UN:DOMESTICATED Queer & FEMINIST Quarterly

We are undomesticated The idea to actually start editing a magazine was born in summer 2008 when the sun was shining high above metropolitan Berlin and the desire to be a part of Berlin‘s creative business environment actively assumed the direction of thoughts.

It quickly became clear that U:D should contain the fields of Techno and House music as well as photography, street art, and the like. Sure, I am aware that the market is crowded with great magazines, but… - so many creative and skilled women so full of awesome ideas in these three fields continue to remain underrepresented in the landscape of cultural media…! It is about time to introduce to the public a greater number of amazing female artists and support the female art and electronic music scene by networking.

Now, reviewing the time that has passed by since that summer of awakening, U:D aka un:domesticated, which Marine Drouan and I are now able to proudly present, has often been for us a full time job on top of a full time job.

Having started with full motivation and loads of energy there soon came the point where all the work of interviewing, writing, translating, promoting and convincing people, pushed me to my limits. Not to forget, I am neither a graphic designer nor do I do layout. In the beginning, that has been my biggest challenge. But then I suddenly turned into a very lucky editor raising like a phoenix from the ashes, when Marine came on board to rescue U:D before it ended up a simple internet blog or even drown in some virtual trash bin.

From then on U:D grew and - did it happen by incident or not - further contributors contacted us. Since the very beginning we planned U:D to be a bilingual magazine and therefore our special thanks go out to Miruna Boruzescu,

Special thanks also to Jennifer Bailey-Lemanceau who has recommended us great artists and conducted interviews, and always believed in U:D, even in times when others still remained skeptical that we would make it. But we did it.

Marine, in my opinion and also according to what I have heard from others, has done a fantastic layout job and has given U:D a beautiful face.

Both of us want to thank all the great photographers, DJs, street artists, graphic designers and illustrators who trusted us and accepted the challenge of contributing their beautiful work to a little still unknown magazine which is unfortunately available just online for now. But our next project, among others, will be a printed issue. But as for the first issue of U:D… Here we are, and we are un:domesticated!

Wann hast Du mit dem DJ-ing angefangen?

Privat habe ich quasi schon seit der Grundschule „DJ“ gespielt und auf Parties meist die Plattenspieler und die Cassettenrekorder bedient. Musik und ganz besonders Tanzmusik war für mich schon immer eine große Leidenschaft und sehr lebensbestimmend.

Angefangen „professionell“ aufzulegen – also öffentlich und mixend in Bars und Clubs – habe ich im September 1993 in Berlin, in einer Bar in der Kreuzberger Oranienstraße, dem „Drama“. Das „Drama“ war damals für viele der Treffpunkt für’s Warm-Up vor dem Ausgehen und eine der wenigen Bars, die sich freitags und samstags DJs leisteten.

Dort bin ich dann auch den Bookern vom Tresor oder der Veranstaltung „Plush“ im Café Moskau zu Ohren gekommen und sie haben mich recht schnell als DJ für ihre Veranstaltungen gebucht.

Was hat aus Deiner Sicht die Berliner Clubszene Anfang der 1990er ausgemacht?

Nach dem Mauerfall gab es enorm viele mehr oder weniger legale Locations und improvisierte Clubs in Berlin und alles was damit zusammenhing, war für mich frisch aus Süddeutschland Zugezogene wahnsinnig spannend; die Musik, das Publikum, das Ambiente, die neuen Sounds, die Aufbruchstimmung. „The Place To Be“ waren auf einmal kurzerhand besetzte und zum Club umfunktionierte Räumlichkeiten im ehemaligen Ostteil der Stadt, oft irgendwo im Hinterhof – für mich eine sehr willkommene und anziehende Alternative zu adretten Clubs oder eher Discotheken, wie ich sie noch aus Süddeutschland kannte.

Zu diesen Locations passte natürlich perfekt die Musik, „rough & dirty“ - wie sie seinerzeit in Berlin gespielt wurde.

Mich faszinierte es schon damals und heute noch viel mehr, wenn Musik und Atmosphäre etwas dreckig sind und Kanten haben, gleichzeitig dein Herz erwärmen und sich auf das Nötigste beschränken – das aber liebevoll und konsequent.

Das Gleiche gilt auch für Clubs: auf Schnick Schnack kann

ich gut verzichten und wenn sie zu schick und hochglänzend sind, funktioniert das für mich als Partylocation nicht - ein bisschen Schmutz und / oder Trash muss schon sein!

Was bedeutet der Plattenladen Hardwax für Dich? zu Beginn der 1990er gab es ja noch keine Internetnetzwerke, wie wir sie heute für selbstverständlich halten.

Ein Plattenladen ist für mich neben dem Club DER zentrale Ort, um Menschen zu treffen, mit denen ich die Leidenschaft Musik teile und mir Inspirationen hole. Und das ist sehr wichtig für mein Leben als DJ. Musik hat ja etwas wahnsinnig Verbindendes und das lässt sich in einem Plattenladen wie dem Hardwax prima ausleben.

In den wesentlich internetärmeren 90ern war so etwas sicherlich noch notwendiger als in der Gegenwart, in der viel Kommunikation und Austausch ja virtuell passiert. Allerdings ist mir persönlich der reale Kontakt viel wichtiger als der im Netz und ich möchte das Plattenkaufen im Laden mit „echten Menschen d’rum herum und gemeinsamen Plattenhören auf gar keinen Fall gegen Netshopping eintauschen. Musik miteinander zu teilen ist dafür das Hauptmotiv.

Das Hardwax sehe ich als eine DER Institutionen für elektronische Musik mit einem enormen Angebot an spannendem Vinyl jenseits des Mainstreams oder dessen, was gerade „der Hype“ ist. Das Hardwax war und ist für mich als DJ enorm prägend.

Hier hat einfach vieles Raum, was Subkultur ist, liebevoll produziert wurde und vielleicht auch mal sperrig und nicht sofort gefällig ist, dafür aber bei genauerem Hinhören und vielleicht auch erst beim zweiten oder dritten Mal so richtig Dein Herz gewinnt. Ich habe hier schon jede Menge musikalische Perlen für die Ewigkeit gefunden und vieles gelernt, was elektronische Musik betrifft.

Auflegen ohne Hardwax wäre für mich schwer vorstellbar und ich habe sehr viel Respekt vor der Arbeit, die alle dort leisten.

Du warst sehr lange Resident im Tresor. Wie war das dort?

Wild und gefährlich ;o) Nein, im Ernst: Der Tresor hatte einen Musikentwurf, der mich damals sehr fasziniert und gleichzeitig komplett überfordert hat: wesentlich roher, funkiger, subtiler, eckiger und dreckiger (da ist es wieder….), als das, was ich bis dahin kannte. Das galt auch für den Globus, den zweiten Floor im Tresor, der etwas später ausgebaut wurde und House mehr Platz bot.

Ich hingegen habe ursprünglich angefangen, hauptsächlich Vocal House aufzulegen, viel klassischen New York Vocal House, der Anfang der 1990er Jahre recht verbreitet war gemischt mit viel cheesigem Pop-House und – oh je -progressivem, kaum subtilem Handbag-House.

Als DJ im Tresor bzw. Globus entdeckte ich dann nach und nach die Ecken und Kanten in der Musik auch für mich als DJ, Techno kam immer mehr für meine Sets in Frage und so verband ich House und Techno immer häufiger miteinander, wenn auch noch recht vorsichtig, da ich oft nicht wusste, wie ich fließend Brücken vom einen zum anderen schlagen konnte und Brüche noch sehr scheute.

Der Tresor hat für mich also gewissermaßen den Grundstein für das gelegt, was heute typisch für meine DJ-Sets ist: eine Mischung aus House in vielen Variationen und Techno, beides mit viel Deepness, zusammen mit Disco, meist aus den 80ern, klassischem Electro und manchmal auch ein bisschen Pop. Allerdings je nach Club und Tageszeit mit unterschiedlichen Prioritäten, da für mein Empfinden nicht in jeden Raum und zu jeder Stimmung auch jede Musik passt.

Im OSTGUT sowie im Berghain / Panorama Bar konnte ich dann dank der Vielseitigkeit meiner Chefs und dank eines auch musikalisch sehr offenen Publikums viel mit unterschiedlichsten Stimmungen und Spannungen spielen, vieles ausprobieren und meinen Stil weiter ausbauen.

Wie bist Du als Resident DJ zum OSTGUT und später zum Berghain / Panorama Bar gekommen?

Ich wurde damals – im Sommer 2001 – von einem OstgutMitarbeiter angerufen und für eine CSD-Veranstaltung angefragt, bei der ich 80er Disco auflegen sollte, was gar nicht typisch für mich war, was ich aber ganz interessant fand. Außerdem war ich natürlich höchst erfreut, komplett aus dem Häuschen, dass der Club, in dem ich vorher öfter

als Gast unterwegs war und die Nächte und Tage immer sehr toll fand, mich hinter den Plattentellern haben wollte. Es scheint gefallen zu haben, denn sie haben mich danach noch öfter gebucht, meistens für die schwul-lesbische Veranstaltung, die sich Dance With The Alien nannte. Anfang 2003 musste das OSTGUT schließen und Ende 2004 öffneten erst die Panorama Bar, dann das Berghain ihre Pforten. Vorher brodelte natürlich die Gerüchteküche, unter anderem gab es unterschiedlichste Mutmaßungen, wer wohl auflegen würde und warum und und und – die Spannung war groß. Ich wurde von der Sonne geküsst - sie haben mich wieder angerufen…

Das ist ja schon eine lange zeit, die Du in der OstgutFamilie bist, was ist das Besondere am Berghain und wie hat sich das für Dich ausgewirkt?

Das Besondere am Berghain allgemein ist ausgeprägte Leidenschaft - Leidenschaft für Musik, Kultur und Subkultur.

Darüber hinaus macht die Mischung verschiedener Menschen den Club für mich auch sehr besonders. Die beiden Betreiber erlebe ich als sehr engagiert und präsent, sie bringen uns allen viel Vertrauen in unsere Arbeit und Wertschätzung entgegen, fördern uns sehr und fordern auch viel.

Zum Beispiel gab es im alten Ostgut Sonntags eine Veranstaltung, die sich Last Chance To Disco nannte. Da ging es darum, dass alle einmal ihre Interpretation von Disco auflegen. Die Fortsetzung dieses Abends gibt es nach wie vor an Silvester, am 30. April und zum CSD im Lab.Oratory, dem Sexclub des Berghains, das an diesen Tagen für Männer und Frauen geöffnet hat. Hier geht es dann um Disco und Pop in allen Variationen – ein Riesenspaß - und bei der Vorbereitung auf diese Nächte lernt man einfach noch einmal ganz schön viel dazu und stößt immer wieder auf jede Menge tolle Musik.

Außerdem macht für mich die Arbeit im Berghain noch besonders die Tatsache, dass Dinge sich gern mal entwickeln und sich Zeit lassen dürfen. Es muss nichts über’s Knie gebrochen werden – das steht in einem so angenehmen Gegensatz zur Arbeit in Agenturen, der ich jahrelang neben dem Auflegen nachgegangen bin.

Was macht unsere Arbeit als Resident-DJs aus oder besonders?

Wir alle haben einen sehr umfangreichen musikalischen Background, schon viele Jahre DJ-Erfahrung und kennen die Wurzeln von House und Techno recht gut. Und trotzdem oder gerade deswegen sind wir musikalisch auch immer auf der Suche und alle sehr große Nerds auf diesem Gebiet.

Unter uns DJs gibt es ein ganz gesundes ungezwungenes und respektvolles Gemeinschaftsgefühl, das durch die Arbeit unserer Booking-Agentur noch einmal verstärkt wird. Wir werden des Öfteren von unseren Bookerinnen in unterschiedlichen Konstellationen in andere Clubs der Welt verschickt. Da lernt man sich dann noch einmal anders und besser kennen und das verbindet natürlich zusätzlich.

Das Besondere an der Musik?

Der Facettenreichtum in den Stilrichtungen, alles auch gern wild durcheinander und die Kombination von klassischen elektronischen Sounds mit heißer neuer Musik.

Für mich wirken sich der Austausch mit meinen KollegInnen, vor allem mit Prosumer und Steffi, sowie die Möglichkeit, in der Panorama Bar, im Berghain, im LabOratory und bei unserer Deep-House Veranstaltung in der Berghain-Kantine zu spielen, insofern aus, als meine musikalischen Grenzen immer offener, ich immer noch neugieriger und meine Sets (hoffentlich) immer abwechslungsreicher werden.

Für Dich haben klassische House-, Techno und DiscoTracks einen hohen Stellenwert. Diesem Respekt vor dem Klassischen entspricht auch die Technik, die Du beim Mixen verwendest: Du legst ausschließlich mit Vinyl auf, richtig?

Ja – stimmt. Für mich ist Musik und das Auflegen etwas sehr Sinnliches - ich mag es, durch Plattenkisten zu wühlen, Platten anzufassen, auf schwere Plattenspieler zu legen, Regler zu verschieben etc. – die Haptik ist für mich ein wichtiger Teil des Spiels. Auf Computern nach dem nächsten Titel zu suchen hat für mein Empfinden die Sexyness von E-Mails checken… Also lass’ ich’s lieber.

Außerdem empfinde ich das Auflegen mit Vinyl noch als Handwerk und das fühlt sich ganz richtig und gut an. Hinzu kommt, dass beim Auflegen mit Vinyl einfach mehr passieren kann und das macht’s spannend: eine verstaubte Nadel rutscht durch, die Platte knackt und knistert, das Angleichen der Beats ist gerade bei älteren analog produzierten Tracks auf dem klassischen Weg viel schwieriger und geht vielleicht

auch mal ein bisschen daneben – das ist doch toll und äußerst charmant – es lebt halt. Nichts ist in der Kunst langweiliger als Perfektion durch Technik, die alles einfach macht. Fehler haben Charakter. Und Vinyl klingt einfach besser und ist am haltbarsten!!! SO ;o) Was sagst Du dazu, dass die Milkshake nun in die Kantine gezogen ist?

S-U-P-E-R!!!!!! Mich freut es, so viele Frauen zu Techno und House tanzen zu sehen und das in diesem kleinen sehr feinen Club. Ich hoffe, die eine oder andere findet auch den Weg ins Berghain bzw. in die Panorama Bar, denn ich es ist schade, dass so wenige Lesben diesen Laden für sich entdecken, dabei kann man dort sooooo viel Spaß haben.

Außerdem beschweren sich gerne viele darüber, dass es so wenige weibliche DJs gibt – dort sind wir mit Steffi, Cassy, Dinky, Margaret Dygas und mir schon verhältnismäßig viele weibliche Residents. Und wir freuen uns natürlich auch über Support von queeren Mädels ;o) Du veranstaltest mit Steffi und Prosumer auch eine eigene Partyreihe in der Kantine.

Ja, die 5 Euro Admission, mit der wir diversen Facetten von Deep House einen Raum geben wollen. In der Panorama Bar lässt man es schon mal krachen, 5 Euro Admission ist etwas unaufgeregter, hier geht es eher um Hüftmusik als um „Hands up in the Air“.

Es gibt sehr viele Deep House-Produktionen, die sehr berühren, die brauchen einfach mehr Raum. Deep House spielen wir schon auch in unseren Sets in der Panorama Bar; aber nicht ausschließlich, nicht in diesem Umfang, auch wenn für die Sets von uns Dreien im Allgemeinen Deepness schon sehr charakteristisch ist.

Die Party findet grundsätzlich jeden zweiten Freitag im Monat statt – for those who feel it.

Auch wenn man sie sicher nicht abschließend beantworten kann, aber diese Frage noch als letzte: Welche Platten sind Deiner Meinung nach ein absolutes Muss in einer Plattensammlung? Nenn doch bitte auszugsweise und stellvertretend 10 Titel.

Außerdem stelle ich die nächste Panorama Bar CD (die erste kam von Cassy) zusammen und mixe sie auch. Sie wird voraussichtlich am 24.08.2009 veröffentlicht, Release Party wäre dann am 22.08.2009 – natürlich in der Panorama Bar.

When did you started DJing?

In private I used to “play” the DJ since I was in elementary school. I’ve always been the one to turn the tables or to operate the tape recorder on almost every party. Music, especially dance music has always been my big passion and defining for my life.

I started to put on records professionally and to play sets in public bars and clubs in September 1993 at a bar in Berlin, Kreuzberg in Oranienstraße. The place called Drama was a meeting point for many people to get started before going to the club. It was one of the few bars that had DJs on Fridays and Saturdays.

While playing there I caught the ear of the bookers for Tresor and the party Plush at Café Moskau and they started hiring me for their events.

How would you describe the Club scene of Berlin in the early 90s?

After the Wall came down , there were a lot of illegal locations in Berlin and clubs were literally built up over night. I just came here from south Germany and found all that very exciting; the music, the audience, the ambience, the new sounds and the pioneer spirit. Seized buildings in the east part of the city sometimes in any backyards were converted to clubs – that was the “place to be” and a welcome and attractive change to neat Clubs or rather Discotheques like I knew them from south Germany.

Those locations suited perfectly the „rough & dirty“ music – that was played that time.

Back then, and today even more, I was fascinated by dirty and edgy music and ambience, that is at the same time heart-warming and reduced to the bare minimum - but still has love and consistency.

The same goes for clubs: I can go easily without all that bells and whistles and when it is too neat and high glossy, then it is just not working for me as a party location. For me it always has to be a bit dirty and/or trashy!

What does the record store Hardwax mean to you? With regard to the fact that in the early 90s there were no internet networks yet like we take them for granted today.

For me a record store is THE centre place beside the club, to get inspired and to meet the people I share the passion for

music with. And that is important for my life as a DJ, since music such a concerted thing. The Hardwax is a great place to live that out.

In the rather “internet-low” 90s there was certainly more necessity for all that than today, when a lot of communication and exchange is happening virtually. For me personally, being face to face is much more important than the communication via net. I would not swap buying records at a shop, with real people around and collective listening to records, for net shopping. To share music with others is my main goal.

I consider the Hardwax as one of THE institutions for electronic music, with a vast range of exciting vinyl disregarding the Mainstream or whatever is „the Hype“ at the moment. Hardwax was and still is very important for me as a DJ. Here you find plenty of great stuff, that‘s sub cultural, produced with love, and sometimes also inconvenient at first sight, and then totally wins your heart at least when you listen to it closely for the second or third time. I have found plenty of musical treasures here so far. I learned a lot regarding electronic music and it would be hard for me to imaging being a DJ at all without Hardwax. I very much respect the people who work there and what they do.

You were holding the residency at Tresor for a long time.

What was it like there?

Dangerous ‘n’ wild ;o) No, seriously: The Tresor had a music conception back then, that fascinated and at the same time overwhelmed me completely: way more raw, funky, understated, edgy and dirty (there it is again) than everything I had known before. That also goes for Globus, the second room of TRESOR, that was opened up a bit later and provided more space for house music.

I originally started to play mainly classic New York Vocal House, which was very popular in the early 1990s, mixed it with cheesy pop-house and - oh dear - progressive, barely subtle handbag-house.

During my work as a DJ in Tresor or Globus I discovered bit by bit the rough edges of the music. Techno became more and more a part of my sets and I started to connect house and techno more often, even if that were some quite cautious first attempts and I tried to avoid breaks, since I yet didn’t know how to get smooth bridges.

The Tresor has very much evolved my style of playing sets:

A mix of house and techno in different variations, typically with a lot of deepness, together with disco music mostly of the 80s, classical electro and sometimes pop. The sets vary as well depending on the venue and the daytime, since in my opinion not every mood and club corresponds with every music.

Thanks to my chefs universalism and to my open minded audience at the Ostgut back then and today Berghain / Panorama Bar, I was able to play around and experiment with the most different spirits and tensions, and to advance my style.

How have you become a resident at Ostgut, today‘s Berghain / Panorama Bar? In summer 2001 I got a call from an Ostgut employee who wanted to book me for a CSD event to play some 80s Disco music, what wasn’t exactly my style at all, but I however found it interesting. Above that I was very pleased or rather all exited that the club, I used to go to a lot and loved the days and nights there, wanted me behind the tables.

