This month sees the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and I am very excited about the events which are springing up around the country and in particular, in Milton Keynes. It seems we have all grasped the spirit of celebration as the queen approaches her 60th year in reign.
With street parties taking place across Milton Keynes, a concert at Buckingham Palace, a flotilla down the Thames (which will see Milton Keynes being represented by the Mayor) and a four day bank holiday weekend, it is fair to say we will be celebrating in a royally good way. I will be visiting a number of events in Milton Keynes but am particularly looking forward to the street party at Fishermead. I had my own taster of the Diamond Jubilee when I was given the opportunity to travel on the Royal Train. The train, which was made for the Queen’s Silver Jubilee, was made and is still maintained in Wolverton. During the journey I met Lawrence Robertson and Lorraine Clark, who both live in Milton Keynes and have been responsible for maintaining the famous train for several years.
On the theme of celebration, I was delighted to be invited to attend the Grand Opening of the Aston Martin works which is based in Newport Pagnell. A fan of James Bond, I have always admired the cars on screen but I took great delight to go and view some of the exceptionally beautiful models on display. I know it is of great pride to many that the factory has been based in Newport Pagnell for so long and I am very pleased that although the production has stopped in the area, their presence will still be felt. Last month also gave me the opportunity to meet the Youth Members of Parliament and their deputies for Milton Keynes, along with my colleague from MK South, Iain Stewart. I am always dazzled by the knowledge and passion displayed by the young people I meet, but Christopher Curtis, Elizabeth Beale, Solomon Moussa and Dan Morrison were particularly impressive. With topics as far ranging as Sex education to bus services, Iain and I were kept on our toes and should no doubt continue to be so as they all rise through the ranks. For those unaware of the Youth Parliament and its work, MYP’s are elected annually and once elected meet with local decision makers to ensure the views of young people are listened to properly. They also run events to raise young people’s political awareness and recently have been invited to debate in the chamber of the House of Commons once a year. It is a fantastic opportunity aimed at engaging young people in politics and judging by the meeting I had with the local MYP’s, it is certainly working. I would like to wish Her Majesty a very happy Diamond Jubilee and hope you enjoy the this month, in whatever way you may be celebrating. I hope you are able to use the opportunity to come together in your local communities to celebrate how fortunate we are to have a Queen that is so dedicated to our country and that has served us all for the past 60 years. Whilst on the train they were both presented with their Diamond Jubilee Medals for their continued service. It was also an opportunity for RailCare to present a member of the royal household with their Jubilee gift to the Queen. A representative from the palace received a painting, which depicts Her Majesty with the Duke of Edinburgh in front of the famous train. It was a great honour to travel on the train and I am delighted to have learnt about a further link Milton Keynes has with the royal household.

How to Cook Your Very Own
Stuffed Sweet Potato Jackets Method 1 Preheat oven to 220c and Pierce the Skin of the sweet potatoes with a fork, then microwave on high for 6-8minutes turning half way through. 2 Once done take out the microwave and half, scoop out the flesh into a bowl - being careful not to break the skin be careful they will be hot. 3 Now brush the skins with olive oil and place in oven to crisp the skins in the mean time chop the bacon and spring onion and fry in the oil for 2-3 minutes or until cooked, then add the cooked bacon and spring onion along with the rest of the ingredients to the sweet potato, add seasoning at this stage if desired – it shouldn’t need salt. 4 Mix it all together and spoon into the empty skins, sprinkle with a little parmesan place under the hot grill until golden and heated through.

Small businesses will lead the way in 2012, says company whose tenants already employ 1000 people Milton Keynes will boom in 2012, says the town’s largest serviced business premises provider, as the number of people employed in its units tops 1000 at the close of 2011. Gardening in drought conditions Maurice Rust, Frosts Garden Centre, Woburn Sands In the press and on almost every news bulletit mentions the ‘drought’ we are experiencing at the moment, encouraging house holders and gardeners to save water. The hosepipe ban means that we can not use a hosepipe to water any plants that we may have in our gardens or our lawns let alone wash our cars etc. However there are several ways we can help our gardens through this dry period. The following are just a few simple steps that will help your garden through this period • One of the best ways to save water is to install a water butt to catch rain water that falls on to our homes, garages, garden sheds or greenhouse, this natural water is an added bonus to your plants as it will not contain any chemicals that have been added to purify it for human consumption • When we run the hot tap for warm water to wash the dishes we often have to run the tap for a couple of minutes before the cold water runs hot, save this cold water to containers of plants in the home, greenhouse or conservatory • Water plants in the cool of the evening when the sun has set or is low in the sky, this will help reduce water loss to the plant through transpiration. When plants are watered in the heat of the day much of the water that you put on the soil just simply evaporates into the air • Mulch around your trees, shrubs and herbaceous plants with composted leaves, garden compost, wood chips or chipped bark • If you have an allotment place old carpet tiles or old carpet cut into strips between your rows of plants, this will lead to moisture not being lost though evaporation from the soil. It also helps reduce weed germination, it may look unsightly in your garden or allotment but it will lead to less work long term • The use of ornamental gravel and slate chippings will also help retain moisture in the soil as well be a barrier against ‘slugs and snails’ infestations in your garden or on the top of containers • Dig in to your soil lots of compost organic matter or any inexpensive peat based compost, all of this will help retain moisture in your soil

• I f you have a small garden, a large garden or an allotment, hoe your soil weekly to avoid cracks appearing in the soil, through cracks in the soil water evaporate more quickly •W hen tending your garden borders do not stand on the soil as this only leads to soil compaction •M ake sure you regularly remove any weeds from your garden as weeds take up precious water that you wont for your garden plants • I f you are planting up new containers or hanging baskets – use compost that contains water retaining gel. This compost is available in Garden Centres and DIY stores as is Water Retaining Gel that can be purchased separately • P lacing your containers in the shade will also help retain moisture in the soil • L ining the inside of a wooden or terracotta container when newly planting up will also help retain water in your container during the summer months, much of the water in a container is lost through the sides of containers, but do make sure you leave the drainage holes free in the base of the container • Place your containers in saucers to retain any surplus water that drains through the drainage holes in the base of the container that can be absorb by the plants later in the day • L awns, long periods of dry conditions can cause considerable problems for grass, there are a few simple steps that can help your grass. Lift the cutting blades of your mower so the grass blades are left longer, do not mow the grass as often as you would in a normal summer. Keep off it as much as possible and fill any cracks as soon as they appear with in expensive ‘Multi-purpose compost’ – moisture is lost through cracks in evaporation • Grow shrubs with silver leaves, summer bedding plants that like the sun and drier soil conditions, plants such as Osteospermuns, Geraniums, Cineraria maritima, Helichysum and Gazainia I hope through reading this article it will help
