Welcome once again to Bangkok for the ninth edition of the Oakwood Bangkok International Rugby 10’s. As you may well know, the entire weekend is geared towards raising funding to support our adopted cause Changing Lives Forever which through junior rugby geared towards children from disadvantaged communities gives support to many underprivileged children and which is further elaborated by Sopo Fakua on page 8. None of this is possible without the support of three key groups – our sponsors, the players/officials that participate over the weekend and our organizing committee and volunteers. To our so sponsors, thanks are extended to Oakwood Asia Pacific for their continued support to our tournament, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, Tenderloins Sports Bar and Grill, Asia Pacific Breweries, ACH Management, Bangkok Nursing Home, Jardine Shipping Services, Professional Portfolio International and KWC. Despite uncertainties in the lead up to the tournament due to the recent political situation in Thailand, we’ve had more interest this year than any other. As such, we see an increase from 24 to 28 teams in the senior teams and seven ladies touch teams. We look forward to welcoming some new faces as well as welcoming back many familiar ones! Thanks as always to our local and overseas referees many of whom have flown long distances and our expectation is that the high level of refereeing which is associated with the tournament is continued. To all teams play hard but fair and please be respectful towards our referees. Finally, a big thank you to my fellow organizers and our 2014 committee. Starting with our ladies, Linda Belonge for coordinating the ladies touch section and handling all media related issues and Nicole Fakaua and her team for Nak Suu liaison. Fellow Fat Boys Andrew McDowell for his expert assistance with all matters related to beverage and Bob Merrigan for his scheduling skills and dealing with all aspects related to the scoring and general tournament rules. Non Fat Chaps Ahmed Fawzi and the DHL Bangkok Lions for hosting and arranging all aspects of the junior section, David Viccars for assembling a great team of referees as well as providing input in a wide range of general tournament matters and Mike Laloli for production of this program. e welcome you all to the Land of Smiles and the city of Bangkok, the host city to one of the biggest sports tournaments in Thailand. My name is Sopo Fakaua and I am the director of a Rugby program called Changing Lives Forever (CLF). Our club name is the Nak Suu Tigers (Thai word for ‘Noble Warrior) and we work with underprivileged children in the slum communities of Bangkok. The purpose of the CLF program is to have a lasting impact in the lives of young people through rugby training and life skill development; building trust, hope, self-esteem and courage to impact and better their future. We believe rugby is a sport that will enable these young people to develop in a positive direction. The CLF rugby program has been running for a little over a year and we have had over 200 kids come through this program (weekly attendance averages about 100 kids) who get picked up and dropped off from four different slum communities around the city of Bangkok. The club helps provide opportunities for these kids to achieve more outside of their normal circumstances, discover the passion for the game and dream of what their future might become. In 2014 we have seen huge support from both the international and local Bangkok rugby community through coaching, health care resources, financial support and donations in kind. There are many expenses connected with running the club and we rely for funding soley on our own fundraising events and the support of the Bangkok International Tens (BIT). The major expense for the club is paying for transportation (which is 60 percent of the total cost), Food (Lunch and snacks are provided each week) and the rental of the football pitch. We were hoping that this might be something you would consider helping us with. In return for your sponsorship we would of course be willing to wear your logo on our club shirts and for you to be listed as our key sponsor on all our club literature and monthly newsletter. n behalf of all Old Bangkok Bangers it is my great pleasure to welcome all participants including players and supporters to the Oakwood Bangkok International Tens 2014 Tournament. This has become the premier rugby tournament in Thailand and one of the finest in South East Asia and is a credit to Eddie Evans’ vision and drive and his team of hard working volunteers. A colossal effort goes into organizing and running of a tournament of this size. It’s really great to see the response from teams - junior, mens, womens and veterans - from around the planet out on the paddock over the weekend. We hope that the Tournament inspires the players to greater heights of performance and continues to raise the profile of rugby in our community. Sponsorship has and continues to be essential to the development and growth of our club, enabling us to grow the game in Thailand whilst supporting many groups less fortunate than ourselves in the local community. elcome to Bangkok, Thailand and welcome to BIT International Youth Tournament 2014. The event this year has unfortunately been disrupted by protests in Bangkok and as such a reduced format has eventuated with a more ‘local’ feel. In 2014, we are hosting a total of 20 teams across the Under 10, 12, 14, 16 and 18 age groups. Although a reduced format has been arranged, the event still promises to be a fun-filled event with plenty of rugby action as well as other activities to keep all players active and busy after the games have been played. We wish all participants the best of luck over the next two days and trust that the games will be played in the true spirit of the game. Enjoy the action, be proud of your players, no matter what the result and remember that this tournament is there for the players. The primary aim of the tournament is to showcase the wonderful game of rugby, the promotion of fun, enjoyment and a love of all things rugby. And while the quality of rugby is important, so too is the ideal of “fair play” and this is encouraged strongly. I would like to thank all the committee members for their hard work, commitment and attention to detail in the organization of this tournament. Women’s Touch Tournament Representative
n behalf of the Oakwood Bangkok International Rugby Tens organizing committee and the Southerners Sports Club I’d like to welcome all international and local teams to the tournament. Last year wRepresentativeas the first time we ran the women’s touch alongside the mens rugby and it was very popular with the players as well as with other participants. We decided this year to give the ladies better access to the tournament and the tournament better access to the ladies, by moving the touch on to the main sports complex, where the rugby games are held. All touch players can now enjoy being a part of the main event and be right in the middle of the rugby, drinks, food, music and medical services (hopefully not needed!). This year we will be hosting a crew from the Rugby Asia Channel, which is televised on Setanta, so don’t be shy and catch the crew’s attention by standing out as a team. Please remember that the proceeds of the tournament go to the Nak Suu underprivileged children’s charity so please spend lots of money on drinks and support the charity’s fund raising efforts during the weekend. OURNAMENT DIRECTOR, BOB MERRIGAN reflects on the early years of the Bangkok International Rugby Tens and the interesting changes