Memorial Park McMillan Sand Filtration Plant, Washington, DC

“Memory- the capacity of a substance to return to a previous state or condition after having been altered or deformed Design proposes weaving past and present landscapes while creating new landscape form to support civic habits and wildlife habitat

34 New Towers represent historic height (180’ topo line) and mark intersection of present and historic layers. The height (180’) varies due to site’s slope. Each tower provides access from ground level to underground level and offers different opportunities for users: cafes, restaurants, museums, picnic areas, observation areas, bus stops shelters, shops, clock towers and playgrounds.

Plant selection made to provide year-round food, cover and nesting structure for wildlife habitat. Meadows: Andropogon virginicus (broomsedge) Elymus canadensis (canada wild rye) Elymus hystrix (bottlebrush grass) Panicum amarum (coastal panic grass) Schizachyrium scoparium (little bluestem) Sorghastrum nutans (Indiangrass) Eastern White Pine (Pinus strobus) adapts particularly well to soil containing sand. Design weaves two historic pasts: forest (19th century) and underground architecture of sand filtration plant (20th century).

River Birch (Betula nigra) Design weaves two historic pasts: an unnamed tributary of Tiber Creek (19th century) and sand filtration of water for Washington, DC inhabitants (20th century) and proposes River Birch alley with drinking fountains.

topography

Project examined four central sites within Washington, DC’s quadrants and selected North East quadrant site for proposed “J” Street. Route 295 is located on top of a buried Tributary of Annacostia river and contains alluvium soils, usually found along river banks. Design proposed to improve roadscape of Route 295 and ecological functions of area by excavating urban fill and partially daylighting stream.
