Rise Above My Color
ove
When I say a “rise above my color” I’m not speaking in terms of abandoning my culture, ignoring my heritage, or denying my race, but living above the stereotypes that have been publicized on television and in movies. For the past few weeks I have been back and forth about finding regular employment, raising my children alone, relying on government assistance, and finishing school. I went back and forth with the thought of giving up on everything, finding a regular job, and living how society expects me to live. Well I found employment, and for a moment it felt great to have all my bills paid on time, it felt great to eat out twice in one week, it felt so great to have a dollar or two to my name, but at the end of the day, I was exhausted and behind on my writing, my class work, and quality time with my children. I had lost sight of why I wanted to write, design, and travel around the world. I was happy to have a job but felt so trapped by the job at the same time. Panic set in and I almost sunk back into that dark, damp hole that society had placed me. Well, the assignment ended just as quick as it started because of other forces not within my control, and to be honest, I believe it was a test to show me that what I really wanted. I needed to focus on my reason for having the freedom to work my own hours....my children. Sometimes, things in life will not go as planned because, it is pushing you towards the path that God has laid out for you. Lately I have been having trouble with my daughter. I couldn’t figure out why she misbehaved so much and I deemed her to be an evil child. I blamed her father for not being here or checking
in on her, I blamed the kids in her class, I even blamed my medicine for her behavior. I blamed everyone and everything but myself(another characteristic trait of rising above, is to own up to your mistakes). I had neglected my children in order to keep a man for my children and have a complete family, I neglected my children to focus on a job that would provide me the money to buy them new toys and clothes and save up for trips, so that I could receive praise because deep down I didn’t believe I was a good parent. I was working backwards, upside down, zig zag; working every way but straight. Well, God revealed to me just how blind I was and how all the answers to my life’s questions were staring me in the face. The one thing that I deemed to be of the devil, God used to be a light for our path. My daughter is so unique and full of energy. I saw her behavior as horrible, when all she was doing was expressing herself. She draws on the walls of the house, she is constantly in my closet, and mimicking everything that I do. I didn’t see that she was a talented 4 year old that could hear a story and draw what she heard, or that she was in my closet, and trying on my clothes because she loves fashion, or that she mimicked me because no matter how many times I called her bad or whooped her, she looked up to her mommy and wanted to be like her. So my mission is to release my fears, focus on my children, and see that God is using them as a light upon our path. Those same passions that I have I could pass down to my children and build a legacy of our own. That is my purpose for following my dreams, I want to be able to pass down more than materialistic things. I want to pass down faith, discipline, ambitions, and confidence.