for this year’s event. Next year will be the tenth anniversary of what has become Asia’s premier social rugby weekend. Eddie Evans and I were both involved with the British Club Rugby Section and at the time which I recall was 2005, Eddie was our captain and I was the rugby section’s secretary, a position for many years referred to as “Scribe”. In 2003, the club had celebrated it’s centenary and the rugby section held a ‘Tens’ tournament which despite the SARS crisis had been a great success. Miraculously, aside from being a great weekend, Bruce Hill’s liver had managed to survive a four day drinking session accompanying the former England prop Jeff Probyn’s visit to Bangkok, Jon Prichard’s knees had held out allowing him to actually play something resembling rugby and one of the first large scale celebrity rugby dinners held in Bangkok had also been a hit! We all agreed that we wanted to find a position in the regional rugby calendar Martin Johnson & Bob Merrigan to repeat the event but this was not possible until 2006 when Eddie and the players presented the idea and wanted to organize The Bangkok International Rugby Tens. Essentially, for the first year there was only Eddie and I organizing the weekend with the only venue available being at Rangsit University and it involved a single pitch and sixteen teams. Thankfully these days there is a much larger organizing committee to share the workload and the tournament has substantially grown since that first year. In 2007, we held the tournament on the three fields at Bangkok Patana School and have been there ever since with the school adding in a fourth field in recent years and as you’ll see over the weekend, they have also recently upgraded the facilities as well. 2007 also saw the incorporation of the DHL Bangkok Lions Junior competition, and since that time the tournament has involved rugby being played simultaneously on all pitches from 8am to 6pm over two days. In recent years the tournament has typically involved around 45 junior teams from Under 8s to Under 18s, 24 senior teams including representation from Thai university teams, most expatriate teams playing in Thailand and many overseas teams. We have also always had around 8 veterans teams and we also showcase the Bangkok Bangers Ancients, which allows the over 50s to play for twenty minutes each year. 16 Oakwood Bangkok International Tens 2014
Ladies touch rugby (what a wonderful term that is!) was trialed last year and this year we have seven teams from around the region which as well as an increase in the senior teams to 28 for the first time means we will likely have over 1,650 players over the weekend of all shapes and sizes. These shapes and sizes range from under 8s to over 50s and along with coaches, parents and other spectators the tournament has grown into the best annual social weekend of rugby in Thailand and we are often told by overseas visiting teams the best social weekend within the regional rugby calendar (their words – not ours!). We focus very much on the social side though there are always at least four very good teams that can win the tournament every year. For the tournament format, we are one of the few and possibly the only tournaments that offer a minimum of at least two games on the Sunday, on top of the three games played by each team on the Saturday. For the men’s tournament this means that we not only have Cup, Plate and Bowl competitions but also Shield, Jug, and Tankard - this year’s additional teams also mean that we have introduced two additional gongs namely the Mug and the Tea Cup! For the Vets and Juniors we typically have only Cup, Plate and Bowl though this year with the Vets competition comprising seven teams, it will involve three games on both days that is played on a round robin basis. Famous players we’ve had participating in the tournament include Bob Skinstad, the former South African captain who visits us as frequently as his TV commitments enable him to, as well as other former South African players Robbie Fleck and Bryton Paulse. Former Tongan captain and NZ Sky TV commentator Willie Lose also visits as often as he can. This year sees former Wallaby Owen Finegan visit and play in the tournament for the first time. The rationale behind starting the event was to try to raise funding and develop a rugby specific complex that could be used by the local rugby community. After a few years, Eddie shared his thoughts about the time it would take to fulfil our long-term goal and we all agreed that this would take would take too long so we spent time looking for an exceptionally good cause to support. Once we found Nak Suu, we all bought into it big time and for most of us it is the most satisfying community projects we’ve been involved with in during our time with our various rugby clubs and from our various backgrounds and countries that prior to Thailand include Australia, Canada, England, New Zealand and the Netherlands.
As a number of you may know, Eddie played for Canada in three Rugby World Cups but he will not mind me telling you how proud he is of the Nak Suu rugby programme and he has been the driving force behind making the tournamanet it’s central fund raising event. All the other committee members and volunteers are equally as proud and through the tournament we typically raise enough funds each year to cover the majority of the running costs, which then leads to more fundraising activities throughout the rugby calendar. So the weekend is very much one of fund raising which involves just a little bit of rugby played by 1650 players!

HE CONTACT REFEREES FOR THIS TOURNAMENT have to cover as wide a skill set, and age range, pretty much as the players, except of course we don’t have officials aged 14! We will be referring from under 14 to veterans and most refs will do 7 or 8 games a day. Just as there would be little enjoyment (for everyone one else) and no point in having a team of current international players entering the event there is equally no point in having a panel made up of SANZAR or Six Nations referees unable to notice a crooked scrum feed – for example. At the same time we need a panel of refs with a range of languages so that communication with the players is made as easy as it can be – bearing in mind that communication with some players is tough no matter what language is employed. Also of course we have to be mindful of the need to develop Asian referees and tournament such as this are very important as it gives Asian referees the chance to experience styles of play and a quality of player they would not otherwise have a chance to officiate. Tournament Rules
The tournament shall follow the IRB laws of the game of Rugby Union and particularly the ten-a-side law variations. i.e.: • • •
The team that scores shall restart; All kicks at goal and at the kickoff shall be drop kicks; All infringements by a team taking a kickoff/restart shall result in a free kick to the opposition. • If a team elects to take a penalty kick at goal, a drop kick must be used and must be taken within 30 seconds of the nomination to kick at goal. The Laws of the Game apply with the following variations
Law 3: Numbers of Players – The Team i. Law 3.1: Maximum number of players on the playing area – each team must have no more than ten players on the playing area. ii. Law 3.4: Players nominated as substitutes - rolling substitutions within the registered playing squad of 18 players are allowed but note that the ongoing player must join the play at the half way line and may not move on to the field until the player being replaced has left the field of play – penalty kick awarded where the game would have restarted. .
