W
hat is it, exactly, that inspires amateur runners and professional athletes alike to lace up, head out and crunch some miles at all times and in all weathers? Laurent, 40, is the regional director of a telecommunications firm. He first took up running just over a decade ago for purely practical reasons: it came with no time constraints, unlike going to the gym, and there was no need to invest in huge amounts of equipment. But it didn’t take him long to become a self-proclaimed running addict, with what initially started out as
one 45-minute session twice a week soon turning into 3 to 4sessions lasting 1 to 2 hours, not to mention taking part in a variety of races and trails, having even joined a local running club. "My job is highly demanding and pretty stressful. There’s a huge amount of travelling and a lot at stake...", he explains. “Running is my “me time”, when I can focus on myself. It gives me the opportunity to let off steam, think things through and basically clear my head. It makes me feel stronger and gives me the motivation to work harder. I set myself challenges and it helps me build up more

esigner Christophe Pillet has already lent his name to the Pullman Paris Eiffel Tower and the Pullman Paris La Defense. Now he's injected his ultra-vibrant style into the Pullman Paris Roissy Charles-de-Gaulle Airport, just a stone’s throw from Terminal 3. "I wanted to create a space that was real yet modern, like this spacious lobby that abounds with vegetation and is bathed in natural light," he explains. It’s also worth
noting that weary travellers will have access to a 500 m² Fit Lounge with steam bath, sauna, fitness equipement and a vast indoor pool to help them wave that jet lag goodbye. The world owes a massive thanks to Johan Golden and Henrik Elvestad. Why? Because in 2011 these two slightly zany Norwegians put a brand new spin on traditional soccer by donning huge, inflatable see-through "bubbles" that encased their heads, bodies and arms, leaving only their legs free to move. Originally intended as a bit of a joke (bumping into each other, knocking each other over and having one heck of a workout…), their exploits ended up becoming a massive YouTube hit, with everyone wanting to give it a go. Bubble soccer clubs have now started popping up all around the world in Japan, the USA, England, France, China and Taiwan to name but a few. With bubble soccer, also known as “zorb football”, you can simply have a bounce-about with friends or compete in official matches (teams of 4 to 10). Now all it needs is its own Lionel Messi to bump the sport up to the next level.

JR from street art to gallery
769,000 Instagram followers, 345,825 on Facebook, 48,902 on Twitter… These figures speak volumes about the success of JR’s work. The French artist, now based in New York, has spent years questioning our urban environment and our society with his oversized black-and-white portraits. Sixty of his pieces have recently been exhibited at the Perrotin gallery, and the artist has also embarked on a project with French fi lmmaker Agnès Varda. So can art change the world? The question might seem naïve if it weren’t for the fact that JR’s work is so generous, abundant and decompartmentalizing. This monograph is the fi rst to be solely dedicated to the artist’s work. It looks back over his career so far and examines some of his current work, as well as offering a behind-the-scenes look at his studios in Paris and New York. PULLMAN LIVERPOOL IT ROCKS IN THE DOCKS! Liverpool, the birthplace of rock’n’roll, is a vibrant hub of musical activity. There’s the Echo Arena Liverpool, which sits on the waterfront playing host to the music world’s biggest stars, and numerous musical landmarks such as the childhood homes of legends John Lennon and Paul McCartney, and Studio 2 on Parr Street - where both Coldplay and the Spice Girls recorded their many hits. Pullman has chosen this buzzing cultural city as the backdrop for the second of its UK-based hotels, located right next to the Echo Arena Liverpool, and is due to open for business on the world-famous waterfront in February 2016. Proudly straddling tradition and modernity, all the Qatari capital was missing was a metro worthy of its ambitions. It will be a case of mission accomplished come 2019, as three major underground lines – red, green and gold – serving 37 stations right across Doha will finally be unveiled. This mammoth project is set to reinvent the city and revolutionize the Qatari population’s lives, shaving 10 minutes off a journey that would have previously taken 30 by car. The stations’ cutting-edge look was the brainchild of an international team of architects, who combined contemporary ideas with influences such as the Bedouin tent. The “vaulted” style inspired by Islamic art was chosen by Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani. What’s more, this project has strong green credentials: this new mode of transport is set to slash CO2 levels by no less than107 tons.

SPOTLIGHT ON THE NEW GENERATION
T
he city of Dubai and the concept of modernity have been inextricably linked since the second half of the twentieth century - the moment when the city was taking off. Since then architecture and design d esign have been part of the DNA of this UAE mega city. From 14 to 18 March 2016, the Emiratis are preparing to host the fi fth edition of the Design Days Dubai, which according to its director, Cyril Zammit, "will celebrate the collectible design fair’s incredible legacy and commitment to supporting and nurturing local design talent. We will focus on a brand new generation of UAE-based designers." Moreover, the well-known fi rm Van Cleef and Arpels will award the Middle East Emergent Designer prize. THERE’S A WIND TREE REVOLUTION IN THE AIR
F
orget traditional wind turbines with their enormous blades demanding vast amounts of space! The brand new device developed by French start-up NewWind might just be offering us a glimpse of the energy plantations of the future. The firm’s tree-shaped wind turbine, boasting beautiful clean lines and whose green "leaves" are capable of harnessing even the slightest breeze, has recently been installed at the Ruhr Park retail centre in the heart of the German city of Bochum. This efficient and silent micro-energy source can generate 4.1 kilowatts of energy - enough to power a car park, a 1,000 m2 office block or an almost 10,000-mile journey by electric car. That’s right, energy really can be generated in an urban setting, and wind-generated energy at that! And this is just the start of this small ecological revolution that is seeing energy being produced in close proximity to the end-user, fostering the development of sustainable and eco-friendly cities. NewWind had set up wind trees in the German city of Gerlingen in January 2016 before marketing the product more widely across France and Switzerland.

Induction transfer charging is a type of technology that allows an electronic device’s battery to be recharged without the need for cables. The device in question (smartphone, tablet, smartwatch, etc.) simply needs to be equipped with a Qi wireless receiver. All the user needs to do is to place the device on top of a wireless charger and it will be automatically powered up via magnetic induction. Numerous mobile devices now come fitted with an induction receiver, but if that's not the case a Qi receiver can often be added. The Nintendo New 3DS, the Samsung Galaxy S6 and the Apple Watch have all recently adopted this kind of technology. As its popularity grows, induction transfer charging has also captured the imagination of brands such as IKEA, with the firm now retailing mass-market furniture equipped with built-in wireless chargers.

The "Plant for the Planet" program invites guests staying in many of the Pullman hotels around the world to reuse their towels so that money saved on laundry can be invested in planting trees. Since 2009, 730,000 trees have therefore been planted each year all around the world. Another ambitious program is Planet 21, which focuses on the AccorHotels 21 commitments to foster sustainable development. In Australia, for example, the Pullman at Sydney Olympic Park was specifically designed to reduce energy and water consumption by 40% and 50% respectively. In France, the Pullman Paris Tour Eiffel (see above) has its own 650m 2 garden which grows its own fruit, vegetables, flowers and herbs. It’s what you might call seeing the world through green-tinted glasses.

