t’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes - not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. A
nyone fancy going topless this summer??
This is a great little car! It’s got the lot; a great engine, it’s a convertible so you can get a tan in the summer, and there is even still room in the back for an adult if you need it. The turbocharged petrol engines on offer include a 103bhp 1.2, two 1.4s with 120bhp or 158bhp (the latter is also supercharged), and a 2.0 in 208bhp and 261bhp outputs for the GTI and R. The lower-powered 1.4 is our overall favourite thanks to its mixture of flexibility and economy, but the more powerful units are more fun. Both the turbo diesel choices, the 103bhp 1.6 and the 138bhp 2.0, are sound buys for high mileage drivers. We drove the 1.6TDI and it was great. The ride is also very impressive - chopping off the roof can have a massive effect on ride and handling but it hasn’t on this. They have done it really well and with the roof up you wouldn’t know it’s a soft top with very little road noise. The Golf Cabriolet is a genuine four-seater; two adults can sit in the back without feeling cramped. Alternatively, you can drop the rear seats to supplement the boot, which has a modest
250-litre capacity and a small opening. The roof folds down in just 9.5 seconds, and can be operated with the car travelling at speeds of up to 19mph. There are three trims: S, SE and GT. Every version has air-con, alloy wheels, a DAB radio, Bluetooth connectivity and a fully electric roof. SE adds cruise control and parking sensors, while GT and R models add sports seats, style upgrades and sports suspension. Having previously been driving a new SLK I did think I would be disappointed in this but I wasn’t - over all it looks good, drives well, and has a good standard spec. Score 8/10

apanese Maples are surely one of the most beautiful trees. They produce the wonderful foliage in a variety of colours. Add to this the fact that they never become too large and you have a tree which could have been specifically designed for small suburban plots. Acer palmatum is the base variety. It’s a handsome enough small tree with neatly cut green leaves, but the ‘wow’ factor really sets in when we get to some of its varieties. My favourite is “Atropurpureum”. It is an elegant tree which only reaches 10 feet / 3m tall in 15 years. Its leaves are crimson when they open then turn a rich shade of burgundy as they mature. It’s beautiful in any position but for maximum impact plant it where you will see the sun shine through the leaves. The feathery-leaved varieties are also stunning. Their slightly weeping habit gives them a graceful appearance. “Dissectum” is plain green, while “Dissectum Atropurpureum” is a dusky plum colour.

For full sun Acer palmatum “Bloodgood” holds the red colour of its leaves best. For a shadier spot try the more delicate “Orange Dream” which opens with fresh yellow-orange spring growth and turns lime green in summer. Acers do prefer a rich, slightly acidic soil, but fortunately for those of us with less-than-perfect growing conditions many varieties grow well in pots. Acer palmatum “Little Princess” would be my first choice. It is such a pretty plant with small, bright green leaves edged with deep red. Being a dwarf variety it will only reach 1.5m / 5 ft and it produces a lovely display of red foliage in the autumn as a bonus. To grow a Japanese Maple in a pot use a large container and a John Innes No.2 potting compost. Every spring remove the top few inches of compost and replace it with fresh. This top-dressing will ensure that the plant stays healthy and vigorous. All maples prefer shelter. Persistent cold winds dry the leaves and turn them brown. They are also quite thirsty plants and it is important not to let the roots dry out. Really, in spite of their exotic appearance they are not at all tricky to grow, and they lend an air of elegant sophistication to any garden.

his last month has demonstrated once again the wonderfully positive can-do character of MK. I was delighted to support Destination Milton Keynes, in their quest to get residents, visitors and businesses to spread their love for Milton Keynes as they hosted the second annual #LoveMK Day on Thursday 1 May 2014. Along with many others, I took to Twitter in an attempt to get #LoveMK trending as it did last year. There is further progress surrounding MKFM’s campaign for a permanent FM licence. Following the debate I led in Parliament a few weeks ago, I hosted a meeting in Westminster between MKFM and representatives from Ofcom. It was a very positive discussion and I am hopeful that, with continued work, MKFM will receive their FM licence much earlier. I recently supported ‘Catch The Bus Week’, which urged people to try and use the bus instead of their car for certain journeys. The use of public transport is incredibly important and I’m pleased that many across Milton Keynes saw the benefit of bus travel. Our entrepreneurial flair was very much evident when I attended The Buckinghamshire and Milton Keynes Young Enterprise Company of the Year final at the Open University. I saw a great range of young entrepreneurs battling it out and heard great success stories from across the county – I wish them all the best of luck.

This Government has made a substantial investment in renewing and expanding the nation’s infrastructure. I believe there is a real need to get more young people into engineering so that we will have the long-term skills base for projects such as the HS2 Skills Academy which I hope will come to Milton Keynes I raised this recently at Prime Minister’s Questions. Small businesses will lead the way in 2014, says company whose tenants already employ 1000 people

Milton Keynes will boom in 2014, says the town’s largest serviced business premises provider, as the number of people employed in its units tops 1000 at the close of 2013.
Bucks Biz, with over 400,000 square feet of space and 150 tenants in Bletchley and Denbigh, says it is already planning more units to cope with the expected growth in demand and bringing forward plans to develop extra space at the huge Interchange House in Howard Way. “Our units currently provide work for around a thousand people and we have seen that figure rise steadily,” said Dominic Muscat, a director of the company that owns the business. “As Milton Keynes business booms, led by small businesses, we are already identifying potential new units that can be converted to provide the premises needed for small companies to thrive without hassle.”

Willen Hospice holistic pamper day

ocal therapists are putting on a Pamper Day to support Willen Hospice on Sunday June 29th 2014.
Reflexology, manicures, Swedish massage, gong sessions, Reiki and angel cards are just some of the treatments on offer at The Well in Willen. ilton Keynes has a thriving korfball community, but most people won’t have a clue what it is!
Korfball is a bit like netball and bit like basketball - but better!* It’s played in mixed sex teams of 4 men and 4 women on a court similar sized to basketball. Korfball is played indoors during the winter and outdoors during the summer. The aim of the game is to work with your team-mates to get the ball through the hoop (Korf) Men can only mark men and women can only mark women and unlike netball, you can’t shoot if your defender is within touching distance of you – so you need to move quick! So now you know what korfball is, why not come down and give it a go? MK Lakers Korfball club are always looking for new and enthusiastic members, we train twice a week on a Monday and Wednesday and play league matches on a Sunday. It’s a superb way to get fit and meet lots of new people.