Law 5: Time i. Law 5.1: Duration of a match - the duration of all pool games and quarter-finals is 7 minutes each half. The duration of all semi-finals is 8 minutes each half. The duration of all finals is 10 minutes each half. ii. Law 5.2: Half time - after half time the teams change ends. There is an interval of not more than two minutes for all pool games, quarter-finals and semi-finals. There is an interval of three minutes for all finals. iii. Law 5.6: Playing extra time – extra time will only be played in finals. Should a game be drawn in either the quarter-final or semi-final the team scoring first will advance. If there is a drawn match in the finals or should there be no score in either a quarter-final or semi-final, after a break of one minute, the extra time is played in periods of five minutes. After each period, the teams change ends without an interval. (Note – Law 6 - there should be coin toss before extra time. Law 9.4 - In extra time, the team that scores points first is immediately declared the winner, without any further play.) In addition to the above, as there is no illumination at the grounds there is a finite amount of game time that can be played on both days of the tournament. As such the Tournament Organizers may need to adjust the times outlined above in order for the competition to complete on time and within daylight. In such cases, team captains will be notified by the match referee before the start of an affected match of any adjustment to the playing time.
Law 9: Method of Scoring i. Law 9 B.1: Taking a conversion kick - the kick must be a drop kick. The kicker must take the kick within forty seconds of a try having been scored. The kick is disallowed if the kicker does not take the kick in the time 20 Oakwood Bangkok International Tens 2014
allowed. ii. Law 9 B.3: The opposing team - all the opposing team must immediately assemble close to their own 10-metre line.
Law 10: Foul Play When a player has been temporarily suspended (yellow card) suspension will be for two minutes.
Law 13: Kick-off and Restarts i. Law 13.2: Who takes the kick-off and restart kick after a score, the team that has scored kicks off with a drop kick which must be taken at or behind the centre of the half way line. If the kick is not taken as such, a free kick is awarded to the non-offending team at the centre of the half way line. ii. Law 13.3: Position of the Kicker’s team at the kick-off - all the kicker’s team must be behind the ball when it is kicked. If they are not, a free kick is awarded to the nonoffending team at the centre of the half way line. iii. Law 13.7: Kick-off of under ten metres and not played by an opponent - if the ball does not reach the opponents’ 10-metre line, a free kick is awarded to the non-offending team at the centre of the half way line. iv. Law 13.8: Ball goes directly into touch - the ball must land in the field of play. If it is kicked directly into touch, a free kick is awarded to the non-offending team at the centre of the half way line. v. Law 13.9: Ball goes into the in-goal - If the opposing team grounds the ball, or if they make it dead, or if the ball becomes dead by going into touch-in-goal or on or over the dead ball line a free kick is awarded to the nonoffending team at the centre of the half way line. In addition to the above, the team that is stated first in the match programme will kick off from right to left.
Law 20: Scrum i. Law 20.1: Forming a scrum - a scrum must have five players from each team at all times. All five players must stay bound to the scrum until it ends. Each front row must have three players in it, no more and no less. Two locks must form the second row by binding together so that their heads are between a prop and the hooker. Sanction: Penalty kick ii. Law 20.10: Ending a scrum - no player in the scrum may unbind to play the ball. Sanction: Penalty kick
Law 21: Penalty and Free Kicks i. Law 21.3: How penalty and free-kicks are taken - any player may take a penalty or free kick awarded for an infringement with any kind of kick: punt, drop kick but not a place kick. The ball may be kicked with any part of the leg from below the knee to the toe but not with the heel. ii. Law 21.4: Penalty and free-kicks options and requirements - no delay. If a kicker indicates to the referee the intention to kick at goal, the kick must be taken within thirty seconds of the penalty having been awarded. If the 40 seconds is exceeded the kick is disallowed, a scrum is ordered at the place of the mark and the opponents throw in the ball.
Tournament Rules In addition to the above the following Tournament Rules shall apply: a) A player sent off by a referee will serve a minimum of a one day ban. This may be increased to a tournament ban, if the tournament organizers feel it is warranted. b) A player who is sent to the sin bin shall return to his team bench and await permission to rejoin the game after the two minutes of playing time has expired. c) Each team will supply a touch judge for the game immediately following theirs. From the semi finals on, the referees will supply touch judges. d) A team which has less than 18 players because of injuries may borrow reserve players. They can borrow only players who have been registered prior to the event, from teams which have already been eliminated from the tournament, such teams being either in the same or lower level of the tournament (e.g. Cup, Plate, Bowl, Shield etc.). A reserve player may only be used as a replacement in a match and only after all members of the team originally registered have been deemed unfit to play, and must be retained in that team for the remainder of the tournament unless he is injured. e) No persons shall enter the playing area during a match except medically trained persons who may enter at any time to tend to an injured player. Team members acting as water boys may enter the playing area during a stoppage in play but only with the permission of the referee. They should wear distinctive clothing to identify themselves. f) There will be 28 teams in six pools of four teams. Each pool consists of one team seeded 1-7, one team ranked 8-14, then one team ranked 15-21 and one team ranked 22-28. g) All decisions regarding the seeding of teams are the sole responsibility of the tournament organizers h) Play will commence with the teams in each pool playing against each other in their respective pool. In pool games the first named team in the playing order will kick off playing from left to right. i) For semi final games the coin toss to be completed during the previous game; location at the announcers stand. j) In each pool game, two points will be awarded for a win and one point per team for a draw. There will be no extra time. k) On completion of the pool games there will be eight knockout competitions, the Cup, Plate, Bowl, Shield, Jug, Tankard, Mug and Tea Cup. l) The top team in each pool and the top second placed team i.e. a total of eight (8) will advance to the quarterfinals of Cup. The order of second placed teams will be based on points awarded first, then on tries scored, then points difference between for/against scored and should there be two teams from the same pool, the winner of the pool match. If there are two or more teams equal after this, then it will be decided by a draw from a hat. m) The four winning teams from the Cup quarter-finals will advance to the semi-finals of the Cup. The winners shall advance to the final of the Cup. n) The four runners up from the Cup quarter-finals will advance to the semi-finals of the Plate. The winners shall advance to the final of the Plate. o) The six remaining second placed teams and the top
two placed third teams will advance to the quarter-finals of the Bowl. The order of third paced teams will be based on points awarded first, then on tries scored, then points difference between for/against scored and should there be two teams from the same pool, the winner of the pool match. If there are two or more teams equal after this, then it will be decided by a draw from a hat. p) The four winning teams from the Bowl quarter-finals will advance to the semifinals of the Bowl. The winners shall advance to the final of the Bowl. q) The four runners up from the Bowl quarter-finals will advance to the semi-finals of the Shield. The winners shall advance to the final of the Shield. r) The five remaining third place teams and the top three best placed fourth placed teams will advance to the quarter-finals of the Jug. The winners will advance to the semi-finals of the Jug and the runners-up with play in the semi-finals of the Tankard. s) The remaining four teams will contest the semi-finals of the Mug. The winners will advance to the final of the Mug and the runners-up will contest the final of the Tea Cup. t) The above format allows all teams to play at least two games in the knockout phases of the competition on the Second day. u) The rules of the tournament, including their interpretation and any additional rules, are at the sole discretion of the tournament organizers, whose decisions shall be final.