Made in Congo The product of a rapidly changing and newly revitalized continent, Kinshasa’s Sandrine Ébène de Zorzi (yes, "Ebony" is her real name…) is an up-and-coming designer who trained at the prestigious École Boulle in Paris. "I knew that the local exotic wood was of truly outstanding quality and that our local Congolese craftsmen were bursting with talent, so I was keen to come up with a contemporary project that would allow me to unite the two," she explains. It’s back on the designer’s home turf that her Kiti Makasi ("strong chair" in Lingala) are hand-crafted. Inspired by some of the design world’s greats, such as Eames and Prouvé, each oiled, varnished, stained or antiqued piece is totally unique.

"Sea, Wine and Sun". Three little words to sum up a massive event that gets the city of Melbourne buzzing for over a fortnight each year! During the Food & Wine Festival, the next of which will be held from 4 to 13 March 2016, the whole city becomes one huge banquet where good food and good company rule. Over 250,000 visitors flock to the event for tasting sessions and workshops, hosted by the very best wineries and chefs from both Australia and overseas. Barcelona is the world’s third most photographed city, hot on the heels of New York and Rome. Yet the tourist city we know and love looked very different back in the Sixties. Inspired by the work of William Klein, photojournalist and advertising photographer Xavier Miserachs has explored his city through a different lens, unveiling its more raw and industrial side. The black and white images capture sea-side factories, passers-by and the gaze of the Catalan people. Snapshots of life, projected onto walls and blurring the lines between reality and fiction, with particularly clever staging and a carefully compiled soundtrack instantly whisks visitors back to the Plaça Catalunya of the Sixties. The exhibition is scheduled to run until March 27 2016 at Barcelona’s MACBA in the Plaça dels Angels.
hen M is for May, in Miami it’s also for Museums! Tourists have thirty full days to make the most of this annual event that encourages them to get off their sunbeds and indulge in a little culture. Getting involved really couldn’t be easier – simply presenting some ID proving you are passing through the city will get you two-for-one admission to a number of different museums. Twenty-three different venues have signed up to be part of this rich cultural trail, including the Bass Museum of Art, the Miami Beach Botanical Garden, the Jewish Museum of Florida and the MOCA (Museum of Contemporary Art).

MARSEILLE'S MONTE CRISTO CHALLENGE
I
t was Edmond Dantès, the character made famous by Alexandre Dumas in his novel “The Count of Monte Cristo”, who inspired this one-ofa-kind sporting event, having embarked on a death-defying swi m to escape t he Château d’If. Every summer since 1999, swimmers have been f locking to the city in their thousands to tr y their luck in this open water race – locals, tourists, enthusiastic amateurs, highly trained professionals, the young a n d n o t- s o -yo u n g, we a r i n g fl ippers or swimming barefoot. Swimmers can opt to compete in one of four separate races that are organized over the course of the weekend: the main race - the 5 km Monte-Cristo Challenge, two Open Challenges covering 1 or 2 km, or the 1 km Junior Challenge, with safety always a top priority. As in previous years, the 2016 race will set off from the northernmost tip of the island on which the Château d’If stands, just opposite from the Pullman Marseille Palm Beach, and then follow the Marseille coastline as far as Grand Roucas beach on the eastern side of the city, on June 18-19. The American magazine "Saveur" unveiled the 2015 winners of its Good Taste Awards, an annual event on the culinary calendar. The "World’s Best Food City" award went to Tokyo, the city with the most Michelin stars, but the real surprise was Berlin, which was named "New Vegetarian Capital". According to the jury responsible for selecting the winner, the German city has become "the fi rst European city to see the creativity of vegetarian restaurants equal, and at times surpass, that of traditional restaurants." Berlin currently boasts over 30 vegetarian restaurants, the majority of which serve gluten-free fare cooked with local, organic ingredients.

It’s taken over a year to get to this point. "We’ve always been mad about superheroes," explain Camille, Jean-Baptiste and Matthieu, the trio in charge of the Galerie Sakura, "but we could never have begun to imagine just how passionate the artists would be about our Star Wars project." The photographers, in particular, were really fired up by the idea of working on these legendary fictional characters. Some of them had already tackled the subject matter before, such as France’s Sacha Goldberger, who has spent the past two years painstakingly transposing this entire sci-fi world onto the Flemish 16th century. Or Canada’s David Eger, who integrates Yoda, Princess Leia and Darth Vader into scenes from other famous films or photographs. In the majority of cases, however, this commission gave artists all around the world (Finland, Ukraine, Italy, Indonesia) the opportunity to work on totally new pieces. A total of 150 completed works are on show. The gallery owners are keen to point out that "despite being massive fans of the saga, the artists didn’t hesitate to take an offbeat approach to the way they depicted their heroes, resulting in some highly visual and extremely amusing pieces." A landscape far from the usual Hong Kong.

