LETTER FROM BOB MORAN

DEAR FANS,

W

elcome to the first Volvo Car Open, owned and operated by Family Circle magazine. This is a celebration of our 44th year as a women’s professional tennis event, and marks our 16th year on Daniel Island in beautiful Charleston, SC. Our new title sponsor, Volvo Car, USA has made a strategic decision to build its first production facility in the greater Charleston area, and we couldn’t be more excited that they have chosen our event to showcase its best in class international brand. When you arrive at the Stadium, we invite you to check out all of Volvo Car, USA’s latest variety of SUV’s and Sedans located around the facility. You can even take one for a spin at the “Ride and Drive” tent situated conveniently near the main entrance. We have many activities to keep you busy throughout your time with us. From cardio tennis and pickleball clinics, to fashion shows and wine tastings, there is always something to do on our grounds! One big addition to this year’s weeklong schedule is the PowerShares Series on Saturday night, April 9th. This event will feature Andre Agassi, Andy Roddick, Mardy Fish and James Blake competing to become the first winner of the “Charleston Legends” trophy. As always, our tournament will showcase thrilling women’s tennis with matches that will have you on the edge of your seat. We welcome back our current champion Angelique Kerber, to defend her title, as well as a handful of fan favorites including, Venus Williams, Andrea Petkovic, Madison Keys and Genie Bouchard. We hope that you will join us for the best experience in women’s professional tennis. The Volvo Car Open team, along with more than 500 volunteers and all of our partners, work extremely hard to make sure your time with us is fun, exciting and memorable. LETTER FROM THE MAYOR

DEAR friends,

O

n behalf of the City of Charleston, it is my honor to welcome you to the 2016 Volvo Car Open. This year marks the tournament’s forty-fourth year in South Carolina and the first as the Volvo Car Open. It is exciting to reflect upon the tournament’s achievements, both on and off the court. The world’s biggest stars in women’s professional tennis have made their mark at this historic event, and the Family Circle Cup has become a great source of pride for our community. In addition, tennis has grown exponentially in the area as the tournament brings the City of Charleston international attention. I am extremely excited as the Tournament now transitions to a new era, as Volvo Car USA takes over the mantle as the event’s title sponsor. Volvo Car USA is a welcome addition not only to this world-class event but also to the greater Charleston area as they build their first North American production facility in the great state of South Carolina. While enjoying this WTA Tour Premier Event, I invite each of you to explore all Charleston has to offer. A comfortable spring climate and beautiful landscapes make Charleston a destination for tennis players and fans alike. As one of the top tourist destinations in the country, Charleston is renowned for its countless historical, cultural, culinary and shopping experiences. I hope you will enjoy your visit to Charleston, and I extend best wishes to all the competitors for a very successful tournament.

annah Warren always planned to study veterinary medicine after high school. Her plans changed two years ago, when she discovered a large lump on her back. After testing and waiting, she learned that she had Ewing’s sarcoma, a type of pediatric bone cancer. Her doctor told her, yes, she would lose her hair, but that Ewing’s sometimes is curable. “I don’t consider any other options than that,” she says. Today, Hannah is undergoing treatment at MUSC Children’s Hospital and focusing on life after cancer. We aim to help her beat this disease and live the life she dreams, which now includes a degree from Clemson and a career in theater. When it comes to children’s health, only the best will do. With your help, that’s exactly what we’re going to build: the MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital, a new children’s hospital that’s bigger and better in every way. Please, visit imagine.musckids.org to make a gift or stop by our booth at the Volvo Car Open to learn more.