VETERANS COMPETITION (OVER 35) The mens competition tournament rules will apply with the addition of the following rules: 1. Players must be a minimum of 35 years old at the time of the tournament 2. The use of non-contested scrums and the 20 metres running rule to be agreed between the captains in consultation with the referee in advance of the game. 3. The veterans competition will be on a round bobbin basis with each team playing one another. The Cup, Plate, Bowl and Shield will be awarded to the teams finishing in first, second, third and fourth places respectively.
ANCIENTS (OVER 50) GAME In addition to the mens tournament rules and the veterans rules noted above, the following shall also apply: 1. Players must be a minimum of 50 years old at the time of the tournament 2. No contested scrums; scrum half must pass 3. Line outs - no lifting or supporting. Free kick to the non-offending team. 4. Offside - normal IRB rules (i.e. nobody cares!) 5. Kicking - no kicking whatsoever in open play; conversions and kickoffs are allowed but only by drop kick. Free kick to the non-offending team. 6. Tackles - No tackles designed to take opponent to the ground are allowed. Players must be “claimed and held” above the waist. Players “claimed and held” are deemed to be tackled and must pass the ball or release it without delay. Free kick to the non-offending team. 7. TIME: DURATION OF A MATCH • •
Pool games are 10 minutes with no half time. Final games are 7 minutes each half with 1-minute half time.
HALF TIME (Finals) After half time the teams change ends. There is an interval of not more than one minute.
EXTRA TIME When there is a drawn match and the competition structure requires extra time, after a break of one minute the extra time is played in periods of five minutes. After each period, the teams change ends without an interval. This only applies to the finals games not pool games and Golden Point Rule applies.

SCRUM A scrum is formed in the field of play when five players from each team, bound together in two rows for each team, close up with their opponents so that the heads of the front rows are interlocked. This creates a tunnel into which a scrum half throws in the ball so that front row players can compete for possession by hooking the ball with either of their feet. • The offside line for players who are not in the scrum and who are not the teams scrum half, is 5 metres behind the hindmost foot of the scrum. • Ball must be released from scrum: A player must not intentionally keep the ball in the scrum once the player’s team has heeled the ball and controls it at the base of the scrum. INSIDE 22 When a defending player receives the ball outside the 22 metre line and passes, puts or takes the ball back inside the 22, the following can occur. • If the ball is then kicked directly into touch, the lineout is in line with where the ball was kicked. • If a tackle, ruck or maul is subsequently formed and the ball is then kicked directly into touch, the lineout is where the ball crossed the touchline.

POSTS & FLAGS Corner posts will be positioned at the outside junction of the goal line and the touch line. • If a player is in possession of the ball and touches a corner post OR corner flag he will not be in touch unless he touches the touchline or the ground beyond the touchline. • If the ball is not being carried by a player and it touches the corner post the ball will not be deemed to be touch in goal and where the ball goes next, perhaps over the touchline or touch-ingoal will determine the next play.

On a quick throw in, the ball can be thrown straight or backwards towards the defenders goal line. Players may assist a team-mate in jumping for the ball by lifting and supporting that player providing that the lifting and/or supporting players do not support the jumping team-mate below the shorts from behind or below the thighs from the front. Lifting is permitting only in Under 16 and 18 age group. Lifting by the shorts is prohibited Sanction : Penalty kick
TACKLE & RUCK Immediately the tackle occurs there are offside lines. A tackle occurs when the ball carrier is brought to the ground and held by an opponent. This includes being on one knee, sitting on the ground or being on another player on the ground. Once tackled the ball carrier must immediately place, push or pass the ball. The tackler must release the tackled player and roll away. No defending player may prevent the ball carrier from playing the ball. After a tackle players must be on their feet when they play the ball. Non-tacklers must join the “tackle area” from their own side of the tackle • If the ball in a ruck becomes unplayable the scrum feed will be awarded to the team-moving forward immediately prior to the stoppage. Offside line is last feet. • If the ball in a maul becomes unplayable the scrum feed will be awarded to the team NOT in possession at the commencement of the maul. Offside line is last feet.

Bangkok Japanese The Bangkok Japanese RFC have been an institution in Bangkok since 1964. A rich 50 year history. We have more than 40 members who are not only Japanese. We also have members from Argentina, Cameroon and England. We enjoy playing rugby every weekend throughout the year. Last year, we won all three tournaments held among Japanese teams in Asia, namely the Asian Japanese Rugby Cup, Sawadee Cup and Andaman Cup. Our motto is “We enjoy our life through rugby”. Enjoy Bangkok life with us!
