CAUSE: Santa Monica is a magnet for residents out side of the area to come to the city for work, shopping, entertainment. EFFECT: Affordable housing Lack of parking, traffic Growth and development
Instructor: Gerard Smulevich
Transverse section showing vertical circulation Western wind is dominant and has higher accurance compared to winds from other directions Hybrid Sectional Model Climatology: Average seasonal wind direction PROGRAM: The structure is derived from traffic, population density and solar orientation issues. Sun shines at a more acute angle in summer than spring and winter combined
The train station is located at the heart of Santa Monica, where traffic is a big issue, considering the fact that it is next to the Colorado exit, therefore additional program space is available under the station. Providing underground horizontal circulation across streets speeds and clears up the pedestrian traffic. Additional to the train station, the structure provides space for convention center and hotel to accommodate the needs for the people utilizing the space. ADA accesable ramps throughout the structure.

Santa Monica, California- an attraction zone for local vistors and regoinal travelers for shopping, entertainment and dining is facing overdevelopment and traffic congestion. The new EXPO. line staion will have an impact on how travelers move around in the city’s most visited locale. The growing traffic problem in Santa Monica will partly be migrated with the MTA Expo. line to ferry communters. The train station has an estimated ridership of 52600 travelers going in and out of the city daily. The terminus station would also accommodate tourists a place to experience the new and redefined urban culture with the building’s “mainboard interconnections” that links various different program spaces into one. The Vertical Garden, predominantly located at the southern part of the building, helps to regulate interior temperature by taking most of sun’s solar radiation. It works in parallel with the solar chimney, located at the top of the structure, to circulate air passively.

South sloped chimney in order to trap solar radiation The “Mainboard positioned to advantage of sunlight, reduce the need for artificial light during the day. The structure will feature a double glass facade that will enhance energy effieciency by reducing cooling costs and allow natural air flow into the building.
