POSITIVE LIVING
How much do you need to feel happy? From a very young age we learn we need money to purchase what we want to feel happy, things such as sweets, new toys, games and more toys. We are taught to wait when money is short and we are spoilt when its flow is abundant. We see the struggles of our parents, their highs and their lows. We find work in our adolescence to pay for what we need, things that we think will make us happy or help us fit in with the rest of the crowd. Yet the truth is that at no point do we check that we’ve reached the place of our efforts. The more money we get the more we seem to want, not because we need, but because somewhere deep inside we want to feel happy and whole, a feeling probably stemming back from early childhood. We equate love with acquisition – and acquisition as our right... We love how we feel when we shop and gain what we see and desire, but at what point do we finally stand back and say ‘we have enough’? (I am I) How much more do you need - to feel you have what you aimed for? (I am I) Fashion trends are not the friends we believe them to be. Very quickly we can feel shabby and out of date, when in truth we really are not. We work very hard for the wages we earn, but do we spend them as well as we think? We are often caught up in the game of wanting more, when we have more than we need and more than we really ever wished. Money and finance aside – what are the real pleasures you have in your life? Family and friends? Love and relationships? Holidays? The chance of a day or a week to do nothing, to switch off and remove yourself from the hustle and hassles of the demands of normal daily life? Do you live to eat out or to drink in special places? Do you like the outdoors? Do you travel, ride or run? Do you have expensive hobbies that keep you wanting more and need you to then work harder to sustain them? This long list goes on – and it’s different for all... Life is fun. If you dread each new day before it even occurs then you need to look a little deeper to see why. You create your own life – day by day. No-one owns you. No-one rules you. You are free. You can have the life you choose in any format that you want. Yes you have commitments but even those you chose yourself at some point. You are able to redraw and reshape as much as you want when you wish. (I am I) The ground you walk on is my body. You are free to take and utilize whatever you wish. The air you breathe is my living life force – my energy. You need it to sustain your present form. Everything you
see, touch, feel and hear – is yours as well, all free of charge without restriction or condition. What use is life on Earth – without someone to understand what being a living part of it means? (I am I) Money is necessary in so many, many ways, but you don’t need to let it be the master that you live your whole life for. Before the wars that gripped our country, life was simpler. People wanted less. The life we live today is more demanding. Technology has surged forward like a wave we can’t control, but what do we wish for next that we don’t already have? What more do we really need to make us happy? Time needs our full attention to make it mean all that it should. It’s easy to let it drain away unnoticed. (I am I) Life is a precious gift, that when it’s over, you’ll want more of… You are the one who chose to be here, so it falls to you to make it work. You have complete control of how you spend it. (I am I). You need money to buy the basics and the life style that you choose, but it’s easy to let it have complete control. You are the master ruling it – not the other way around. You work to gain your just reward, yet too often your just reward seems not enough. You don’t need money to make you happy for happiness is free. You don’t need money to buy more stuff for you probably have enough... Lessons learnt in times of youth can pull our strings. They lie dormant within our make-up undetected, buried deep. Money is not the monster but our attachment to it can be. We owe it to ourselves to set this straight, to own and find the happiness that we deserve. Time is rushing past. Life is too. How you choose to use it is up to you. (I am I) I will grant your every wish – perhaps not in the way you think, but because you ask – at some point it will be given. You attract all that you want, and much more than you need. Cause, effect and karma will do the rest. (I am I).