CHARLESTON TITLE HELPED IGNITE KERBER BELIEF

It’s a pretty good antidote for a player to win in Charleston... It’s been a good tournament for a wide range of players. You get your belief back. –P am Shriver, former world No. 1 in doubles and an ESPN analyst

An advertising supplement to The Post and Courier

ngelique Kerber remembers arriving in Charleston for the 2015 tournament very well: She was frustrated, struggling with her game, and at a point in her career where you take the tennis pasta and throw it against the wall – just to see what sticks. But for Kerber, now 28, a week of sliding and grinding on the green clay in Charleston is what stuck: She turned her downward spiral into an upward force of mobility, which peaked in January when the German won her first-ever Grand Slam title at the Australian Open, beating world No. 1 Serena Williams in a dramatic final. “When I won the title in Charleston, that was the turnaround point,” Kerber told reporters in January. “Every single match I was playing in Charleston was really important for me, starting from the first match – where I was down – and then against (defending champion) Andrea Petkovic in the semis.” Charleston tennis fans didn’t know much about Kerber, a lefty with a beautiful forehand and a neversay-die approach, until her win here last year. She played in Lowcountry only once before, in 2010, but her win here – including a close-as-can-be final over Madison Keys in three sets – endeared her to fans. It also spiked her belief. “Her confidence was fairly low by her standards,” said Pam Shriver, the former world No. 1 in doubles and an ESPN analyst. “There was a lot of questioning of her natural being on the court, which is expected in a long career where you might try a lot of different things to see what is going to work out and what isn’t. I felt like she was going through a lot.” 2015 had started lackluster for Kerber, who had won three of 10 matches between the

Australian Open and Charleston. But after her inspiring run here, she won titles in Stuttgart, Birmingham and Stanford, and then qualified for the WTA Finals in Singapore. It led to what Kerber discussed as renewed selfbelief in Melbourne, where she beat former world No. 1 Victoria Azarenka in the quarterfinals before her triumph over Williams. She’s the first German player to win a major since Steffi Graf. “I think the Australian Open gave me a big confidence boost,” Kerber said. “There were a lot of ups and downs, and you can only get through tough times when you believe in yourself. I have been a Top 10 player for four years now and have won a Grand Slam, so there is no reason for selfdoubts.” Shriver views Charleston as a launching pad for many champions here in the past. “It’s a pretty good antidote for a player to win in Charleston” Shriver said. “Charleston has done that in the past with Sam Stosur; Sabine Lisicki won that year out of the blue; and the year Petkovic won her, she got to the semifinals of the French Open. It’s been a good tournament for a wide range of players. You get your belief back.” Now the question looms: How high can Kerber’s belief take her? Let’s watch and see.

With her triumph at the Australian Open in January, Kerber became the first German player to win a Grand Slam since Steffi Graf in 1999. The left-hander was champion a year ago in the Lowcountry, and a newfound confidence has helped her capture three other titles since then, before winning her first Grand Slam.

Does Venus need any introduction? At 35, the seven-time major winner is still a force to be reckoned with in tennis, having won her 49th career singles title in February. Venus is as relaxed and fun loving as she’s ever been, too. “I’m still very hungry,” she said recently. “I’m ready for more.”

ear after year, the best of the best on the WTA Tour descend on Charleston for the Volvo Car Open, and 2016 is no different. In fact, the field is as strong as ever, featuring six former champions, the reigning Australian Open winner, and a host of up-andcoming stars set to make their mark in women’s tennis.

Australia // Age: 32 Best Charleston result: 2010 champion

Stosur celebrates her birthday yearly in Charleston, and last won here in 2010. Her game – that big, kicking serve and monster forehand – excels on clay, where the ball spits into her hitting zone and the soft surface helps her movement. If the serve is dialed in – watch out! Fun fact: She won the US Open in 2011.

Safarova is a dangerous lefty, and had a career-best run at a major when she made the French Open final last year in Paris. She reached three additional finals in 2015, earning one title in Doha. She also won four doubles titles, most notably at the Australian and French Opens.

“Petko,” as she’s known, became a Charleston favorite when she won the title here two years ago. She also has a South Carolina connection: Her dad, Zoran, played tennis at USC years ago. Her consistent baseline game is frustrating to more error-prone opponents.

Bencic is one of the fastest rising teenagers on tour, having won her first two career titles last year and breaking into the top 10 in 2016. She has a close relationship with countrywoman Martina Hingis, and was coached by Melanie Molitor – Hingis’ mom – as a girl. Bencic likes to move her opponent around, and then go for a winner into the open court.

Keys is one of the hardest hitters on tour, and has come into her own as a top player, with a run to the Australian Open semifinals in 2015, then her runner-up performance here 12 months ago. If Madison is hitting the ball crisply, she is a danger to any foe across the net.