They seemed to like my gig there because from then on they started to book me more often. Mostly for a gay event called Dance With The Alien. At the beginning of 2003 the Ostgut had to close and in the end of 2004 first the Panorama Bar and then the Berghain opened the gates. There were of course a lot of rumours and speculations circulating. Among others about who would be the DJs there and why and so on - the tension was mounting. I got kissed by the sun – they called me again.

It’s quite a long time now that you belong to the Ostgutfamily. What is defining the Berghain and how does it influence you?

What is special on the Berghain in general is the amount of passion – passion for the music, the culture and subculture.

Beyond that it’s the mixture of the different people that makes the club so unique. The both who run the place are very involved and present, they show us a lot of trust and appreciate our work. They promote us and demand a lot of us.

There was for example an event called Last Chance To Disco at the old Ostgut where all of us could play their personal rendition of Disco. That event is still taking place on new

year’s eve, on the 30th of April and on the CSD in the Lab. Oratory, the Sexclub of the Berghain, and is opened then for men and women. This one is about Disco and Pop in all possible variations – a great fun – while preparing for those nights you learn a lot and find great music.

What’s also special about working at Berghain is the fact that you can give things time and let them develop. Nothing has to get forced – that’s a comfortable contradiction to working at an agency, what I used to do besides working as a DJ for years.

What is significant for working as a resident-DJ, or what makes it special?

All of us do have a considerable musical background. Each one is working as a DJ for 10 years or even longer. We know the roots of house and techno. And nonetheless, or maybe that’s exactly why, we are all big nerds and always in search of great music.

Between us DJs there is a healthy, non-forced and respectful collective feeling that is even amplified by our common booking agency. Our bookers often send us to guest spot all over the world in different constellations.

So you come to know each other better and differently, that’s extra connecting.

What’s special about the music?

The variation of styles, everything mixed together combining classical electronic sounds with hot new music.

The interchange with my colleagues, especially Prosumer and Steffi, as well as the possibility to play at PanoramaBar, Berghain, LabOratory and at our deep-house night at the Berghain-Kantine affects me concerning my musical limits get more open, I get more curious and (hopefully) my sets get more varied.

The classical house-, techno and disco-tracks important for you. That reverence for the classics is also shown in the format you are working with. You‘re exclusively putting on vinyl, right?

Yeah, that’s right. For me music and playing music is something very sensual – to touch and select the records,

put them on heavy tables, handle the gear etc - the haptic is an important part of it for me. For me playing tracks from the computer is as sexy as checking your e-mails …so I don’t do it.

Furthermore for me putting on vinyl is real craft. And that feels good and right. Also, there is more that can happen or go wrong when you put on vinyl, and that makes it exciting: a dusty needle can slip, the record cracks and crackles.

Adjusting the beats the classic way is much more difficult particularly on analog produced tracks and sometimes it just goes wrong – that is great and very charming – it’s just living. Nothing in art is more boring than the perfection by techniques which makes everything easy. Failings are character. And Vinyl also sounds better and is the most resistible thing!!! Right ;o)

What do you thing about Milkshake moving into the Kantine?

S-U-P-E-R!!!!!! I am happy to see so many women dancing to techno and house especially in this small but very nice club. I hope one or another will find her way into Berghain, into Panorama Bar, for I think it‘s sad, that there are so few lesbians coming although you can have soooo much fun there.

Beside so many are complaining about the too few female DJs – Steffi, Cassy, Dinky, Margaret Dygas and myself that makes quite a lot female residents. And of course we are glad about queer girls’ support ;o) You’re also organizing a party at Kantine, together with Steffii and Prosumer.

Yeah, with the 5 Euro Admission we want to create more space for deep house. At Panorama Bar you just have a blast, 5 Euro Admission is a bit more unexcitedly, this is more about music for the hips than for throwing up your arms.

There are a lot affecting deep house productions, which just need more space. We also play deep house during our sets at the Panorama Bar; but not exclusively, not in that amount, even if deepness in general is significant for the set of the three of us.

The party is taking place each second Friday of the month – for those who feel it.

What projects are up to come this year?

Properly in April or May there will be out a new track by Prosumer & me on Diamonds & Pearls.

Further I will compile and mix the next Panorama Bar CD (first one came from CASSY). It will be released likely on 24.08.2009; the release party would take place then on 22.08.2009 – off course at Panorama Bar. Even if this last question can surely not finally be answered: What records are necessities for every record collection? Please name, in extracts, just 10 representing tracks.

Milkshake. Der Terminus bedeutet ins Deutsche übersetzt Milchmixgetränk oder auch einfach Milchmix. Der Milkshake existiert bekanntermaßen in verschiedenen Geschmacksrichtungen und ist ein schmackhaftes, Energie stiftendes Genussmittel.

Auf der gleichnamigen Institution für elektronische LesbenClubkultur wird man den flüssigen Titelgeber zwar vergebens suchen, dafür liefert die Milkshake aber Mixe einer ganz besonderen Geschmacksrichtung in der lesbischen Partyund Musikszene Berlins.

Die Veranstaltungsreihe, die einem vorrangig lesbischen Publikum frische weibliche Techno- und House-DJs präsentiert, hat sich seit Mitte 2007 unter dem illustren Namen Milkshake etabliert – warum? Wer weiß das schon so genau? Schmeckt gut, klingt gut, ist gut.

Die Milkshake war ursprünglich die Idee und das Konzept ihrer beiden Gründerinnen Caro und Silke, die die Partyreihe in gemeinsamer Arbeit organisiert, veranstaltet und damit geradewegs nach vorne gebracht haben. Nachdem Silke, die die Milkshake in graphischer Hinsicht grundlegend geprägt hat, im Sommer 2008 aus zeitlichen Gründen die Partyreihe ihrerseits aufgeben musste, entschied sich Caro, die Milkshake angesichts der Zahl der bereits begeisterten Partyfreundinnen fortzuführen.

Anja, die in München schon in der elektronischen Clubszene gearbeitet hat und im letzten Jahr nach Berlin gezogen ist, steht Caro bei ihrer Organisation des Öfteren mit Ideen und Netzwerken zu Rate. Letztere knüpfen die beiden auch gemeinsam als Dotty zu anderen DJs und Partyveranstalterinnen, sowohl in Berlin als auch bundesweit.

Nina, ist die neue Frau für die Optik der Milkshake und führt die graphische Arbeit von Silke im Hintergrund des Partytreibens fort.

Der Anspruch, Frauen eine musikalisch und visuell qualitativ hochwertige Minimal, Techno und House Party zu einem fairen Eintritt zu präsentieren, war von Anfang an Bestandteil und ist stets Begleiter des in Berlin bislang einmaligen Konzepts geblieben.

Ist Milkshake Avantgarde unter den Berliner Frauenparties?

Ihr seid die erste und bislang einzige kontinuierliche Minimal Techno und House Party, die sich explizit an Frauen im Allgemeinen und Lesben und Transgender im Besonderen wendet - und zu der selbige auch tatsächlich in Scharen kommen.

Caro: Vorreiter? Als ich mit Silke die Milkshake gestartet habe, haben wir uns nie Gedanken darüber gemacht, ob wir jetzt Vorreiter sein wollen. Wir waren einfach in der Situation, uns zu entscheiden: Gehen wir auf Lesbenparties, und hören Indie, Pop, Rock, was auch nicht schlecht, aber nicht die Musik ist die wir auf Parties zum Tanzen mögen, oder wir gehen auf Techno-Parties und treffen da keine Lesben.

Darum haben wir uns dazu entschlossen, nicht mehr zu meckern, sondern eine eigene Party zu gründen.

Langweilig war es uns in Berlin bis dahin auch nicht, aber wir haben uns überlegt, so etwas könnte Berlin sehr gut gebrauchen. Und die Szene ist einfach da. Wir haben auch immer wieder Lesben getroffen, die derselben Meinung waren, die sich bislang aber immer in den unterschiedlichen Bezirken verstreut hatten.

Noch einmal nachgehakt. Was hat Euch dazu bewogen eine Frauenparty zu organisieren, die ausschließlich auf Techno und House DJs setzt?

Caro: Es ging hauptsächlich darum, dass wir die Musik mochten. Wir waren in der Panorama Bar, wir waren in der Bar25, WMF Sommerlager... das war so in der Entstehungszeit 2005. Wir waren dort begeistert von den DJs und es war für uns genau die Musik, die uns auf Parties zum Tanzen gebracht hat und die wir auf einer Party hören wollten. Diese Musik gab es eben auf Lesbenparties nicht. Da gibt es meist einen so genannten Electro-Floor, wo sie dann Electro-Clash, Synthie oder ähnliches auflegen. Das ist eben nicht das, was wir hören wollten.

Bislang läuft die Partyreihe noch auf rein leidenschaftlicher Basis und als Gastveranstaltung im Festsaal Kreuzberg. Hat

die Milkshake Ambitionen, sich mittel- oder langfristig zu einem eigenständigen Club zu etablieren? Die Party wird doch kontinuierlich besucht.

Caro: Ja, die Party wird kontinuierlich besucht. Es könnten natürlich noch immer mehr Leute sein, da die Milkshake auf einem relativ niedrigen Budget läuft. Es ist nicht wie bei der Girlstown, zu der so 700 Mädels kommen. Die Milkshake findet in einem kleineren Rahmen statt. Daher denke ich, dass es schwierig ist, eine solche Party in einem eigenen Club zu veranstalten.

Anja: Ich glaube auch, wenn wir die Milkshake kontinuierlich jedes Wochenende organisieren würden, wären nicht mehr der Kick und der Anreiz vorhanden, mit dem die Mädels zu uns kommen. Ich habe bereits einen Club mit aufgezogen und das ist schon ein großer Kraftakt. Vor allem auch dieses Nachtleben, bei dem man von zehn Uhr bis zum nächsten Tag dabei ist. Das geht schon an die Substanz und ich glaube, dass das auf Dauer nicht mein Ziel ist.

Nina: Das kann man dann eben nicht mehr nebenbei machen, sondern muss das als Fulltime-Job betreiben. Auch finanziell muss sich das erst einmal rechnen, das ist immer ein Risiko.

Caro: Es wäre sicher schwierig einen allein lesbischen Club zu starten – unabhängig davon, welche Musik gespielt wird.

Anja: An dieser Stelle will ich einwerfen, es gab in Paris Le Pulp. Das ist ein lesbischer Club, der sich eine lesbische Elektroveranstaltung hereingeholt hat.

Caro: Aber das ist dann ja auch eher dazu mutiert, dass da dann am Donnerstag Lesben-Abend war und am Wochenende war dort eine gemischte Elektroveranstaltung.

Anja: Nee, nee, Donnerstag gab es Lesben-Elektro-Parties die eher so die Pariser Szene – man darf natürlich Paris nicht mit Berlin vergleichen, da es dort nicht die gleiche Clubkultur gibt, wie hier. Die Franzosen sind ja nicht so die Technofans, sondern mögen eher Elektroclash. Insofern waren die Parties schon eher Underground und damit haben die Donnerstag Abende im Le Pulp eine Lücke gefüllt. Kein Rex konnte den Abend machen, in qualitativer Hinsicht, wie ihn Le Pulp gemacht hat.

Caro: Die waren schon Vorreiter, mussten aber leider schließen, da sie aufgekauft wurden, aber um noch einmal zurück zu Milkshake zu kommen.

Da wird sich jetzt auch etwas weiter bewegen. Ab Januar findet die Party nicht mehr im Festsaal Kreuzberg statt,

sondern in der Berghain Kantine, die zur Panorama Bar/ Berghain gehört. Die Panorama Bar und das Berghain, das ist die Techno-Institution in Berlin, der bekannteste Club – die haben ein eigenes Label. Da der Club von Schwulen betrieben wird, kommen dort natürlich auch viele Schwule aber auch Heteros hin. Die Lesben kommen allerdings noch immer zu kurz. Die Betreiber haben daher auch Lust darauf, die Lesben zu supporten. Und Tama Sumo und Steffi, die [als Resident DJs der Panorama Bar : Anm.d.Redaktion] dort involviert sind, haben uns extrem gut unterstützt und uns eingeladen, um mit der zuständigen Person für die Berghain Kantine einen Deal auszuhandeln.. Das ist natürlich für uns auch ein Schritt in die richtige Richtung, weil wir damit nicht nur in der Kultur der Lesbenszene sind, sondern auch in der Subkultur der elektronischen Szene. Dadurch können wir uns eben auch vielleicht einen Namen machen. Es gibt unendlich viele Techno-Parties in Berlin. Bislang aber nicht lesbisch orientiert. Da ist das eben auch ein großer Schritt in die Club-Richtung. Dort wollen wir die Milkshake auf jeden Fall einmal im Monat veranstalten.

Anja: Die Zusammenarbeit mit dem Berghain stellt natürlich auch eine Vorreiter-Position dar, denn im Gegensatz zu den Schwulen, die sich ihren eigenen Club geschaffen haben, gibt es das bei den Frauen bislang noch gar nicht.

Bei der Milkshake fällt im Gegensatz zu den meisten anderen Frauenparties auf, dass Ihr neben der eigentlichen Veranstaltung besonderen Wert auch auf anspruchsvolles Illustrations- und Graphik-Design, und damit verbunden, das Merchandising legt. Ist der visuelle Auftritt „nur“ ein Mittel zum zweck, die Party noch mehr im Berliner Nachtleben zu verankern oder sind Euch diese visuellen Effekte auch ein ganz eigenes Anliegen und weshalb?

Nina: Das ist für uns tatsächlich ein wichtiger Faktor, dass wir die Leidenschaft, von der wir vorhin gesprochen haben, auch in jeden einzelnen Flyer stecken und versuchen, visuell etwas zu verpacken, was auf der Milkshake letztlich zu erwarten ist. Wir wollen in der Richtung auch ein bisschen weiter gehen. Wir haben bereits mit Visuals angefangen und es macht Spaß, sich kreativ auszutoben - im Team, denn es ist zum großen Teil auch eine Teamarbeit. Wir wollen für die Milkshake auf jeden Fall auch eine visuelle Sprache entwickeln. Aber natürlich geht es auch darum, qualitativ heraus zustechen.

Caro: Wir wollen damit auch das, was wir gut finden,

verkörpern. Dieser Flyer soll vom Design her auch Leute anziehen, die den Flyer gut finden; genauso wie die Party die Leute anziehen soll, die die Musik gut finden, und nicht nur, weil es eine Lesbenparty ist. Es war nie von Anfang an die Idee, dass wir gesagt haben, Berlin braucht noch eine Lesben-Party, bei der die Lesben am Rand der Tanzfläche stehen und sich gegenseitig abchecken. Es geht uns wirklich um die Musik. Es geht darum, dass die Leute da hinkommen und tanzen. Es geht darum, dass die Leute den Flyer sehen und hinkommen, weil sie das Konzept interessiert. Und es geht natürlich auch darum, dass die Leute, die zu unserer Party kommen, sich wohl fühlen. Wir schließen niemanden aus, sondern lassen auch Männer in weiblicher Begleitung rein, was ich sehr wichtig finde – eben dass man sich nicht so ausschließend verhält. Wer sich auffällig verhält wird rausgeschmissen, aber es ist bislang noch auf keiner Party vorgekommen, dass eine Frau sich darüber beschwert hat, dass sie von einem Typen unangenehm angemacht wurde.

Das ist eben wichtig, dass man gemeinsam feiern kann, ohne, dass man sich irgendwie belästigt oder bedrängt fühlt.

Anja: Zu mir sagen auch viele heterosexuelle Frauen, die auf die Party kommen, dass sie es total angenehm finden.

In den meisten Techno-Clubs in Berlin hast Du zu bestimmt 80 Prozent Männer, und auf die 20 Prozent Frauen stürzen sich dann die 80 Prozent Männer und nicht jede findet das unbedingt gut, zumal, wenn sie in einer Beziehung ist.

Daher empfinden viele Frauen unsere Party auch als sehr entspannt. Und dazu soll sie da sein, dass man tanzt, und einfach seine Freude daran hat.

Caro: Es geht ja auch nicht immer darum, auf eine Party zu gehen, um jemanden aufzureißen. Wir wollen mit der Musik auch qualitativ etwas bieten. Und es geht aus unserer Sicht auch darum, Freunde zu treffen.

Welchen DJ würdet Ihr gerne unbedingt auf einer Eurer Veranstaltungen auflegen oder ein Live-Set spielen lassen und hattet sie aber noch nicht dabei?

Caro: Es gibt natürlich schon große weibliche DJs, die ich gut finde. Die zu buchen, sprengt allerdings im Moment noch den finanziellen Rahmen. Das wird wahrscheinlich auch weiterhin so sein, denn 1.500 Leute werden nicht auf die Milkshake kommen. Es soll auch gar nicht so kommerziell sein. Ich möchte ... neue Talente finden oder DJs, die noch nicht so bekannt sind. Es geht uns nicht darum, Name-

Dropping zu betreiben, um die Leute anzuziehen. Wir wollen Besucher dadurch gewinnen, dass wir in die Richtung ....

Techno, House, Deep House gehen. Natürlich sind wir froh, wenn wir DJs wie Tama Sumo treffen, die Resident in der Panorama Bar ist, die aber auch riesige Lust hat, die Lesbenkultur im Rahmen unserer finanziellen Möglichkeiten zu unterstützen. Das hat mich wirklich sehr gefreut. Und als Tama Sumo dann auf der Party aufgelegt hat, war sie so glücklich darüber, endlich Lesben auf der Tanzfläche zu sehen, dass ihr die Gage in dem Moment nicht so wichtig war, als die lesbische Kultur zu unterstützen. Sie hat eben vor einem Jahrzehnt schon auf Lesbenparties gespielt und da hat es eben überhaupt nicht funktioniert, die Frauen für House zu begeistern. Selbstverständlich ist das für uns super, wenn wir DJs wie Tama Sumo dabei haben.

Es geht aber auch nicht darum, ausschließlich lesbische DJs zu finden, sondern insgesamt weibliche DJs auf der Milkshake zu präsentieren. Wir sind eher daran interessiert, DJs zu finden, die, wie wir, mit Vinyl auflegen und man merkt, dass eine Ideologie dahinter steckt.

Bei Euch spielen nicht nur DJs aus Berlin ihre Sets, sondern auch Djs von außerhalb. Und auch Ihr selbst legt beispielsweise in München oder Köln auf. Welche Bedeutung und Potenzial haben überregionale Beziehungen für Milkshake?

Caro: Die Netzwerke zu den Münchenern und Augsburgern bestanden bereits vorher. Die Tini und die Daniela La Luz sind alte Freunde von der Anja. Als Anja und ich angefangen haben, aufzulegen, waren wir in Augsburg, die Tini spielt auch öfter hier. An sich finde ich es auch super wichtig, DJs von außerhalb Berlins einzuladen. Netzwerke sind sehr wichtig. Die Verbindung nach Köln haben Anja und ich durch eine Besucherin der Milkshake bekommen, die in Köln solche Parties organisiert. Insgesamt ist das eine Entwicklung über die Zeit hinweg.

Anja: Ich bin vor einem Jahr nach Berlin gezogen und kannte mich in der Berliner Lesbenszene nicht so wirklich aus, wusste aber dass ich elektronische Musik hören wollte. Über das Myspace-Netzwerk bin ich auf Milkshake gestoßen. Und da wird die Milkshake schon in Verbindung mit Elektronischer Musik und der Lesbischen Kultur in Berlin gebracht. Das geht an der Stelle auch über Berlin hinaus und die Leute schauen auch auf die Milkshake und wollen auch so eine Party in ihrer Stadt. Das ist für uns natürlich ein Kompliment.