he largest of the islands, Lantau, offers travellers their very first taste of the country. As the plane begins its descent, passengers peering through porthole windows – assuming visibility is good - will be able to spot the local Disneyland’s take on “Sleeping Beauty Castle” followed by a Buddha perched on top of a mountain surrounded by lush, wild vegetation. The very observant will also catch a glimpse of some rather strange-looking stilt houses standing in the water of an inlet not far from the runway. Lantau is one of Asia’s symbolic sites dedicated to Buddhism, symbolised by the world’s largest sitting Buddha statue. Crafted from bronze and standing a staggering 34 metres high, this "Big Buddha" has been watching over the Chinese people since 1993, attracting daily crowds of pilgrims who readily clamber up the 268 steps that allow them to worship at his feet and take in the stunning views over the surrounding mountains and beaches. Just opposite, a stroll through the fragrant gardens of the Po Lin monastery, where the aroma of plants and incense permeates the air, instils an all-encompassing sense of serenity. Monks are on hand to welcome guests, inviting them to indulge in the tasty vegetarian fare served in the monastery restaurant. On the hills surrounding Ngong Ping, the Wisdom Path (a walkway lined with 38 timber columns engraved with texts from the Heart Sutra, a famous Confucian prayer) invites you to meditate whilst contemplating the South China Sea.
Peng Chau. They may be significantly smaller, but what they lack in size they easily make up for in charm and authenticity. Cheung Chau is a place where life revolves around fishing, the signs of which are everywhere you look from the moment the ferry docks – fishing boats, fish drying on crates outside fishermen’s houses or strung up in front of shops, and of course the stretch of inviting seafood restaurants lining the sea front. The island is a car-free zone, enabling visitors to take a carefree stroll along the narrow streets. Those feeling slightly more energetic can visit temples, hop on a bike or head to the beach to watch the sun go down. Every spring, Cheung Chau also hosts the traditional "Bun Festival", which locals spend all year preparing. Peng Chau inspires visitors to chill out and relax. Shrouded with an air of secrecy, this is a place that feels like a traditional village should. A place where the pace of life is dictated by the docking of ferries and punctuated by noisy games of Mahjong played out in the backrooms of tiny shops whilst the older generation, a twinkle in their eye, sit outside reminiscing about their island’s once thriving industrial past…
ISLANDS ARE A CAR-FREE ZONE, ENABLING VISITORS TO TAKE A CAREFREE STROLL ALONG THE NARROW STREETS.
More picturesque still is the stilt house village belonging to the Tanka fishing community. This is a community that perpetuates the traditions of Hong Kong’s indigenous population and is doing everything it can to resist local urban development projects, such as plans to extend the airport and to build a bridge linking Hong Kong to Macao and Zuhai. To the east of Lantau sit the islands of Cheung Chau and
Further southeast and originally a traditional Chinese fishing village, Lamma is now a refuge for those desperate to escape the urban cacophony of the centre of Hong Kong and surround themselves with vegetable patches, cosy jazz bars, beaches and underground artists’ workshops. The island exudes an overtly hippie vibe, with the multicultural population more than happy to chat with visitors about the bygone “Woodstock” years. ou are almost unrecognizable in "Steve Jobs", in a part that seemed really important to you. It was a really big deal for me to play Joanna Hoffman, one of the original members of the Macintosh team and loyal friend of Steve Jobs, because I wanted so badly to be in something that was written by Aaron Sorkin, the man behind "The Social Network", directed by Danny Boyle and with Michael Fassbender playing the lead. And it was a really big deal for me to look nothing like myself, because initially the film-makers did not think of me at all. They didn’t even send me the script. The real Joanna Hoffman is much shorter than me, she has got very dark hair, she's Eastern European... So when I heard that they were still looking for their actress, I took a selfie wearing a short dark haired wig and I sent it to the producer Scott Rudin. I went after this part just like I went after the part of Rose in "Titanic" twenty years ago... with no ego, but not too much humility either (laughter)! Michael Fassbender said he was intimidated by you on set. He is so pathetic (laughter). Don’t believe him. I was intimidated. I imagined he would be quite weird and Methody, a little bit the way you imagine Daniel Day Lewis might be even though I don't know what he is like as an actor at all. How was he to work with? Michael is like me. We are two kids who grew up in families who had very little money, we both worked part-time jobs in pubs while taking acting classes, we are cut from the same cloth, just like our characters have the same sensibility in the film. That was very fortunate, because the shoot was exhausting. "Steve Jobs" is not a conventional biopic, it is more like a Shakespearean play split into three acts, we had to learn pages and pages of complex technical dialogue in exact chronological order, and, for me, with a Polish-Armenian accent. But I also felt as if I was in a theater troupe, and a lot of that was thanks to Michael Fassbender. I adore him. I have never seen such professional behavior by an actor in my whole life. I hope Leonardo DiCaprio will forgive me for saying that.

What is your method when you work? I believe in notes. My scripts are covered with them. Notes on paper, not on my iPhone. I am a technophobe. I will break a machine just by picking it up! For "Steve Jobs", I also spent lots of time with the real and wonderful Joanna Hoffman. You have more projects than ever, including a movie where you will portray the free-spirited Lee Miller, we are going to see you in t wo films shot in Australia, "The Dressmaker" and "Triple 9"... I can tell you about "The Dressmaker", set in 1950s Australia: I play Tilly, who returns from Paris to her tiny hometown with her Singer sewing machine, to right wrongs from her past. It's almost a spaghetti western! I was lucky that Australian director Jocelyn Moorhouse asked me to play the part, as I felt I was revisiting territory from where I was in my twenties. This uncompromised English girl who packs up and goes to another country to do Hideous Kinky and Holy Smoke right in the aftermath of "Titanic".

In "Triple 9", I am a demonic Russian-Israeli mafia vamp! Lancôme, the red carpets... Do you enjoy the glamour? When doing "The Dressmaker", I realized I did have quite a lot of historical knowledge

You travel so much, what do you do to look so glowing? I adore you for that (laughter). I live with my family – my three children: Mia who is 15, Joe 11, Bear who is still a baby and my husband - in England by the ocean. The fresh clean air makes a difference... Otherwise, everything in moderation. I do drink lots of water because I take planes so often, but I don't believe in strange elimination diets. Whenever I say I am not going to drink alcohol for a month, the first thing I do is go and have a glass of rosé. You recently turned forty... ...And I’ve never been happier! My family is a source of joy, my appetite for acting is even bigger than when I started in Peter Jackson’s "Heavenly Creatures" at 17! Ageing needs acceptance. I believe that being positive is the best beauty secret. Life is short, we need to make the most of it with a smile!

A business that’s still topping the "Pops"!
RECENTLY, A LOT OF EXHIBITIONS AROUND THE WORLD ARE PAYING TRIBUTE TO THE POPE OF POP ART. IT MAY BE NEARLY 30 YEARS SINCE HE DREW HIS LAST BREATH, BUT TODAY THE ARTIST’S WORK IS FLYING OFF SHELVES IN MUSEUM SHOPS, FASHION OUTLETS AND GADGET STORES FASTER THAN EVER BEFORE. TEXT RITA G. YACOUT
“Making money is an art, and working is an art, and good business is the best kind of art!” Andy Warhol, the man who’s still making money 28 years after his death, really couldn’t have put it much better. With a Pennsylvanian museum glorifying his achievements, auction revenues as lucrative as ever, designer pieces featuring his prints and millions of spin-off products inspired by his works, the everstylish Warhol is still decidedly in vogue.

But the AWF generates just as much money as it hands out. Working with Christie’s New York, the Foundation regularly auctions off works from its extensive Warhol collection, a particularly lucrative money-spinner that generated 17 million dollars in 2012. The Foundation also enjoys sole ownership of the copyright to Warhol images – images once deemed avantgarde, now considered timeless and still as popular as ever. An ever-increasing number of designers, leading brands and manufactures are showing an interest in the Pop Art pioneer’s works, sometimes pushing the boundaries of good taste. “Over the past decade, we have received ten major industry awards for the excellence of our licensing agreements, and have worked with numerous bigname brands such as Dior, Comme des Garçons, Absolut Vodka, Dom Pérignon, Perrier, Pepe Jeans London and Converse, to name but a few,” explains Hermann Dayton, who adds that “the utmost care is nonetheless taken to protect the artist’s image.” Alongside designer pieces, Warhol’s work also features on a whole host of spin-off products, notably the kind that fill the shelves in museum souvenir shops. Pascale Brun d’Arre is the manager of the book and souvenir shop at the Museum of

One sole beneficiary is responsible for managing these precious assets: the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts in New York. “It was one of the artist’s dying wishes,” explains New York artist Michael Hermann Dayton, Director of Licensing at the Foundation. “His will dictated that his entire estate, with the exception of a few modest legacies to family members, should be used to create a foundation dedicated to the advancement of the visual arts.” Set up on the artist’s death in 1987, the Foundation has since been recognized as one of the American contemporary art world’s most influential patrons, awarding almost 250 million dollars’ worth of grants to a variety of beneficiaries, ranging from up-and-coming artists to art institutions.