Charleston is the site of Lisicki’s first-ever WTA Tour title, and since then the German has been a regular resident in the top 30, making the Wimbledon final in 2013. There’s a reason her nickname is “Boom Boom Lisicki:” She’s recorded the fastest-ever serve in the women’s game.

Bouchard has had an up-and-down last 12 months, but the Canadian has appeared to be on the upswing this season, conjuring up the kind of tennis that brought her to the Australian Open and French Open semifinals in 2014, as well as the Wimbledon final that year. She’s reached two finals thus far in 2016.

Sloane has been a consistent force on tour for much of the last four years, her whipping forehand as her go-to attacking shot. After winning her maiden title in Washington D.C. last year, she’s added two more in 2016 - in Auckland and Acapulco.

Gavrilova may be the only name you don’t recognize on this list, but the Russianturned-Australian plays with plenty of spunk and power, and has a kind of joy on court that is infectious to those that watch her. A surprise run to the second week of the Australian Open has given her the kind of confidence that could help her become a top 20 mainstay, too.

LETTER FROM MATT SLOAN

DEAR friends,

W

elcome to Daniel Island and the Volvo Car Open! The tournament’s name may be new, but this long-established event has been a Daniel Island tradition almost since our island town began. Each spring, our community takes great pride in welcoming visitors from around the world who come to watch the competition and experience Charleston’s southern hospitality. On Daniel Island, we are celebrating 20 years since our first residential neighborhoods came to life. Back in 1996 Daniel Island was primarily rural farmland that was in the direct path of the city’s growth. A thoughtful master plan laid out the vision for what this place could become, and that vision was just beginning to come to life. In 2000, when the tennis tournament came to town, our downtown began to take shape, with the new tennis stadium as a key landmark and the first of many diverse businesses opening their doors. Since then, new businesses of all kinds have made their home here. Our neighborhoods are now home to more than 10,000 people, three schools, hundreds of acres of parks, a country club and two golf courses. Daniel Island has truly become the island town envisioned when planning began. There’s still growth in Daniel Island’s residential neighborhoods, with new homes and a neighborhood park and pool under construction on the island’s south end and, among the last and most beautiful, homesites under development in the golf neighborhood of Daniel Island Park. We hope you’ll explore our island town while you’re visiting this week. Check out the shops and restaurants downtown and take a stroll through our parks and neighborhoods, accessible by more than 25 miles of trails. Need a place to get oriented? We invite you to stop by the Daniel Island Sales & Information Center on the Wando River at 101 River Landing Drive. Enjoy your visit!

Edged by 23 miles of rivers and tidal creeks • With parks, gardens, biking and walking trails • On-island shops, schools, restaurants and churches • Convenient to beaches and an international airport • A private club with golf courses by Tom Fazio and Rees Jones • Volvo Car Open • Neighborliness and a strong sense of civic pride • An established community with a coveted Charleston address • A town. An island. A way of life.

Homes from the $400s to over $5 million. Condominiums and townhomes from the mid-$100s. Homesites from the low $200s.

Imagining a better world out there starts by imagining a better one in here. Children’s minds can take them anywhere. And while they imagine a world of dinosaurs and spaceships, no child imagines themselves in a hospital. Which is why we’re building one like no other in the world. With specially trained caregivers, medicine and technology, we’ll protect the world they imagine. Imagine What’s Possible

With support from the Volvo Car Open, MUSC Health is imagining what’s possible for the children of South Carolina. Welcome, Volvo Car, to the Lowcountry and to this great tennis tournament. And thank you Family Circle and its parent company Meredith Corporation for continuing the generous contribution to the Medical University of South Carolina, its children’s health programs and the campaign to build the MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital. We all share a parallel history and a common vision. The Family Circle Cup changed what was possible in women’s professional sports, and certainly in women’s tennis. It brought the best of the best to Charleston. It built a state-ofthe-art facility here and it set the bar for excellence. Volvo’s philosophy has always been to put people first. Delivering innovative solutions that make people’s lives easier, safer, better is the Volvo way. It’s also the MUSC Health way: leading health innovation for the lives we touch.