Caro: Es wäre natürlich schön, wenn es eine solche Party in jeder großen Stadt gäbe, aber wir haben auch nicht die Zeit die Milkshake bundesweit zu organisieren. Aber die Netzwerke, die durch das Organisieren der Party entstanden sind, die können Anja und ich natürlich auch sehr gut für unser DJ-Team nutzen. Wir organisieren so oftmals eine Art Austausch mit Parties in anderen Städten. Dadurch lernen wir dort auch wieder neue DJs kennen, die wir dann zur Milkshake einladen können. DJs über Booking-Agenturen zu engagieren, wäre viel teurer. Das wäre für uns viel schwieriger, da wir dann mehr Eintritt nehmen müssten. Einen höheren Eintritt möchte ich nicht verlangen, da ich denke, dass viele Besucher nicht bereit sind, zehn Euro zu bezahlen, was ich selbst gut verstehen kann. Ich finde, sieben Euro sind ein fairer Deal. Das war auch von Anfang an der Plan, dass wir uns auf dem Preisniveau bewegen, auf dem alles finanziert werden kann, aber auch die Leute kommen, die eben nicht in Clubs gehen, in denen sie zehn Euro oder mehr zahlen müssten.

fehlt – ein Fanzine, eine Plakatserie, oder weitere T-Shirts zu gestalten. Wir haben auf jeden Fall Lust, den Bereich auszuweiten. Die Zeit und die Finanzen fehlen noch, aber wer weiß...

Noch ein Statement zum Schluss?!

Anja: Yes, we can!

Habt Ihr als Dotty (Milkshake Residents) mittel- oder langfristig Label- oder Produktions-Ambitionen?

Caro: Wir haben Lust! [lacht] Anja: Die Lust ist vorhanden. Die Zeit, um sich so was anzueignen ist, eher das eigentliche Problem. Ich habe mich auch noch nicht wirklich damit befasst. Wenn ich das machen würde, dann wäre ich sicher nicht der digitale Softwarenutzer, eher der analoge Synthiziser – Drum Computer und ins Mikrofon-Kreischer. Das wäre ich dann wahrscheinlich eher.

Das hat also Potenzial!

Anja: Das habe ich schon mal ein bisschen mit einer Software ausprobiert, aber das war für mich so unspannend.

Caro: Damit könnte ich auch keine Musik produzieren. Ich brauche etwas Haptisches. Das ist für mich genauso wie mit Platten. Die sind auch etwas Haptisches. Ich würde auch nicht oder ungerne mit Computer – und auch nicht mit CDs – auflegen.

Gibt es weitere Projekte im Rahmen der Milkshake?

Caro: Was das Grafikdesign betrifft, haben wir auf jeden Fall Lust, über das bisherige hinauszugehen.

The Milkshake... It exists in many different flavors and is a tasty stimulant giving you energy. At the correspondent institution for electronic lesbian culture one won‘t find the liquid donor of the title, but instead Milkshake delivers mixes of a very extraordinary flavor in the lesbian party and music scene of Berlin. The series of parties presenting fresh female Techno and House DJs to a mostly lesbian audience has established itself under the illustrious name „Milkshake“.

Why?...who knows? Tastes good, sounds good, is good.

Milkshake was originally the idea and concept of the two founders Caro and Silke, who organized and hosted the party in collective work and moved it straight forward. After Silke has essentially shaped Milkshake in graphic terms, but had to give up the series of parties for temporal reasons in the summer of 2008 , Caro decided to continue Milkshake in view of the many enthusiastic, female party people. Anja, who‘s been working in the electronic music scene already and who moved to Berlin last year is helping Caro with words and deeds quite often when it comes to organization, ideas and networking.

Together as Dotty they also forge links to other DJs and party planners in the area of Berlin as well as nationwide. Nina is the new girl for the optic of Milkshake and continues the graphic work of Silke in the background of all the party hustle and bustle. The demand of presenting women a musically and visually attractive, first-class minimal, Techno and House party at a fair price has always been a part of this -until now- unique concept in Berlin.

Is Milkshake vanguard in Berlin‘s women‘s parties? You are the first, and until now, only continuous minimal techno and house party which appeals to women in general, and lesbians and transgender people in particular – and to which those are actually coming in droves.

Caro: Vanguard? Maybe. But when I started “Les ciseaux électroniques“ with Miona we never thought about the fact whether we wanted to be vanguard or not. We were simply in a situation in which we had to decide: Do we go to lesbian parties and listen to Indie, Pop, Rock which is not bad, but not our type of music, or do we go to Techno parties where we don‘t meet any lesbians. That‘s why we decided not to bitch about it any longer, but to start our own party. Until then, it hasn‘t been boring for us in Berlin, but we thought

that Berlin could totally need something like that since the scene is there. We have met lesbians over and over again who had the same opinion. They‘ve just always scattered in all the different areas.

To dig a little deeper...What persuaded you to organize a women‘s party which strictly focuses on Techno and House DJs? Caro: It was mainly about the fact that we liked this music.

We were at Panorama Bar, Bar25 and WMF Sommerlager (summer camp)...that was pretty much in the date of origin back in 2005. We were enthusiastic about the DJs there and it was exactly the type of music that made us dance and which we wanted to hear at a party. This music didn‘t exist at lesbian parties. There was mostly a so-called electro floor where they spin Electroclash, Synthie or the like. This is, as I said, not something that we wanted.

Up to now, the party series runs on a sheer passionate basis and as a guest event at the Festsaal Kreuzberg. Does Milkshake have – medium or long term- any ambitions to establish itself as an independent club, since the party is continuously attended?

Caro: Yes, the party is indeed frequently attended. Of course, there could always be more people there, as Milkshake runs on a relatively low budget. It‘s not like at Girlstown where about 700 girls are coming every time. Milkshake takes place on a smaller scale. That‘s why I think that it‘s difficult to host such a party at an own club.

Anja: I also think that if one could organize Milkshake every weekend, there just wouldn‘t be the appeal with which the girls arrive. Organizing and running a club is a massive effort.

Especially having to work at night takes it out of you in the long run and is not my aim.

Nina: You just can‘t do something like that along the way.

You would have to practice it as a full-time job. It must also be profitable financially, and that‘s always a risk.

Caro: It would certainly be difficult starting a strictly lesbian club, regardless of the music which is played there.

Anja: At this point, I‘d like to throw in that there was a lesbian club in Paris called Le Pulp where they played only electronic music in the evenings.

Caro: But then again, it kind of mutated into being a lesbian night on Thursday and on weekends there was a mixed electro event.

Anja: On Thursdays they had minimal-electro parties which really enriched Paris‘ Techno scene. Sure, you can‘t compare Paris to Berlin, because the club culture there isn‘t the same. The French are mostly not that much of Techno fans and usually prefer Electroclash. Insofar, the parties were a true insiders trip and therewith a huge success.

Caro: They were vanguard, but had to close since they were bought up, but to get back to Milkshake : Things are also starting to move. From January on the party will not be taking place at the Festsaal Kreuzberg any longer, and will be moved to Kantine which belongs to the PanoramaBar. The PanoramaBar and the Berghain, which is the Techno institution in Berlin, the most popular club, with corresponding label and booking agency. Since the club is mostly organized by gay men, the audience is mainly made up of homosexual men, too. Lesbians are still missing out.

Therefore, the carriers feel like supporting Milkshake. Tama Sumo and Steffi (who work as resident DJs at the Panorama Bar: note of the editorial staff) who are involved in there have supported us extremely well and have enabled a meeting with the management. For us, this is definitely a step into. the right direction, because with this, we are no longer in the culture of the lesbian scene, but also in the subculture of the electronic music scene. Thus, we can make a name for ourselves. There are endlessly many Techno parties in Berlin and until now, were were the only ones who were lesbian.

That‘s as well a big step into the club direction where we definitely want to host Milkshake once a month.

In contrast to most of the other women‘s parties, it stands out with Milkshake that you seem to particularly value superior illustration and graphic design aside from the actual event and - tied to that - the merchandising. Is the visual appearance „only“ a means to an end to embed the party in Berlin‘s night life, or are these visual effects also your own special concern and why?

Nina: For us, it is actually an important factor that we put the effort and passion about which we spoke before into every single flyer and try to visually wrap something which can ultimately be expected at Milkshake. We also planned on going further into this direction. We have already started with visuals and it‘s fun to creatively let off stream – in a team since it‘s teamwork for the most part. We definitely want to develop a visual language for milkshake, but of course it‘s also about standing out concerning the quality.

Caro: With this, we want to embody something which we like.

From its design, the flyer is supposed to allure people who like it. Just like the party is supposed to allure people who like the music and not just, because it‘s a lesbian party. From the beginning on, it was never the idea that we said Berlin needs another lesbian party where the girls are standing on the side of the dancefloor checking each other out. It‘s really about the music. It‘s about having people go there and dance. It‘s about people seeing the flyer and going there, because they‘re interested in the concept. And of course, it‘s also about making people who attend the party have a good time and feel comfortable. We don‘t exclude anyone, but also let in men in female company which I find really important. People who behave badly get thrown out, but so far it hasn‘t happened that a woman complained about being awkwardly hit on by a guy. That‘s what‘s important...that you can party together without feeling molested or hassled.

Which DJ would you absolutely love to have spinning or playing a live set at one of your events, but whom you haven‘t had yet?

Caro: There are, of course, already some pretty big female DJs out there whom I like, but to book them would blow our budget at this point. This is most likely going to continue to be the state, because there are just not going to be 1500 people at Milkshake. It‘s also not meant to be so commercial.

I‘d like to find new talents or DJs who aren‘t well known. It‘s not about practicing name-dropping to catch the attention of people. We want to win people over by going into the minimal Techno, house and deep house direction. Certainly, we are glad when we meet DJs like Tama Sumo who is the resident DJ at Panorama Bar, but who‘s also motivated to support the lesbian culture in the context of our financial possibilities. I was really pleased about that... And when Tama Sumo spun the turntables at our party she was so happy about finally seeing lesbians on the dancefloor that she didn‘t really care about the fee in this moment as much as supporting lesbian culture. She has already played at lesbian parties decades ago, and back then getting the women into house music just didn‘t work. Naturally, it‘s great for us when we have DJs like Tama Sumo with us, but it‘s not about finding exclusively lesbian DJs, but about finding female DJs in general to present at Milkshake. We are also more interested in finding DJs who spin with vinyl like us and one recognizes that there‘s an ideology behind that.

At Milkshake, not only DJs from Berlin play their sets, but also DJs non-locals and even you guys spin, for example in Munich or Cologne. What kind of of meaning and potential do nationwide connections have for Milkshake?

Caro: The networks to the people from Munich and Augsburg have existed before. Tini and Daniela La Luz are old friends of Anja. When Anja and I started to spin we were in Augsburg where Tini plays more often. I actually also think that it‘s super important to invite DJs from outside of Berlin.

Networks are really important. Me and Anja have received the connection to Cologne through a guest of Milkshake who organizes such parties there. Overall, it‘s a development throughout the course of time.

Anja: I moved to Berlin a year ago and didn‘t really know the lesbian scene there, but I knew that I wanted to hear electronic music. Through myspace, I came across Milkshake and there it was already associated with electronic music and lesbian culture in Berlin. At this place, it outruns Berlin and people look at Milkshake and also want a party like that in their city. That‘s definitely a compliment for us.

Caro: It would of course be great, if there was such a party in every big city, but we don‘t have the time to organize Milkshake nationwide. The networks which evolved from organizing the party, though, are very useful for mine and Anja‘s DJ sets. We often organize a kind of exchange with parties in other cities. By doing this, we get to meet other DJs there whom we can invite to Milkshake. Engaging someone through a booking agency would be way to expensive, since that would mean having to raise the admission charge. I don‘t want to require a higher charge, because I think that many guests are not willing to pay 10 Euro which I can totally understand. I think, 6 Euro are a fair deal. It has been the plan from the beginning on to move on a price level on which everything can be financed and that those people come who just don‘t go to clubs in which they have to pay 10 Euro or even more.

So, I guess you have potential!

Anja: I‘ve tried this with a software a little bit before, but that was so unexciting for me.

Caro: I couldn‘t produce music with that, either. I need something haptic. It‘s the same for me as it is with LPs. They are also something haptic. I wouldn‘t at all, or only unwillingly to put on tunes with a computer and also not with CDs. Are there any more projects within the framework of Milkshake?

Caro: Concerning the graphic design, we feel like going further than what we‘ve done before Nina: There is the idea -although we are currently lacking time- of creating a fanzine, a poster series, or more t-shirts.

We definitely feel like expanding this area. Time and money are missing yet, but who knows...?

Anja: Yes, we can!

Do you, as Dotty (Milkshake residents) have any label or production ambitions long- or midterm?

Caro: We are up to it! [laughs] Anja: The desire exists. The time to acquire something like that is the actual problem and I haven‘t occupied myself with that, yet. If I would do it then I would surely not be the digital software user, rather the analog-synthesizer-drum

Du hast das DJ-ing 1989 zunächst mit Jazz und Funk und sogar Hip Hop Sets begonnen. Wie und wann kamst Du letztlich zum Techno?

Eigentlich über ein paar Schlüsselplatten. Das war vor allem Dj Rush, als allererster. Eine Platte auf Saber Records – das Label kennt eigentlich heutzutage kein Mensch mehr; ein Urgestein unter den Chicagoer Labels. In weiterer Folge Underground Resistance. Und dann kam auch eigentlich sehr bald die Zeit, in der ich 1991 die deutsche Techno Szene über DJ Hell kennen gelernt habe und unmittelbar danach das Hardwax in Berlin. Das war eigentlich das Hauptding für mich, der Laden und die Szene in Deutschland - und wie das dort DJ-mäßig abgegangen ist. Da habe ich mir dann schon gedacht, das ist das, was ich auch machen möchte.

Wie hast Du dann den Beginn und die Entwicklung dieser Techno- und House Ära seit Anfang der 1990er Jahre in Berlin erlebt?

Dazu muss ich einleitend sagen, als ich 1993 nach Berlin gezogen bin, und 1992 schon meine ersten DJ-Auftritte in Deutschland hatte, da hatte ich eigentlich permanent ein schlechtes Gewissen, zu spät dran zu sein, mit Techno. Denn die, die damals schon gut im Business waren, die meinten: Was, Du kommst erst jetzt drauf? [lacht] Ich war dort so ein bisschen schüchterne Newcomerin. Aber was Berlin so ausgezeichnet hat, waren diese ganzen Freiräume, die es hier gab. Und das ist auch ganz wörtlich zu nehmen. Das lag daran, dass so viele Besitzverhältnisse nach der Wende nicht geklärt waren und die Leute einfach in irgendwelche Gebäude rein sind und dort Parties veranstaltet haben.

Absolut Stil prägend für die Berliner 1990er Jahre war in meinen Augen ganz sicher auch der Friseur und Elektro - und ja, natürlich auch die großen Clubs wie der Tresor und Planet beziehungsweise E-Werk. Aber diese kleinen, irgendwie ziemlich freakig organisierten Clubs, die haben schon mehr widergespiegelt, was das eigentlich kreative Potenzial in der Stadt ist. Da gibt es auch viele Leute aus der Szenerie, mit denen ich heute noch im Kontakt bin -

zum Beispiel aus dem Friseur, daraus hat sich die halbe De:bug Belegschaft generiert. Auf der anderen Seite war ich total mit Lernen und Arbeiten beschäftigt. Ich habe ständig alle Informationen aufgesogen und mich da wirklich voll hineingekniet. Insofern war ich sozial gar nicht so wirklich tief eingebunden in die Stadt. Deswegen kann ich Dir einiges über DJ-Praxis und Hardwax erzählen, aber nicht gar so viel zur Szene in Berlin.

Und zu Hardwax?

Hardwax war irgendwie ein ganz wichtiger internationaler Knotenpunkt für Techno, Electro und House. Es ist eigentlich ein sehr schönes Beispiel dafür, wie Netzwerken vor den Zeiten des Internets funktioniert hat. Man hat sich einfach dort in dem Laden getroffen. Das war ein physischer Ort, wo die Fäden zusammengelaufen und auch die Informationen ausgetauscht worden sind. Das hatte natürlich auch sehr viel mit einigen Clubs zu tun, zum Beispiel dem Tresor, die mit ihrem Label die ganzen Verbindungen nach Detroit verstärkt haben. Aber da war der Mark Ernestus, der wahrscheinlich einer der ersten war, aus Deutschland und aus Berlin, die auch nach Chicago und Detroit gefahren sind und wirklich auch dort vor Ort die ganzen Leute kennengelernt und die Platten eingekauft und hierher gebracht haben. Im Unterschied zu heute war die Infrastruktur, die Verteilung der Platten auch noch nicht so entwickelt wie heute, oder sagen wir, wie vor fünf Jahren, weil wir jetzt ohnehin ein ganz anderes Problem mit den Plattenläden und den physischen Tonträgern haben.

Jedenfalls gab es im Hardwax jede Menge gesuchte und tolle Platten, die in anderen Läden einfach nicht zu kaufen waren, oder erst sehr viel später nach München oder Wien gekommen sind. Das war quasi paradiesisch für mich als DJ, dort zu arbeiten.

Du bist 1996 nach Wien zurück gegangen. War zu der Zeit eine Ära für Dich zu Ende, oder hattest Du spezielle Pläne, die Du in Wien besser verwirklichen konntest?

Das hatte eigentlich private Gründe. Das lag vor allem daran,

dass ich ein bisschen überstürzt aus Wien weggegangen bin - also ich hatte dort unerledigtes Zeug – und dann in Berlin drei Jahre lang, wie gesagt, fast nur gearbeitet habe und irgendwie nur wenig soziale Einbettung hatte. Das hat mir dann irgendwann gefehlt. Und merkwürdiger Weise, sobald ich diesen Entschluss gefasst hatte, ich gehe nach Wien zurück, hat das schon begonnen, sich zu relativieren. Ich habe dann einfach privat Leute kenne gelernt. Mein Blick hat sich geöffnet. Also, ich war drei Jahre lang wirklich total fokussiert auf die Musik und auf das Auflegen. Mit dem Entschluss nach Wien zurück zu gehen, hat sich dass dann wieder ein bisschen normalisiert.

Hast Du während Deiner eit in Berlin auch produziert?

Ja, schon immer wieder, aber immer bei anderen Leuten im Studio. Meine erste Platte kam, glaube ich, 1993 raus. Das war eine Nummer, die ich mit Richard Bartz gemacht habe – in München. München, das war auch so ein Anker für mich; Und dann mit Pulsinger und Tunakan zwei Wienern. Das kam fast zeitgleich auf einem New Yorker Label raus.

Abgesehen davon, dass Du in den einschlägigen Clubs in Europa, Amerika und Asien aufgelegt hast, warst Du 2002 Teil des Line-Ups des Detroit Electronic Music Festes. Was war das für ein Gefühl, dort - faktisch in der Mutterstadt des Techno-Sounds - ein Set zu spielen?

Das hat mich natürlich total gefreut. Ich glaube, das war das zweite oder dritte Detroit Electronic Music Fest, das es gab. Das allererste ist von Carl Craig organisiert worden, aber dann gab es da wohl interne Schwierigkeiten. Bei dem Fest, auf dem ich aufgelegt habe, war Carl Craig nicht mehr dabei.

Ich bin mir nicht mehr ganz sicher, ob es das Zweite war oder das Dritte. Als dieses Booking kam, wusste ich schon, es ist nicht mehr ganz so cool, weil Carl organisiert es nicht mehr, aber es hat mich natürlich trotzdem wahnsinnig gefreut und es war eine ganz große Ehre.

Aber es war nicht das erste Mal, dass ich in Detroit war.

Detroit war für mich einfach so wichtig, dass ich dort zwischendurch hingeflogen bin und die Leute besucht habe; was auch deswegen ging, weil Mark vom Hardwax die auch kannte, vor allem die Underground Resistance Leute.

Ist diese Detroit- Erfahrung das Stil prägende Moment für Deine Arbeit?