Gaulois XV RFC XV Gaulois (to be pronounced “ke~z golwa” with no spitting at the end) are back for the fifth year in a row to support Eddie and his team. Of course you are here to enjoy this great week-end of rugby, friendships and parties. Strong from our previous experiences and just out of our first participation in the Singapore League, we will come as Mousquetaires du Roy. They represented true defenders of the French flair and gentleman-ship that our game represents. Our two teams will represent Gascons and Bourguignons who were traditionally core members of these troops: “The Musketeers were a junior unit of the military branch of the Royal Household or Maison du Roy created in 1622. The Musketeers were open to the lower classes of French nobility or younger sons from noble families whose oldest sons served in the more prestigious Garde du Corps and Cheavau-legers (Light Horse). The Musketeers soon gained a reputation for boisterousness and fighting spirit because the only way for social and career advancement was excelling at their task. Their high esprit de corps gained royal favor for the Musketeers and they were frequently seen at court and in Paris. A few famous Musketeers were d’Artagnan, Aramis, Portos and Atos. They are famous for their motto until today: “Un pour tous et tous pour un !”
OB Bangers Colts The Old Bangkok Bangers Open Team whom we affectionally call our Colts side, is the nectar of our club, are here to PLAY and to support our Old Boys and the true coffin dodging Banger Ancients. We look forward to meeting many of you on the field but all of you in the now infamous “Bangers Bar” at the field during our wonderful weekend of festival rugby. As for results we hope that Eddie Evans has looked after us with the draw and that we get to play all of the soft teams early! As a team that spends more time in the bar after training than on the pitch we often pull off a few surprises and we plan to keep up this tradition. Look out, look out the Bangers are about! NZ Legends Burwood Blues The Burwood Blues are a bunch of mates congregated from the Burwood suburb of Sydney, Australia. They are all ex rugby players from clubs including West Harbour, Randwick, Warringah and Easts who due to bad life choices – including marriage, kids and not enough alcohol have resigned themselves to the social rugby tours that brings them to Bangkok. A few of the team still ply their trade, some in the echelons of Premier club rugby in Sydney and most in the echelons of the Western stand at Concord oval.
Bangkok Tens regulars, the New Zealand Legends are back this year for another tilt at the title. This year’s team consists of a mix of both New Zealand and Australian based Kiwi players who all share in the Legends ethos of playing serious rugby for fun. Leading the charge for us this year are Tens vets Richard ‘Rat’ Naylor and Bevin ‘Grainger’ Passmore, a couple of wily campaigners who know their way around a rugby pitch almost as well as they do the way around the delightful nocturnal dens of Sukhumvit ably managed, day and night, by prominent Kiwi Silver tycoon, Stuntman. Our side will be playing tribute to him by wearing his name on the sleeves of the playing shirts. Once a Legend, Always a Legend. The New Zealand Legends thank the organisers of the 2014 Bangkok Tens, Mulligans Irish Pub, PPi, Citadines and Heineken for their support..
Phuket Vagabonds
After an influx of new players in 2013 the Vagabonds are now ready to grace the hallowed fields of Bangkok yet again. Comprising players from South Africa, UK, New Zealand, Zimbabwe, a token Yank and, what team wouldn’t be complete without one, a “Frenchman” to take the piss out of. We’ll be bringing our own style of tropical rugby to entertain the Bangkok faithful. We have no illusions that the competition off the field will be more fierce than on it & we will no doubt be competing for top honours into the early hours of the morning. Bedok Kings After a lengthy absence, the legends of Singapore - Bedok Kings - return to Bangkok. With Tens skills polished in Phuket and Phnom Penh last year, they are uncontested champions of the tactical substitution. As always, their game plan will revolve around strong-arming enough naive tour virgins into taking care of playing whilst old hands support with alcohol-addled jeers at referee, opposition
Mens Team Profiles and frequently their own teammates. For Bangkok, past imbibing performances suggests silverware is an unattainable goal. Therefore, the team ambition is to win the ‘most despicable’ award. Unfortunately, senior members of the club are insisting on tarnishing their reputation with ridiculously generous charitable donations. The only remediation being counter balancing this with the most depraved and deplorable behavior known to rugby-mankind. Challenge accepted. Royal Thai Police The Royal Thai Police Rugby Club are one of Thailand’s premier clubs and a traditional powerhouse in the Thai Rugby Union competition. They also compete with some success in Sevens and Tens tournaments in the Kingdom around the region. One can expect this talented young Thai team, to show their silky style this weekend. The team can rely on strong local support to challenge for the Cup. The Thai Police club has a tradition and a commitment to fostering rugby talent from within their ranks. Over the years many players have gone on to represent their country.
Bejing Devils The Beijing Devils Rugby Team have been going for over 20 years now. With a history of good rugby and a great social scene in China’s capital, the Devils have a competitive and travelling female squad, a touch team affiliated to the club and a men’s team that has been undefeated for the past four years in the Beijing league, Yellow Sea Cup and also the Champions of Asia cup. We have an ethos of ‘work hard, play hard’ and the boys that join, make friends for life aided by our HQ – The Den - which is a 24 hour drinking establishment with a ‘home away from home’ atmosphere. As there is not a lot of rugby in Beijing, we enjoy heading to away fixtures and the evenings the follow are memorable for many reasons. We are particularly looking forward to sharing some of the Thai hospitality provided by the Bangers and their sponsors in the warmth of South East Asia and will love the taste of a cold beer both on and off the field.
Nak Suu Warriors This Nak Suu team for 2014 is a mixture of passionate players both local and overseas, we are a team that share a common love for rugby, but most of all helping disadvantaged children. We represent the heart of the cause and the passion of the sport The makeup of the invitational team is interesting, with four New Zealanders, a former Thai National Captain and handful of useful Bangkok expat and Thai players. The team are committed to playing exciting rugby, putting the Nak Suu Warriors on the map and bringing awareness to the Nak Suu rugby program over the weekend. The team will be coached and managed by Pete Burgess, the former coach of the Old Bangkok Bangers Rugby Club. We only want to bring awareness and an opportunities for these kids to experence an awesome tournament and for ALL player from near and afar - have a great weekend Make your way to the Nak Suu tent when you can and meet the Nak Suu kids. Southbridge RC The Southbridge team is on their fourth trip to the Bangkok International Tens in the last five years. Unfortunately we couldn’t make it for the 2013 tournament as we had an overseas side touring and playing us in New Zealand at the same time. We play in the Canterbury country competition in New Zealand and all our players at the Tens this year play club rugby for the Southbridge Club. Eight of these players will be experiencing the Bangkok Tens for the first time. In total we have a tour group of 27 this year made up of players, management and supporters. We really enjoy coming to the Tens and playing against teams we would never get to play otherwise and making new friends through rugby, we also understand the importance of the tournament for Nak Suu and like to be able to play our part in helping this program continue. We have a special gift this year to give to Nak Suu from the Southbridge Club and Dan Carter and we hope this will raise a good amount of money for the program.