A new experience for South Carolina’s children and their families Last year, MUSC announced plans to build a new children’s hospital and women’s pavilion adjacent to its state-of-the-art Ashley River Tower. With more beds for intensive care patients (including an expanded neonatal ICU), acute care patients, and new and expecting mothers, every floor of the new MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital is being designed by teams of doctors, nurses — and parents — with one goal in mind: creating a patient-centered, family-friendly environment where children can heal, families can participate as active members of their children’s medical care teams, and all are nurtured in the most supportive, advanced environment possible. With few exceptions, patient rooms will be private, with furniture that will comfortably accommodate short and long stays by patients and their families. This is particularly important for seriously ill patients such as bone marrow recipients, who typically stay 100 days. Each patient floor will feature light-filled play spaces, sunny respite areas, and shared spaces (including kitchens, laundry facilities, showers and other comforts and conveniences for patient families) designed to promote a supportive community of care. The dining area, with greenery and an outside terrace overlooking the Ashley River, will occupy a centrally located floor in the patient tower, so families can remain close to their children’s rooms during meals.

Advances specifically dedicated to the care and well-being of children For expecting parents, a dedicated “stork” elevator will transport mothers in labor from the hospital entrance directly to the fourth-floor maternity pavilion. Prior to that, the Advanced Fetal Care Center will screen the health of their unborn babies. Most deliveries at MUSC go smoothly. Should complications arise, the neonatal intensive care unit will be one of only three facilities in the country to feature couplet-care rooms, where newborns and mothers can recover together in an intensive-care setting. The hospital will house South Carolina’s most comprehensive, dedicated heart center, with two cardiac operating rooms, two catheterization labs, a cardiac echocardiography lab, and the state’s only pediatric cardiac intensive care unit and step-down unit. An entire floor will be dedicated to the care of children with cancer. All aspects of care (outpatient, transfusion, clinics and inpatient areas) will be contained on the same unit on the top floor of the building, providing these longer-term patients with soothing views of the Ashley River. Children undergoing chemotherapy are left immunocompromised and have to wear masks whenever they go out of their rooms. The special air flow on this floor will allow children to move freely around the entire floor without the concern of picking up cold or flu bugs. An express elevator will connect to the only above-ground, mid-lift helicopter pad on the peninsula, capable of accommodating Black Hawk and Jay Hawk helicopters in the event of a major flood disaster. It leads directly to the region’s only Level 1 dedicated pediatric trauma center and nationally ranked pediatric emergency room.

Designed by families, built by the community The extraordinary new MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital and its women’s pavilion is expected to open in 2019. Thanks to the Jenkins family, organizations like Volvo Car and Meredith Corporation, and many others, we are off to a good start in raising the funds to make what we imagined to be possible become a reality. In the meantime, the skills and dedication of the care teams at the current MUSC Children’s Hospital continue to change what’s possible for children. Visit imagine.musckids.org to view story after story of the children who have survived life-threatening diseases and injuries, and who can now grow up to be what they imagine themselves to be. And learn what you can do to support this cause.

PALMETTO WARRIOR CONNECTION IS A LOCAL NON-PROFIT THAT AIMS TO EASE THE TRANSITION FROM MILITARY BACK TO CIVILIAN FOR LOCAL WARRIORS AND THEIR FAMILIES.

A

s part of the 2016 Volvo Car Open, Prudential Financial has partnered with Palmetto Warrior Connection (PWC) as part of their military night outreach. In the months leading up to and during the tournament week, Prudential Financial and PWC have united to offer active military personnel the proper tools to help make the transition into civilian life. In addition, all active-duty and retired military personnel and their families will receive complimentary admission into the Volvo Car Open on Thursday, April 7th for Military Appreciation Night. PWC is a local non-profit that aims to ease the transition from military back to civilian for local Warriors and their families. With rising unemployment rates, housing costs, and a veteran suicide rate of 22 per day, finding hope for success amongst transition becomes a daunting task for many. Over the past two years, PWC has made it their mission to go out and proactively find transitioning Warriors and walk with them through their individualized journey towards selfsustainment. Acting as Veteran Advocates, the PWC team extends a hand of help and hope through community collaboration of resources. Also focusing on building community, PWC offers monthly events and topic specific workshops open to all Warriors and their families. PWC’s events focus on family-friendly activities that allow Warriors to engage with one another and build relationships. These events have ranged from flag football games, to an adaptive leadership ropes course.