MP’s Diary
By Mark Lancaster, MP for Milton Keynes North
They say time flies when you are having fun and as we are over half way through this year, I can’t believe it. So far this year Milton Keynes has been named as a host for the Rugby World Cup in 2015, won top spot as one of the best places to do business in the country and seen dozens of achievements from every area of our community. It has been absolutely rammed packed and I am sure the next half of the year will just be as full and exciting. It was with pleasure that I supported Carers Week last month. Carers Week is a national campaign that tries to highlight and celebrate the work that 6.5million people do on a daily basis in the UK, an enourmous number. To truly get an idea of what carers do I recently joined a team for a day so I could learn first hand. I was staggered by the hard and selfless acts they carried out and with 1 in 8 people ending up caring for a loved one in some form I was pleased to be able to highlight Carers week. This hidden group of people give up their time, sometimes their jobs and often make life changing sacrifices to care for someone. I have seen firsthand the phenomenal work carers do and would like everyone to show support to our carers. Our community comes together for all sorts of reasons but it was with sadness Iain Stewart, MP for MK South and I held a community meeting with the MK Equality Council following the recent suspected arson attack on a local mosque. The emergency meeting saw forty community leaders and senior representatives from Thames Valley Police discussing the issues surrounding the crime with us
and was extremely constructive. I was particularly pleased to see the public show of support from across the different faith and community groups in Milton Keynes. We have a peaceful and cohesive community base here and I am hopeful we will continue to work together to keep it that way. I recently rolled up my sleeves and joined Great Linford Parish Council on a Tidy Up morning around the local shops. Joining 14 volunteers who came out to support the Parish Ranger Simon Bates we managed to gather 5 buckets of glass, 9 bags of recycling & 23 bags of litter all within a couple of hours. Also found were a car tyre and battery, 2x 5ltr full drums of used oil & 2 filters, a ratchet and claw hammer, Gas cylinder and a fish tank. The mind boggles! Events such as the tidy up are a great example of the improvements communities can make to their own area. I was really impressed with the commitment shown by all of those who took part and hope that that people will look out for similar events across Milton Keynes. Future litter picks in Great Linford are being held on 27th June, 26th July and 29th August and more information can be obtained by contacting the parish council, I for one intend to pop along and help out again! Many of you have also been in touch with regards to Willen Surgery. Having spoken to the Health Minister, who shares my concerns around the issue, I have written to the Chief Executive of NHS England asking for the surgery to be reopened. I am only too aware of how this has affected so many patients of the practice but please be rest assured that I am doing all I can to improve the situation. As always, if you would like to talk to me about anything or invite me to your organisation then do get in touch on 01908 686830.

Charity networking event for Ride High Kilimanjaro climb Stuart Bradley and Richard Carter, owners of local businesses Bobbyflash and Richard Carter Painting and Decorating Services, hope to take a step closer to reaching their fundraising target of £8,000 with a charity networking event at The Chrysalis Theatre on 29 August. The event is designed to help the duo to raise funds before they climb the world’s tallest freestanding mountain, Kilimanjaro, in September in aid of Milton Keynes children’s charity Ride High. “We are excited to announce that the entertainment for the evening will be provided by some of the London West End’s finest performers courtesy of Rosendale Productions. Guests will be in for a special treat,” said Stuart, director of graphic design agency Bobbyflash. “The Chrysalis Theatre in Willen is a great venue for this kind of event. There will be a business exhibition and some fantastic prizes on offer. Most of all we are looking forward to raising money for local disadvantaged children.” Bobbyflash sponsors Ride High, which helps these children by teaching them to look after and ride horses, with design services. Richard decided to join Stuart in the climb so that he can give something back to the local community. “We are fortunate that local businesses are willing to support the charity through this