Bombay Gymkhana Though rugby came to India way back in 1890, it still remains a very niche sport in the country, kept alive by die hard aficionados like the ‘motley crew’ that comprise the Bombay Gymkhana rugby team. Proud that the Club hosted the first rugby match ever played in India on its grounds and that, along with the Calcutta Cricket & Football Club, it is the oldest rugby playing club outside the UK. This group of enthusiastic professionals and businessmen fiercely strive to uphold the glorious rugby tradition of Bombay Gymkhana and keep the spirit of the sport alive. The Club hosts the All India & South Asia Rugby Tournaments and has also been accorded the honour of holding the IRB Qualifiers in the Asia Region for the past three years. Teams from Sri Lanka and Pakistan also regularly participate in All India Tournaments, adding a spark to the competitions and giving a fillip to the sport in
the sub-continent.
The ‘motley crew’ is fired up to keep the Bombay Gymkhana’s banner flying high at the Bangkok Tens and bring glory to the Club and a sport that they have so zealously embraced.
Brigalow Bushwackers The Brigalow Bushwackers are a group of rugby players from across the “Brigalow belt” in central Queensland. The side was formed in late 2012 to facilitate international trips for amateur players. Players have been drawn from a large geographical area around central Queensland. Players to watch include team captain Kurt Johnson from Rolleston and Neddy Poschelk from Clermont. The Bushwackers are focused on running rugby with an eye on the beer at the end.

Moscow Dragons We are the Moscow Dragons Rugby Football Club. Founded in Moscow, Russia in 1997 by a bunch of drunks obsessed with rugby from the UK and Ireland. We keep our rugby strong and our traditions even stronger. Our Club motto says it all - “Rugby, Friends, Booze!” - that’s what we do. In the past 17 years we have played some rugby, won some tournaments, plates, bowls and cups but more so we have made some serious (and not so serious)

We have drunk all that may be drunk and sometimes even drunk stuff that really shouldn’t have been drunk and have done it in the most obscene ways! Prepare your eyes, noses and throats for the World famous Dragons tequila. Amongst us one may find lawyers, thieves, government officials (all three represent pretty much the same thing), professional alcoholics, auditors, students, teachers, nut cases, surgeons etc. Bangkok should not to take us too seriously.
Jam Boys
Southerners Most scholars agree that rugby originated in 1823 after a bloke named William Webb Ellis went mental after seeing yet another of his soccer opponents take a dive. Wrong. The origins of our game stretch right back to the days of the ancient Aegean, where the gods used thunderbolts as goal posts and small agrarian mammals as rugby footballs. Ancient Turkish cave etchings show sheep shooting miles through the lofty airs above the now Dardanelles, obviously a precursor to last year’s ELV aerial debacle. In true homage to the origins of our fine game, the Corinthian men from the Southerners Sports Club Bangkok will be drawing inspiration from their deus forefathers in their quest to actually do something worth writing about in next year’s program, rather than wanging on about ancient Greek gods. Best of luck to all competitors this weekend, and many thanks to the organizers of what is always a cracking tournament weekend.
In certain and sacred parts of the world an incredible phenomenon known as ‘Jamboys’ exists. It takes place in the form of some legendary individuals will follow your 4 ball around certain golf courses and who will make your round comfortable and fly free by covering their heads in jam and attracting the flies TO them and AWAY from you. In recognition of these Jamboys a rugby club of similar phenomenon of players from all over the world.. Having competed in every Bangkok Tens tournament the Jamboys have always been very competitive on and off the field, We have won the tournament twice and been the recipients of the spirit award on many occasions. The Jamboys are privileged to be guests of the Thai people Friendships made with locals and visiting teams are way more important than any trophy. You can be sure to find a mix of experience in the Jamboys squad and a captain that refuses to retire or drop himself ever. Spend enough time with these individuals from about every corner of the globe, and a group of mates who will do just about anything to reunite on an annual basis in the special city of Bangkok.

INSEAD Singapore The INSEAD rugby teams have been loyal participants in the Bangkok 10’s tournament for many years and are very happy to return in 2014. INSEAD, a Singapore and France based business school, brings both a contact and touch team to Thailand with warriors from all over the world determined return home with countless victories and fantastic memories! Gakushi Juniors Gakushi Juniors are composed of younger members of Gakushi Rugger Club. Our club was established in 1928 and have more than an 80 years rugby tradition. Members of are old boys from Tokyo, Kyoto Universities and five other universities which were known as the “Seven Imperial Universities” in early Japan. This is the fourth time Gakushi has entered the Bangkok International Tens. We consider this an honour to come to this tournament and have had special jerseys made this year. We are looking forward to enjoying our rugby and displaying our Samurai Spirit - hard playing and hard drinking
Yangon Dragons Yangon Dragons RFC was formed in early 2013 with the intention of being, the first operational rugby club in the country, a platform for rugby development, and a step towards forming the future Rugby Federation or Union in the Republic of the Union of Myanmar. With close to 90 registered players involved in touch and contact rugby, the club aims to develop local players, through grass roots rugby development in schools, colleges and the armed forces. As a result, encourage the growth of the game within the country to participate in regional competitions. In recent months, the club embarked on a tour and participated in a tournament in the Philippines. The Cebu Tens was the club’s first international fixture and first official game of rugby. The Bangkok International Tens will be the second club tour. Over the next 12-18 months, the club’s goal is to develop a competitive environment that facilities the growth of 15, 10, and 7 aside men’s teams, including mixed and ladies touch teams. Participation in regional competitions will enable the club to forge ahead.

