Measure for measure: How to deal with China?
Today, the one overriding topic being discussed is the unmitigated dumping by China and imports deluge from Japan and South Korea. The need of the hour? Government protection, reduction in the cost of doing business and bringing the full range of steel products under protection schemes and implementation of the MIP. The safeguard duty, important for the short-term, is not a long-term solution. If dumping is not stopped, the benefits of consumption growth will be reaped by China. Narendran warns India needs steel investors and not steel importers who will help create jobs in India. Uppal feels the MIP could be the game-changer, because, unless the situation improves, the industry will not be able to invest anew.