event. Bartletts Tree Experts have offered a full size tree and planting service as a prize. Phil Fanning, head chef at the Michelin starred Paris House restaurant in Woburn, has also donated a ‘Be a chef for the day’ experience.” Milton Keynes catering outfit, Gem Bespoke Catering, is providing finger food for the event. “If you are a business that would like to offer a prize or you are interested in exhibiting at this event then we’d be grateful if you would get in touch. This will be a quality evening of networking, entertainment and fundraising. Tickets are only £20 so people should book their place as soon as possible,” concluded Stuart. Information is Beautiful! These days there is information everywhere. Every day, every hour, maybe even every minute we’re looking at and absorbing information from our phones, tablets, TVs…the list is endless. So the challenge for us is to translate and visualise all this information in an appealing and digestible way. After all, 50% of the brain is dedicated to visual functions, and images are processed faster than text. So, say hello to the Infographic! Whilst this is not a new idea, we’ve been sharing information visually for thousands of years, the internet and particularly social media, have given us the ability to access, create and crucially share vast amounts of information. And it is this sharing that is crucial from a marketing viewpoint. So, gone are long reports with reams of statistic data tables and lists, replaced with manageable chunks of visual understanding. And, if we can make people understand, they are going to find it useful and share it, getting your message across to potentially far more people. Infographics can tell a story,
12 mkflyers central
compare data sets or simply show something complicated in a dynamic and straight-forward way. Therefore a good infographic has a mixture of great design, a timely and relevant story, good data and shareability. And, people are sharing. US online news outlet Bitrebels ran a recent test which showed their infographics shared on Twitter got 832% more retweets than images and articles about similar subjects. Opposite is an infographic we recently did for F1 Consultancy. They had just reached their 20th Birthday and wanted to compare the IT landscape in 2013 with that in 1993. So research was key, finding reliable, accurate sources and then choosing a style that suited their brand and the subject matter. And over the coming months we’ll be doing more, from explaining a complex insurance product to showing the journey from planks of wood to bi-folding doors. We’d love to help you engage with your customers in this dynamic and exciting way too!

MP’s Diary
By Iain Stewart, MP for Milton Keynes South
A hugely enjoyable part of my role as MP is meeting pupils across the various primary schools in my constituency. I have committed to visit each school at least once during this Parliament.
I recently visited Queen Eleanor Primary School to have a look at their new library and to talk to the Year 6 children before their SATs tests. I was shown around the library by Phoebe Titchmarsh, Ellie Rose and Hailie Gover who are three of the children who have been trained to be librarians. It was a delight to answer questions from the Year 6 children – this ranged from why I became an MP to whether or not I liked One Direction – I do! Also, I visited Charles Warren Academy in Simpson and was enormously impressed with the changes in the school. The pupils were engaging, very polite and confidently greeted me by putting out their hands for a handshake. It was clear to see that a lot of hard work has gone into improving standards at the school and I pay tribute to all the staff for their efforts.
In addition to the school visits, I write to every pupil leaving Year 6, where the headteacher has agreed, to congratulate them on their achievement and to wish them success in secondary school. Completing a phase in life and starting a new one can be daunting for anyone and I believe it is really important to celebrate these young achievers. I was therefore pleased to visit Loughton Primary School where I had a chance to meet with the Year 6 pupils who have very high aspirations – a testament to the quality of teaching that they have received. Our emergency services play a very valuable role and I recently had the opportunity of going ‘behind the scenes’ with members of our local fire service. Steve Wells, Service Delivery Manager for Milton Keynes, kindly welcomed me to Bletchley Fire Station where I took part in a training exercise with fire-fighters. I acted as the “casualty” as Red Watch carried out an extrication - the process by which injured people are safely removed from crashed vehicles and handed into the care of paramedics. I also accompanied fire-fighters as they carried out a safety check in a local resident’s home and fitted free smoke alarms. Fire-fighters do so much more than just putting out fires, but deal with a wide range of risks and emergencies in the community. I am grateful to the team of the Bletchley Fire Station for the very useful experience.
Residents in Milton Keynes are entitled to book a free home safety check or a free smoke alarm fitting. If any readers feel they could benefit from either of these they should get in touch with Buckingham Fire and Rescue on 01296 744477 or via their website: www.bucksfire.gov.uk/ BucksFire/free.htm As ever, I would like to hear from you so please get in touch using the details below.