Ja, das zieht sich schon so ein bisschen wie ein roter Faden durch. Diese ein bisschen melancholische oder dunkel gefärbte Funkiness, die für Detroit typisch ist, aber auch die Chicago Tracks Geschichten, die eher Beat orientierten Sachen – ganz sicher. Aber irgendwann hat sich das auch irgendwie aufgelöst, was sicher auch daran lag, dass ganz viele DJs aus Detroit weggegangen sind, die dort den Sound geprägt haben. Die ganze amerikanische Szene hat in den letzten acht Jahren zumindest schwer gelitten, beispielsweise der große Vertrieb Watts, der vor vielen Jahren schon pleite gegangen ist. Dazu kommt das, was sie immer schon beklagt haben, dass sie kein Airplay, haben und insofern insgesamt auch kaum Überlebenschancen für die Musiker und paar Musikerinnen. Einige sind auch nach Europa gegangen und der Austausch ist immer intensiver geworden. Dieses Detroit-Motiv oder die Detroit-Färbung sind in ganz vielen Produktionen mittlerweile. Wer mir aktuell gerade einfällt und was irgendwie ganz typisch ist, Fabrice Lig - der ist ein Belgier -, der macht extrem Detroitigen Sound und kommt natürlich nicht aus Detroit, aber hat das echt gut drauf [lacht].

Du hast auch im Le Pulp in Paris Sets gespielt? Wann war das und wie war die Atmosphäre dort? Ist doch sehr bekannt für seine elektronische Frauenparty, die sie damals hatten?

Da gab es verschiedene Abende. Wenn ich mich richtig erinnere, gab es den Donnerstag, der rein lesbisch angelegt war. Dann gab es den Freitag, der nicht so vorgegeben war, im Hinblick auf das Publikum, aber es waren immer ganz viele Lesben dort. Es ist halt eine ganz starke lesbische Elektronik-Szene, die es dort in Paris gibt. Die ist dann vielleicht recht überschaubar, nachdem was ich so von Kolleginnen und Freundinnen gehört habe, dass sie dort jede kennen, und man sieht immer wieder dieselben Gesichter.

Das war eigentlich immer sehr, sehr lustig. Also, einmal, daran kann ich mich erinnern, war ich höchst befremdet, weil ich, während ich aufgelegt habe, nur Typen gesehen und mir gedacht habe, was ist denn jetzt los? Das war aber auch eher gegen Ende der Zeit des Le Pulp. Aber ja, das war ein coole alternative Szene in Paris, die nicht so komisch hype fashion aufgeladen war wie viele andere Richtungen, die sich

in Paris etabliert haben – aber auch schon verbunden mit einem sehr typischen Stil. Die Mädels hätte ich, ohne sie zu kennen, auf der Straße als Le Pulp Stammgäste identifizieren können [lacht].

Vielleicht noch etwas zum Le Pulp, was eigentlich das Skurrile und Nette am Le Pulp war, dass es eigentlich ein alteingesessenes Tanzcafé war. Das war auch nach wie vor aktiv. Das heißt, so Fünf-Uhr-Tee-mäßig haben dort, ich weiß nicht, am Wochenende oder einen Tag in der Woche, ältere Leute ihre Paartanzveranstaltungen gehabt. Und danach wurde von außen ein Schild drüber gehängt, worauf stand Le Pulp, und dann war es die rein lesbische oder lesbisch geprägte Angelegenheit.

Hattest Du öfter Bookings dort?

Ja, immer wieder. Die Jennifer Cardini ist eine sehr gute Freundin von mir und mit der Fany [Le Pulp Organisatorin; Anm. Redaktion], die ich über Jennifer kenne, bin ich mittlerweile auch befreundet. Eine Zeit lang war ich so oft dort, dass die Leute gedacht haben, ich wohne in Paris.

Ich möchte noch einmal nach Wien zurück und damit auf Deine weitere Arbeit als Labelbetreiberin und Netzwerkerin zu sprechen kommen. Du hast 1998 Indigo:inc gegründet und zeitgleich auch das Netzwerk female:pressure. Was war Deine Intention für female:pressure? Die Internet-Plattform ist bislang einmalig, oder?

Nein, es gibt auf der Website von female:pressure auch Links zu anderen Netzwerken, die allerdings später gekommen sind. Es gibt einige, aber female:pressure hat dann schon ein paar Eigenschaften, die es wesentlich von den anderen unterscheiden. Ich bin nicht mit einer Gender Issue im Kopf DJ geworden, sondern ich habe ganz normal als Ich angefangen, Platten aufzulegen. Vom Publikum oder irgendwelchen Rezipienten wurde ich allerdings immer wieder mit der Nase drauf gestoßen: Wahnsinn, Du machst das als Frau, unglaublich, und wie ist das? Oder richtig beleidigend: Für eine Frau kein schlechtes Taktgefühl, oder ähnlich Blödes: Es ist erstaunlich, dass Du das als Frau machst. Es gibt ja kaum jemanden. Und dann kam vielleicht ein Beispiel-Name von irgendeiner, die halt besonders berühmt war. Und meine Antwort war dann immer eine rudimentäre Aufzählungen von Kolleginnen, wo ich dann gesagt habe: Stimmt schon, es gibt

mehr Jungs als Mädels, aber wir haben doch noch… Und dann habe ich begonnen, andere Kolleginnen aufzuzählen.

Und die Reaktion war dann meist: Ja, stimmt. Aja, richtig.

Oder es gab Festivals oder Konferenzen, zu denen dann irgendwie keine Frau eingeladen war und ich Gelegenheit hatte, bei den Veranstaltern mal nachzufragen, warum. Und dann hieß es beispielsweise: Kelly Hand hatte keine Zeit, oder: Monika Kruse war schon gebucht. Also, es war immer nur ein einziger Name, der genannt wurde. Den Leuten ist halt immer nur eine eingefallen, oder im besseren Falle vielleicht auch zwei Kolleginnen. Und ich habe mir gedacht, jetzt reicht es langsam. Man muss das systematisieren.

Ich habe dann mehr oder weniger privat begonnen, meine Aufzeichnungen zu machen und eine Liste von Kolleginnen anzulegen und ihre Kontakte zu sammeln. Das war bevor Internet so gebräuchlich war wie heute. Und insofern ging das auch etwas zäher voran, als das jetzt grundsätzlich möglich ist. Dann habe ich versucht, daraus eine Datenbank zu machen und mir überlegt, wie kann man das online stellen.

Ganz am Anfang war es eine HTML-Liste und dann gab es auch gewiss bestimmte Widrigkeiten, bis ich dann 2001 die Andrea Mayr kennen lernte - die wurde mir vermittelt.

Eigentlich hätte ich das gerne schon von Anfang an auf Open Source-Basis gehabt, weil ich finde, dass Open Source dem Gedanken von female:pressure total gerecht wird. Und ich hätte gern eine Open Source programmierte Datenbank gehabt - das kann ich nicht selber machen – am besten von einer Frau programmiert. Das war nicht ganz einfach.

Aber irgendwann war es wirklich dringend notwendig, weil der eine Server nicht mehr funktionierte und es kamen Probleme von außen, die das forciert haben. Seitdem gibt es diese eigentlich erstaunlich stabil laufende, von der Andrea Mayr programmierte Datenbank mit einer eigenen Domain.

Das war natürlich schon ein weiterer Schritt, der meiner Idee näher kam, oder sehr nahe kam, dass man die Website auch durchsuchen kann. Das funktionierte am Anfang nicht, weil es eine HTML-Liste war. Das hat mich auch immer wahnsinnig gewurmt, aber das ist ja auch nicht ewig so geblieben [lacht].

Wo steht female:pressure heute im Vergleich zu damals?

Das eine war der technische Aspekt. Inhaltlich ist es klar,

dass es in Deutschland und Österreich zum Beispiel eben nicht mehr besonders exotisch ist, wenn eine Frau an den Turntables steht. Wenn es um Musik geht, die von Frauen produziert wird, sieht es schon wieder anders aus. Darauf einen gewissen Wert zu legen, das ist noch viel exotischer; vergleichbar mit dem Status Quo von vor zehn Jahren bei den DJs. Es sind natürlich viel mehr geworden und dieses Netzwerk hat sich auch schon wesentlich verbreitert. Es ist leider immer noch nicht obsolet. Das ist natürlich im Endeffekt die Zielvorstellung, dass man so eine Plattform nicht mehr braucht, weil es ganz egal ist, welches Geschlecht ein DJ hat, oder was auch immer es dazwischen geben mag.

Wir sind auf dem Weg. Es gibt da viel, was ich mir auch noch besser vorstellen könnte, was man Community-technisch und überhaupt technisch vielleicht an Projekten auf die Beine stellen kann. Ein erster Schritt in so eine Richtung ist das open:sounds Projekt, dass Frauen sich musikalisch auch mehr untereinander austauschen, mit ihrer Kunst, die sie machen. Das fände ich schon gut, aber da gibt es keinen genauen Aktionsplan. Es hängt auch immer davon ab, wie sich Sachen finanzieren lassen. Im Grunde ist es ja mein Privatvergnügen. Einzelne Projekte sind in Wien vom Verein Stadtimpuls Wien gefördert worden: die erste open:sounds CD wie auch die DVD zum zehnjährigen Jubiläum. Und wenn man so eine Förderung bekommt, dann kann man es sich natürlich auch leisten, so etwas weiterzuentwickeln.

Ansonsten ist es schon meine private Zeit und mein privates Budget, das Ding am Laufen zu halten und zu aktualisieren und neue Members einzufangen [lacht].

Wie kam es betreffend die open:sounds CD zu dem Line Up? Hast Du die Mitwirkenden angefragt, oder sind die auf Dich zugegangen und wollten sich beteiligen?

Im Prinzip ist es so, dass die open:sounds MusikproduktionsPlattform von female:pressure-Members genutzt werden kann - aber auch nur von female:pressure-Members, denn man braucht dazu ein Login. Für beispielsweise das CDProjekt und auch für die DVD gab es konkrete Aufrufe: Hey, wir haben das Projekt vor. Nutzt doch open:sounds und stellt Eure Musik online. Da waren alle frei eingeladen, etwas zu machen. Nur die Compilation, die auf entweder der DVD oder auf der CD drauf sind, das habe ich alleine ausgesucht.

Es sind alle Tracks gestreamt auf der Seite, und da gibt es

keine Auswahl. Das gilt für alle, die etwas Online gestellt haben.

Auch wenn wir das implizit angesprochen haben, ich frage dennoch explizit noch einmal nach; hast Du ein zukünftiges Projekt im Rahmen von Indigo:inc oder female:pressure in Planung?

Ja, das mit indigo:inc (meinem Label) ist so, dass es derzeit seit ungefähr drei Jahren schläft und ich auf jeden Fall nächstes Jahr mindestens eine neue Maxi von mir rausbringen möchte. Es ist leider alles noch nicht wirklich spruchreif. Nachdem ich jetzt viel intensiver als früher an Live Acts gearbeitet habe und zur Zeit relativ viel live spiele, gibt es natürlich einiges an Material. Das ist zum Teil auch bereits ausproduziert, zum Großteil noch nicht. Das würde ich gerne rausbringen. Nur habe ich keinen Vertrieb und es ist auch eine finanzielle Frage. Das gilt es dann zu klären.

Das möchte ich eigentlich sehr bald Anfang 2009 in Angriff nehmen. Das ist geplant für Indigo:inc.

Außerdem habe ich ein neues Projekt mit einer Kollegin, irradiation, aus Wien, wir haben ein Live-Projekt, das uns beiden sehr, sehr viel Spaß macht. Wir haben beide daran gedacht, ein Album zusammen zu produzieren. Es kann dann auch gut sein, dass das auf indigo:inc rauskommen wird. Aber auch das ist noch nicht wirklich spruchreif.

Mit female:pressure möchten wir auf jeden Fall auch ein weiteres Projekt machen, auch in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Stadtimpuls Wien. Die sind sehr interessiert. Wir haben letztes Jahr darüber gesprochen, nach der DVD würden wir gerne eine Blu-ray Disc herausbringen, weil man da quasi noch mehr und weniger komprimierte Daten in besserer Qualität draufpacken und einfach noch ganz andere Funktionen bedienen kann. Das würden wir gerne machen, eventuell im Zusammenhang mit einem Mini-Festival an drei verschiedenen Orten, sagen wir mal Los Angeles, Tokio, Berlin, und Wien natürlich auch noch; sonst wäre es ja nicht so schön für den Verein Stadtimpuls Wien. Also, das würden wir gerne machen, aber ob das konkret funktioniert, ist noch nicht raus. Es waren auch gerade Neuwahlen der Regierung in Österreich und davon ist das wahrscheinlich nicht ganz unabhängig, weil es ein politischer Verein ist.

Ganz konkret kann ich das eben alles noch nicht sagen, aber wir wollen auf jeden Fall gerne wieder etwas machen.

Aber es ist eigentlich auch ganz angenehm, wenn man zwei Jahre zwischen den Releases hat, was die female:pressure Sachen beispielsweise anbelangt. Denn das ist ein irrsinnig zeitintensiver Arbeitsaufwand über einige Monate. Da ist es dann ganz angenehm, wenn ich die Zeit habe, mich auch wieder um meine eigene Musik zu kümmern. Denn wenn ich jetzt ein female:pressure Projekt hätte, dann hätte ich keine Zeit, Liveacts vorzubereiten. Das schließt einander aus. Insofern ist es gut, wenn das abwechselnd läuft.

Noch eine abschließende Frage: Was sind DIE Detroit Klassiker, auf die man in seiner Vinyl-Sammlung einfach nicht verzichten kann? Wenn Du magst, nenn doch bitte auszugsweise fünf Beispiele.

You started Dj-ing in 1989, first with Jazz and Funk or even Hip Hop Sets. How and when did u come to Techno?

Actually through a few key - records. And first of all was DJ Rush. A record put out by Saber Records - the label is probably long forgotten, a stepping stone of the Chicago labels. Next was Underground Resistance. And then came a time, actually in 1991, when I got to know the German Techno Scene from Berlin through Dj Hell and Hardwax.

This was the main thing for me, the store and the scene in Germany - and how things where evolving in DJ-ing. It‘s then when I said to myself: that‘s something I would like to do.

How did you experience, this start and evolution of the techno and house era since the beginning of the 90‘s in Berlin?

First I have to say that, when I arrived in Berlin in 1993, and already had my first gigs in Germany, well I had a guilty conscience, that I came too late to Techno. Because the ones which were then in the business where like: „What, You come only now to it?“ (laughs). I was there a shy newcomer.

But what was great about Berlin, was the big amount of free room. And you can take this literally. It came from the fact that after the big turnabout the land tenure was not really cleared and the people just entered the empty buildings and organized parties.

Absolutely representative for me in 90’s Berlin were, surely, Friseur and Electro - and of course the big clubs like Tresor and Planet or E-Werk. But these small, somehow freaky organized clubs, have reflected more clearly the creative potential of this city.

There are a lot of people from this scene with which I am still in touch, for instance, from Friseur came half of the De:Bug crew. On the other side I was totally busy learning and working. I was absorbing all the information and totally devoting myself to it. Insofar I was not so socially attached to the city. That is why, I can tell you more about the Dj-Praxis and Hardwax, than about the scene in Berlin.

What about Hardwax?

Hardwax was somehow a very important cross point for Techno, Electro and House. It is actually a beautiful example of the way networks were created before the time of the internet.

People would just meet in a store. It was a physical space where people were meeting and information was exchanged.

It had of course also a lot to do with some clubs, like TRESOR, which strengthened through their label the links to Detroit. But there was Marc Ernestos, probably one of the first who went from Berlin to Chicago and Detroit, and really met all the people there and brought back records. There is a difference between the way records were shared five years ago and today. The Infrastructure was less developed.

Today we have other problems with the record shops and the physical sound carriers.

Anyway, in Hardwax there were a lot of rare and wanted records which you could not find in other record shops or arrived way later in the stores of Munich or Vienna. It was a kind of a paradise for me as a DJ to work in there.

1996 your returned to Vienna. Was at that time the end of an era for you, or did u had some particular plans to be developed in Vienna?

I actually had private reasons. The point was, I left Vienna quite precipitous - so I let there some unsolved business - and then in Berlin, as I said, it was mostly work and somehow not so much social embedding. I started to miss it at a point. And curiously, right after I took the decision to return to Vienna, the perspectives started to enlarge. Then I started to meet people just in private. My view opened. So for three years I had been focused only on the music and on the mixing. With the decision to return to Vienna, things started to get back to normal.

Did you also produce during the time you were in Berlin?

Yes, again and again but every time in other people‘s studios.

My first record came out in 1993, i think. It was a number I did with Richard Bartz in Munich. Munich too was a kind of an anchor for me. And after with Pulsinger un Tunakan, two Viennese artists. It came out at the same time on a New Yorker label.

Apart from the fact that you mixed in the appropriate clubs of Europe, America and Asia, in 2002 you were part of the line-up of the Detroit Electronic Music Festival. What was the feeling to play in the city of Techno-Sounds?

I was pleased, of course. I think it was the second or the third Detroit Electronic Music Fest they did. The first one was organized by Carl Craig, but they had some internal

difficulties. Carl Craig didn‘t join in when I played. I am not sure if it was the second or the third edition. When I got this booking, I already knew it was less cool than when Carl was organizing it, but still it made me feel very happy and honored.

But it was not the first time I had been to Detroit. Detroit was just so important to me that I flew there from time to time to visit people there. It was easy to do this because Marc from Hardwax knew them too, especially the people from Underground Resistance.

of others there, but still bound to a very typical Style. I could identify the girls, as regular guests of Le Pulp on the streets of Paris without even knowing them (laughs).

The funny thing about Le Pulp was that the place was actually an old restaurant with dancing. And still an active one. This means that around five o‘clock in the afternoon, at tea time, one day of the week, i don‘t remember how it was in weekends, older people had their partner dance session. And after, a shield on which it was written Le Pulp was hanged outside and the pure lesbian or lesbian dominated business began.

Is this Detroit-Experience the moment which defined the style of your work?

Yes, you could follow a thin red line. This melancholic, dark Funkiness, which is typical for Detroit but also the Track Stories of Chicago, the more beat-oriented stuff - yes sure.

But at a point it all somehow got dissolved. The reason was that a lot of DJ‘s which were influencing and forming the sound, left Detroit. The whole American scene was seriously affected in the past eight years. At least, the big distributor Watts got broke already a long time ago.

In addition was the fact they always complained about, that they don‘t have Airplay and so no real survival chances for the musicians. Some even went to Europe, and that made the exchange more intensely. This Detroit - Theme or the Detroit - Color is today in a lot of productions. A typical example which comes into my mind right now is Fabrice Lig - he is Belgian - he does extremely Detroit-sounding tracks, and of course, doesn‘t come from Detroit, but he‘s really good at it (laughs).

You were booked often there?

Yes, always. Jennifer Cardini is a very good friend of mine and Fany (Le Pulp promoter), which I know trough Jennifer, became a friend too. At a point I was so often there that people started to think I live in Paris.

You played some sets in Le Pulp in Paris? When was it and how was the atmosphere there? It is still very famous for the electronic Ladies Parties they had at that time.

There were different evenings. If I remember well, the Thursdays were lesbian-only. Then there was Friday which was not that exclusive but, still there were lots of lesbians in the audience. Well the lesbian electronic scene is very strong in Paris. And it‘s quite clear from what i know from friends and colleagues, you always see the same faces and everybody knows everybody. This was always very funny. So, one time, i totally remember, I was very confused because while I was mixing I saw only guys. So I thought: what‘s going on here?

It‘s true it was around the end of Le Pulp. It was a cool alternative scene in Paris, not so hype-overcharged like lots

I‘ll get once again back to Vienna and to your work as label owner and networker. In 1998 you created Indigo:inc and at the same time the network female:pressure. What was your intention with female:pressure? This internet-platform is so far unique, isn‘t it?

No, there are links to other networks on the website of female:pressure. They came up later. There are some but female:pressure has some skills which distinguish it from the others.

I didn‘t become a DJ with a gender issue on my mind. I just started to play records. I always had comments from the audience and other people, like: „That is crazy! You do this as a woman, it‘s incredible, how is it?“ Or really insulting: “You have a rather good sense of rhythm for a woman“ or something as stupid: „it‘s incredible you do this as a woman. There is hardly somebody.“ And the next thing was an example of a really famous woman dj. And my answer was always a rudimentary enumeration of mates, but then again I would continue: “Yes, it‘s true, there is more guys than girls, BUT there is also...“ And then I started to enumerate others.