Is it Communication or Accountability? – Eric Terry, Sr. (The Relationship Coach)
in an offensive way. There are others who simply fail to communicate at all. They may Communication - A system of transmission not know how to express themselves in of information certain situations so they choose not to say Connection - A physical link between two or anything at all. For example: A husband that more points of communication (In marriage: will talk to his friends, family and co-workers A Spiritual Link) about almost any topic, but can’t talk to their spouse or significant other to let them When you look at our world today, we know what’s truly on their mind. A wife may have tons of ways in which we are able be able to share her deepest and darkest to communicate. Whether it’s done via a feelings with her girlfriends but unable to phone call, text, social media messaging, share how she truly feels to her mate. For video chat, email, letter or a face to face the most part, I believe that the problem conversation, we have countless ways to lies within our CONNECTION to what’s being get our messages across to one another. I communicated and not the communication often hear couples say that they just don’t itself. Let’s use today’s technology as an know how to communicate with each example. When two devices need to talk to other. We know HOW to communicate, each other, they need to have a “handshake” it’s just that at times, the material may be or a connection on various parameters difficult to navigate and we’re not clear in before the conversation can begin. communicating our viewpoint. There are The first agreement is on the medium or some who simply don’t know how to talk method for the communication. Will it to others. They say things in a harsh or be a physical connection or talk over a untactful manner that is sometimes received wireless signal? Bluetooth is one example
of a wireless signal over which two or more devices can communicate. I remember when I got my first Bluetooth earpiece. I couldn’t wait to get home to connect it to my phone. So without having any prior knowledge or experience with it, I tore it open and turned it on and waited for it to connect with my phone. When I made the first call and I could still hear the person through my phone handset, I knew I had done something wrong. Now, did this prompt me to read the instructions?? Of course not! So I turned it off and back on again, thinking maybe my phone just didn’t connect properly. After this cycle, I tried again with no change. After a few minutes of this, I thought just maybe I should read the instructions. This is what I found: Step one: Try to keep the two devices close together while they are connecting and in use. Most Bluetooth headsets have a range of 10 meters. Sooo...they can’t be too far apart, huh? Ok…Done! Step two: Make sure both device you want to connect has the Bluetooth function turned on. In most devices, this function typically defaults to being powered off to conserve battery power. I didn’t realize that there was an internal function inside of the phone that had to be connected. I thought as long as the power was on that it should connect. WRONG! Step three: Have one of the devices “search for new devices” to find the other. A Search?? So now I’ve got to make sure that both devices understand what’s taking place and are basically on the same page…Ok GOT IT!! Step four: Once your phone finds the other device enter the “pairing code” for the device
to link the two together. Uhhh Excuse me… No one mentioned there being a “CODE” for this… Can you see how I made the connection so difficult? It wasn’t that the devices weren’t in a position to connect, they just weren’t properly prepared for the connection. This is what happens to most couples. They’re simply not prepared. There are no classes in school that teach us how to communicate with others. Believe it or not, we are all a product of our environment. We simply learn how to communicate from our own experiences. The type of communication we saw from our parents and others around us. These are things that we must understand before we can move forward in any relationship.

We as women grow up dreaming of a prince riding on a white horse sweeping us off our feet. We go from the beginning of a novel straight to the final chapter. We’ve closed our eyes to the chapters in the middle of the book that explained how much we’ve endured as women. So many chapters that explain how some girls were raped as adolescents by their mother’s lovers or cousins trying to play a game of house. Some girls raised their siblings more than the mother who worked 3 jobs to make ends meet after her man left them for another woman. Don’t forget the little mamas whose self-esteem was shattered by people telling her she’ll never grow up to be anything. She was told her skin was too dark and her hair too nappy for anyone to love.

Others have been so hurt they will never trust again. We thumbed past the chapter about recognizing the traits of a King. There are men who see past our guarded hearts and see us as QUEENS. Positive Thinking And Its Effect On Your Health by: Greg Riley
The first situation to consider is the relationship between thoughts and conditions like depression and stress. A crucial question is whether the person’s thoughts are creating the physical depression or the physical depression is creating the negative thinking. When it comes to how you can use your mind to help, this can be accomplished consciously and subconsciously. When someone has a habit of imagining things turning out very badly, rational thinking can show show them that they often exaggerate. However, the unconscious mind is much more powerful in shaping our habitual behavior, oftentimes beyond our conscious control. Visualization and hypnosis can be very effective in modifying beliefs and, if you do this, the long-lasting effects can be more powerful than using logic only. It is likewise true that positive thinking can have an impact on our physical health, and you may be aware of the placebo effect on people who feel ill. This is when individuals are given a pill which in reality does not have any healing value, and yet they claim to notice an improvement in how they feel. This is evidence of the connection between mind and body, and there are many examples of men and women with a positive outlook being able to recover faster from malady and injury. You can also use the power of your mind to help you in achieving your fitness goals. A historic example of this is when the four minute barrier for running the mile was broken, which had been considered as unachievable up to that point. Once the “barrier” had been broken, other runners also began to break through what had really been a barrier of belief. The effects of aging are likewise influenced by how we think about the process. As you get older, do you talk to your friends about your “aches and pains” and your weakened capabilities? It seems there’s a great deal of truth to the saying, “You’re only as old as you think you are,” and our thoughts can be used to undo a lot of the so-called effects of aging. Unfortunately, numerous individuals will continue to hold on to old beliefs about the unavoidable “decline” of health in old age, and not pay attention to the benefits of a positive outlook. Now that you are aware that your attitude can bring you a much better state of health, it’s up to you to take advantage of this information and set your intention to think positive thoughts whenever you remember.
