FUTURE OF URBAN ACCESS TO FRESH FOOD A start-up agrIcultural company asked MKThink to imagine some provocative concepts for the future of urban farming, exploring the value model for various designs.
RESEARCH
What’s out there and what’s coming? We start with discovering the world around a problem. We define the connections to that problem and we start to imagine how the world will change, and how the problem and connections will change. We measure, analyze, and model those futures in order to understand what new problems will arise as well as new solutions. This sets the stage for new ideas that will meet near term needs while proactively positioning for a desired future.

TESTING HIGH-PERFORMANCE PLATFORMS IN HAWAII MKThink worked with Hawaii Natural Energy Institute to test classrooms in different climates around Hawaii, measuring energy and environmental performance.
INCUBATION
How do we develop and test solutions? We start with a “low-resolution, high-learning” approach to incubating new products or services. We figure out an appropriate experiment design within the constraints of what currently exists, and we focus on key areas of learning that will either validate our assumptions or change our direction before we’re fully committed. We then design, visualize, and realize our prototypes, often in conjunction with a lean business plan, to quickly and accurately test its potential.

CREATING A CLEANTECH COMPANY OF THE YEAR In 2009, Project FROG, a company incubated by MKThink, was awarded Cleantech Company of the Year for its innovative kit-of-parts building systems that revolutionized how high-performance buildings were designed, manufactured, delivered, operated, and removed.

How we roll-out and scale into a market? We focus on a key entry point to the market, narrowing our solution in the near term to increase audience understanding while maintaining the ability to expand once the solution matures. This requires a funder who is aligned with the market strategy, a team that can grow dynamically as the needs shift from product development to sales and delivery, and operational bandwidth to execute. Once that’s taken care of it, it’s one hell of a ride!
