Weeknights by 6 p.m.,

Michelle Place, husband Joe Gleason, and their four young children gather around an antique farm table to dish up a homemade meal and quality family time. “Eating together has really strengthened our family,” says Michelle, who counts Thai dishes, pies, and tarts among she and Joe’s from-scratch specialties. The kids, ages 5 to 9, help prepare meals and do their homework at the 12-foot-long stone-topped island that defines the cooking zone. Illuminated by a row of windows overlooking the patio, the island’s eating counter includes pencil drawers—one for each child— that keep art supplies and homework at hand. After dinner, the kids take turns reading to their parents on a cozy built-in bench while a fire burns in the cooking fireplace original to the early-1800s Rhode Island Colonial. “The kitchen is our family room,” Michelle says.