The workshop piece helps to equip the Warrior and family with the tools necessary to manage a successful transition. Workshop topics cover the service areas of employment, benefits, education, housing and also mental health. In the words of one of PWC’s very own Warriors, MSG Annetra Mc-Cauley-Harris, US Army, “During my tenure in the US Army I felt stable, focused, vigilant and able, then it seemed like one day I woke up and all that changed. At a time when things looked bleak for myself and my family, Palmetto Warrior Connection provided hope, comfort and made what seemed impossible, POSSIBLE! I contacted Palmetto Warrior Connection and they said, come in and let’s see how we can help you, and they did! For any veteran solider or military family who may need a helping hand, I would absolutely say to give the team of devoted, compassionate, and service loyal individuals at PWC a call. They will do what others may not and give you the faith to believe that HELP is only a phone call away.” MSG Mcauley-Harris is one moving success story of many! To date, PWC has outreached and engaged more than 3,400 Warriors, employed more than 170 veterans and spouses, housed 51 homeless Warriors, enrolled more than 2400 Warriors in healthcare, and assisted more than 800 Warriors in accessing their education benefits. Leaving the military is a huge transition, and PWC does not want our Warriors to do it alone. No matter what the situation, PWC is able to provide local Warriors with life changing resources and a helping hand of hope. An advertising supplement to The Post and Courier

WHAT ONE EXPERIMENT MEANS TO EVERYONE’S RETIREMENT.

The time between when people should start saving for retirement and when they actually do is known as the “Action Gap.” And it has a bigger effect than you might think. To better understand the impact, we performed a simple experiment. We asked a group of young people to use paint rollers to show us what age they think they should start saving. Then we asked a group of older people to indicate what age they actually did start. What we found was that there was often a years-long Action Gap between the two. But closing it up by even just a few years makes a huge difference in how much people can save over the long run. Which makes right now the perfect time to get better prepared for your retirement.

What’s your pre-match meal?

Mattek-Sands: Gluten-free oatmeal. Currently the strawberries and cream flavor! Puig: Plain white rice or plain pasta, since they are easy to digest and give me the fuel I need.

What’s your favorite thing about your job?

Mattek-Sands: Playing on the biggest stages around the world. Puig: I love that we get to travel the world, and especially see the fans week in and week out. I get to do what I love to do most and that is playing tennis for a living!

If you weren’t a tennis player you would be a what? Mattek-Sands: An author... I love to write. Puig: I would love to work in TV/Broadcasting!

What’s your perfect road trip with friends: Who, where, music, snacks?! Mattek-Sands: I love road trips! [My husband] Justin always drives and the dog is in the back seat. Our last trip was to the Grand Canyon and we kept it country as far as tunes went. One thing we don’t skimp out on is snacks: We’re packed up on everything from Soppressata to roasted hominy corn to salted dark chocolate bars. Puig: I love the beach, so it would have to be to a beach somewhere, with my friends.

Bethanie, you always have crazy hair! What’s your next go-to style?

Mattek-Sands: Right now I have a shaved undercut with a little bit of design in it. I’m giving the coloring process a little break!

Monica, what’s your secret talent? Puig: I am a mean in-the-shower singer!

Who plays Bethanie in a movie about your life? Mattek-Sands: Charlize Theron. She’s one of my favorites!

Monica, you use #PicaPower on social media often. What is it? Where did it come from?