But she also works as an artist, reinterpreting existing Warhol works for items that are created for a specific exhibition. “I work with the curators, with the artists if they are still alive, and with the beneficiaries whenever possible… For this exhibition, the Warhol Foundation chose to work with ADAGP (the French artists’ rights society – Société des Auteurs dans les Arts Graphiques et Plastiques). Through them the Foundation issued its long list of demands, which focused on ensuring that copyright was clearly visible on each piece.” Taking her inspiration from the exhibited works, the artist came up with five unique pieces, including a bag, tray, notebook and magnet, which will be on sale until February 2016. “My main objective is to stay true to the artist’s vision and simply adapt his work to everyday objects. These aren’t display pieces with exorbitant price-tags – after all, we want them to sell.” It’s certainly an attitude that Warhol would have appreciated. “I started as a commercial artist, and I want to finish as a business artist,” he once said with great foresight.

ew York, 1838: Pharmacist Dr. Galen Hunter opened the doors of the Village Apothecary Shop in Greenwich Village, selling in-house lotions and potions to treat a variety of ailments. Fast-forward to 1880, and Clarence Otis Bigelow, one of the store’s employees, becomes the owner and gives the shop its current name. New York, 2015: The current owner, Ian Ginsberg, has since transformed C.O. Bigelow into an Aladdin’s cave for beauty addicts, and the firm’s products now line the shelves of some of the world’s most well-regarded stores – Colette in Paris, Liberty in London, Isetan and Hankyu in Tokyo… Those two dates stands like bookends for a 177-year success story, with America’s oldest apothecary playing the starring role. In 1902 the Bigelow building was built on New York’s buzzing Sixth Avenue, the first outward sign of success. Featuring the red brick and arches so characteristic of the late Victorian period, it has since become one of the Big Apple’s most recognizable historic landmarks. Over the years, well-known faces such as Mark Twain and Eleanor Roosevelt visited the store, their names featuring on the endless stacks of carefully preserved ledgers.

T
he current owners of this legendary institution are direct descendants of William Ginsberg, who bought the business in 1939 after the Great Depression. Like so many other immigrants fleeing Eastern Europe, he arrived in New York at the tender age of 16, initially finding employment as a tailor and taking evening classes to retrain as a chemist. In the 1950s, C.O. Bigelow was run as a family business, with uncles, cousins and nieces all doing stints behind the counter. As in villages the world over, the apothecary became a natural meeting place. Locals would stop to chat whilst sipping a drink at the soda fountain counter, akin to an old-style bistro. Having originally opened in the 1920s, the soda fountain’s closure in 1984 was

much lamented by Village Voice magazine, another New York institution. The Ginsbergs’ other great love was music. Growing up in 1950s Manhattan, Jerry, William’s son, had jazz running through his veins. His parents, however, forced him to train as a pharmacist to keep the business in the family. History was to repeat itself a few decades later with his own son, Ian, who grew up in the 70s and 80s when Greenwich Village was the epicentre of the booming New York music scene. A talented drummer, he spent his whole childhood rubbing shoulders with his idols at Bigelow… before eventually training as a pharmacist. He joined his father’s business in 1985, eventually taking the helm in 1996. He stood firm against buyout offers from large cosmetic firms and decided to focus on premium beauty products, compiling his own

carefully selected range that he sourced from around the world. Ian has a preference for brands that share the same multi-generational heritage as his own: the Florentine Martelli family (Proraso shaving products, Marvis toothpaste), and more recently, Turkish firm Gulsha with its ultra-pure rosewater…

n 2003, C.O. Bigelow launched an in-house cosmetics and skincare range in partnership with Limited Brands (Bath and Body Works). A number of the products were inspired by some of the pharmacy's oldest formulas, such as the Lemon Body Cream, whose recipe dates back to 1870. Combining vintage logos and retro packaging with natural essences and cutting-edge technology, this delicate, plant-based range simply flew off the shelves. Many of C.O. Bigelow’s clients are ordinary people, but plenty of celebrities are known to frequent the store, including Calvin Klein, Liv Tyler, Diane von

Furstenberg, Elvis Costello, Susan Sarandon and Sarah Jessica Parker…Having always gone to great lengths to protect his famous clients’ privacy, Ian remembers one longstanding regular with great affection: Lou Reed, a legend of New York’s rock scene and the Village, where he lived until he died. “He was an angry man. But also extremely loyal. He loved coming in here.” Jumping from the past to the future, Ginsberg, the “XXIst century apothecary”, as he likes to call himself, is a man with his own ideas. “The health and beauty business is radically changing. It’s becoming increasingly technical, expensive and impersonal. But we intend to keep on swimming against the tide.” Today the Ginsbergs continue to have fun as a family, be it at Bigelow or pumping out rock ’n’ roll. Ian was eventually forced to give his drum kit to his youngest son, deciding to try his hand at the guitar instead… His eldest son Alec, a singer and guitarist, is currently finishing his pharmacy degree: the 4th generation of Ginsbergs is already waiting in the wings. Now they just need to keep hitting the right notes.

Born in 1989, Louisa Gagliardi studied art at the University of Art and Design in Lausanne. Thrust into the limelight when she won the 2014 Swiss Design Award, she then caught the eye of big-name brands such as Kenzo, Baccarat and Hublot watches. In early 2015, she decided to base herself in Zurich. Louisa photographs objects, then digitally manipulates the image to produce vibrant abstract interpretations. Drawing inspiration from architecture and design, she propels everyday life into a fourth dimension that is very much her own, imbued with endless possibilities. The "Our World = Your Playground" competition, launched by Pullman in partnership with design magazine Wallpaper, in a nod to the tradition of hotel patronage, "had my name written all over it" admits the artist, who fell in love with the project from the start. And she was, indeed, to end up becoming the first ever artist-in-residence at the Pullman London St Pancras. Back in August 2015, Louisa spent seven intense days
locked away in a Pullman prestige suite. “I breathed, ate, slept and lived inside my project. The hotel was a real treasure trove,” she enthuses, particularly inspired by all the iconic miniatures that travellers love to take home, such as tiny bottles of shampoo and pocketsized sewing kits. Just like Alice, she took these items through the looking glass, blowing them up to gigantic proportions to create a surrealistic, pop-esque vibe. Then Louisa packed her bags once again. Heading first to the Venice Biennale followed by New York and Dublin, she then went to Brussels for an exhibition of her work, followed by Paris for a six-month residency. Louisa is extremely nomadic, whilst remaining true to her roots. She draws strength from the Valaisan mountains of her childhood and the values the locals hold dear: loyalty, simplicity and courage. “It takes determination and a ‘no limits’ attitude to leave the valley and see the world,” she remarks with a smile.

hat is it, exactly, that inspires amateur runners and professional athletes alike to lace up, head out and crunch some miles at all times and in all weathers? Laurent, 40, is the regional director of a telecommunications firm. He first took up running just over a decade ago for purely practical reasons: it came with no time constraints, unlike going to the gym, and there was no need to invest in huge amounts of equipment. But it didn’t take him long to become a self-proclaimed running addict, with what initially started out as

one 45-minute session twice a week soon turning into 3 to 4 sessions lasting 1 to 2 hours, not to mention taking part in a variety of races and trails, having even joined a local running club. "My job is highly demanding and pretty stressful. There’s a huge amount of travelling and a lot at stake...", he explains. “Running is my “me time”, when I can focus on myself. It gives me the opportunity to let off steam, think things through and basically clear my head. It makes me feel stronger and gives me the motivation to work harder.

