CAMPUS SPORTS PARK

The LaTrobe University Sports Park and Stadium in Melbourne, is the first multi-use site of its kind in Australia. This highly sustainable development combines student use, research, professional sport, and community activities into one vibrant and consolidated site. Designed as a multi-phase project, the vast 60-hectare park integrates 12 cascading high-performance pitches for AFL, rugby, cricket, grass hockey, soccer, and baseball along with indoor teaching, research, and world-class court facilities for netball, basketball, and volleyball.

SITE PLAN

NET POSITIVE SPORTS BUILDING The Sports Stadium has been awarded Australia’s first “6 Star Green Star Design and As Built v1.2 certified rating” for a sports building by the Green Building Council Australia, recognizing ‘World Leadership’ in sustainable building practice. The solar photovoltaic (PV) panels on the roof amounting to 519 kW, capable of generating about 724,000 kWh year – allowing for its Net-Positive operation.

WELCOMING ARRIVAL With its efficient ‘6-pack’ planning and phasing for 3 additional courts, this exceedingly cost-effective building creates a simple prefabricated gable-roof massing that integrates a full passiveventilation, daylighting and photovoltaic strategy. The highly prominent west façade acts as a shading device, event space and transparent beacon for community and campus arrival into the sports park.

PLAN AND ORGANIZATION The Sports Stadium is developed as a gateway academic and recreation building linking the Sports Park with the University, colocating six high-performance courts, a 2,500-seat spectator show court, sports science facilities, teaching, training and research labs, along with varsity and regional club offices into a singular form. At the heart of the design is the transparent teaching ‘bar’ containing state-of-the-art sports science technology, including advanced physiology and biomechanics labs opening outwards to the fields and courts.