Puig: My coach in juniors always used told me, “You’re a diamond in the rough, keep working hard and ‘picking away’ at it.” Pica comes from the Spanish word “picar,” which means “picking away,” like chipping away at something and forming it into how you want it to look. ON THE RISE:

A YOUTHFUL EXUBERANCE KEEPS BENCIC GROUNDED – AND SHOOTING FOR THE SKY

Belinda Bencic

I

t was two years ago that Belinda Bencic, then ranked No. 140, stormed into the Volvo Car Open semifinals as a qualifier. Only 16 years old, at the time, and armed with a crafty game, she was a competitor who played with a youthful exuberance. It’s that same kind of energy that launched her into the top 10 earlier this year. Some 15 years after she started playing tennis, at the urging of her father, Bencic is on the cusp of becoming the next great Swiss star on the coattails of Martina Hingis, Roger Federer and Stan Wawrinka. “At the beginning, it was just small rackets and sponge balls,” remembers Bencic. “But soon, it became more serious and my dad starting driving me to go to Melanie Molitor’s academy.” Molitor is Hingis’ mother and former coach, and is seen as the biggest influence in Bencic’s game. Her success-at-a-young-age track is similar to that of Hingis, and for that reason the fast track to stardom hasn’t phased the now 19 year old. “I grew up watching Martina, so her mom’s academy was the perfect place for me to develop my game,” Bencic says. For Bencic, there is no “normal” teenage life – like attending high school, or Sundays hanging out with friends. For as long as she can remember, its always been tennis, yet her ability to realize there is more out there than what is between the lines has helped keep her driven on the court. “Traveling makes you learn to be independent,” she explains. “Other girls were meeting friends or going to the movies, but I was always practicing. It can be a bit lonely sometimes, but I always had my family around me and I love playing tennis.” And Bencic – with a zest for tennis and life – is part of a new generation of players who have made fast friends on tour. She calls France’s Kristina “Kiki” Mladenovic and Karolina Pliskova, of the Czech Republic, close friends. “I’ve been lucky I think,” she says. “It’s difficult to be friends with girls you are competing against, but I have been able to develop some good friendships. Me, Kiki and Kristina are part of a group chat on our phones and we spend time together shopping and exploring things away from tennis.”

2 2 2016 VOLVO CAR OPEN | www.volvocaropen.com

It’s that balance that has seemed to make Bencic extra dangerous in the span of just 24 months. Is she tennis’ next big star? “I like to win matches,” she says simply. “But I also like to enjoy myself. I think it is important to have a balance between being serious and having fun. I am still young and I have a lot to learn. There is still a long way to go, but sometimes I just have to remind myself about how far I have come in just two years.”

MWTennis Academy Continues Impressive Growth

W

hile the best women’s tennis players descend on Volvo Car Stadium for one week, some future stars of the game are here year-round, as part of the MWTennis Academy. The Academy has some 215 players on campus each week, with a home-school program growing from eight to 22 players in just a year, and the after-school program has nearly doubled to 43. “MW prides itself on proactive communication, consistent performance on and off the court and an extremely high level of ethics,” said Jeff Wilson, the CEO of MWTennis Academy. MW’s Director of Coaching, Bryan Minton was recently named the 2015 USTA South Carolina Coach of the Year. “MW offers tennis training for everyone from four-year-old kids to the highest level players in the world,” Wilson said. “We’re here to help tennis players achieve their dreams.” And maybe that dream involves the chance to play in the Volvo Car Open one day…

t’s no secret that Charleston is one of the most special cities in the world: The history, food, charm, architecture and Southern hospitality make it a must-visit stop for tourists from around the world, and the reasons locals and visitors alike repeatedly rank this coastal city Number 1. That includes the best tennis players in the world, who come back to South Carolina each spring for the Volvo Car Open and gush over one of the most well-loved and unique stops on the WTA Tour. So, this year we asked a collection of them – current and former – to tell us their most coveted things about one of the world’s most coveted cities. Here’s what they said: Sam Stosur, 2010 champion: I eat at as many restaurants as possible! I love the food in Charleston; there are so many great places to pick from. My favorite is FIG and I’ve eaten there many times over the years and always love it. Halls Chophouse is a favorite if I feel like a big steak, but if I really want to be bad then I go Leon’s Oyster Shop. It is fantastic, but probably not best for the night before a match! The hospitality of the South really makes you feel welcome and makes me want to see as much of the city as possible. I’d love to make it to Charleston at another time of the year to visit for a vacation. Bethanie Mattek-Sands, 2009 doubles champion: I stay with my second 2 8 2016 VOLVO CAR OPEN | www.volvocaropen.com

