2012 was undoubtedly a year of celebration which saw both the Diamond Jubilee and the Olympics and I must admit I find it hard to think that another year could ever beat it. However, 2013 brings its promises too, not least more royal celebrations following the announcement of the Duchess of Cambridge’s pregnancy.

I was lucky enough to be invited to the Royal Mail Sorting Office in Newport Pagnell early on a December morning and while I was indeed in need of a caffeine boost the workers there were in full swing. I was amazed by the machinery behind the operation of delivering post and am still staggered by the volume of post which is dealt with daily. Now the Christmas period is over I hope things have finally quietened down and they are having a well earned rest now.
Already for me as an MP my diary is fit to bursting with events happening in and around Milton Keynes at the beginning of the year, a sure sign that no one is resting on their laurels and our community is as active and engaged as ever. As the saying goes as the New Year begins, out with the old and in with the new and I adopted this approach when it came to my chest hair towards the end of last year. Beauty by Rajni is a salon based in Conniburrow who decided to hold a sponsored “Wax Off” in aid of Children in need, in the spirit of the season I was duly signed up and when my office staff told me quite what I had been signed up for; I must admit I was a little fearful. I can’t say it is something I would go and do out of choice but I was very impressed by the results and the salon was fantastic.
I am continuing to run my ‘reading campaign’ in primary schools across Milton Keynes this year, which I hope will raise the profile of the importance of children reading both at home and at school. With the UK’s illiteracy rates scoring as some of the highest in Western Europe there has never been a more important time to encourage children to get some enjoyment out of reading. I’ve had a fantastic response to the campaign with nearly 30 schools taking part and I have been amazed at some of the books which I have been asked to read from-they’re certainly more colourful than they were when I started reading! The herniated disc Herniated discs are often referred to as slipped discs. This isn’t entirely accurate. The disc doesn’t slip out of alignment with the spine, like a block in a Jenga tower, the spine is too stable. Briefly, there are three major ligaments running down the length of the spine which prohibit forward movement of the disc, added to this, there are various tendons, ligaments and muscles either side of the spine which stop it from slipping to the side either.
stiffness. The herniation itself can press up against nerves which pass in the vicinity of the herniation. This causes pain, numbness or tingling sensations down the path of the nerve. The most common location for a disc herniation is the L5/S1 region, at the base of the spine. The nerve emerging from the L5/S1 level of the spine is one of five roots contributing to the sciatic nerve, and compression of this nerve causes sciatica. Symptoms: As mentioned, symptoms include pain and inflammation around the area where the herniation occurred. You will most likely experience sciatica, or pain down the back of the leg. The sciatic pain may increase when you cough, sneeze or pass a stool. These symptoms may come on quickly, due to an injury, or they may come on slowly over time. Treatment:
I was taught that the discs of the spine are like rolled up belts, made of cartilage. Each disc has a soft core called the nucleus. Now cartilage, or the belt in our example, is tough stuff, but doesn’t handle compression very well. When compressed, cartilage tends to crack. So let’s place a large brick on the front of the belt. The force of the brick pushes down on the belt and forces the soft middle against the back of the belt. As this is repeated over many years, due to bad posture or bending, cracks start to appear in the belt, until finally the belt gives way and the middle pushes out. This is a herniated disc. The body reacts to a herniation by causing inflammation, and inflammation causes pain and

I will always treat what I find. The most common course of treatment would be to reduce the inflammation around the herniated disc. This includes treating those muscles which have become tense and spasmodic. I treat the disc directly by gently moving the spine in a way which widens the gap through which the nerves pass, reducing the pressure on the nerve and reducing the sciatic pain. About Keri Donnellan I became a Jazzercise instructor in March 1993, 19 years ago, after finding an exercise program that I loved and suited me down to the ground. No-one cared what I looked like (3 stone heavier than now), nor did they care if I got it wrong. Everyone was there to have the same fun and get fit. I became a substitute instructor, which means I covered for other class owners when they were on holiday or ill, sometimes travelling up to an hour and a half to go and teach class. After 15 years of working for other people, I had my daughter, and decided to become a class owner myself. My classes started in Aylesbury & Tring in September 2006, with me teaching 6 classes a week. No mean feat with a year old baby to look after too ! Very quickly I trained up my first substitute instructor, Tamsin, who could then help me out and I could open more classes. In 4.5 years, I have been very lucky and have 10 great girls working for me and I have gone from 6 classes a week to 28. I have also just achieved top rank status within the Jazzercise

Friends in need The British winter is a wonderful thing: sunshine and mild temperatures one day and several degrees below the next. If you think that is confusing for us gardeners, then imagine what it’s like for the wildlife.
Christmases ago which has proved very popular with solitary bees and ladybirds alike.
For me, gardening is as much about the creatures which inhabit my plot as it is about the plants. In view of this, I like to make life as easy as possible for my little garden friends.
Top Bird-feeding Tips
I’m not the tidiest gardener in the world, but this turns out to be a bonus in my quest to help the local wildlife. So you might think I’m lazy for not cutting down bare stems and soggy seed heads, but in fact I am providing luxury accommodation for over-wintering insects. These in turn attract certain birds and other insects for whom the luxury accommodation is more akin to a fast-food establishment. When you trim hollow-stemmed plants, cut them into 10cm lengths and bind a few together into a bunch. Push this bunch of stems into a hedge or a sheltered corner and insects will find it...a sort of ‘build it and they will come’ construction... with apologies for the Kevin Costner film reference there! You can also buy some wonderful purposebuilt constructions. My mother bought me an impressively titled ‘insect condominium’ a few

A gardening friend of mine gave me a great tip. He suggested placing a couple of ladybird shelters near my rose bushes so that when the warmer weather finally comes, early aphids will be gobbled up by the ladybirds and their larvae. Start with the basics A good quality sunflower seed based mix in a tubular feeder is a great starting point and will attract a wide variety of birds. Add some extras Peanuts are a good source of protein and fat and are very popular. Raisins and apple chunks on a platform will attract blackbirds, thrushes and other fruit-lovers. Fat or suet is highenergy and gratefully received by many species during colder weather. Niger seed in small feeders will attract shy goldfinches if hung in a quieter part of the garden. Check your hygiene Feeders should be clean and mould-free or they may spread disease. Don’t forget water Fresh water is really important, especially if temperatures are below freezing. Safety first Consider placing stickers on patio doors to reduce the risk of collisions. Protect birds from cats by hanging the feeders high enough and removing any potential hiding places nearby.

Small businesses will lead the way in 2013, says company whose tenants already employ 1000 people Milton Keynes will boom in 2013, says the town’s largest serviced business premises provider, as the number of people employed in its units tops 1000 at the close of 2012. UK’S leading low carbon vehicle event returns to Millbrook Cenex, the UK’s centre of excellence for low carbon and fuel cell technologies, will host its sixth annual Low Carbon Vehicle (LCV2013) event on 4 and 5 September at Millbrook Proving Ground.
