Feral Practice T h e A n t- i c Museum Feral Practice has been researching and working with ants since 2014. In May 2021, a residency at Dalby Forest enabled them to work with the wood ant population of Broxa Forest. Three new sculptures bring the domed shape of the wood ant nest into dialogue with ancient and modern human architectural forms - the ziggurat, the stupa, the geodesic dome. Video works embedded in these sculptures offer intimate views of the ants’ world. A wall installation of fragrant, sculptural collages, its sprawling structure evoking the tunnels and chambers of the ant nest, explores the sometimes dark teaching that humans have gleaned from the ants, on topics including farming, slavery, family, war, hierarchy and architecture. The artist’s book, accompanying the exhibition, is shaped around a dialogue between Feral Practice and the Broxa Forest Sisterhood of the North York Moors, and dives deeper into this rich and complex history.
