World Book Night at Waterstones Background: World Book Night is an annual celebration of reading and books which takes place on 23 April. It sees passionate volunteers give hundreds of thousands of books away in their communities to share their love of reading with people who, for whatever reason, don’t read for pleasure or own books. Brief: Design three banners to be displayed in the window of the Leeds city centre branch of Waterstones on the night of the event. Measurements - 2x 60”x20” 1x 60”x40”. These banners should follow a night time theme Concept: To create an illustrated night forest scene that would span across the 3 large banners.

Development A night/moon theme was suggested and starting with the concept of the owl - a symbol of wisdom, a nocturnal creature and an icon that represents leeds, we widened the theme to ‘night forest’ - as the forest is a location synonmous with storytelling and fairytales. For this, we used the combination of animals and environment to build the scene. After establishing the format for the forest, we divided tasks. I created pieces of the environment, producing different tree variations, bushes, twigs, rocks, flowers and berries that we could use to scatter the environement and give it variety across the three posters. Meanwhile, Andy designed the woodland creatures to fill the scene. After an initial arrangement was created which we were both happy with, I continued to piece together and tweak the scene, dropping in the animals and extras one by one as Andy was able to complete them. Through this process of collaboration, making heavy use of dropbox to ensure shared files were up to date, we were able to rapidly build a complex and large-scale illustrated environment in time for the event.

Final Product We tried to make the 3 banners slightly different by making the left banner concentrate on a campfire, and the right hand side banner concentrate on a waterfall scene. The posters were dispalyed in time for World book night - 2 outside and 1 inside the shop. Although the brief wasn’t what we expected, we were happy with our design and enjoyed working in a different format and scale. The brief also allowed us to have our work associated with Waterstones and allowed us to add another window display to our bread and butter portfolio.