I set myself challenges and it helps me build up more endurance than your average person, which is extremely useful in my work!” According to Dr Benjamin Laffourcade, a specialist at Parisian sports clinic l'Institut Coeur Effort Santé, the sense of well-being that running seems to bring is far from being just an illusion. “As with all physical activities that are approached in an intelligent fashion, running stimulates the secretion and diffusion of hormones. As the weeks go by, these feel-good hormones start having a mechanical effect on the body, reducing nervous tension and boosting physical well-being”. What’s more, "for those with no underlying joint issues, running improves the quality of not only the cartilage but of the bones, muscles and tendons, too. Above and beyond these mechanical benefits, there are also cardiovascular benefits: improved cardio-vascular and respiratory function. Furthermore, numerous studies have shown that regular physical activity can help protect against a certain number of cancers, notably those that are hormone-induced, and certain neurodegenerative illnesses such as Parkinson’s disease or Alzheimer’s.” Certain rules of hygiene, nutrition and hydration must nonetheless be followed in order to enjoy a healthy and effective run. Dr Laffourcade advises against running after 7pm, for example, as it may be counterproductive to sleep. He also explains that early-morning exercisers should take care when running on an empty stomach, as there is a risk of hypoglycaemia. According to sports nutrition dietitian Nicolas Aubineau, hydration is just as important as diet as far as runners are concerned: "Runners generally need a normal intake of lipids and proteins, and a higher intake of carbohydrates to support the demands of physical activity. But a range of different diets are perfectly suited to runners, bearing in mind that each individual is unique.” he explains. “In terms of hydration, good hydration levels should be maintained throughout the day. An intake of 1.5 litres per day should generally be considered
the minimum, to be increased in the event of prolonged or intense physical activity or if the weather is particularly hot. As a general rule, whilst running, you should be aiming for an intake of 100 to 150ml (approximately 1 to 2 sips) every 10 minutes.” Well prepared, well equipped and well hydrated, the runner is now in the starting blocks, all geared up to get the most out of his run, just like our running addict Laurent. In 2015, he has already clocked up over 870 miles on his pedometer! That comes as no great surprise, as Laurent never stops running: after work, during business trips and even whilst on holiday “I simply have to go for a run, no matter where I am! When I’m going away, I even pick my hotel according to potential running routes, or at worst, in the middle of winter, I look for places with a gym and treadmill!” Filipe Vasconcelos, manager of the Spa and Fitness Centre at the Pullman Barcelona Skipper, sees people like Laurent coming through the door all year round. "Barcelona is a city that is overflowing with running enthusiasts, so our guests really feel at home! We generally offer them a choice of four different routes ranging from 1.2 to 2.2 miles long, giving them the opportunity to take in the coastline and even the historic city centre as they run”, he explains. If the running bug hasn’t bitten you hard enough (yet) to make you want to run all year round, there is still one crucial element on which you need to work: motivation. Some spur themselves on by sharing their sporting achievements via apps such as Sport Trackers or Strava Running, which use social networking sites to share and compare your endurance with other runners. A tall, slim, white-bearded figure dressed in a crisp blue shirt and small-checked wool jacket, bright eyes sparkling behind steel-rimmed frames: Renzo Piano. At 78, the celebrated architect has never been busier. "Do you ever plan to retire?" we ask with an impish smile. "Yes, but only when I stop enjoying doing

what I do. Not before!" Push his own boundaries, push all the boundaries is probably the creed by which Renzo Piano lives, the very life force that flows through his architectural creations. The Piano Method, the exhibition he is here to inaugurate, does not set out to be a retrospective celebration of half a century’s work, but rather "a glimpse behind the scenes that brings the backstage team effort into the public spotlight.” Visitors are, indeed, likely to be surprised by the overtly simple staging. "I’VE ALWAYS PREFERRED LIGHTNESS TO WEIGHTLESSNESS" From Ne w York’s Wh it ney Museum of American Art to the Niarchos Foundation in Athens, London’s Shard and Entebbe Hospital in Uganda, what common thread runs through the fifteen projects showcased at the exhibition? "Difference," explains Renzo Piano. "Each one bears no resemblance to the others. Each one is a brand new adventure, and that’s what underpins all our work." The Piano method, much like Picasso’s, is all about moving freely from one style to another rather than remaining confined to just one, something the maestro achieves by working in conjunction with an extensive team of 130 architects of all nationalities: Lebanese, Dutch, Italian, French and Japanese to name but a few. Each time a new project is launched, a hand-picked team is put together with the kind of precision generally reserved for major expeditions. Decisions are driven by where the building will be located and how it will be used, with each project resembling a massive jigsaw puzzle whose pieces need to first be designed and then assembled in turn. Engineers and landscape gardeners also play their part, with the original drawings serving as a simple starting point and the project notably taking shape as the numerous models are produced.

Steel, glass, solid stone and soil : Renzo Piano, born into a family of builders, enjoys experimenting with materials of all kinds. In Noumea, nestling between ocean and lagoon, he has erected basket-like woven cases crafted from the palest of metals and stretching more than 20 metres into the sky to house exhibition buildings. In Paris, amidst a cluster of historic properties, he has built a billowing glass-clad roof resembling the shell of a giant armadillo. In San Francisco and Ronchamp, meanwhile, he has chosen to adopt a very different approach, hiding his work away beneath vast green roofs that blend seamlessly into their surroundings.