And most of the time, the reaction was like: „Yes, you are right, exactly“.

Or there were festivals or conferences where I was the only woman invited and I had the opportunity to ask the organizers why. And the answer was like: „Kelly Hand was busy“ or “Monika Kruse was already booked“. So there were always the same names which were used. There was always only one or maybe two names which were crossing people‘s minds. And at

a point I thought, this is going too far. We should systematize this.

I kind of started alone by making a list of mates and by collecting their contacts. This was before internet was so useful like today. And it was also tougher than today.

Then I tried to do a databank and thought about how to put it online. At the very start it was a HTML- list and there were some certain adversities, until 2001 when I met Andrea Mayrshe was introduced to me. Actually I would have liked to have built it from the start on the Open-Source base, because I think that the Open Source idea serves female: pressure totally. And I would have liked to have an Open Source databank - I can‘t do it by myself - it would be best if it could be programmed by a woman. This was not very easy. But at a point it was absolutely necessary because one of the servers was not working anymore and there were external problems which forced this. Since then there is this incredible stable working databank with it‘s own domain, programmed by Andrea Mayr.

This was actually a next step which was closer to the idea that you could browse the website too. This was not possible before because there was only a HTML- List. This was disturbing me every time, but it changed (laughs).

Where is female:pressure today compared to then?

One was the technical aspect. It‘s sure that there is nothing exotic anymore in Germany or Austria to see a girl at turntables.

It‘s different when it comes to production. It‘s more exotic to appreciate this comparing to the Status Quo of the DJs, ten years ago. The number grew and this web extended obviously.

Unfortunatley, this is not obsolete yet. The goal is, of course, to arrive at the point where a platform like this one gets to be useless, because it‘s totally irrelevant what gender a DJ has or what else is in between. We are on this way. I can imagine there is a lot that can be done in the community-technical and technically put some projects on track. The first step in this direction is the open:sounds project, so women can exchange their musical productions. I find this a good thing but there is no clear action plan for it. It depends also how things get to be financed.

Basically it‘s my hobby. Only certain projects in Vienna were supported by Stadtimpuls Wien: the first open:sounds CD and the DVD for the 10th anniversary. And when you get this kind of support, then of course you can afford to continue to develop. Otherwise it‘s my private time and my private budget, which contributes to make this thing work, update and add

new members (laughs).

How did u built the line-up for the open:sounds CD? Did you ask the participants or did they express their wish to be part of this project?

Basically it‘s like this: the open:sounds music production platform can be used by female:pressure members and exclusively by female:pressure members because you need to Login to access. For the CD project and also for the DVD there was a concrete call: „Hey, we have a project. Use open:sounds and put your music online.“ Everybody was invited to participate. Only the compilation, on CD or DVD, I selected it by myself. All tracks are streamed on the site and there is no other choice. This is available for everybody who put something online.

Even if we talked about it before, I will ask explicit again; do you have in plan a future project in the context of indigo:inc or female:pressure?

Yes, the thing with indigo:inc (my label) is that it‘s kind of asleep for three years and I really want to release at least a new Maxi of me in the next year. Unfortunately this is not ripe for decision yet. Lately I have worked a lot more intensive at live acts and I play quite a lot live so there is of course some material. Some of it was already produced but the biggest part, not yet. I would like to release it. But I have no distribution and there is a financial issue too. This is what needs to be solved. This is what I want to start, very soon in the beginning of 2009. This is planned for indigo:inc.

Apart from this, I have a project with a friend, irradiation from Vienna, we have a live project, we both enjoy to do.

We thought about producing an album together. This can be good because it would be released on indigo:inc. But this is not ripe for decision neither. We want to do another project, collaborating again with Stadtimpuls Wien. They are very interested. We talked about this last year, after the DVD we would like to release a Blu-ray Disc because this gives the possibility to compress less and achieve a better quality, plus there are some other extra functions.

This is what we would like to do, eventually correlated with a mini-festival in three different places, let‘s say Los Angeles, Tokyo, Berlin and of course Vienna; if not it wouldn‘t be very nice for the organization Stadtimpuls Wien. So this is what we would like to do, but if it will really work out is still

unknown. There were elections for the government of Austria and this can affect somehow, as Stadtimpuls Wien is a political organization. I can‘t say very concrete things but we want to do something again, anyway. But at the same time it is very comfortable to have two years between the releases, for example of the female:pressure releases. Because it‘s an insane time - intensive effort of months. And then it‘s very comfortable when I have time to focus on my own music as well. Because if I had a female:pressure project right now, I wouldn’t have the time to prepare my live acts. These things exclude each other. Until now it‘s good it happens alternately.

Wo kommst du her?

Ich wurde in Cannes geboren, am 13 Juli 1974. Die Nabelschnur war um meinen Hals gewickelt… Autsch! 19 Jahre habe ich in Cannes gelebt. Danach bin ich nach Toulon, Marseille und schließlich nach Aix-en-provence gegangen, wo ich derzeit noch lebe.

Wann und von wem bekamst du deine erste Kamera?

Ich war 19. Auf einer Straße in Cannes entdeckte einer meiner Freunde eine liegen gelassene schwarze Tasche am Straßenrand. Es regnete sehr stark und außer uns war niemand da. Also machte ich die Tasche auf und darin war eine brandneue Kamera (24/36 Yashica). Sogar 2 weitere Objektive und Wattestäbchen zum Reinigen waren dabei!

Manchmal glaube ich an Zeichen und das war offensichtlich eins! Ich habe mich so sehr gefreut, besonders weil ich nie das Geld gehabt hätte, mir so eine Kamera zu kaufen.

Hast du Fotografie gelernt?

Ich habe schon immer alles geliebt, was mit Ausdruck und Kreation zu tun hat und nach einem naturwissenschaftlich geprägten Abitur wollte ich unbedingt zur École des BeauxArts in Nizza oder Toulon gehen. Ich hab die Aufnahmeprüfung erfolgreich absolviert und konnte mich zwischen den beiden Städten entscheiden. Meine Wahl fiel auf Toulon, da ich so mein Elternhaus verlassen konnte.

Zu dieser Zeit meines Lebens habe ich viel herumprobiert.

Während des ersten und zweiten Jahres meines Studiums habe ich viele interessante neue Kunstformen für mich entdeckt und habe zum Beispiel einige Installationen gemacht. Aber Fotografie und Video haben sich schnell zu meinen bevorzugten Medien entwickelt.

Mir ist es wichtig zu betonen, dass ich nicht nur Fotografin bin, sondern vielmehr bildende Künstlerin. Nach Toulon war

ich noch 3 Jahre an der Beaux-Arts in Marseille, wo ich dann meine Kunst-Ausbildung abgeschlossen habe.

Wer oder Was ist deine größte Inspiration?

Die Malerei ist eine große Inspiration für mich. Sie ist eine so bedeutende Kunstform. Vor kurzem habe ich auf einer Ausstellung am Modern Art Museum in Paris einen Maler namens Peter Doig entdeckt. Seine Arbeiten sind einfach unglaublich!

Filmkunst beeinflusst mich ebenfalls und ist oft der Ursprung meiner Arbeiten.

Film und Fernsehen faszinieren mich. Ich erforsche die Bilder, nehme jedes einzelne in mich auf und übersetze den Inhalt frei in meine eigene Bedeutung.

Was treibt dich zu so „dreckigem Realismus”?

Wenn ich vor meinem Fernseher sitze, ganz allein im dunklen, verschwindet alles und nichts existiert mehr!

Meine eigene Realität baut sich vor dem Fernseh-Bildschirm zusammen und ich kann mit der Zeit spielen. Ich lasse die Bilder langsamer laufen und wenn ich endlich das perfekte Bild finde, stelle ich den Film auf Pause und fange es mit einem Polaroid ein.

Wenn das Bild dann auf dem Polaroid erscheint ist das nicht nur eine einzigartige Momentaufnahme sondern eine reale, greifbare Erfahrung für mich.

Glaubst du, dass Kunst die Realität verändern kann, sodass sie zu einem einheitlichen Gebilde wird, das übermächtig ist und Menschen aller Kulturen, Klassen und Geschlechter zugleich berühren kann?

Ich glaube nicht, dass Kunst die Realität verwandelt. Aber sie gibt uns die Möglichkeit, die Welt um uns herum auf eine neue Weise zu erforschen und sie anders wahrzunehmen.

Wie durch einen Filter.

Ich denke, dass Kunst alles andere übertrifft. Leider jedoch ist sie immer noch dicht verknüpft mit einer elitären Gesellschaftsschicht. Eher durchschnittliche Menschen

haben keinen einfachen Zugang zu Kunst und Kultur. Sie ist zu teuer und es gibt zu wenige staatliche Institutionen, die Kunst lehren. Das spiegelt zumindest meine Erfahrungen in Frankreich wieder. Es ist eine Schande, denn für mich ist Kunst ein Muss, ein tiefes Bedürfnis.

Gilles Deleuze hat gesagt: “Kreation ist ein Akt des Widerstandes” und ich finde diese Aussage ist grundrichtig.

Ich persönlich finde Elemente von Terry Richardson, Nan Goldin und Dash Snow in deinen Arbeiten wieder. Ist für Dich die amerikanische Sichtweise in der Fotografie interessanter als die europäische?

Ich mag Nan Goldin und Dash Snow sehr. Aber Terry Richardson ist mir ein bisschen zu sehr porno fashion chic.

Ich will sein Talent nicht in Frage stellen, aber dieser Stil berührt mich einfach nicht so sehr.

Ich mag einige amerikanische Fotografen, wie Mark Morrisroe, Larry Clarck und natürlich Diane Arbus. Für mich sind sie absolute Ausnahmekünstler mit einer unglaublichen Sensibilität.

Ich mag aber auch japanische und Nordeuropäische Fotokünstler, wie zum Beispiel JH Engström, der mich sehr bewegt und berührt.

Welt und seiner kunstvoll, poetischen Symbolik, seiner Liebe zu den unterschiedlichsten Typen von Menschen (diese magischen Kreaturen) und natürlich wegen der bewegenden Schönheit seiner Bilder.

Was ist deine Lieblingsfarbe und warum?

Das hängt von meiner Stimmung ab. Aber es gibt eine Farbe die ich hasse und das ist „Barbie“ Pink. Die macht mich wahnsinnig! …Ah! Was ist dein absoluter Lieblingsfilm und erkläre bitte warum?

“La Jetée” von Chris Marker (Deutscher Titel: «Am Rande des Rollfelds»). Dieser Film ist zugleich verstörend und poetisch.

Er hat eine einzigartige Sichtweise, die mich anspricht und berührt. So wie Marker mit dem Licht spielt, schafft er es, eine ergreifende Schönheit auf seinen Bilder wiederzugeben.

In “La Jetée” stellt er die philosophische Frage nach dem Außerkraftsetzen der Macht der Bilder, indem er zum Beispiel die Ausdruckskraft eines Gesichts nutzt. Allein diese Themen machen den Film zu meinem absoluten Lieblingsfilm.

Wie ist es für dich als weiblicher Fotokünstler in einer Welt, die in der Geschichte immer von Männern dominiert wurde? Oder siehst du in letzter zeit einen Wandel stattfinden?

Alles ist in einem ständigen Wandel. Ich finde tatsächlich, dass Frauen in der heutigen Kunstwelt eine sehr wichtige Rolle spielen.

Zum Beispiel hat Nan Goldin 2007 den Hasselblad gewonnen, einen der bedeutendsten Fotografie-Preise.

Ich persönlich habe die Hoffnung als Künstlerin und als Person gleichberechtigt zu sein.

Allerdings hängt Gleichberechtigung für Frauen davon ab, in welches Land sie hinein geboren werden. Wie wir alle wissen, haben auch in der heutigen Zeit noch viele Frauen nicht das Recht sich auszudrücken.

Wenn du für einen Tag jemand anderes sein könntest (lebend oder tot), wer würdest du gerne sein?

Why Photography?

It’s the best way for me to express my feelings.

Where are you from?

I was born in Cannes, July 13th 1974. I was born with the umbilical cord around my neck.. Ouch!

I lived 19 years in Cannes and then I moved to Toulon, after that to Marseille, and then finally I ended up in Aixen-Provence, which is in the South of France where I live presently.

Who bought you your first camera and when?

When I was 19, on a street in Cannes, which is located in the South of France, there was a heavy rain down pour that day. One of my friends noticed an abandoned black bag on the side of the street. There was no one around us. So, I opened the bag, and discovered a brand new camera (24/36 Yashica), there were two lenses and still the materials to clean it! Sometimes, I believe in signs and obviously this was one! I was so happy, especially because, I didn’t have that kind of money to buy a camera for myself.

Did you go to school for photography?

I have always loved creation in general, and after scientific studies, I was really interested to go to the “Beaux-Arts” (Art school). After my baccaulauréat (the exam before going to University), I passed the exam and had the choice to either go to the “Beaux-Arts” in Nice or the one in Toulon. I chose the one in Toulon in order to leave the home of my parents.

At that time in my life, I was experimenting a lot during my first and second year of studies, I was realizing a lot of new and interesting forms of art, like installations, for example.

But, quickly chose photography and video for my mediums of predilection.

I would like to state, that I am not just a photographer, but rather, a plastic artist. After, Toulon, I spent three years at Les Beaux-Arts in Marseille which is where I completed my Art education.

Who or what is your biggest inspiration?

Painting is a big inspiration to me because it’s an important form of art. Recently, I’ve discovered a painter named Peter Doig in an exhibition at the Modern Art Museum of Paris. It’s absolutely amazing and very inspirational!

painting, video, sculpture etc). It’s often the genesis of my work.

Cinematic images are fascinating to me, I explore them, translate them in total freedom consuming, every image and translating its content into a special meaning.

What provokes you to create such “dirty realism?”

When I am sitting in front of my television, all alone in the dark, everything disappears, and nothing exists! My own reality unites in front of that televison screen. When this occurs, I play with time in my mind. I slow down the visual sequences and when I finally find the perfect image, I put the film in “pause mode,” and then I capture my Polaroid image.

The appearance of the Polaroid image is not only a unique moment in time, but a real experience, tanglible experience for me.

Do you believe that art can transform reality and become its own entity which is all powerful and can touch people from all cultures, classes and sexes?

I think art does not transform reality. But, it is a way to explore and feel differently in the world that surrounds us. It is also a filter which then can form it’s own creation.

Thus, I think art can transcend emotions. Unfortunately, art is still identified for an elitist population. Therefore, the average person does not have access as easily to culture and art. There are reasons for this: it’s too expensive, and not enough public education is devoted to teaching the Arts.

This is coming from my own French personal experience.

Consequently, it’s really a shame. But for me, creation is a need, a necessity.

In the words of Gilles Deleuze, “creation is an act of resistance.” And I think this statement is profoundly true.

Personally, I see elements of Terry Richardson, Nan Goldin and dash snow in your work. Does the American point of view in photography interest you more than the European photographers?

I like Nan Goldin and Dash Snow a lot. However, Terry Richardson is a little too much, „porn fashion chic,“ for me. But, I do not contest his qualities. However, I‘m less sensitive to that register.

I like certains American photographers, like Mark Morrisroe, Larry Clarck, and obviously, Diane Arbus. To me, these artists

are considered marginal photographers with an incredible sensitivity. I also like Japanese and Northern European photographers, like JH Engström, which moves me and touches me a lot.

How does it feel to be a woman photographer in an art world historically dominated by men? Or, do you find this changing?

I think women have an important role in art, actually. Things are changing and progressing all the time.

For example, In 2007, Nan Goldin won the Prize Hasselblad, which is one of the biggest photography awards.

I have aspiration for equality and to exist as a female artist.

However, equality for women depends on the country in which they are born in. As we all know in this present world, women do not have any right of expressions in certain places.

If you could be anyone for one day (living or not) who would that be and why?

Fedérico Fellini: for his enchanted vision of the world and his artful poetic imagery. He also had a strong love for different types of people, including magical creatures. And, finally, for the love of his own imagination, which ultimately, enabled him to create such unique and moving Cinema.

What is your favorite color and why?

It‘s depending on my mood. But there is only one thing I just hate and that is „Barbie“ pink. It makes me nervous! AH! What is your favorite movie of all time and please explain why? „The Jetty“ by Chris Marker. This movie is important to me because of it‘s ability to be strange and poetic at the same time. It has a singular vision which speaks to me deeply.

The reflection of light that he uses upon his images reflects profound beauty. In „The Jetty,“ he poses the philosophical question of defacing the power of images, just using the strength of a face for example, and those themes alone makes this film my all time favorite.

Alles begann damals mit meiner Neon pinken Formel 1 kompakt Kamera… Seit dem liebe ich die Fotografie.

Zwischendurch studierte ich noch an der Fh Dortmund Fotodesign, absolvierte diverse Praktika und Assistenzen bei Namenhaften Fotografen/ Künstlern in Deutschland und im Ausland.

An was arbeitest Du momentan?

Diverse freie Projekte, eins beschäftigt sich mit Jugend Kultur.

Hast Du konkrete zukünftige Pläne?

Mein eigenes Portfolio zu erweitern sowie meine freien Projekte voran zu bringen.

Welche Art der Photographie (formal und thematisch) interssiert Dich besonders?

Ich bevorzuge eine sehr nüchterne, sachliche und „cleane“ Fotografie. Architektur und Still Life sind meine favs!

What are you working on at the moment?

Different Projects, on of them is about youth culture.

When did you start taking pictures and how did you become a professional photographer?

Photography for me was born when i got my first camera, a neon Formel 1 compact Camera. Since then I am in love with Photography. During that time I studied Photography at the University of Applied Sciences in Dortmund. I worked for different Artists and Photographers as a Photo assistant and made a few interns in Germany and abroad.

Do you have concrete future projects?

To complete my Portfolio and work on my further Art Projects.

What kind of photography (formally as well as themes) are you into?

I prefer a realistic and factual Photography. Architecture and Still Life are my favourites!

Photography Anna Malmberg - Swedish Visualistic Fairy Tales Text & Translation: Julia Große-Heitmeyer

Woher kommst Du? Ich bin in Mellangård außerhalb von Sundsvall in Schweden aufgewachsen. Mit 18 Jahren bin ich dann nach Stockholm gezogen, wo ich noch immer lebe.

Wann hast Du angefangen zu photographieren und wann wurdest Du Photographin?

Mein Vater hat schon als Lehrer für Kunst und Photographie gearbeitet, und eines Tages, als ich 14 Jahre alt war, richtete er eine Dunkelkammer in unserem Waschraum ein. Ich habe meinen jüngeren Schwestern und mir alte Kleidung angezogen und den Zauber entdeckt, Bilder zu komponieren.

Ich habe während meiner Schulzeit fast in der Dunkelkammer gelebt. Nach meinem 18. Lebensjahr habe ich einige Jahre Photographie studiert. Ich habe auch als photographische Assistenz mit dem weltberühmten Photographen Lennart Nilsson zusammengearbeitet.

Mit welcher Art der Photographie - formal und thematisch - beschäftigst Du Dich?

Künstlerische Photographie mit einem Hang zum Surrealismus und zur Romantik hat immer mein Herz berührt.

Was inspiriert Dich, betreffend die Photographie und das Aufnehmen von Bildern?

Verlassene Häuser, alte Kleidung und unheimliche Filme inspirieren mich sehr. Für mich ist der Ort sehr wichtig.

Eine zerstörte Mauer zum Beispiel, bewegt mich dazu, ein Bild aus einer Mischung aus Träumen und der Realität zu kreieren. Ich bin immer eine Träumerin gewesen, und mit der Photographie ist es mir möglich, das Irreale Wirklichkeit werden zu lassen.

Irgendwelche Einflüsse von anderen Photographen?

Ich liebe die Photographen Francesca Woodman, Tim Walker, Floria Sigismondi, Eugenio Recuenco, Sally Mann, Deborah Turbeville und Sarah Moon.

