Following a global open-call for digital self-portraits (May-August 2020) in response to the question: with so many of us in lockdown, self isolating and working from home, with human inter-connections changing - how do we look inwards at ourselves? And how do we look towards the “new normal” following the outbreak of COVID-19? In QUAD’s Extra Gallery Spaces we are delighted to present a digital showcase of fifty-three self portraits and printed works that offer a form of reflection on the time that has passed and how that has been represented by artists around the world.
Corinne Daisy From series: A Bedtime Story 'Daisyland' , 2020 My fear of leaving home and mental health conditions have been heightened during the Coronavirus pandemic. These self-portraits were created within my bed. I love daisies, but felt afraid and unable to visit them. Whilst painting the nature I longed to be in upon my skin, I thought to myself how lovely it would be to live in a new land filled with daisies, so in the safety of bed I created ‘Daisyland’; my safe space.
Amelia Rouse self-isolated, 2020 This illustration/comic was a reflection on how I was feeling somewhere in the middle of the pandemic when I was feeling drowned in all the news and seemingly endless binges on Netflix, isolated, and just tired of everything. Then I got confused with all the different messaging in the media. Everything got a bit garbled in my mind while I was in my bubble with my house plants. The confusion about the pandemic devolved into general confusion, a bit of an existential crisis. Finally, I had a few moments when I just felt very sexy in my old sweat pants, (which we all want to believe but know is not entirely true), I had forgotten what clothes were for...