"To succeed as an architect, I believe you need to be an engineer at least as much as an artist" explains the man who initially trained under the illustrious Jean Prouvé. Renzo Piano is the design brain behind no less than sixteen museums in some of the world’s biggest cities, a laureate of the Pritzker Prize (nicknamed the Nobel Prize for Architecture) and was made a Senator for Life of the Italian Republic two years ago, yet he continues to shun the spotlight. At the Parisian exhibition currently showcasing his work, he chose not to star in the videos that are used to present each project, preferring to leave that to his "partners”, – his firm’s key associates. “He may boast an international reputation, but he’s nonetheless delightfully modest" says Sister Brigitte de Singly, abbess of the Poor Clares order in Ronchamp, whose convent he cleverly designed to sit alongside a famous 1950s Le Corbusier chapel. "What he created for us”, she adds, “is a celebration of the invisible. It’s hidden away in the Ronchamp hillside yet flooded with natural light thanks to huge bay windows that overlook the neighbouring forest." Could light and air be the common themes that run through Piano’s work? She’s got the ancestral knowledge of many generations running through her veins, she was introduced to calligraphy and painting at an early age by her artist grandfather and architect father and she’s now married to a Frenchman (and not just any old Frenchman: Guillaume Brochard, CEO of Chinese jewellery firm Qeelin, owned by luxury giant Kering). Today Jiang’s self-appointed mission is to revive the art of traditional Chinese craftsmanship whilst giving it a 21st century twist. A different kind of “Made in China”. All under the distinguished patronage of Maison Hermès, which currently holds a 90% share in her business. "Our core positioning is not to deliver luxury, but to deliver excellence", she explains: "excellence of expertise, with every piece handcrafted by master craftsmen. Design excellence, too, as what we are striving to achieve is contemporary Chinese design. We want to promote an art of living." Porcelain, clothing, jewellery, leather goods, furniture and decorative pieces all share the same spark of inspiration: the tea ceremony.
Shang Xia conveys the Taoist concept of yin and yang, expressing the philosophy of harmony. "In our culture, there is no black or white, only grey: tradition isn’t in contradiction or conflict with everything modern and high-tech – it’s just a case of striking the right balance," explains Jiang. Shang Xia is in no great rush to start turning a profit. Instead, Jiang has spent the past five years fine-tuning the brand’s DNA, winning her the "Harmony Talent" award at France’s 2012 Luxury & Creation Talent Awards and the “Breakthrough Woman of the Year” award at the 2012 ELLE China Style Awards. She has also been made a Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres in recognition of her contribution to cultural exchange between China and France. After Shanghai came Beijing and Paris, with 2013 marking the opening of a brand new boutique in the French capital’s rue de Sèvres. The brand’s refined, timeless essence now also pervades its more recent fl agship store, the three-fl oor "Maison Shang Xia", housed in a colonial building in the heart of Shanghai’s French Concession.

ou’ve just arrived in Paris, both to enjoy the work-free days with family and to spend time at your Shang Xia store in rue de Sèvres. Are you constantly between two countries, constantly travelling? I spend a third of the year on the road, but the majority of the time I’m in China. My husband is French, and we have two different "basecamps" – an apartment in Shanghai and another in Paris. To be honest, the nomadic lifestyle is the one we’re both most comfortable with. It’s a basic notion, and something we’re attempting to instil in our children. We have five of them altogether. We head back to France in the winter and summer so they can nurture their European roots, but above all we are keen to ensure they grow up perfectly trilingual, speaking Chinese, French and English… Three languages that will allow them to live nomadic lifestyles themselves. It’s the way forward!

Why do you travel so much? I travel all over China v isit in g c ra f t s m e n whose workshops are located in the most far-flung provinces, but also meeting museum curators and Fine Arts professors. My travels Jiang Qiong Er help fuel my vision and provide inspiration for my other baby – Maison Shang Xia. A lot of my travelling is work-related. Each time I’m in a Chinese town or village, I’m hungry to find out absolutely everything I can about it: the history of the region, day-today life, local culture. People often say that travel broadens the mind, but I believe it also shapes your taste. And my intention is to bring the very essence of this Chinese art of living to the world stage.
For me, it’s the perfect time to come up with new ideas. In the aeroplane, at the airport or in the car, I often make sketches and jot down ideas for new collections. When you’re a long way away from your usual surroundings, you have a tendency to look at things with a fresh pair of eyes. Yet another benefit of being nomadic! How is your brand Shang Xia perceived by Chinese consumers? Over the past five years, certain Chinese consumers have gradually started to drift back to their cultural roots. And that includes a lot of young people, even if they still enjoy buying, consuming Western-made luxury. They feel comfortable surrounded by traditions, by the art of tea, incense, meditation… As you know, Shang Xia is closely affiliated with the world of tea. We regularly organize tea ceremonies led by tea masters, focusing on flavour, scent and simply enjoying the magic of the moment…. And in our Chinese stores, 80% of our customers are Chinese, which itself speaks volumes.

Don’t you find that being nomadic can be a rather solitary existence? Goodness, no! Like I said, for me travelling is above all an opportunity to meet new people. But you’re right in that it can also mean spending time alone with yourself.

That’s where I met my husband! And in Shanghai? The museum in People’s Square. Primarily because my dad was the building’s architect, but also because of the stunning collections it houses. It’s another journey, one through time, rediscovering how jade, stoneware, lacquer, ceramics and bronze have inspired our craftsmen over the course of many dynasties, resulting in some amazing pieces. Aliza Jabès, you are CEO of Nuxe, a frequent-flyer, a glamourous Parisian... And therefore a woman of expertise! What is your specific beauty and health routine when travelling, on the plane and after landing? First of all, I always choose comfor table clothes, such as sneakers and jeans. No stilettos on board! As soon as I’m on the plane, I set my watch to the local time on arrival. I like to be immediately in full immersion. I tie back my long hair with an elastic band. I always have a 30ml tube of cream to moisturize my face and hands, to prevent the drying effect of air conditioning. I lather my hands with cream every two hours. During the flight, I drink water to hydrate, but not too much, because it can make you swell. And I have a light meal, but also bring dried fruits with me. Before landing, I put a drop of Prodigieux ® eye-contour under my eyes. Its decongestioning effect is great for puffy eyes. I also 72

Do you have a role model for travelling in style? Grace Kelly, definitely. A symbol of elegance, ultimately chic under any circumstance, particulary when she was travelling. Finally, could you tell us about your most memorable beauty experience while travelling? Any routines you discovered and have used ever since? On my last trip to Asia, I discovered balinese massages and the art of yoga. That was indeed memorable. I practice it regularly ever since. I have also learnt, from my many trips to Asia, the art of drinking hot water : it is known to hydrate and detoxify your body. In the morning I have hot water with a few drops of lemon, fresh mint, or fresh ginger. During the day, I like to drink hot water with a spoon of honey. It purifies my body from inside.

With Steve McQueen in the driving seat, it bounced its way through the bumpy streets of San Francisco for the movie "Bullitt". But it has never been formally offered for sale within the French market. Until now, s

It has been fifty years in the waiting. Five long decades during which its only appearances on French soil were via the silver screen.
that is. An official import of sixth generation Mustangs, proudly flaunting their famous pony, are set to grace French roads as of this year. An event that has inspired five artists to come up with their very own take on the legend of the highways. Tattoo artists from l’Encrerie have emblazoned the American coupé with white motifs that sit against a plain grey background, resembling Maori symbols, Aboriginal tattoos. Symbols that evoke freedom as far as the two designers are concerned, for whom the "Stang," as it’s referred to by fans, is first and foremost an invitation to explore. Photographer Mathieu Cesar, meanwhile, uses two non-colours – black and white – to evoke not only the car’s sporty nature but also its light and dark sides, its yin and yang, the contrast "between power and imagination", explains the artist. For stylist Alexandre Vauthier, however, the Mustang symbolizes understated chic, "a balance between speed, line, design and noble materials", to cite his own defi nition. His version of the car is primarily black embellished with simple gold trim. In the hands of designer Noé Duchaufour-Lawrance, the Ford coupé really comes into its own. The design wrapped around its bodywork evokes a powerful and spirited skeleton, seemingly offering a peek beneath the skin of this veritable muscle car that can reach speeds of 421 hp. Finally, there’s photographer and filmmaker Thomas Lélu, who associates the Mustang with the female shape, electing to adopt the erotic codes of the ’70s and ’80s when French lads’ mag "Lui" was in its heyday. The face of a model, captured in the style of the day, gazes up from the iconic long bonnet, inviting the driver to take his place at the wheel of one of the most sensual cars to have hit French tarmac for the past fifty years. ●