Ausstellungen, die Du gehabt hast und/ oder die Du planst?

Seit Frühling 2008 arbeite ich mit der Stylistin Ida Persson zusammen, und wir arbeiten nun als Team unter dem Namen Nangilima Photographie. Wir sind wie Schwestern und sehen die Welt mit den gleichen Augen. Wir hatten im Vintage-Laden Beyond Retro in Stockholm eine Ausstellung von September bis Mitte Dezember 2008. Zu Beginn 2009 werden wir eine Ausstellung in einer Photogalerie in Södermalm in Stockholm haben.

Sind Arbeiten von Dir auch in Kunstbüchern oder anderen Magazinen veröffentlicht worden?

Ich hatte einige meiner Bilder in der französischen Zeitung Le Dauphiné Libéré und in dem Online-Magazin Noovo Magazine. Einige Magazine sind interessiert daran, unsere Arbeit zu publizieren. Eines dieser Magazine ist The Photography Link.

Was außer Photographie interessiert Dich noch?

Ich bin immer ein kreativer Mensch gewesen. Ich bin in einer künstlerisch ambitionierten Familie aufgewachsen. Daher ist kreatives Arbeiten etwas Natürliches für mich. Ohne kann ich gar nicht leben. Wenn ich nicht photographisch arbeite, dann arbeite ich an etwas anderem, wie Kleidung. Dinge, die ich neben der Photographie liebe, sind Musik, Flohmärkte, französische und italienische Filme, alte Häuser, alte Kleidung und Autos aus den 50er Jahren.

Hast Du konkrete Zukunftspläne?

Ida und ich haben viele Ideen und Träume für die Zukunft.

Und viele Dinge passieren auch gerade jetzt. Wir hatten ein Treffen mit Max Wang, der unter anderem für die Vogue Taiwan schreibt. Das Treffen hat unsere Erwartungen übertroffen! Er mochte, was wir machen und will uns nun in Taiwan vermarkten. Er arbeitet viel, um schwedisches Design in Taiwan zu vermarkten. Max wird über uns in der Vogue

Taiwan schreiben. Es gibt im Mai eine große Ausstellung für junges Design. Dafür suchen wir momentan Sponsoren und Förderung, so dass wir daran teilnehmen können. Dieses Projekt wird zunehmend größer und viele schwedische Designer wollen mit uns kooperieren. Wir werden die Design-Produkte in unseren Bildern darstellen und in den Installationen verwenden. So haben die Designer die Möglichkeit sich in Taiwan zu vermarkten. Die Bilder werden obdachlose Kinder zum Thema haben. Aber wir werden es auf unsere Art mit einem Gefühl von Märchen darstellen.

Wir werden Hilfsorganisationen sowohl in Taiwan als auch in Schweden für eine Zusammenarbeit kontaktieren.

Und dann planen wir für die nächste Ausstellung. In Zukunft wollen wir reisen und faszinierende Orte finden, an denen wir unsere imaginäre Welt erschaffen können. Wir wollen PhotoAufnahmen für Magazine in der ganzen Welt machen und Ausstellungen und Bücher produzieren.

Where are you from?

I grew up in Mellangård outside Sundsvall in Sweden and when I was 18 I moved to Stockholm where I still live.

When did you start taking pictures and becoming a photographer?

My dad worked as an art & photography teacher and one day when I was 14 he built a darkroom in the washing room. I dressed my younger sisters and myself up with old cloths and I discovered the magic to create pictures. I almost lived in the darkroom during the school time. Then when I turned 18 I studied photography a couple of years and also worked as a photo assistant with the world famous photographer Lennart Nilsson.

What kind of photography (formally as well as themes) are you into?

Art photography has always been close to my heart, with a touch of surrealism and romance.

Dies ist erst der Anfang What inspires you regarding photography and taking pictures?

Abandoned houses, old clothes and scary movies inspire me a lot. For me the location is very important, a destroyed wall for example makes my imagination create a picture with a mix of dreams and reality. I have always been a dreamer and with photography I have the possibility to make the unreal become real.

Any influences by other photographers I love the photographers Francesca Woodman, Tim Walker, Floria Sigismondi, Eugenio Recuenco, Sally Mann, Deborah Turbeville and Sarha Moon.

Exhibitions you have had and/or plan?

Since the spring 2008 I have worked with the stylist Ida Persson and we are now working as a team under the name Nangilima photography. We are like sisters and see the world in the same way. We have an exhibition since September to the middle of December 2008 at the vintage shop Beyond Retro in Stockholm. In the beginning of 2009 we are going to have an exhibition in a photo gallery at Södermalm in Stockholm.

Are there any publications of your work in art books, or other magazines?

I have had some of my pictures in the French newspaper „Le Dauphiné Libéré“ and in the web magazine „Noovo Magazine“. Some magazines are interested to publishing our work, one of them is “The Photography Link”.

What else than photography is of interest to you?

I have always been a creative person. I grew up in an arty family. So creating is something very natural for me. I can‘t live without it. When I‘m not working with photos I create something else (clothes in stuff...) Things that I love apart from photography is music, flea markets, French & Italian movies, old houses, vintage cloths and 50s cars.

Do you have concrete future projects?

Me and Ida have lots of ideas and dreams about the future.

And lots of things happen right now. We had the meeting with Max Wang last Friday who is a writer for Vogue Taiwan among others.

It was over expectation!

He really liked what we do and now he wants to market us in Taiwan. He works a lot to market Swedish design in Taiwan.

Max will write about us in his column for Vogue.

There is a big exhibition for young design in there in May that we now searching scholarship and sponsors for so we can contribute. This project becomes bigger & bigger and lots of Swedish designers want to co-operate with us.

We should then use different designer products in our pictures and than also use them in the installation. And they have then the possibility to market themselves in Taiwan. The theme of the pictures will be about homeless children but we are going to make it our way with a more fairytale feeling.

We will contact help organisations in both Taiwan and Sweden for a co-operation And then we plan for the next exhibition.

In the future we want to travel and find amazing locations where we can create our imaginary world. We want to make photo shoots for magazines all over the world and do exhibitions and books.

Photography Finn Buchwald „Love Rock Revolution Girl Style Now“ Text & Translation: Julia Große-Heitmeyer

Wenn die feministische Untergrund Punkbewegung der Riot Grrls in ihrer Entstehungsgeschichte bald zwei Jahrzehnte zurück liegt, Finn zeigt mit ihrer Photographie, dass diese Subkultur in Berlin noch immer fortlebt und das Bild eines manchen Kiezes der Stadt mitprägt.

Portraits von Frauen-Bands, queeren PerformanceKünstlerInnen, SkaterInnen oder BMX-erInnen beispielsweise bilden das farbenfrohe oder auch schwarz-weiße Repertoire Finns photographischen Schaffens.

Das besondere Selbstverständnis der Portraitierten, steht ihnen in Finns Photographien ausdrucksstark ins Gesicht geschrieben.

Finn Buchwald geht es in ihren Bildern darum, die Standardsichtweisen einer maßgeblich heterosexuell geprägten Gesellschaft auf das Gender-Thema aufzubrechen.

Finns Bilder sind authentisch, nicht zuletzt deshalb, weil die Photographin einen unprätentiösen und dabei gestochen scharfen Blick auf ihre Motive wirft. Die Authentizität resultiert aber auch daraus, dass Finn sich selbst in dem von ihr portraitierten Umfeld bewegt. Die meisten der von ihr Photographierten stammen aus Finns Freundes- und Bekanntenkreis.

Photographien von Finn Buchwald waren auch als Einzeloder in Gruppenausstellungen zu sehen; zum Beispiel die Einzelausstellung Heavenly Creatures , für die sie junge lesbische Frauen, Drag-Kings und Drag-Queens hauptsächlich in Berlin photographiert hat. Heavenly Creatures wurde 2006 und 2007 in Berlin, Bonn, Kopenhagen und Rom gezeigt. Im Sommer 2008 war Finn mit Arbeiten an der Gruppenausstellung Rotes Haus im Künstlerhaus Bethanien beteiligt und hat im selben Jahr Photographien unter dem Titel A Night Out - A Day Of Action in der Wagenburg Lohmühle gezeigt.

Die aktuelle Ausstellung ist momentan mit unterschiedlichen Schwarzweiß- und Farbphotographien unter dem Titel MANN

Finissage ist am Donnerstag, den 02. April um 20:00 Uhr. „Love Rock Revolution Girl Style Now“ or the Riot Grrl perspective in photography Though the feministic underground Riot Grrl movement goes back to the 80ies, Finn’s photography shows that this subculture is still alive in Berlin and part of some of its districts’ image.

Finn’s repertoire of full colour as well as black and white photography contains portraits of womens’ bands, queer performance artists, skaters or bmxers for example. The specific self-image of the portrayed is shown expressively in their faces by how Finn takes the photos. Finn Buchwald’s aim is to break up with the heterosexual masses’ standard view on the gender topic.

Finn’s pictures are authentic not least because the photographer’s view on her subjects is unpretentious and simultaneously pin sharp. The authenticity also results from Finn’s milieu she lives in: Most of the portrayed are friends.

The photos by Finn Buchwald have been shown in solo as well as group exhibitions as for example the solo exhibiton Heavenly Creatures. For this one she took pictures of young lesbian women, drag kings, and drag queens in Berlin mainly. Heavenly Creatures has been shown in Berlin, Bonn, Copenhagen, and Rome. In summer of 2008 Finn took part at the group exhibition Rotes Haus (Red House) at Künstlerhaus Bethanien in Berlin. Also in 2008 she had photos shown at Wagenburg Lohmühle. Title has been A Night Out - A Day Of Action.

Her current exhibition which is called MANNequins contains black and white as well as full colour pictures. It can be seen at Barbie Deinhoff’s.

Jennifer, du hast U:D bis jetzt so viele tolle Künstler empfohlen. Was ist dein eigener/persönlicher künstlerischer Hintergrund und wo kommst du her?

Vorab möchte ich erst einmal sagen, dass ich wirklich an das Konzept von U:D glaube. Ich habe viele Freunde, die super talentierte Künstler sind und als ich dann selbst angesprochen wurde, tauchte ich direkt ein. Ich bin eine sehr visuelle Person und würde fast alles tun, um die Künste zu unterstützen – insbesondere alternative und neue Konzepte.

Ich unterstütze aufstrebende Künstler, inklusive mir selbst und liebe es, Minderheiten aller Art zu helfen, sich für Kunst zu begeistern, seien sie nun queer, transitioning, Frauen, Aliens, etc.

Also, ich wurde als Einzelkind von zwei verrückten HippieKünstlern in Miami, Florida geboren. Ich lebte für die ersten drei Jahre meines Lebens in einer Künstler-Kommune. Mein Vater war Musiker und Maler und meine Mutter war mehr oder weniger in Kunst und Handwerk involviert. Kunst und Handwerk, Dinge mit der Hand zu machen ist eine alte Tradition, die in Amerika besonders populär ist, egal, ob es sich dabei um Töpfern, Stricken, Bücher machen handelt – was auch immer. Meine Mutter machte es alles. Mein Vater, auf der anderen Seite, ist ein Intellektueller, der geschult ist.

Das war sie nicht. Meine Mutter produzierte „Kunst um der Kunst Willen“ und arbeitete immer mit ihren Händen. Nach Jahren harter Arbeit ist sie vor kurzem in Rente gegangen.

Sie war für viele Jahre Bäckerin aber davor besaß sie einen Baumschneide-Service. Das war ein seltener Job für eine Frau in den 70ern und ist es auch heute noch aber sie ist starkes, irisches Proletariat und hat mich sehr beeinflusst.

Sie gab mir das Geschenk und die Wertschätzung meiner Liebe zur Kunst und sie ist speziell diejenige, die mich dazu ermutigt hat, mit meinen Händen und nicht Maschinen.

Offensichtlich haben sich die Zeiten geändert und ich bin ebenso ein Technik-Junkie.

In jungen Jahren verließ ich mein Heim in Florida, um in New York City zu modeln. Ich verbrachte die meiste Zeit meines frühen Erwachsenenlebens in Manhattan. Als Teenager wurde ich von einer großen Modelagentur gesignt aber wurde schnell für zu klein befunden und habe danach auch nur sehr wenig gearbeitet. Der einzige richtige Job, an den ich mich erinnern kann, war eine alberne Werbung für eine italienische Zahncreme. Ich habe auch ein paar Musikvideos gemacht, aber schnell realisiert, dass definitiv keine Möglichkeit für mich bestand, wegen meiner Größe als Fashion-Model erfolgreich zu sein. Deshalb war ich gezwungen, schnell nachzudenken.

Ich war nicht einmal 18 Jahre alt und musste dringend Geld verdienen, also führte mich meine derzeitige Freundin, die selbst eine aufstrebende Fotografin war, an die zwielichtige aber faszinierende Welt der Fetisch-Fotografie und des -Modelns heran.

Von da an wurde ich von zwei sehr bekannten, amerikanischen Fetisch-Fotografen entdeckt, Richard Kern und Doris Kloster.

Ich wurde zu einer Art Muse in dieser underground, New Yorker BDSM-Szene und modelte ausschließlich für diese beiden Fotografen. Man findet mich in deren Büchern und interessant genug, wenn ich so an diese Fotos zurückdenke, war ich nur ein Baby, gekleidet in heftige Militäruniformen, die mein Wahlkostüm waren. Es bringt mich zum Lachen, da sich in ästhetischer Hinsicht eigentlich nichts geändert hat und ich mich immer noch sehr für Uniformen und Autorität interessiere. Ich war immer tief von Sadomasochismus fasziniert und liebte das Fetisch-Modeln aber ich wusste, dass ich letztendlich auch zur Schule gehen musste.

Während dieser Jahre in Manhattan, begann ich mich sehr für Kunst zu interessieren und fing an zu malen und Collagen zu machen. Ich schrieb mich an der New School for Social Research ein und studierte als Hauptfach in Kunstgeschichte, Kunsttheorie und Englischer Literatur. Nach der Schule arbeitete ich direkt für eine luxuriöse PR-Firma als Texterin.

der langen, ermüdenden Stunden aber sie war visuell und textorientiert: zwei meiner liebsten Dinge.

Woran arbeitest du im Moment und was inspiriert dich für dein aktuelles Projekt?

Ich bin gerade mit der Arbeit mit einem Modehaus hier in Paris fertig geworden, das maje heißt. Ich bin deren ausgesuchter Künstler für die Frühling/Sommer 2009- Kollektion. Meine Collagen werden der Look für all ihre internationalen Läden.

Es war ein harter aber aufregender Job, weil ich zum ersten Mal die Möglichkeit hatte, meine Collagen vergrößert auf unglaubliche 5x7 Meter zu sehen. Die Collagen werden für die Schaufensterreklame genutzt werden und es wurden zudem noch 20.000 Poster gemacht und ebenso noch 80.000 Postkarten. Ich kann also sagen, dass ich sehr zufrieden bin aber als typischer Zwilling, habe ich meine kleinen Finger in vielen, und ich meine VIELEN Projekten mit im Spiel. Ich arbeite an einer Linie von T-Shirts, die auf englischen Phrasen basieren und die hoffentlich bald hier in Frankreich in Kaufhäusern und Boutiquen verkauft werden.

Ich interessiere mich auch für Videoinstallationen und sexuelle Symbolik/bildliche Darstellung. Ich bin momentan dabei, beides zu kombinieren aber es ist zum Großteil immer noch in Arbeit.

Ich bin ein visueller Junkie und komme mit Bildern aller Art zur vollen Entfaltung aber insbesondere bewegten Bildern, wie Videokunst/-Installationen und Film aber ich liebe Fotografie und klassische Malerei ungeheuer, genauso wie moderne Kunst, Philosophie und das Erkunden sexueller Tabus. Am meisten aber verzaubert mich der menschliche Körper.

Wer inspiriert dich grundsätzlich als Künstler ?

Ich denke, hauptsächlich Cindy Sherman, eine amerikanische Fotografin, weil sie sich konstant von einem in einen anderen Charakter verwandelt. Sie ist auf einem endlosen Weg der Selbstentdeckung und ich bin einfach verblüfft von ihrem Ehrgeiz und ihrer Kreativität. Ich würde sagen, dass das Konzept der Neuerfindung eine großes Thema in meiner und ihrer Arbeit ist. Es ist das Konzept des Führens eines Dialoges in der ersten Person, mit mir selbst und dem Publikum, was ich sehr reizvoll finde. Ich bin ein Jungist (Anm. d. Red.: Diejenigen, die den Gedanken, Theorien und der Philosophie Carl Jungs - dem Pate der Psychotherapie - folgen, werden

Jungisten genannt) und glaube an Selbstentdeckung durch Träume, Synchronizität und Symbolismus und für mich umfasst Ms Sherman sublim alle drei. Camila Pagilia liebe ich ebenso, auch, wenn sie keine visuelle Künstlerin ist, sondern eine queere, amerikanische Philosophin, Professorin und Autorin, die über Alltagskultur, Politik und Geschlechter schreibt. Ich bin absolut in ihre faszinierenden Konzepte zu Geschlecht und Homosexualität verliebt, wo sie doch so eine echte, weibliche Rebellin ist. Ich verehre zudem Jean Michel Basquiat für sein autodidaktisches Auge und die kindhafte, bildliche Darstellung, die sehr reich an politischem und sexuellem Inhalt ist. Und natürlich Marlene Dumas, die einzig und allein mit Hinweisen quasi-pornographischen Materials arbeitet. Marlene Dumas malt ebenso Portraits von Kindern und erotische Szenen, was für mich am interessantesten ist und völlig kontrovers. Die Arbeit der Künstler, die ich genannt haben, ist zutiefst intim und persönlich und das ist genau das, was mich am meisten anspricht: Eigenidentität.

Für mich ist die Darstellung des Körpers und Gehirn und all seine inneren Tätigkeiten in einer Erzählung in der Ich-Form überaus schön und tabu, da es die Türen zu dem Inneren der am meisten versteckten Sehnsüchte einer Person öffnet.

Oh, und ich darf nicht den genialen Geist von Marcel Duchamp vergessen für seine Fähigkeit zu sammeln, wahrzunehmen, zusammenzusetzen und gefundene Objekte zu auszumustern. Das war und ist immer noch ein radikales, künstlerisches Konzept. Für mich fasst dieses Zitat von ihm zusammen, was Kunst ist: „Es ist nötig, dazu zu gelangen, das man ein Objekt wählt mit der Idee, von diesem Objekt hinsichtlich der Basis von Freude irgendeiner Art nicht beeindruckt zu sein. Jedoch ist es schwer ein Objekt zu wählen, was einen absolut nicht interessiert, nicht nur an dem Tag, an dem man es gewählt hat und was keinerlei Chancen hat attraktiv oder schön zu werden und welches nicht angenehm anzugucken, noch besonders hässlich ist.“ Du lebst jetzt in Paris. Was hat dich von den Vereinigten Staaten nach Frankreich gebracht?

Meine wunderschöne und talentierte Frau, natürlich. Sie lebte in Paris und ich in den Staaten und wir konnten einfach keine Sekunde länger mehr voneinander getrennt sein. Jennifer, you have recommended U:D so many amazing artists by now, what is your own artistic background and where are you from?

Bitte erzähl uns von Deiner und Aurélies Firma Couronne Productions.

To begin with, I truly believe in the concept of U;D and have many friends who are super talented artists. So when I was approached, I just dove right in. I am a visual person and I will do almost anything for supporting the arts-- especially alternative and new concepts. I support up and coming artists, including myself, and love helping minorities of all types get into the arts, whether they be queer, transitioning, women, aliens, etc.

Uns gehört eine kleine DIY hardcore und extrem radikale, avante garde, psycho-sexuelle Porno-Produktion. Wir machen 5 bis 10 Minuten lange, höchst abgestimmte, erotische Videos.

Diese Videos sind nicht für jeden, da sie sich eingehend mit sehr persönlichen und bizarren sexuellen Gewohnheiten befassen. Wir sind sehr aufgeregt wegen unseren eigenen Videos und freuen uns, sie sehr bald verkaufen zu können.

