What Are Grow Lamps For photosynthesis to occur, plants need light. Photosynthesis is how plants make their energy from water and various other nutrients. Light is literally a necessary nutrient for plants. If they were left completely without it, almost all plants would starve and die. Light is very important for many reasons: without it, plants will not thrive, their growth might be hindered and they may be more susceptible to disease. To be healthy, plants require sufficient sunlight. This makes growing plants in dark places challenging, if not impossible. Having said that, the quantity of sunlight plants receive can be replaced or augmented by using grow lights. Plant growing lights are artificial sources of light which help promote plant growth. These lights promote photosynthesis by emitting electromagnetic rays within the required spectrum. Growing lights are used in industrial settings in horticulture, food production, indoor gardens, and aquatic plants. However, they are also used in home settings, particularly for indoor use. In areas where the amount of daylight during winter can be quite limited, like locations that are far north, they can be very helpful. As a substitute for sunlight or to supplement the hours of sunlight available in outdoor settings, plant lights are very useful. If a certain color of light is needed for plants, the grow lights can be engineered to give off that color. Take red light for example - it appears to induce flowering in some plants; blue light on the other hand, increases vegetative growth in others. For consumer use, the most widely available lights create a wide spectrum of light colors that are designed to most closely match the light radiated by the sun. Incandescent, fluorescent, and LED lights have all been utilized for this application. Other kinds of growing lights regularly used are metal halide lights, high pressure sodium lights, xenon arc lights, and a variety of other types of light sources. Plant lights can make it possible to grow plants that usually grow only in specific locations to grow in a non-native climate. For example, if the temperatures in a non-native plant environment are ideal for growing a certain plant species, but the plant needs about 2 more hours of light exposure each day, utilizing plant lights can be an easy solution to the problem. The plant can stay outdoors and thrive with a grow light. When outdoor temperatures and climatic conditions are such that plants need to be brought indoors, growing lights can deliver the needed light, especially when there isn't sufficient sunlight through windows. In less than ideal outdoor climatic conditions, delicate, unusual and valuable plants can be kept alive and the growing season can be lengthened. Simple to complex, small to large; the range of grow light assemblies is huge. A simple light fixture that is elevated above a planting container is a standard grow light set up for consumer use. These usually use common incandescent or fluorescent bulbs available at a discount store or hardware store. On a more complex scale, grow light systems can be designed for very specific plant species. Various colors of light emission, certain intensity or number of lumens or capacity to cover a very large growing area such as an industrial-sized greenhouse are all specifications that can be designed in. Give some thought to providing more light for your plants with grow lights, specifically if you have plants that are struggling because of lack of sunlight or wish to usher in the growing season earlier with indoor plants starts.