Their electric driving range (generally limited to 62 miles) is consequently not a problem. Nor is the phenomenal lack of power when accelerating. That’s why legendary motorcycle brand Harley-Davidson has taken the daring step of designing a fully electric motorbike. Going by the name of the LiveWire, the creation is currently just a prototype but should hit the market by 2020. Somewhat unsurprisingly, the bike doesn’t reproduce the instantly recognizable roar of your usual made-in-Milwaukee engine, but more of a high-pitched whistle. That, however, is the only thing that sets it apart from any other Harley. In terms of acceleration, it performs far better than its combustionengined counterparts, going from 0 to 62mph in just 4 seconds – a performance worthy of a Lamborghini. At the other end of the scale, the BMW C-Evolution scooter is no speed demon, but it is already available on the market and boasts outstanding agility for an urban two-wheeler. This perfectly balanced vehicle has a driving range of 62 miles, which is more than adequate for everyday use, and offers the ideal way of getting around a congested city.

ntil today, anyone looking to purchase a compact premium car basically had two choices: German or German. The Mercedes A-Class, BMW 1 Series and Audi A3 are, without question, all perfectly manufactured, but also perfectly mainstream. But now there’s another alternative. Well, kind of. The perfectly astonishing Infiniti Q30 actually shares the same mechanics as the so-called "small" Mercedes. But unlike its German counterpart, the brand new Japanese creation (Infiniti is Nissan’s luxury division) flaunts a daringly angular design reminiscent of Bilbao’s Guggenheim museum, with doors and bonnet all succumbing to the sweeping ridges and ribs. Fortunately, the Q30 remains beautifully harmonious both inside and out, with an exceptional level of comfort even helping us forget the somewhat tortured design. Its suspension comes close to striking the perfect compromise, combining easy handling with good road-holding abilities. As for its Mercedes engines, meanwhile, the 109 hp diesel option will win the hearts of the family man, whilst the 211 hp petrol engine will suit those looking for a more sporty drive. This city car has plenty going for it and still remains relatively unknown in Europe, despite already enjoying substantial fame across both Asia and Northern America.

ALFA ROMEO MUSEUM FULL SPEED AHEAD
S
ome places ju s t seem to have been a rou nd forever. The Alfa Romeo museum is one of them, despite only having opened its doors in 2015, 105 years after the brand was first launched. Prior to that, one of the Italian car industry’s most legendary manufacturers – a firm that has incarnated la bella mechanica since 1910 – prefer red to keep its most iconic creations away from pr ying eyes, from the Alfetta 159, driven to Formula 1 victory by Fangio, to the sensational 8C. Admittedly, the most hardened tifosi could arm themselves with an appointment and then patiently wait to catch a glimpse of their metallic idols in the bowels of the Arese, the original manufacturing plant, just a stone’s throw from Milan. But since 2009, even superfans were unable to get their hands on a backstage pass. A six-year closure for renovations was a long time to have to wait. But that wait was worth every second, as fans have now been given free reign of three full f loors of the Museo, enabling them to take in its delights at will. Each floor turns the spotlight on a specific theme, beginning with a chronological walk-through of some of the brand’s most iconic motors, then moving on to style and design, and culminating on the top floor with speed (of course!). Whilst perusing the various models designed by the maestri dello stile (masters of style), visitors will also discover the many, and at times dramatic, tales that have shaped the Milanese manufacturer’s past. That of the Quadrifoglio, for example, the four-leaf clover sitting against a plain white square that Alfa drivers believed brought them luck. The emblem was, however, to be changed forever when Ugo Sivocci died at the wheel of a Quadrifoglio-less Alfa whilst practising for the 1923 Monza Grand Prix. As the pre-war racing world lost one of its four musketeers, the square lost one of its corners, and the most powerful Alfas were instead embellished with a clover set against a triangle – a tradition that continues to this day. A lthough cities only cover a mere 2% of the planet’s surface, they are already home to 50% of the world’s population. By 2050, when that percentage will have risen still further to 70%, our cities will be using 75% of all energy generated as well as being responsible for 80% of all CO² emissions. Energy and pollution aren’t the only areas demanding attention – the lengthy list also includes health systems, transport, waste management, property, social cohesion and living together… There’s no doubt about it, managing urban areas has become one of the major development challenges of the XXIst century!

It was back in 2005, when Bill Clinton and his foundation issued a challenge to IT giant Cisco, that the “Smart City” concept was born. Things have come a long way since then, and today there is not a single city that can afford to ignore the challenges posed by rampant urbanization, the increasing shortage of fossil fuels, global warming and social divisions, not to mention the budgetary constraints forcing local authorities to constantly do more with less. Unique cities, unique challenges There is no specific blueprint, no magic recipe for becoming a Smart City. It is up to each individual city to identify its own priorities based on its current situation and goals. Scandinavian countries, for example, have chosen to focus on social and environmental issues, rolling-out ambitious plans targeting carbon neutrality. Berlin has placed the emphasis on well-being: in the space of just a few years, the German capital has become a cultural metropolis, attracting people from all over Europe by championing urban creativity and quality of life. In Japan and England, attempts are being made to resolve the demographic problem by building innovative underwater cities or creating entire floating districts like the one on the Thames. Smart traffic lights that change to green or red depending on the density of traffic have been introduced in the Chinese city of Wuxi, whilst London and Stockholm have both rolled out a congestion charge system to reduce both traffic and pollution. Barcelona, meanwhile, has introduced smart refuse bins to optimize refuse collection, whilst Nice and Singapore both have smart street lights that automatically adjust their brightness depending on how dark it is. Then there are the green roofs that have started to appear all over New York and Montreal … Projects are popping up wherever you look all around the world.
disadvantaged neighbourhoods and generate less air and noise pollution. Electric vehicles and cycle lanes are being introduced, cities are being densified to curb the kind of urban sprawl that triggers an increase in the number of cars and the distances needed to be covered, local shops are being reopened, efforts are being made to bring the workplace and home closer together to put an end to the principle of division by business sector thereby tackling ghettoization… All these initiatives are small pieces in a much bigger picture, underpinned by a series of measures that profoundly transform the city. An increasing number of initiatives are also being introduced to target energy use, but as is the case with transport, the real revolution will come in the form of real-time data processing. Interactive cities Smart Cities are, indeed, often associated with digital technology, and with good reason. Pavements, cameras, street lights, streets, homes… the city of the future is peppered with sensors collecting an avalanche of information that is analysed in real-time by the kind of IT systems we associate with the Big Data phenomenon. It consequently becomes far easier to anticipate and prevent the formation of a traffic jam by adjusting the traffic lights, i ndicat i ng alter nat ive routes or making changes to public transport – something that already happens in both London and Singapore, for example. Similarly, installing smart electric meters, capable of providing real-time energy-use readings for every single household, should help energy operators fine-tune their electricity production, a concept known as the “Smart Grid”.