Guangzhou Rams The club was born in 1997 in Guangzhou started by a couple of lost expats wandering around South China. Initially we played with the Chinese PLA army team who are also based out of Guangzhou. Over the years we forged a good relationship with them and had a lot of cross training to help build their program. The club started only with a handful of members but has grown steadily over the years. We have a touch rugby and junior rugby program boasting over 200 members expat and local Chinese. We also have an affiliation now with South China Agricultural University and assist their rugby program train young Chinese students in the game of rugby union. The GZ Rams RFC has been a part of the HK Rugby league and played alongside Macau RFC and the HK Nomads RFC in previous years. We are now pat of the South China Cup League and were the inaugural champions of the 2012/13 year.
Mens Team Profiles rugby men who would love the chance to play with this very special club. To accommodate their wishes another team was started called The Thai Legends. Their goal is to emulate the success of the founding club Thai Barbarians.
Thai Barbarians The Thai Barbarians Rugby Club were established in 2003. The core principles of this club are to develop the sport of rugby union in Thailand and to play rugby during off season. It was started by the group of players who have the same goals and a love of the game developed after playing various clubs in Thailand. The club’s first ever competition was the Bangkok Tens in 2003 Since then the Thai Barbarians have focused more on rugby sevens and tens rather than the 15-a-side game. The Thai Barbarians has officially been registered as a Limited Company. As a company we can legally raise fund for club activities like other famous clubs do around the globe. e.g Auckland Club New Zealand, London Wasps of England etc. The Thai Barbarians Rugby Club is well known around South East Asia. Many countries that invite us to participate in their tournaments.
Sumitomo RFC We entered the Bangkok International Tens to display the Japanese samurai spirit and our brand of rugby. More than fifty players belong to our club and we have a game or practice every weekend. We look forward to the competition and the weekend in Bangkok and meeting international players

Thai Legends There is an old UK saying “Rugby is a ruffian’s game played by gentlemen”, Accordingly, a group of talented young Thai rugby players – gentlemen - were brought together to form the Thai Barbarians. This was in 2003. At that time, they had no ground or clubhouse, only the desire to play attacking barbarian style rugby. For six years, the Thai Legends Rugby Club has flourished and proved to be an outstanding success achieving another goal to play both in Thailand and around Southeast Asia. Tournament Rules
Additional Mens Teams Tanglin Singapore
There will be 8 teams in two pools of four. In these games four points will be awarded for a win, two points for a draw, one for a loss. On completion of these games, the two top placed teams in each pool will advance to the Cup semi-final. The remaining teams placed in third and fourth in each pool shall advance to the Bowl semi-final. In the event of one or more teams being tied with points awarded, the order of the teams will be based on points awarded first, then on tries scored and then points difference between for/against scored. If there are two or more teams equal after this, then it will be decided by a draw from a hat. The winning teams from the Cup semi-finals shall advance to the Cup final whilst the losing teams shall contest the Plate final. The winning reams from the Bowl semi-finals shall advance to the Bowl final whilst the losing teams shall contest the Shield final. For the pool games and semi-finals, the team that is stated first in the tournament programme shall kick off first from right to left. After half time the other team will kick off. Prior to the finals there will be a coin toss to determine which side will kick off first. The rules of the tournament, including their interpretation and any additional rules, are at the sole discretion of the tournament organizers, whose decisions shall be final. Rule 4 – Mode of Play, Duration and Scoring i) Rule 4.3 – the duration of all round robin games shall
be ten minute halves with a two minute half time break. The duration of the Cup Final shall be fifteen minute halves with a five minute half time break. ii) There will be no extra time during the round robin games. In the Cup Final, if the scores are level at the end of the game then a drop off will take place. A one-minute break occurs before the drop-off commences. Both teams reduce their on-field strength by one (1) player. iii) Each team reduces the number of on-field players by one player every two minutes, until they are down to three (3). iv) If a team scores from the tap off in sudden death, without the opposing team having had possession, the opposition have one set of six touches to score. If they don’t score within those six touches, the game is won by the first team that scored. v) From this point, the game will continue until the next touchdown is scored and the winner is found.
Rule 5 – Team Composition and Substitution i) Rule 5.1 – the composition of each team shall be 6 players with a maximum squad of 18 players though free flow substitutions are permitted.
Rule 17– Discipline and Misconduct i) Rules 17.3 and 17.4 – when a player has temporarily been suspended the period will be for two minutes.

Womens Team Profiles
ND Team Philippines Formed with the wives and girlfriends in December 2004 during the Nomad Rugby Christmas Party. Signing up blindly for a sport no one has ever played, taking up a couple of Nomads boys to coach a bunch of girls and playing in their first tournament in the summer of 2005. We are looking forward to a fantastic weekend of touch at the Bangkok Tens. Good vibes and good times.
INSEAD Ladyboys The INSEAD Ladyboys were founded in 1963. They have and remain undefeated to this day. Blessed by the Rugby Gods, they’ve been re-baptized and granted new names (you’re encouraged to ask about their meanings). With half the team located in Singapore, and half outside Paris, they enjoy touring pubs all over the world, and occasionally a few rugby pitches. Being undefeated, they don’t really need to be coached.
Nak Suu Tigers Nak Suu Tigers. This team is made up of a mixture of players from overseas and also girls who are a part of the Nak Suu Academy which reaches out to our most vulnerable and disadvantaged communities in Bangkok city. This year will give them a up front look at the pace and skill of the game. This competition will give them opportunities to push there skills to another level and the chance to experience play with both local and international players in the Bangkok International Tens 2014
Southerners SC The Southerners Touch started back in 1998 with a group of girls being fed up of playing tennis while the boys played rugby. The ladies set up Touch ans is now a full section of the Southerners Sports Club The girls are looking forward to playing without the blokes. We will catch up with them in the beer garden! Southerners are the only full time touch team in Bangkok. Yearly, we organize a mixed touch tournament and we are always keen to be invited to tour overseas.