Wir erkunden eine Variation an Themen, mitsamt BDSM, Geschlecht, Kunst in Form der Terrorisierung des Körpers und insbesondere des Geistes. Die Arbeit ist zugleich schön wegen des wundervollen Editings, extrem provokativen Konzepts und sehr alternativ und persönlich.

Eure Leser können mit dem kleinen Teaser, namens „Buchette“, den wir für U:D gemacht haben einen Einblick in unsere Leben bekommen. Es ist nicht die typische, lesbische Pornographie – gelinde gesagt. Es geht weit über sexuelle Akte hinaus und gräbt sich direkt in das Zentrum der Tabus und Merkwürdigkeiten. Sie und ich sind beide ein bisschen strange, also könnt ich euch denken, dass die Videos höchst erotisch aber zugleich faszinierend und komisch sind. Wir sind definitiv unsere eigenen Beeinflussungen. Müssten wir aber einige unserer Einflüsse beschrieben oder gar beim Namen nennen, wären es Filmregisseure wie Larry Clark, Gus Van Sant and besonders Harmony Korine, die Regisseurin von „Kids“. Diese Regisseure erforschen eine Art verbotenen Realismus, den wir teilen. Wir erforschen, was nur uns interessant erscheint und indem wir das tun – das Kreieren von nur sexueller Exploration und „Bedeutung“ in unserer kleinen Vignette - erwarten wir kein Urteil. Wir sind eher entschlossen, eine Story für ihre wesentlichen Werte und das einträufelnde Gefühl in unseren pornografischen Filmen zu präsentieren. Wir wollen, dass das Publikum sich fragt und leicht unwohl fühlt, oder zumindest etwas anderes, ungewöhnliches fühlt, was genauso schön ist, aber ein bisschen grotesk und komisch.

Well, I was born in Miami, Florida, as an only child to two crazy hippie artists.I lived on an artist commune for the first 3 years of my life. My father was a musician and a painter, and my mother was more or less involved in arts and crafts.

Arts and crafts is an old tradition, especially popular in America, of making things by hand, whether it be pottery, knitting, book making-- you name it. My mother did it all. My father, on the other hand is an intellectual and was trained, my mother was not. My mother simply produces „art for art‘s sake,“ and has always worked with her hands. After years of hard labor, she just recently retired. She was a baker for many years but before that, she owned her own tree cutting service.

This was a rare job for a woman in the 70‘s and still today, but she is a strong Irish proletariat and was huge influence on me. She gave me the gift and appreciation for my love of art and in particular, she is the one who encouraged me to work with my hands and not machinary. Obviously, times have changed and I am a technological junkie as well.

At a very young age I left my home in Florida to model in New York City. I spent most of my early adult life in Manhattan.

As a teenager, I was signed by big modeling agency, but was quickly found to be too short, and subsequently, worked very little. The only real job I remember was a silly little ad for an Italian toothpaste commercial. I also did a couple of music videos but realized quickly that there was no way I could succeed as a fashion model because of my height, so I was forced to think fast. I wasn‘t even 18 years old and needed to make money badly, so my girlfriend at the time, who was an up and coming photographer herself, introduced me to the seedy, but fascinating world of fetish photography and modeling. From there, I was discovered by

the two very famous American fetish photographers, Richard Kern and Doris Kloster. I became somewhat of a muse in this underground NYC BDSM scene and modeled exclusively for these two photographers. I can be found in their books, and interestingly enough looking back on those photos, I was just a baby dressed in very severe military uniforms, as this was my costume of choice. It makes me laugh because nothing has really changed aesthetically for me in these years as I am still very interested in uniforms and authority.

I have always been deeply and profoundly fascinated with sadomasochism and loved the fetish modeling but knew I had to go to school eventually. During these years in Manhattan, I became very interested in the arts and began painting and collaging. I enrolled in the New School for Social Research and eventually majored in art history, art theory and English literature. After, school, I went straight into working for a luxury public relations firm as a copywriter. This work was not exactly thrilling due to the long, tedious hours but was visual and text oriented: two of my favorite things.

What are you working on at the moment and what inspires you for your current project?

I just got finished working with a major fashion house here in Paris called maje. I am their chosen artist for their Spring/ Summer 2009 collection. My collages will be their look for all their stores internationally. This was a hard job but thrilling because for the first time, I was able to see my collages blown up to the extraordinary size of 5x7 meters.

The collages will be used for window display and there were 20,000 posters made plus 80,000 postcards. So, you can say, I am quite pleased, but as the typical Gemini, I have my little fingers working on many and I mean many projects. I am working on a line of t-shirts based on English phrases, hopefully, to be sold and distributed here in France at department stores and boutiques. I am also interested in video installations and sexual imagery. I am in the process of combining the two at the moment but it is still very much of a work in progress. I am a visual junkie and thrive on images of all types but especially moving images, such as video art/installations and cinema. But I adore photography and classical painting enormously, as well as modern art, philosophy and exploring sexual taboos. But most of all, I am enthralled by the human body.

Who as an artist inspires you basically?

I think by far Cindy Sherman, the American photographer, because she is constantly morphing into character after character. She is on an endless journey of self discovery and I am just amazed at her ambition and creativity. I would say that the concept of ‚reinvention‘ is a huge theme in my work and in hers. It is this concept of running a first person dialogue with myself and the audience that is truly appealing to me. I am a Jungist (author’s note: Those who follow the thought/theory/philosophy of Carl Jung –the father of psycho therapy - are called Jungists) and I believe in selfdiscovery through dreams, synchronicity and symbolism, and for me, Ms. Sherman encompasses all three sublimely. I also love Camille Pagilia, even though she is not a visual artist, but an American queer philosopher, professor and writer who writes on popular culture, politics and gender. I am absolutely in love with her intriguing concepts on gender and homosexuality as she is a true female rebel. I also adore Jean Michel Basquiat for his autodidact eye and child like imagery that is super rich in political and sexual content. And, of course, Marlene Dumas, who works solely with references of quasi-pornographic material. Marlene Dumas also paints portraits of children and erotic scenes, which for me is most interesting and completely controversial. The work of all the artists, I‘ve mentioned is deeply intimate and personal and this is exactly what appeals to me the most: self-identity.

For me, the exposure of the body and the brain and all of its inner workings in a first person narrative is extremely beautiful and taboo as it opens the doors to the inside of one‘s most hidden desires. Oh, and I cannot forget the genius mind of Marcel Duchamp for his ability to collect, discern, put together and reject found objects. This was and still is a radical artistic concept. For me this quote of his sums up art for me, „It is necessary to arrive at selecting an object with the idea of not being impressed by this object on the basis of enjoyment of any order. However, it is difficult to select an object that absolutely does not interest you, not only on the day on which you select it, and which does not have any chance of becoming attractive or beautiful and which is neither pleasant to look at nor particularly ugly.“

You live in Paris now. What has brought you from the United States to France?

My gorgeous and talented wife, of course. She lived in Paris and I lived in the States and there was no way we could be separated a second longer. Now for me living in France is very hard as I do not speak the language, but the culture is rich, and I have gained a lot by living here not only true love but an appreciation for life that I was lacking in the States.

Couronne Productions is an alternative dyke porn series starring King René and Queen Claudine.

Please tell us about your and Aurélie‘s company Couronne Productions.

We own a small D.I.Y. hardcore and extremely radical, avant garde, psycho-sexual pornography production. We make 5 to 10 minute highly edited and very hardcore erotic videos.

These videos are not for everyone as they delve into very personal and bizarre sexual habits. We are very excited about our videos and are looking forward to selling them very soon.

We explore a variation of themes including BDSM, gender, art as terrorizing the body and especially, the mind. The work is both beautiful due to its wonderful editing, extremely sexually provocative concepts, and very alternative and extremely personal. Your audience can get a peak into our lives with the small teaser we did for U:D called „Buchette.“ It is not at all your typical lesbian pornography-- to say the least. It goes above and beyond sexual acts and digs right into the center of taboo and oddities. She and I are both a little strange, so you can guess that the videos are highly erotic, but at the same time intriguing and weird. We are our own influences, defintely. Yet, if I had to describe or name some of our influences, they would be cinematic directors such as, Larry Clark, Gus Van Sant and especially, Harmony Korine, the director of „Kids.“ These directors explore a type of forbidden realism that we share. We explore what is interesting to us only, and by doing so, we assume no judgment, creating only sexual exploration and ‚meaning‘ in our small vignettes. We are more intent on presenting a story for its intrinsic values and instilling ‚feeling‘ in our pornographic films. We want the audience to question and feel slightly uncomfortable, or at the very least, ‚feel‘ something different, unusual which is equally beautiful but slightly grotesque and strange.

Wann hast Du angefangen zu Sprühen?

Meine ersten Graffiti-Skizzen sind so von 1991/92, mein erstes richtiges Piece habe ich allerdings erst 1996 an die Wand gesprüht.

Was inspiriert Dich und was ist für Dich das Besondere am Graffiti?

Mit 15 oder 16 Jahren hat es mich begeistert, weil es verboten, cool, bunt, kreativ und kraftvoll ist. Heute bin ich vom Graffiti begeistert, weil es verboten, cool, bunt, kreativ und kraftvoll ist, aber mittlerweile auch, weil ich mir das Recht herausnehme, meine Stadt mitzugestalten und nicht nur das hinnehme, was mir vorgesetzt wird, wie zum Beispiel Werbung. Außerdem finde ich es interessant, was mit Buchstaben alles möglich ist und wie man sie zum Leben erwecken kann. Und ich liebe die Kommunikation untereinander – für Außenstehende ist es ja meist Krikelkrakel, aber wenn man die Zeichen versteht, kann es sehr aufschlussreich sein und ab und zu ist auach mal ein Gruß oder ein Spruch für einen dabei. Mittlerweile ist es auch ein Treffen mit Freunden, die alle das gleiche Hobby miteinander genießen.

Und: Ich liebe den Geruch von Sprühlack.

Sprühst Du ausschließlich Wände oder ist da auch der ein oder andere zug dabei?

Nein, Züge habe ich noch nicht bemalt. Ich bemale lieber Wände, aber wer weiß, was noch kommt.

Wo außer in Berlin sind Deine Pieces zu sehen?

In Düsseldorf und Köln.

Was ist das für ein Gefühl, das fertige Bild später wieder zu sehen?

Wenn es mir dann immer noch gefällt, ein schönes. Ich habe mal circa 12 Jahre alte Tags von mir entdeckt, die fand ich nicht mehr schön, aber es war trotzdem cool, nach so langer Zeit seine eigenen Spuren wieder zu entdecken.

Machst Du auch Auftragsarbeiten?

Selten, da es mich zu sehr einschränkt. Die meisten denken, das sei doch schön, sein Hobby zum Beruf zu machen. Aber es ist ein großer Unterschied zwischen dem, den eigenen Style zu malen oder wie vom Auftraggeber gewünscht - einen Palmenstrand.

Wenn ich Aufträge annehme, dann meistens solche, bei denen mir selbst noch ein großer kreativer Spielraum bleibt oder in sozialen Zusammenhängen – zum Beispiel habe ich mal mit einem Schulschwänzer-Projekt eine Leinwand bemalt und Ähnliches.

Wie sind Frauen in der (Berliner) Graffiti-Szene repräsentiert und wie ist deren Akzeptanz Deiner Meinung nach - oder spielt das Geschlecht keinerlei Rolle?

Die Situation wird besser, da immer mehr Frauen zur Dose greifen – ich würde grob sagen, der Frauenanteil liegt bei fünf Prozent – und gute Sachen fabrizieren, aber dennoch ist keine absolute Gleichberechtigung da. Das äußert sich darin, dass einer Frau weniger eine eigene Style-Erfindung zugetraut wird; im Zweifelsfall hat sie es eher von ihren Kumpels abgeguckt und nicht andersrum. Oder eine Sprüherin kann schon schnell in den Ruf einer Bitch kommen, wenn sie zwei oder mehr Beziehungen innerhalb der Szene hatte. Das alte Lied.

Du malst auch Bilder in Acryl, die vom Stil her doch recht anders ausschauen. Ist das ein graphischer und mentaler Ausgleich?

Ein einziges künstlerisches Medium als Ausdruck langweilt mich ehrlich gesagt auf Dauer. Wenn ich immer mal was Anderes mache, kann ich auch beim Acrylmalen Ideen für das Graffiti finden oder anders herum.

Außerdem fotografiere ich noch, mache Comics, Illustrationen und Grafikdesign, und ich brauche alles und möchte mich nicht entscheiden müssen, da das Eine das Andere immer mit belebt und beeinflusst.

Wie schaut es aus mit Ausstellungen Deiner Arbeiten?

Gab es schon welche oder hast Du eine in Planung?

Ja es gab schon einige, allerdings bin ich grad auf der Suche nach einer Galerie. Also wer etwas in der Richtung weiß, kann sich gerne bei mir melden.

When did you start to spray?

I have done my first sketches in 1991/1992. Though my first real piece I sprayed on a wall was in 1996.

What inspires you, and also what to you is special about graffiti?

When I was 15 or 16 years old, I was interested in graffiti because it is forbidden, cool, colourful, creative and vigorous.

Today I am into graffiti because it is forbidden, cool, colourful, creative and vigorous. But furthermore I regard it my right to take part in styling my city instead of just accepting what I get served like for example advertisements. Besides this it amazes me what can be done with letters and how you can make them come alive. Furthermore I love how you can communicate with other sprayers. For outsiders it is mostly just illegible scrawl. But if you understand the pieces and tags the message can be revealing. Sometimes the sprayer has added a greeting to you even. Meanwhile it has become a kind of get together with friends who share the same hobby.

– And, I love the smell of spray paint.

Do you exclusively spray walls or do you spray trains as well?

No, I haven’t sprayed trains so far. I prefer walls, but we’ll see what time will bring.

Where except for Berlin people can see your pieces?

In Duesseldorf and Cologne.

What kind of feeling is it to see a piece again after some time?

If I still like the piece then the feeling is a good one. I once discovered 12 year old tags that I had made. I didn’t like them anymore, but nevertheless it has been cool seeing one’s own traces after such a long time.

Do you also take spraying orders from people?

Seldom, it determines me too much. Most people think it would be nice to turn one’s hobby into a job. Though it makes much difference to draw your own style or to fulfill a client’s wish – if he wishes a palm beach for instance. If I accept an order, then mostly just those that offer me some creative freedom. I also accept orders in social contexts. For instance I did a project with truants and painted on canvas with them.

How are women represented in the (Berlin) graffiti scene and how is acceptance by male colleagues or does the gender play no role at all?

Situation becomes better, because the number of women who spray and who are really talented increases. I would say women make up five percent of all graffiti sprayers.

Nevertheless there is no absolute sexual equality. This is expressed by distrust in women’s ability to create new styles.

In case of doubt, she has copied the mens’ styles, not vice versa. Or a female sprayer gets bad reputation of being a bitch, if she has had two or more relationships within the scene. The same old song.

You also paint in acrylics. Those pictures differ from your graffiti pieces in style. Is that a graphic and mental compensation?

To express yourself in just one way bores me in the long run. If I change techniques once in a while I can come up with ideas for graffiti by painting acrylic or vice versa.

Furthermore I take pictures, draw comics, illustrations, and also do graphic design. I need all of that and I don’t want to decide between them because one technique always vitalizes and influences the others.

How about exhibitions? Have you had any already or do you have plans for them?

Yes, I have had some. Though, at the moment I am searching for a gallery. So if anybody knows something, she or he is very welcome to tell me.

Sitting on glasses.

Die junge Frau steht einen Moment nachdenklich auf der Straße. Dann kniet sie sich hin und befestigt ihre Gedanken auf dem nassen Asphalt. Ein simples Herz aus Klebeband.

Wie geht die Geschichte aus? Was ist an dieser Ecke der Stadt liebenswert?

Hoffentlich bleiben die Gedanken der Vorbeilaufenden kurz am hellen Tape hängen. Bestenfalls erinnern sich einige auf dem Weg zum Kiosk an die Liebe, vielleicht nimmt der eine oder andere die Straße heute wieder wahr. Gabriela möchte aufwecken, die Menschen aus ihrem Alltag reißen – und den Blick von den Schuhen. Deshalb klebt die Tschechin auch Brillen auf Steinbänke. Wie geheime Aussichtspunkte verteilt sie die an öffentlichen Plätzen in großen Städten.

Nehmt euch Zeit, setzt euch und beobachtet Menschen.

Unterwegs nach Berlin packte Gabriela, die sich Indochina nennt, in diesem Jahr nur Klebeband ein. Marker und Spraydosen passten nicht mehr in den Rucksack. Das ärgerte sie so lange, bis sie merkte, dass sie mit dem Tape in der Lage war auf jede Laune der Stadt zu reagieren. Anstatt dem Ort einen Stempel mit Graffiti oder Schriftzügen aufzudrücken, geht sie seit dem auf ihn ein. Gabriela klebt Ausflugsdampfer auf Pfeiler kleiner Brücken, Traktoren an Scheunentore und Blumen an Zäune. Streetart am Computer zu entwerfen macht für sie wenig Sinn.

Mit fünfzehn druckte sie die ersten Papieraufkleber. Ein kleines chinesisches Mädchen zeigte an welchen Orten Gabriela sich aufgehalten hatte. Schon damals empfand sie Street Art wohl als eine stumme Sprache um schöne Gedanken für andere festzuhalten. Und davon hat sie viele.

Indochinas Kunst macht glücklich. Nichts kritisches, nichts Politisches klebt sie auf die Straßen - zum kritisieren braucht man erst einmal offene Augen.

Mit dem Klebeband wurde sie dieses Jahr beim internationalen Stickeraward in Berlin zweite. Darauf ist Gabriela stolz, denn das zeigt ihr, dass auch andere Künstler ihre Ideen gut finden. Doch so lange ihre Mutter keinen ihrer Sticker auf dem Auto haben möchte, ist die 23-Jährige nicht zufrieden.

Also mischt sie weiter in der kleinen aber feinen Street Art Szene der Tschechischen Republik mit. Große Underground Geheimnisse gibt es da nicht. „With some overwiew you can divide it into quality and sh*t. “fasst Gabriela die Lage zusammen.

Nachts tanzt sie zu guter Musik. Welche Musik sie mag, will sie mir nicht sagen, denn sie mag Musik - macht nach einiger Zeit Sinn. Indie und Electro verrät sie dann doch.

Und von Jackson bis The Cure. Tagsüber würde sie gerne immer snowboarden – oder surfen. Als sie das erzählt, funkeln ihre Augen.

Im Winter bringt Gabriela Kindern Snowboarden bei, in fünf Jahren sieht sie sich auf einem Surf Brett in der Karibik.

Stimmt nicht fällt ihr dann ein, denn kurz darauf zählt sie mir leidenschaftlich die schönsten Dinge in ihrer Heimat auf. Neben gutem Bier und vielen freundlichen Menschen sind das Prags nächtliche Geheimnisse und die Natur.

Gabriela ist eine Frau, mit der man gerne Geheimnisse erleben möchte. Sie ist ungeduldig, und vom Guten dieser Welt felsenfest überzeugt. Sie reist, lernt, nimmt und gibt zurück – in Form von Minigedanken aus Klebeband oder Farbe auf Mauern.

Und ans Weiße Haus sagt sie, wird sie irgendwann ein großes rotes Kreuz kleben...

Sitting on glasses.

A young woman is standing pensively on the street for a moment. Then she kneels down to attach her thought to the wet asphalt. A simple heart shaped of scotch tape. How does this story end? What is loveable on this part of the city?

Hopefully, the thoughts of the people passing by will stick to the white tape for a short moment. At best some of them will think about love on their way to the kiosk. Maybe one or another will take notice of the street again today. Gabriela wants to wake up people, drag them out of their everyday routine – so they stop starring at their shoes. That’s why the Czech is covering benches of stone with specs shaped of tape. Like secret viewpoints, she spreads them in public places over big cities. “Take your time, sit down and watch people”.