This is a key democratic issue, with the Smart City raising questions about citizens’ right to privacy. Questions that currently remain largely unanswered.

THE "RUDOLF GIFFINGER"RANKINGS There are numerous systems in place to rank the most advanced Smart Cities, although none of the rankings are truly "official" d u e to a l a c k o f s t a n d a rd s . Scientists from Vienna Technical U n i v e r s i t y (A u s t r i a) h a v e nonetheless attempted to put to g e t h e r a s c o r i n g s y s te m , wo r k i n g i n co n j u n c ti o n with the U niversit y of Ljubljana (Slovenia) and Delft Technical U n i v e r s i t y ( N e t h e r l a n d s) . Named "Rudolf Giffinger" (after the project leader), the rankings are based on six criteria: 1. At the request of the city of Paris, French engineering firm Setec Bâtiment and Belgian architect Vincent Callebaut have come up with a truly extraordinary project for the City of Light. The city is transformed, swathed in blankets of green and adorned with streamlined high-rise buildings, all specifically designed to address tomorrow’s needs: lack of space, climate change, etc.

Designed to accommodate 40,000 people, this "zero-carbon" city produces no non-recyclable waste and even has its sights set on producing renewable energy.

What kind of musical training did you both have? Pierre-Alain : Our training was quite varied. I mainly studied electronic music, whist Edouard focused mostly on organic instruments (the piano and guitar…). Then we both spent hours on end shut away on our own in our rooms, trying things out and learning as we went. Discovering how things work for yourself is absolutely vital it helps you find your own way. Where did your group, Sauvage, meaning “wild”, get its name? We wanted a simple name, and the one we chose still suits us today. When we first started out, we tended to approach problems in a pretty chaotic way, but our current way of working is slightly less wild than it used to be. I guess now we just have a different kind of wildness. What I like about this term is its ambivalence: when a wild person or animal is staring you in the eyes, you never really know what they’re actually thinking. In the same way, I like our tracks to be layered with contradictory emotions. I’m fascinated by this concept of warm yet cold, of hovering between one thing and another. How does your creative duo work? Our personalities are pretty complementary. In terms of our music, I try to write the track from start to fi nish, and then Edouard enriches the arrangement with all the instruments he plays. He fleshes out the sound.

You’ve written the lyrics and music for a bespoke track for the Pullman brand, that can be heard in the hotels or when room service is called. How did this collaboration come about? I got an e-mail asking me if I was interested. Pullman were looking for a track on the theme of travel and discovery – a theme that pretty much reflects our approach to music. It was really weird to have a brief as the starting point, but in the end I found that the music flowed quite naturally. It’s a track that’s all about simplicity.
Discovering how things work for yourself is absolutely vital - it helps you find your own way...
When you listen to the track, what images does it conjure up in your head? I like to picture a travelator. You close your eyes and you can feel yourself gliding across the floor, quite serenely. It’s an opportunity to just let go… How do you like to travel? I like arriving somewhere and then hiring a car, which gives me as much freedom as possible and allows me to stop off whenever and wherever the mood takes. I enjoy embarking on an adventure and not necessarily knowing where, when or with whom I’m going to end up sleeping that night. W hat are your thoughts on dematerialized music, such as it exists today? For a while I just followed the crowd, because at the end of the day we don’t have much control over this new way of consuming music. I no longer have any CDs at home, nor any DVDs for that matter. It certainly makes moving much easier. Now, though, lots of vinyls are starting to appear again, like little totems popping up to materialize the very lifeblood of sound. I’m probably going to invest in a vinyl turntable some time soon. Maybe in 30 years’ time we’ll all have gone back to “physical” music. one are the days when business travel was synonymous with inconvenience, delay, sacrifice and reorganisation. Today, the air miles are cheerfully clocked-up while the old restrictions fade away… People no longer leave, they simply move, taking their own “little world” with them in a few precious square centimetres of screen. T h e numb e r o f b usin e s s travellers is, indeed, constantly on the rise (with business travel up 3% between 2013 and 2014 according to a survey conducted by travel agency 3Mundi), and the average business traveller’s profile is becoming increasingly similar to that of a senior executive (a 30% match), who readily admits being “hyper-connected”: 23% of global travellers, including 28% of Americans and 19% of Canadians, say this is a term that applies to them.

Another trait that characterises this new type of traveller is the tendency to "blur", meaning they have the subtle ability to intertwine their private and professional lives, notably by remaining permanently connected for both. The world champions of this brand new sport are the Chinese at 79%, and the Brazilians at 71%, compared to just 60% in the other countries studied. Today’s traveller no longer has to choose between duty and pleasure, business and leisure. With this in mind, he or she expects a hotel to be both a cosy extension of home and a functional annex of the office. "Performance and pleasure are no longer mutually exclusive. When staying in our establishments, guests want to have access to a unique array of services both when working and relaxing,” comments Xavier Louyot, Senior Vice-President Marketing EMEA.
BEHIND THE SCENE
The Global Nomad's way of life, combining modernity, mobility and sophistication, has been subtly brought to the small screen by Parisian advertising agency BETC Luxe via a new TV advertising campaign targeting the Asia Pacific, Europe and Middle East regions. "Global Nomads are a new generation of travellers, who are also the leaders of the future," explains Brune Buonomano, Deput y CEO of BETC Luxe. "These people have broken down all the barriers between business and leisure. The world is their playground. They are hyper-connected explorers, who don’t want to have to choose between performance and pleasure, and who are constantly seeking places that can offer both inspiration and encounters. They have a pretty specific idea of their sense of balance and wellbeing. These are the people we are inviting to share in an experience that must be unique.”
THIS GLOBAL NOMAD IS ALONE BUT NOT LONELY, APPEARING RELAXED IN A VARIETY OF LOCATIONS AND ACROSS A RANGE OF TIME ZONES, TOTALLY CONNECTED TO THE CITY AND OTHER PEOPLE.
Brought to life on screen by Sino-Franco-Russian model Dimitri, this Global Nomad is alone but not lonely, appearing relaxed in a variety of locations and across a range of time zones, totally connected to the city and other people, just as happy in a meeting room as in the gym, at home absolutely everywhere, a fully-fledged citizen of the world. A dynamic, refined and cosmopolitan vision created by commercials director Irina Dakeva. The city of Shanghai was chosen as the “playground” for the backdrop for the campaign. “Shanghai was a well-considered choice," explains Jasmine Loignon, Creative Director at BETC. "We were lucky enough to be able to showcase two of the city’s most magnificent hotels: the Pullman Skyway & the Pullman Shanghai South. Plus it’s an extremely vibrant, modern, international and inspiring city for the modern-day global nomad.” Pullman Shangai South (See page 34) The TV commercial, shot on location in Shanghai, was released in six languages for appearance on TV screens, in-flight and on throught social media channels.