of the WTA

family on John’s Island and love every minute of it! We’ve done everything in Charleston from sailing on the water to grilling in the backyard to dining and shopping downtown. Charleston is one of my favorite cities to shop! Sabine Lisicki, 2009 champion: We usually rent a house on Daniel Island and enjoy that we are able to cook rather than being in a hotel all the time! I think that downtown is really cute to walk along. I love the old clubhouse at the tournament, and the people who work for the tournament so sweet. Pam Shriver, ESPN commentator: I was born and raised in Baltimore where there is so much history, so I love going back to cities with a Colonial feel that also have that tie-in to history. The idea that there are plenty of ghosts in Charleston is fascinating to me, and I love taking a ride on a nighttime horse and buggy tour. The golf is fantastic, too. On Kiawah or Daniel Island … It’s incredible. The U.S.S. Yorktown is a must-see, especially for kids. To me it’s like, “Planes land on this ship deck?!” For kids to see that is pretty fun to experience. Rennae Stubbs, ESPN commentator: I love walking around King Street and then looking at the historic homes and the cobblestones lanes! To me, Charleston has good food, but the service is what makes it unparalleled. The owners greet you at the door and never make you feel anything but welcome! The people are kind and welcoming everywhere you go. An advertising supplement to The Post and Courier

Agassi, Roddick, and More Bring Men’s Tennis I

Back to Charleston

t’s been 12 years since professional men’s tennis has made its mark in South Carolina. This year, it returns with the PowerShares Series at the Volvo Car Stadium, featuring Andre Agassi, Andy Roddick, Mardy Fish and James Blake competing in a nighttime showdown on Saturday, April 9th. Back in 2004 was the last time the men touched down in Charleston, when Roddick, Blake and Fish were part of a victorious U.S. Davis Cup team that beat Belarus 4-0 inside, what is now, the Volvo Car Stadium. “It was probably the most fun Davis Cup weekend we have ever had in terms of enjoying the city,” said Fish. “If you ask Andy and the Bryan brothers what their favorite time at a Davis Cup weekend was, I would be hard pressed to think that any of them would say anywhere other than Charleston.” For Agassi, his return to Charleston has an even longer

lead-time. It was April 1988 when he last played in the Lowcountry. He won the U.S. Men’s Clay Court Championships, a Grand Prix tennis tournament that was held on Isle of Palms. The PowerShares Series will bring all four men to Charleston again to compete on its 12-city tour, which features a competitive tennis circuit with legendary icons and worldrenowned champions. The event features fast-moving tennis in a one-set format: Players face off in a pair of single-set semifinals and then the winners battle it out in one-set final. “Fans are going to see us go as hard as we can against each other,” explained Fish. “What’s cool about the PowerShares Series is the fact that you get to cross-generation battle. I think it’s really exciting to get the opportunity to play against Agassi.”

Roddick, for his part, is excited to return to a city that he and wife Brooklyn Decker almost called home. “I always love coming back to Charleston, but these days I’m there more for golf than tennis,” admitted the 2003 U.S. Open champ. “Charleston has always been in our (mine and Brooklyn’s) top five places to live if it wasn’t Austin.” So who emerges the winner? “I am the favorite,” jokes Fish. “I am the Novak Djokovic of Champions Tennis! Bring on any and all comers … I am the closest retiree. That being said, I play the least amount of tennis. It will go quickly for me, but right now I’m the clear favorite.” Regardless of who raises the trophy at the end of the night, this newcomer event to the Volvo Car Stadium is sure to be a hit with fans.

AFTER 60 YEARS IN AMERICA, WE’VE FINALLY DECIDED TO MOVE IN. We’re pleased to be opening our first-ever American factory in South Carolina. Why here? Put simply — the people. The hospitality, desire to succeed, and professionalism of South Carolinians won us over. We are proud to be building our all-new Volvo S60 here and look forward to the first American-built Volvo car driving off the line in 2018. As a new member of the community, we are honored to partner with Charleston’s premier sporting event and present the first Volvo Car Open. We wish all the players and supporters a great tournament and a great time in Charleston.
