ear junctionites,
If one were to look for the parameters for happiness, we would all have to scratch beyond the surface to arrive at ones which would be specific to us. What are the parameters that would count for a nation’s happiness? If one were to go by the parameters arrived at by the Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN), a global initiative for the United Nations, India does look a very unhappy nation. SDSN took into account the per capita GDP, life expectancy, social support and freedom to make life choices as indicators of happiness while drawing up the 2015 World Happiness Report. India has come in at 117 out of 158 countries, behind unusual and unexpected suspects such as Pakistan, Bangladesh, Iraq and Ukraine. Certainly food for thought on several accounts and perhaps a push to take hard decisions on a number of issues. In fact, I have been attempting to make a point on rampant problems such as farmer suicides on several social media channels. Lack of sustainable methods of livelihood in rural areas cause despair and desperation, leading to such extreme steps. Even if they migrate, they do not have the required skill sets to survive in a city environment. I believe that building “smart cities” which would provide Employment, Productivity and Respect for Public Spaces is the need of the hour. I have written about this in considerable detail in an article which has been carried by Tata
World. The economic corridors the government is planning to set up which will house these smart cities is a step in the right direction and the only way such problems can be addressed. And see that we as a nation break in to the top 50 country’s in the next SDSN report. Coming to ourselves, another financial year has gone by and mjunction is riding on its new business ventures, whether in tea, ocean vessel chartering or estimation and detailing. Of course our mainstays of e-selling and e-procurement continue to be our biggest strengths, which was tested by the highly successful e-auction of telecom broadband spectrum that we conducted for the Indian government over 19 days in March. It was a nationally significant assignment and I believe with the government’s focus on selling natural resources only through the e-auction route, this is really our time under the sun. e-auctions have traditionally been our forte and I think we have built heavily on this core competency over more than a decade. Some of my senior colleagues and I spent two days drawing up our medium term and long term strategy. It was a successful meet and we decided to focus on “improved execution” at all levels in the company. I urge each one of you to make the best of existing opportunities and play a role in mjunction achieving its organisational goals. In order to focus more on regions other than the east, which is our traditional stronghold, we had changed the organisational structure with regional managers posted at all regions. We are committed to that structure and we hold regional managers’ meets at regular intervals at our head office. We want to be as close to our customers in the north as we are to them in the east. We want to be aware of and awake to their pain points, their needs and their concerns. I also want to tell each one of you that whether or not we are in roles that require us to interact with our customers directly, finally we are all working for that common goal – to satisfy our customers, whether directly or indirectly. Winning the Exemplary award for usage of Tata Innoverse for 2014-15 was a shot in the arm, especially since we had just about nine months to adopt it. Innovation, as you are all aware, is one of the cornerstones of mjunction’s philosophy and also one of its core values. mjunction’s birth was an innovation by itself and then it was innovation at every stage of our growth. It began with using a common technology platform for both e-selling and e-sourcing and then moving on to cleaning the mafia-infested coal supply chain through transparent methods. Tata Innoverse
was just a systematic process to drive innovation in all junctionites. All of you participated wholeheartedly and the award was a recognition of your efforts. Congratulations to all of you and may the spirit of innovation never die in all of us. We held our 10th Movement for Efficiency & Transparency (MET) event at Hyderabad in association with NMDC. It was a hugely successful event and I am happy we are able to make a difference somewhere, even if it is just to capture mindspace of the relevant audience. Our next event is coming up in Bokaro soon and I am looking forward to being there for the second time. I end with a little prayer for the earthquake victims of Nepal and a prayer of gratitude that all of us are safe. Regards,
