volumes. In few cases, waffle structures become the final embodiment of an architectural project, Metropol Parasol by Jurgen Mayer being one of the examples. Every canopy was controlled at three meta-levels as following : 1. The polygonal mesh which controls the extent and macro shape of the canopy, 2. The smooth surface which controls the curvature and micro shape of the canopy, and.. 3. The waffle assembly which controls the distribution and depth (or conversely, thickness of canopy) of ribs.

Tutor: Joy Mondal, WEsearch lab
