M K: Tell us about your start as a photographer? CJ: I?ve been shooting for about 2 years now. I started just after the birth of my daughter, Maddie. I got my first DSLR because I just wasn?t happy with the quality of my iPhone pics. You
M K: What are some learning curves you are experiencing? CJ: Oh god? There are so many. I?m still so new to this. Currently, I?m working on quality over quantity. I?m learning to be more deliberate with my camera. As a new photographer shooting in the digital era, I?ve had a ?spray & pray? type of mentality. I would take hundreds & hundreds of photos in hopes that I got a few good shots. That is a very bad habit that leaves too much to chance & really isn?t a creative process. I?m learning now to really visualize the shoot ahead of time, to set the mood & the scene and to tell a specific story. Now, when I press the shutter, I?m trying to do it with a clear intention. I?m trying to capture a specific moment & emotion. That?s being a creator & that is HARD WORK. I am still very behind on this curve, but my sights are set!
know, nothing but the best for daddy?s baby girl! It was a Nikon D5500. I was so excited to take ?real? photos of my newborn daughter, but sadly they were terrible. I didn?t have a clue as to what I was doing, but I busted my butt to figure it out. I spent hours; hours on YouTube watching videos & then ran out to put in the practice. It took a while, but I finally got a photo of my daughter that wasn?t completely amateurish. I knew then that I had found something that I loved. I was almost 40 years old and finally knew what I wanted to be when I grew up.
M K: What are your goals for your future in photography? CJ: I never intended photography to become a business for me, but now that it has, I want it to be known as the best when it comes to how my clients feel about themselves, the service they were provided, the products they received & how they were treated throughout the process. It?s very important to me that everyone I work with feels respected, appreciated & valued. I want my clients to walk away with a greater sense of self-love & self-worth.
M K: What inspires you to shoot? CJ: Honestly, my clients. Being in front of a camera (especially when shooting boudoir or nude) is a VERY vulnerable place to be. It takes a huge amount of courage to do what they do. I primarily shoot boudoir. I didn?t seek it out, but I?m so, so happy I found it. I initially stayed away from it because I didn?t understand it. I thought it was just sexy photos & I wasn?t really interested in that. Instagram is filled with photographers taking sexy photos. I wanted to do stuff
M K: What feedback to the industry would you like to give? CJ: I don?t know that I?m really qualified to offer any feedback to the industry, but I would like to say thank you to those that have shown me kindness & support along the way. I hope I?ll be able to do the same when I?m in a position to do so. There is a great community of creatives in DFW & I love getting to meet & collaborate with as many as possible. You?re all making me better. Thank you!
that evoked emotion, that had a purpose and that made my clients feel better about themselves. Boudoir photography accomplishes that; much more. Seeing the impact it has on my clients is profound. Watching someone come in to my studio carrying years of ?self-hate? baggage, completely torn down by the world telling them they aren?t pretty enough, skinny enough or whatever other lies they?ve believed about themselves, but leave with their head held high with a newfound love & respect for their own bodies is priceless. As a husband & father, I want the women in my life to see themselves as the queens they are. As a photographer, I want the same for my clients.

M K: What are some challenges you have overcome? CJ: There have been a lot, but probably none that are uncommon to any new creative. I think the biggest was finding my place, my voice. When I first got started, I shot everything I could. I was just trying to grow & improve, but I didn?t have much direction. It was a little chaotic. It still is at times, HaHa, but now I feel like I have a path to walk. Now my quest for growth & improvement has some focus & purpose. It is a really great feeling to know you?re at least heading in the right direction? M K: Why did you decide to work with Mkovah Magazine? CJ: I love their focus on working with local talent to help them grow their brand & improve their skill set. They have a purpose beyond creating beautiful content & selling ad space. I love that.
