ILLUSTRATED REFLECTION DIARY Looking back on the architectural journey I have been through in these three years, I started to aware of the historical and cultural elements behind the design of a building and notice that I have been interested in finding how architecture could bring positive impact to the community. Within this journey, it enlightens me on a different perspective of architecture, the consideration of design in different scales from the urban scale that how building could relate to the context of the community to small scale of the atmosphere, ritual life of the inhabitants, building materials and construction details. In the dissertation, I have investigated the potential application of 3D printing concrete, since I have been interested in the impact that new technology could bring to the society. The concept of this dissertation was to explore the needs of technology and potential of replacing the existing construction methods, which I have researched in diversity aspects such as design potential, construction methods, environmental and social impacts. By exploring this new technology in the construction industry, I realised that replacing the existing system might not always be the suitable solution for each project. Furthermore, the research process led me to think about the environmental impact that could bring from the construction industry and the benefit of reusing materials in terms of concrete application. Weaving in Wallsend is the studio that I chose in this year, which is a studio focuses on exploring the concept of urban common and investigating the role of architect in the community. Moreover, the studio would encourage us to consider retrofit project rather than building on abandon site, which it stands opposite to my dissertation topic. The significant considerations of the design approach are to design a building that should be related to the community and stand in the perspective of the people in Wallsend. Previously, I would make experimental models that could help me form my design scheme and the building form of my project, since I think it is interesting to experimenting different form and how the building could respond to the context rather than investigate the context by articles and the local development plan in order to form my design scheme. However, working under the pandemic not only changed my usual working pattern, but also brought me really bad experience in the beginning of this semester, which creating huge difficulties for me to work on the task. This is forcing me to make and experiment different decisions within limited time, so that I changed to sketches and conducted research on articles in order to test out ideas and further explore the site. Although it is not the usual pattern that I worked in the last two years, still I found it is quite interesting and appropriate in the design process, which it would benefit the ongoing architecture education and career. The other key design concept is to retrofit an existing building, which I would adopt most of the building structures in the building design and convert it as a main element in the building. Based on this core concept within the project, it led me to think more about the structure design of the building and tested out idea within the structural limitation. As architects, we should be aware of the practicability of the design approach, which the fundamental element would be the structure of the building, this project enables me to think more in the structural design of the building and try to keep it as realistic as we could. Overall, this year is a really challenging year for me, which it would be a valuable and unforgettable experience, these challenges provide other opportunities to explore new design methods and have further research related to the project theme that could design a more suitable building for Wallsend. Apart from that, the key principle in this studio brought me many new knowledges that I would never think about, and these knowledges would provide new viewing perspective and design concept for my next design project. Lastly, I am so thankful for my studio tutors’ supports and my peers, without their help I would never complete this project, they helped me a lot within this journey, which working with my course mates brings me noticeable improvement in every aspect.

CULTURAL BIBLIOGRAPHY Since this year only focused on one project, which gave us sufficient times in the beginning of the project to research and form our basic understanding related to the studio brief and the further design process, which I have investigated different which they help me form my current design. In the beginning of framing, I have looked at ‘Rediscovering our shared urban spaces’ in order to form my basic understanding of urban common, and finding potential scheme for the design project. Apart from ‘urban common’, we also discussed about critical spatial practice, which I have looked though the online article that written by Jane Rendell. By reading though text, I could form a rough idea in both ‘Urban Common’ and ‘Critical Spatial Practice’ in the early stage of framing. In the second stage of framing, we are asked to explore further about Wallsend, which I mainly read the reports released by the North Tyneside Council. In the second design process, I am interested to explore the basic information of the town, such as the population, education level, and the potential issues of the site, by reading through the census provided by the local government. Hence, I am also interested in the history and the proposed development plan of Wallsend, which I am able to find the ‘North Tyneside Local Plan’ that was released by the council in 2017. In these reports, I am able to narrow the potential programme that would be useful for the residents in Wallsend, but also, I gain the basic information about the site and the preference of the local government. Therefore, I decided to design a new town hall and vocational centre that is constructed on top of the existing car park next to the Forum. In the further design process, I have researched on the typical role of the town hall in the UK, which I have looked at ‘Town Hall – Building, People, and Power’ that is written by Dawn Reeves and Fran Collingham, I found it so interesting to explore the typical role of the town hall in the UK, it not only illustrates the diversity of the contemporary town hall like Doncaster council centre and the ordinary town hall as Manchester town hall. It also illustrates the differences between the town halls in Hong Kong and the UK. Hence, an online article that is written by Jamie Coath has inspired me in the design process, which I have additional awareness on the environmental design, since he pointed out that the typical town hall as Manchester town hall would have concern in terms of sustainability. Lastly, I have looked at the Wallsend town hall Business Centre’s website in order to explore the history and changes of the existing ‘town hall’ in Wallsend. Lastly, I found an article from Architects’ Journal, which is about a retrofit project relating to the transformation of an existing car park into an artist studio, it mentioned about the building process and the potential concern in renewing a car park that was constructed in the 1960s. Although I found this article in the later design process, the given information was really useful in the final stage design in terms of the structure and waterproofing issues.