Capability vs Conduct When an employer is dealing with a situation due to an employee falling short of the standards expected of them within a workplace, it is important to remember that disciplinary and capability procedures are there to encourage an improvement in an employee’s work performance or conduct. Yes, there are circumstances, where appropriate, that could result in dismissal, but this should usually be the last resort.
Before embarking on formal action, the employer must establish whether the employee is falling short of the standards because of their capability or conduct. Put simply, Capability is CAN’T and conduct is WON’T. For this reason, it is advisable to always have a separate disciplinary procedure and a capability procedure. Capability procedures, sometimes referred to as Inefficiency procedures, are invoked when even after appropriate training an employee CAN’T achieve or maintain the performance standards necessary for their job. Disciplinary or Conduct procedures are invoked when through carelessness, negligence or wilfulness the employee WON’T perform to the required standards of conduct. To determine which procedure to follow, hold a fact finding interview with the employee. Check what their understanding
16 mkflyers central
of what is expected of them is. Don’t assume they know. Allow the employee to tell you. If they can clearly explain and demonstrate they know how they should be performing or behaving then ask them why their performance/conduct falls short then? This would be a conduct issue. If they were unable to explain satisfactorily or demonstrate the standard they should be working to, then perhaps they require further coaching or training to achieve the standard expected. In this instance follow the inefficiency/capability procedure. Finally there are varying levels for conduct, so again ensure your disciplinary procedure is clear on what constitutes misconduct and gross misconduct so that your employees understand. The reason for this is to ensure natural justice and fairness prevails, certainly this is what an Employment Tribunal may well end up considering whether any sanctions applied including dismissal were fair. If the correct procedure was not followed, even if a warning or dismissal is the right decision, then the sanction ultimately becomes unfair.

Small businesses will lead the way in 2013, says company whose tenants already employ 1000 people Milton Keynes will boom in 2013, says the town’s largest serviced business premises provider, as the number of people employed in its units tops 1000 at the close of 2012. Bucks Biz, with over 400,000 square feet of space and 150 tenants in Bletchley and Denbigh, says it is already planning more units to cope with the expected growth in demand and bringing forward plans to develop extra space at the huge Interchange House in Howard Way. “Our units currently provide work for around a thousand people and we have seen that figure rise steadily,” said Dominic Muscat, a director of the company that owns the business.

“As Milton Keynes business booms, led by small businesses, we are already identifying potential new units that can be converted to provide the premises needed for small companies to thrive without hassle.” Bucks Biz, with units all over Milton Keynes, is renowned for straight talking and dealing; not hiding costs and not charging for many of the little things that keep businesses ticking, but which can be annoying to the point of distraction. “We really believe that if our customers are happy, then they’ll be free to get on with their businesses, which in turn will expand,” added Dominic. Improve your cashflow with our direct debit referral scheme Referral Programme Direct Debit is a very effective way of collecting regular payments on time with the full overview of your monthly cashflow. It can be an important and integral part of your business and MK Flyers knows just how to deliver the right solution whether you are a Sole Trader, Partnership or Limited Company. Cashflow is king! Speak to any business advisor, coach or successful entrepreneur and they will all tell you that cashflow is vital to a business. Direct Debit gives you this benefit whilst keeping you in control. Value for Money If you are making regular collections from customers or subscribers then the online management system will allow you to keep your costs and resources down giving you more time on your business. Keep your customers You can now offer your customers the opportunity to spread the costs of your service or products across the year with this system. This should allow more
customers to spend money with you and increase customer loyalty. The Direct Debit Guarantee also protects your customers giving them peace of mind when using your services. Reporting functions MK Flyers working with our partner London & Zurich can offer you full on-line management of client accounts and enables you to have full control of your payment collection scheme. Is your business right for Direct Debits? Many businesses are interested in using the Direct Debit scheme to collect monies due from their own customers but the banks normally advise that they are too small to be considered as an originator of Direct Debits. Working with London and Zurich, however, we have been able to negotiate a special arrangement and can offer it to you in a very cost effective way.
