Feral Practice T h e A n t- i c Museum The Ant-ic Museum utilises materials, forms and themes influenced by the priorities of ants. Many of the materials for the exhibition have been foraged from the woods, fields and car parks. Their colours, smells and textures bring the perceptual world of the wood ants and you, a human visitor, a little closer. Ants often use smell to communicate. Many of the materials here are aromatic. You might get a whiff of formic acid or urine, blue cheese or vinegar - the mingled smells of ant and human bodies. The collages are linked by fragrant ‘frames’, their surfaces decorated with plant materials, including those that humans value for their scent, such as Lavender and Spruce needles, and those with mysterious and powerful medicinal properties, such as Mugwort. As far as possible, the manmade materials used to make this exhibition have been reused, recycled or scavenged from waste. Many small things have been accumulated and arranged by many people over many weeks, mirroring the ways that wood ants build their mounds.