3.1 FRAMING As the first stage of the design process, it is the opportunity for us to explore the studio theme. In Framing, I have started to explore the concept of urban common, and develop our understanding on common by selecing one specific building that fulfill our own definition, we are able to form a solid foundation before we visit the site. After the exploration of urban common, we began to research further to the site, and developing our own project brief that based on the site visit and the issues that we found in the site. In Framing, I am able to investigate the concept of urban common, and choosing the suitable brief for redeveloping the civic area in Wallsend.

ALTAS OF COMMONS As the first research project I did in the beginning of Framing, I decided to explore the Police Married Quarters (PMQ) in order to form a basic understanding of urban common. In this study I aimed to explore the spatial quality within this building, and how these design could benefit the community. More importantly, what elements of the building could achieve the concept of ‘urban common’. Based on this study, I could apply the elements of urban common into the further design process.

Although PMQ might not fully achieve the concept of urban common, the high flexibility of the space would be important to a common spaces, which could accommodate various events from different scales and styles. In this diagram, it wants to illustrate the diversity of the space in PMQ, it could hold a bakery, music studio, and exhibition space etc. By designing a high flexibility of space to fulfilling the needs from different groups within the whole community, the flexible space could then be considered as a common space, since the primary element of common space should be able to accommodate most people in the community.

READING SITE The second research project in Framing is Reading Site, which is we began to investigate the basic information related to the civic centre in Wallsend. In order to explore Wallsend, we have looked at five different aspects (urban & Physical, Social & Economic, Materials, Historic, Ecological). It would be a groupbase research project that could help us form the basic understanding of civic area in Wallsend.

Wallsend is a small town that locate between Tynemouth and Newcastle, which has a plentiful historical background, which can trace back to 122 AD, the Romans built a fort near the river in order to provide protection to the roman bridge across the Newcastle. The Romans names the fort as the segedunum fort, which currently it is empty. The name of the town, Wallsend, was not recorded before 1085.

Wallsend was known as a famous shipbuilding town in Newcastle, before that Wallsend could also link with mining industry since 1835, after the long disputes with the mining industry, it was ceased in 1934. Meanwhile the first shipbuilding company was found in 1880, which it has launch a few famous such as the HMS Ark Royal, The World Unicorn, and The Esso Northumbria. However, the de-Industrialisation leading to a decline of manufacturing and social disintegration in 1960s, which the economic was seriously affected by then.

As the last project in Framing, the Rituals of Civic Life was to form further understandings in terms of the building scale and hiding componenet. In this research, I am able to develop further understings in terms of the construction detail, the building size, and the potential use that might be used for Wallsend. WIthin this stage I began to research on the building in Wallsend, which is the People memorial hall and town hall for the main exploration research.

The circular design of the building creating huge spaces in the central area, although this area did not design as a courtyard space of the building, placing large scale rooflight in the centre of the building, it could provide sufficient lighting to the lower part of the building. In terms of technical aspects, the combination of photovoltaic cells and thermal insulation leading it to be the first building that could achieve net-surplus-energy standard. Comparing to the typical town hall that have historical facade, which might not in line with the modern standard, the contemporary town hall could achieve higher awareness in terms of sustainability.

The Doncaster council centre has a flexible design in terms of the building plan layout, which the open plan design could benefit the future rearragement of the purpose of space, this design could provide greater freedom for the council. Hence, the open plan design would be capable to hold different event in the town hall, which could accommodate different scale and purpose events in the town hall, it would be a crucial element for a contemporary town hall to hold diverse activities for the community.

