MISINFORMATION Media portays and narrows the homeless to the general idea that these people have made a series of bad life choices. In reality, it is often due to uncrollable circumstances in which people are brought into.

Using this as a narrative to stage my project on, I derived links and ideas from my exploration of the power of surveillance and the power of the media to influence our perceptive mind.

After consideration and feedback from the intial proposal, homelessness being one of the prevailing issues in Coventry, my focus shifted more directly to social aspects. It became clearer through an interview with a homeless man [Dave] near our site that the stigmas surrounding homelessness were muddled. The general public opinion of the reality of homeless living throughout the UK is heavily misinformed [See conversation on the next page.]

Unashamedly a fan of Bernard Tschumi and his work, especially the Manhattan Transcripts and the Sergei Eisenstein noational drawings. I decided to use this idea when thinking about the journey of a homeless man, the events that might occur or the path which they would choose. This formed my basis for the spatialised interface drawing.

Welcome to the shed. Where blokes and bad jokes are made.

In order to get a better understanding of the concept of my project., I started experimenting with possible tectonic and layering qualities. Whilst peddling through inspiration of designers and architects [notably Diller+Scofidio who critically explore the user experience] I envisionned a simple timber frame installation which would act as void. The idea behind layering is suggestive of my intial research on Tschumi and a further exploration into the notion of sequencing.

Following our Theory into Practice submission, this inital concept model moving into the Realisation phase of our projects, followed my interest in the work of Cedric Price, notably the Fun Palace and Bernard Tschumi. Using my understanding of notational drawing I transferred these ideas in 3D. The model is based off the 5m underpass height difference on my site. I used some film roll to evoke a sequential entrance. I was also interested in how engines operate, the ‘generative’ quality which engines revolve around, seemed in line with activating movement as the starting point for my project.

GHOST TOWN WHY ?

What makes Coventry such a ‘ghost town’ ? Is it the lost sense of identity, or perhaps the lost sense of community ? As highlighted in my conversation with Dave, Coventry’s detached atmosphere even inspired ska band The Specials to write a song about it. This collage depicts the ‘lost’ Coventry, the disentegrating sense of community and the council system turning a blind eye, failing to look after the vulnerable.

‘IT’S HARD BEING HOMELESS WITHOUT YOUR OWN TERRITORY’

What fascinated me as a designer and thinker was the point of view of the homeless. Whilst we elaborated a more concrete understanding of the vulnerable in Coventry, I felt heavily inspired by how homeless folk experience time, do they experience a slower or faster version ? Does this affect their behaviour in the long term ? Whilst having these questions, I continued basing my project with these temporalities in mind. Realising that an effective time-based strategy was to be explored

PROPOSAL The re-intergration centre (rather than a re-hab centre) [Experimental new government scheme under the vision of Cyrenians] The home-less benefit from spaces that facililate a more direct intergration into society. Most fear the institunationalized scheme that is provides by council services. Often rejecting the home-less and worsening their sense of dignity. Current UK policy (under the implementation of the Housing First scheme) provides immediate shelter and advice for the latter stages of re-intergrating the home-less into housing. However under economic pressure and the housing crisis, this remains an under developped and temporary solution in Coventry. Most homeless do not know who, how or where to approach this scheme. The re-intergration centre aims to remove the stigma associated with homeless and act as a first point of contact, providing essential facilities and services alongside skill based spaces than can provide jobs for the homeless.

PERRY KULPER One area of architecture I have always enjoyed has been the process or thought behind generating it. It’s fascinating to me where projects often come from and P.Kulper’s work often draws from these generative models and concepts.

This often leads to very dense and informative drawings, in which nodes, spaces or movements can be extracted from. The developments of my project used this technique as a tool to evolve my buildings concept.

This was my first try at generating a concept for a walkway. I wanted to make sure I understood the principle before moving on to a more architectural language.

At this point of my project I made the decision use all the different ideas that I had learnt throughout the year and find my own style . The next few pages will show the intial plan develoments for the first set of plans. These drawings were made at a scale of 1:100 using the site dimensions.

One of the main strategies was re-using the buildings current concrete structure. Through the tech module I explored how I would be able to build self heated pods separate from one another. I also focused on the CLT construction, where it was preferable to wrap the floors around each beam. This heavily informed my final design interations and led me to final plans.

INTERGRATING TECH

As part of the programme to re-initiate skill based activities and trade, it became obvious that the centre could have an evolving vegetation patch. Then the decision to use green roofs suggested that the polycarbonate facade could age with the overgrowth in time to come. This would both appeal as a re-intergration centre and also enhance bio-diveristy in Coventry.