Gabriella, who calls herself “Indochina”, bagged only scotch tape when she came to Berlin this year. There was no more space for markers and cans in her backpack. She stopped being upset about that, as soon as she recognized that it was the scotch tape that enabled her to react spontaneously to every mood of the city. Instead of putting a stamp on the place with Graffiti and letterings, she is more responsive to it now. Gabriela is sticking big boats on piers of small bridges, tractors on ban doors and flowers on fences. Creating street art on the computer is not making too much sense to her.

keeps on joining the small but nice street art scene of the Czech Republic. There are no big underground mysteries: „With some overview you can divide it into quality and sh*t.“ she describes the scene.

At night she likes to dance to good music. At first she doesn’t want to tell me what music she likes, because she likes music – makes sense after a while. But then she reveilles: Indie and Electro, and from the Jackson’s to the Cure. In the day-time she only wants to go snowboarding or surfing. She tells that with a sparkle in her eyes.

During winter Gabriela teaches kids how to snowboard. In 5 years she sees herself on a surfboard in the Caribbean, she says. One moment later she revises and starts to talk enthusiastic about the most beautiful things in her home.

Besides good beer and a lot of nice people there are the night-time-mysteries of Prague and the landscape.

Gabriela is a woman to discover mysteries with. She is inpatient and profoundly convinced of the good in the world. She is travelling, learning, taking and giving back – in the form of small ideas made of scotch tape or paintings on the walls.

And on the white house, she is going to stick a large red cross some day, she says.

At the age of 15 she printed her first paper stickers. A little Chinese girl showed where Gabriela had been. Back then she already seemed to consider street art as a mute language to capture pretty thoughts and show them to others. And she has a lot of those thoughts. Indochina’s Art just makes you happy. It’s nothing critical or political she covers the streets with – to criticize something, you need to open your eyes first.

With her adhesive Art she won the second prize at the international sticker award this year in Berlin. That makes Gabriela proud; because it shows to her that other artists also like her ideas. But as long as her mother does not want one of her stickers on her car, the 23 year old isn’t satisfied. So she

Dass die gebürtige Belgierin Riet Meert, die seit Anfang 2008 in Augsburg lebt und dort neben ihrer Produktion der Chica Dolls maßgeblich auch die Minimal Techno und House Partyorganisation und das gleichnamige Label und Booking-Agentur Parallel betreibt, Grafikdesign und Illustration studiert hat, hätte man ahnen können. Die Puppen, die sie in Handarbeit produziert, reflektieren erkennbar den optischen Stil von Sticker Art Charakteren.

It seems to be obvious that Riet Meert from Belgium who now lives in Augsburg, Germany and produces sweet and nasty little Chica Dolls has majored in graphic design and illustration as the individually sewed doll’s style reflects the style of sticker art characters.

2003 ursprünglich als Abschluss-Arbeit ihres Studiums gestartet, hat Riet Meert die Herstellung der Chica Dolls aufgrund der Nachfrage weitergeführt. Als die Chica Dolls das öffentliche Interesse auf sich zogen, konnten sie aber nicht nur neue Freunde in ihre zum Teil langen Arme schließen. Riet Meert ist seit 2005 in diversen Magazinen und Ausstellungen in Belgien, den Niederlanden und auch in Spanien vertreten.

Die verschiedenen Serien der Chica Dolls entwirft und näht Riet Meert nicht nur in unterschiedlichen Farben und Materialen sondern, auf Wunsch auch in den unterschiedlichsten Größen. Standardgroße Chicas messen eine Höhe von 25 cm.

Next to her work for Minimal Techno and House party organization Parallel which is also label and booking agency for DJs, Riet Meert has been creating the Chica Dolls since she started off with sewing the little textile creatures for her thesis in 2003. When friends and public got interested in the Chicas, Riet Meert not only sold the characters. She has also had exhibitions in Belgium, the Netherlands as well as in Spain since 2005 and has been featured in several magazines.

Riet Meert creates and sews the Chica Dolls series not only in different materials and colours but, when wished so, also in different sizes. Standard size is 25 cm height.

Wann hast Du angefangen, Deine Plüschpuppen zu kreieren?

Ich habe mit der Kreation der Plüschpuppen 2006 angefangen, nachdem ich in Läden nichts als Standard Teddybären gefunden habe. Ich wollte etwas Einzigartiges und Lustiges als Geschenk.

Wie kommt es, dass Du gerade diese Art lustiger und dreist ausschauender Puppen nähst?

[Lacht] Die Plüschpuppen resultieren aus meinen Kritzeleien. Ich habe mir selbst gesagt, wenn ich sie kritzeln kann, dann kann ich sie wahrscheinlich auch mit ein bisschen Filz und Garn zum Leben erwecken.

Was inspiriert Dich zu Schaffung all dieser Charaktere?

Ich liebe das Spielzeug aus den 80erm, Regenbogen, und ich bin davon überzeugt, dass es irgendwo in diesem Universum Einhörner gibt. Ich bin sehr von irgendwas und allem inspiriert. Von einem flauschigen klassischen Pulli bis hin zu Bonbonpapier. Was auch immer.

Seit wann verkaufst Du die Puppen professionell unter dem Namen Paper Girl Productions?

Ich verkaufe seit 2006 professionell und das Internet hat mir einen riesigen Markt gegeben, den ich sonst nie erreicht hätte.

Hattest Du bereits Ausstellungen? Wann und wo haben diese stattgefunden?

Ich nehme nur an unabhängigen Handwerks-Ausstellungen mit anderen Künstlern und Handwerkern in meiner Stadt teil. Die Vorbereitungen sind sehr aufwendig.

Manchmal wünsche ich mir, ich könnte an mehr als bisher teilnehmen.

Ist über Deine Paper Girl Productions bereits in einem Magazin oder Kunstbuch veröffentlicht worden?

Wegen des neuen CPSIA USA Gesetzes, das am 10.

Februar2009 in Kraft tritt, werde ich leider nicht länger in den USA verkaufen können. Aber ich verkaufe überall anders hin, und ich freue mich, dass meine Plüschpuppen von Brasilien bis nach Australien angenommen worden sind. Das ist schon ein erstaunlicher Weg gewesen! Momentan verkaufe ich sie in meinem Etsy Shop und für Großhandelsbestellungen kontaktieren mich die Händler direkt.

Welche Größe haben Deine Puppen grundsätzlich, oder variiert die Größe?

Wenn die Menschen die Puppen in Natura sehen, sind sie so überrascht, dass die Puppen viel größer als online wahrgenommen sind. Die meisten sind über 8 Inches [20,32 cm; Anmerkung der Redaktion] groß.

Irgendwelche Projekte, die Du für 2009 für Paper Girl Productions planst?

Bitte gib Acht auf Paper Girl Productions im neuen Jahr, denn es wird definitiv eine neue Linie diesen Sommer rauskommen. Bleib dran!

Was ist Dein Wunsch betreffend Paper Girl Productions und Deine kleinen Freunde?

Als ich zunächst Paper Girl Productions begann, war alles, was ich jemals wollte, ein Kichern hervorrufen und einigen Spaß mit den Plüschpuppen, die ich gemacht habe. Ich will das Mädel sein, über das sie sagen; „Warte, bist Du nicht das Paper Girl, das all diese süßen, ulkigen, verbundenen Puppen macht?“ … Ja, das bin ich, wie ich herumlaufe mit meinen kleinen Miau-Kätzchen in meinem Kopf.

When did you start creating the Plush Dolls?

I started creating plush dolls in 2006 when I couldn‘t find anything but the standard teddy bear in stores here and wanted something unique and fun to give as a gift.

How come you got into sewing these funny and nasty looking dolls?

[Laughs] The plush dolls are created from my doodles and I told myself if I could doodle them I can certainly turn them into life with some felt and thread.

What inspires you for the creation of all these characters?

I love the 80‘s toys, rainbows and am convinced there are unicorns somewhere in this universe. I am much inspired by anything and everything. A vintage fuzzy sweater to paper candy. You name it!

Since when are you selling the dolls professionally under the name Paper Girl Productions?

I have been selling professionally since 2006 and the internet has given me a vast market that I never would have otherwise reached.

What size are the dolls basically or does size vary?

When people see the dolls in person they are so excited for the dolls are much larger then perceived online. Most are about 8 inches tall.

Any projects you plan for Paper Girl Productions in 2009?

When I first began Paper Girl Productions, all I ever wanted was to evoke a giggle and some fun with the plush dolls I‘ve made. I want to be the girl they say: ‚Wait aren‘t you the Paper Girl that makes all those cute weird conjoined dolls?‘....yup, that‘s me as I walk around with my little meow meows on my head.

Have you had exhibitions so far? When and where were those?

I only take part in indie craft shows that are done in my city along with other unique artists and crafters. They take a lot to prepare for and sometimes I wish I could take part in more.

Have your Paper Girl Productions been featured in some magazine or art book yet?

I have taken part in the book, Crammed Organisms which was a blast! I‘ve also had print and online press for my work that you can find on my website.

Do you wholesale internationally? Would customers from Europe be able to order them at yours?

Because of the new CPSIA USA law coming into effect as of Feb.10th, 2009 I will no longer be selling to the USA unfortunately but I do sell everywhere else and am so tickled that my plush dolls have been adopted from Brazil to Australia. It’s been an amazing ride! For now, I am currently selling them in my etsy shop and for wholesale orders,

Huch, wo sind denn jetzt Pop und Elektronik hin? Das jedenfalls ließe sich nach dem ersten Hören von Barbara Morgensterns fünftem Album fragen. Sie scheint nun neue Sphären musikalischen Ausdrucks zu betreten und nähert sich einer fast schwermütigen Chanson-Ästhetik an: Hierfür hat sie Orgel und Piano gegen einen Bechsteinflügel eingetauscht und Elektronisches häufig auf wenige Drumoder Geräusch-Fragmente reduziert. Hustefuchs, Für Luise oder Camouflage (eine Zusammenarbeit mit Soft-MachineLegende Robert Wyatt) kommen beinah ohne elektronisches Gefrickel daher. Stattdessen begeben sie sich in Bereiche des Kunstlieds, eigenwilliger Dissonanzen oder jazziger Träumereien. Einige ihrer Songs hat Morgenstern von der Cellistin Julia Kent (Antony and the Johnsons) mit opulenten Klangperlen aus dem Streichsegment versehen lassen. In Velocity oder Morbus Basedow verbinden sich neuer und alter Sound: Morbus Basedow evoziert dabei mit harten NoiseDrums eine polyrhythmische, finstere Geräuschkulisse und erzählt von Tod und Vergänglichkeit menschlichen Wirkens.

Auf Come To Berlin und Monokultur finden sich Ansätze politischer Reflexion: Morgenstern beschreibt nivellierende Dimensionen der Yuppisierung Berlins und reflektiert doch gleichzeitig den eigenen Anteil daran: „es geht / um die Sicht auf uns selbst, wir sind das: / thirty-something-whitemiddle-class“. Zwar changierte Barbara Morgenstern schon immer zwischen elektronischen und poppigen Welten; dass sie beides aber derart weit hinter sich lassen würde, damit hätte wohl niemand gerechnet. Und auch wenn dieser Wandel die Anhängerschaft minimalistischen und elektropoppigen Songwritings möglicherweise enttäuschen mag, so ist doch der komplexe Sound von bm außergewöhnlich gut gelungen.

Oops, where have all the pop and electronics gone? This question comes to mind after having listened to Barbara Morgenstern‘s fifth album for the first time. She seems to enter new spheres of musical expression and her music resembles more and more classical and almost gloomy chansons: For this she has swapped her Vermona organ and her piano for a Bechstein grand piano. And she often reduces electronic elements to a minimum of drum or sound fragments. Hustefuchs, Für Luise or Camouflage (a collaboration with Soft-Machine-hero Robert Wyatt) cut out almost all electronic dots. Instead of that Morgenstern takes them to the level of Lied, maverick dissonances or jazzy reveries. Several songs on BM are provided with string gems by cellist Julia Kent (Antony and the Johnsons). And Velocity and Morbus Basedow connect Morgenstern‘s new sound with the older one: With its hard noise drums Morbus Basedow evokes a polyrhythmic and dark soundscape and it talks about dead and the transience of human efforts. Come to Berlin and Monokultur are signs of political reflections: Morgenstern describes leveling dimensions of gentrification in Berlin and she reflects at the same time her own participation in these processes: „es geht / um die Sicht auf uns selbst, wir sind das: / thirty-something-white-middle-class“ (transl.: it‘s all about self-reflection, we are that: …). Barbara Morgenstern used to alternate between electronic and pop styles; but scarcely anybody would have expected that she would beat both by a mile. This change might be frustrating for fans of minimalistic and electro-pop songwriting. Even so, the complex and eclectic sound of BM is a huge success.

„Different Steps To Stumble“

„Nicht stolpern bitte“ krakeelt Monotekktoni aka Tonia Reeh ins Mikro, nachdem sie eine Salve blutrünstiger und sehnsüchtiger Worte abgefeuert hat. Auf dem gleichnamigen Track ihres neuen Albums und im Gefilde neuer Experimentiergelüste persifliert sie einen GangstaRap und bewegt sich dabei von Nonsens-Reimen, über Mordphantasien hin zu einer Kritik an den Kletten Krieg und „Egoismus, der immer mit muss“. Dabei entsteht ein ebenso verstörendes wie bestechendes Gebräu aus Wortwitz, Sarkasmus und Selbstironie. Ansonsten geht es auf Different Steps To Stumble ähnlich laut und zappelig zu wie auf ihren drei Vorgängeralben: Tonia Reeh jagt ihre Vocals und selbst produzierten Samples durch Mikro, Megaphon, Distortion, Delay, Sequenzer und erinnert dabei an PJ Harvey, Alec Empire oder Hanin Elias. Das ganze kontrastiert sie mit von Steve Reich inspirierten Beats, knatternden Basslinien oder Synthie-Glockenspielen. Where‘s The Hole oder Your Colour Was Not Strong Enough zeigen, wie Monotekktoni ihre Hörerinnen durch ein Klanggewitter schleppt, das nicht nur mit akustischen Stolpersteinen, sondern auch mit warmen und fast eingängigen Melodien versehen ist.

Die klaren politischen Statements vom Vorgängeralbum Love your Neighbours? No, thanks! (2007) verschwimmen nun in einem allgemeinen Ausdruck von Wut und Trauer über die Welt an sich und über eigene Unzulänglichkeiten. Das mag im ersten Moment enttäuschen. Allerdings sprechen die Stimmen der Antiheldinnen aus Stupid Girl oder Häßlichent genauso wie Monotekktonis Sound insgesamt eine ganz eigene Sprache: Niemand kann überzeugender gegen Konsum und Normierung anschreien. So lautet die eigentliche Empfehlung dieses Albums auch: Bitte stolpern!

Und das nicht zu leise!

„Nicht stolpern bitte“ (transl.: don‘t stumble, please) is what Monotekktoni aka Tonia Reeh yells into the micro after having thrown a furious bunch of lurid and longing words into the air. Here on the same named track and in the field of new experiments she satirizes a gangsta-rap. Thereby she moves between nonsense rhymes, imagined murders and a critic of war and egoism. So it arises a special mix of pun, sarcasm and self mockery. Apart from that Different Steps To Stumble is as loud and fidgety as Monotekktoni‘s previous releases are. As usual Tonia Reeh shoots her vocals and self produced samples through micro, megaphone, distortion, delay, sequencer and she evokes reminiscences of PJ Harvey, Alec Empire or Hanin Elias. All that she contrasts with beats inspired by Steve Reich, with rattling bass lines or synthesized chimes. Where‘s The Hole or Your Colour Was Not Strong Enough show that Monotekktoni takes her listeners through stormy sounds which aren‘t only provided with acoustic stumbling blocks but also with warm and nearly catchy melodies. Explicit political statements as you can find them on her preceding release Love your Neighbours?

No, thanks! (2007) become blurred now: You rather meet general expressions of anger at and sadness about the world in itself and one‘s own deficiencies. In the first moment this generalization might disappoint. However, the antiheroes in Stupid Girl or Häßlichent (transl.: ugly-duck) as well as Monotekktoni‘s sound as a whole are speaking for themselves: Whoever else could exclaim against consumption and normalization more convincingly? That‘s why the actual recommendation of this release reads as follows: Stumble, please! But not too gentle!

Willkommen auf dem Atari-Sound-Spielplatz, in dem Superhelden und Magier ihre Wege durch jeweils zwei Aund B-Level des 10“ Vinyls hindurch kämpfen, das den illustrativen Titel Inner City Angst trägt.

You Love Her Coz She’s Dead, schon der Name dieser “digitalen electro trash” Band hat meinen Nerv getroffen und mein Verlangen geweckt, mir die EP des Duos anzuhören.

Elle und Jay Dead haben mit dieser kleinen genialen 10“ Inner City Angst gerade ihre Debüt EP veröffentlicht.

Beide scheinen Computerspiele-Sounds der 1980er Jahre zu mögen, mit denen sämtliche der vier Tracks beginnen.

Diese Sounds liegen den Tracks im Weiteren zugrunde oder kehren mit einiger Konstanz wieder, während der Gesang von Elle und Jay, Bass und Drum-Effekte Spannungs- und emotionalen Aspekt mit hineinbringen. Geschwindigkeit der, Tracks, die Melodie und der Gesang wecken gemeinsam das Verlangen zu tanzen.

Alles in Allem hat Kitsuné Maison mit You Love Her Coz She’s Dead und ihrem Debut 10” Inner City Angst wieder ein Duo im Programm, das den für das Label spezifischen Sound in Deinen Ohren lebendig werden lässt.

Welcome to Atari sound playground with super heroes and wizards fighting their ways through two A- and two B-levels on a 10” illustratively named Inner City Angst.

You Love Her Coz She’s Dead, yet, this “digital electro trash” band’s name hit me instantly and made me want to listen to the Duo’s EP. Elle and Jay Dead have released this little dope 10” Inner City Angst as their debut EP on Kitsuné Maison label from France. Both seem to like 1980ies computer games sounds which start each of the four tracks. They go on as a basic layer in all tracks or return constantly while the vocals by Elle and Jay, bass and drums bring the tension and emotion in.

Together pace of the tracks, the melody and vocals make you want to dance.

All in all with YOU You Love Her Coz She’s Dead and their debut 10” Inner City Angst Kitsuné Maison again features a duo that makes the specific sound of the label come alive in your ears.

Minimal, Techno und Tech House vom Feinsten, das ist für mich Camea. Die Betreiberin des Labels Clink Recordings hat gerade ihre neue EP herausgebracht. „Happy Ending“, auf dem die drei Richtungen elektronischer Musik in einer Dynamik miteinander changieren, sich überlagern, wie es für Cameas Stil prägend ist; gefällt. Bass und Snare Drum geben den grundlegenden Beat vor. Tiefe dunkle Vocals und flirrende, gurrende, zischende und klickende Sounds, zum Teil von Ansätzen melodischer Fragmente begleitet, mischen sich in kontinuierlichem Vier-Vierteltakt unter die Tracks. Das ist Techno, House Musik, bei der Du im Club, so Du noch am Rand der Tanzfläche stehst, zunächst vielleicht unbemerkt, aber unweigerlich anfängst, unaufhörlich mit den Füßen und dem Kopf im Takt mitzuwippen.

Die B-Seite enthält einen Alexi Delano Remix des zweiten Tracks der EP, „Computer Says Love“.

Finest minimal, techno and tech house, that is to me Camea.

The Clink label owner has just released her new EP. “Happy Ending” represents the typical Camea style where the three genres of electronic music interact, and overlap each other.

Base and snare drum make up the basic beat. Deep dark vocals and shimmering, cooing, sibilating as well as clicking sounds are partly accompanied by melodic fragments. They mix with the tracks by common time.

That is techno, house music which makes you move your feet and head to the beat while chilling in a club. At first you might do so unnoticeably, but yet incessantly.

B-side contains an Alexi Delano Remix of the second A-side track of the EP, “Computer Says Love”.