The history of the memorial people’s hall are related to the WWI, which it meant to celebrate the effort and sacrifice from the residents in Wallsend. On the top floors of the building was a huge gathering space that could hold different activities, it also provide a event venue for the community.

External Car Park

Based on the research from framing, the primary design brief of this project is to design a flexible common spaces that belong to the community, who can manage the space. Futhermore, the spaces within the building should enourage interaction between different groups in the community and form greater bondings, so that the building should be able to invite different stakeholders in the Wallsend.

The western side of the forum have a large area of car park space, and greenery area. The location could provide higher design freedom compare to the other site in the civic area

Behind the buildings that face to the main street in Wallsend. However, there are considerable amount of building around the site.

In order to achieve sustainable design, the project would retrofit the existing car park. Since the oversupply parking area around the Forum, the selection of covered car park would provide largest benefits to the residests in Wallsend. In Wallsend, the majority of household do not have a vehicle, and the second largest residents only have 1 vehicle, which the covered parking space may not fully utilised.

Programme 1: Town Hall

COMMUNITY

In this design project I would like to design a new town hall for the community in Wallsend, since I think it have limited gathering space that allows holding different kind of activities. The town hall aims to achieve a flexible design that could hold wide range of activites from formal to casual, but also could gather the community into one building, which could enourage various of interestion between the community in order to recover the disintegration in Wallsend.

Programme 2 : Vocational Centre

STUFF

Looked thought the census that released by the local government, which there are a quarter of residents in Wallsend do not have education qualification. Therefore, I decided to design a vocational centre that focus on developing creative industries such as art, craftmanship, or even music, which it target the young adults that age from 20- 28. The vocational centre was aimmed to restore the manufacturing industry in Wallsend.

Qualification Survey

Programme 3 : Common Area Within this building, I would design additional spaces for the community in order to provide higher flexibility. These spaces could be managed and run by the community, which the common space could be changed in the long-terms based on the need of the community. Besides that the common area also aim to provide comfortable space that could bring a second home for the people living around.

As the primary programme of the building is a town hall, which I started doing rough and design sketches in order to experiment with the materials and design of the spaces, but also considering the ritual life within the building and experiment different elements thta would suitable for this project.

Outdoor spaces are one of the elements that I want to design in this building, so that I started to using rough sketches to form the brief design that could accommodate the key elements that I want to have in this building.

DESIGN EXPLORATION - SKETCHES

1 This idea was to create a slope component that connect two blocks that have different heigh. In order to reduce the mass of the building that could minimise the affect to the low building around in terms of lighting, wind, and building mass.

This idea was to forming a central courtyard in the building by creating two L-shape blocks, which could provide more outdoor space for the building and the community

3 This idea was to creating a sky garden in the building by placing the new structure on top of the existing car park and place 1-2 metre behind the car park in order to create a sky garden.

4 This idea was to emphasis on using the existing structure, and forming different purpose of spaces by the height difference of each blocks.

DESIGN EXPLORATION - EXPERIMENT SKETCHES After the design exploration from sketches, I decided to combine the theme from design 1 and 3, which I combined the new building into the car park structure. Originally, I designed a 6-storey high building as the new town hall for Wallsend. However, I realised that it would bring negative effects for the site in terms of lighting and wind. After that I started to emphasis on the relation between the town hall and the site, which I wanted the height to kept align with the customer first centre that next to the car park.

DESIGN EXPLORATION - SECTION Before I have realise the scale of the building is too big, I have experiment the lighting and the layout of the building by drawing rough section. The main idea of the building was to design large atrium that reach to the ground floor in order to provide more lighting into the building. After I found out the scale issues of the building, I scale down the building by removing the bottom rectanglar block of from the massing and keep the building within 13m high which could stay align with the customer first centre, but also minimise the impact to the building near by. Section 3

The concept of reducing the mass of the building and inviting the existing car park structure as the foundation was formed in the middle of the design process. However, the depth and low ceiling design of the structure brings considerable negativity in terms of the compressive and dim atmosphere. Therefore, I thought maybe lifting up the concrete slabe higher would solve the issues mentioned above, so that the further experiment process was to decide which part of the floor slabe should be rose.