Yangon Dragons The Yangon Dragons is a new club that was established in Myanmar last year. As the sport grew and attracted flocks of men, a small ladies touch team slowly developed primarily made up of girlfriends of rugby players. The ladies touch team is still developing and the Bangkok social tournament will be their first international tour. We look forward to meeting the teams and learning from the best.
Emirates Firebirds The Emirates Firebirds team was formed in 2012. Though relatively new, the club has a huge player base but many of the ladies are still in the development stage. We have participated in a few social touch tournaments in Dubai. Bangkok will be our first international tour and we’re looking forward to test our skills against some of Asias best.

Southerners OBs Formed in 2009 for those Southerners Sports Club stalwarts who didn’t want to have to defect to traditional rivals the Old Bangkok Bangers to get a game of ‘mature’ rugby, the Southerners Old Boys (Silly Old Bastards) are an early stage geriatric combination of Southern hemisphere grit, Brazilian rugby flair and Anglo-Saxon medieval madness. The team has conducted an extensive number of team meetings, captain-player consultations and surveys to set its key goals in preparation for this year’s Bangkok Tens tournament : Not die, Go one better than the Old Bangkok Bangers, Be the last team drinking on the Sunday night, All challengers welcome and bring the port and cigars. Guskushi Old Boys Gakushi Old Boys are members of the Gakushi Rugger Club in Japan. The club was established in 1928 and has more than an 80 years rugby history. Members are old boys from Tokyo and Kyoto Universities and five other universities known once as the “seven imperial universities” in ancient Japan. This is the fourth time Gakushi has played in the Bangkok International Tens tournament. We consider it an honour to be here. We are looking forward to enjoying our rugby and displaying our Samurai Spirit of hard tackling and drinking.
HARFA Sri Lanka The Hisham Abdeen Rugby Football Academy (HARFA) was launched on 17th December 2008. The academy is located at Havelock Sports Club, one of the oldest and most popular rugby clubs in Sri Lanka. It is indeed an honour and privilege for HARFA to field an over 35 veteran’s team including former national players, the rest consisting of leading ‘A’ division club players. The enthusiasm and keenness shown by the former players have been awesome and encouraging. The anticipation and excitement created by the some of these legendary ex-Sri Lankan players taking the field again would indeed be a highlight for many a rugby connoisseur. HARFA is happy to mention that this tournament has become an annual feature in the HARFA calendar.

Shanghai Rebels Formed in 2013, the Shanghai Rebels is a very social rugby team who occasionally get ringers in to do their dirty work. We recently won the plate competition at the Shanghai Sevens and are looking to follow up with a good showing in Bangkok. We were happy to have Justin Marshall playing in our first ever game and hobble off with a beer related injury. We are looking for competitive teams to play in the Shanghai 7s 2014 in September. Singapore Olskool The Singapore Olskools is an above 35 veterans’ social rugby outfit from Singapore, actively participating in veterans’ tournaments and friendlies around this region. We are made up of ex-players of the Singapore national team and other like-minded veterans rugby enthusiasts residing in Singapore. Being a social rugby team, our goals are to foster bonds and camaraderie within teammates and opponents likewise, and most importantly, to give back to society through rugby.
Youth Team Profiles of the club and whilst the club continues to grow and evolve, the club will be and is always there for the players. Rugby itself is not an elitist sport, nor is it a sport just for talented individuals. It is there for everyone to enjoy and appreciate the ethos and ethic of the game. We teach our members that Winning is important, however equally important is the spirit in which you play the game as well as the how you react in defeat. It is through discipline, control, mutual respect and camaraderie that the spirit of the game is played and flourishes. Old fashioned values have stood the test of time in rugby and with the Bangkok Lions RFC, we ensure that these values are not lost on the players of the future.
Nak Suu Tigers Participating in the Under 11, 12 and 16 Category. Formed in 2009, the academy runs once a week on Saturday, three times a month. The kids are transported to PC Bangkaew Field where the staff and Nak Suu volunteers welcome them. Throughout the morning, the children rotate to stations, which include rugby coaching, a basic english lesson, a short bible teaching, and a craft or creative activity. The ultimate goal is to have a lasting impact in the lives of young people through rugby training and life skill development - building trust, hope, self esteem, and courage.
Dubai Warriors
Bangkok Lions Established in 2004, the club provides an avenue for all children, regardless of size, ability or nationality to learn and play rugby. Over the years, the club has seen many local and expatriate families come and go, with the backbone of the club being its traditional values of rugby. Into our 10th Anniversary, the club continues to offer rugby development for children in Bangkok and is looking forward to another 10 years and beyond. Catering for young children to young adults, the club continues to provide the ethos of rugby to these statesmen of the future. With a volunteer base of coaches and staff and the support of Bangkok Patana School with its sporting facilities, the club looks to develop many of the players into young adults who understand the game, the history, the values, achievement, leadership, sportsmanship, friendship and respect. any people believe and consider that rugby was born in 1823 with William Webb Ellis. The game was played at private schools and colleges such as Eton, Harrow and Oxford. It was later that the schoolboys formed clubs to enable them to continue playing their favorite school game, and others less fortunate were encouraged to join them. In some cases, players who had not had the experience of playing the game at school, but who had the energy and the will to follow the example of those who had obtained experience from the formed clubs to play the game. Let’s fast forward to 1995, the year the Rugby World Cup was hosted and won by South Africa following the release of Nelson Mandela from prison in 1990. Mandela became an iconic figure from 1994-1999 where he brought a nation together from all different walks of life and different social classes united in the game of rugby. Who can forget Ellis Stadium packed with over 65,000 (many white South Africans) cheering and chanting the name Mandela. Now, let’s Fast Forward to 2014 and the Bangkok Lions RFC have continued this theme of players joining forces with those less fortunate and have combined the Under 14 age group. Nak Suu will run on to the field during this tournament with players from the Bangkok Lions to once again present a united front in the arena of sport, namely rugby. The Nak Suu Tigers and Bangkok Lions Rugby Football Club will be known in the Under 14 category as The “LIGERS” It is no coincidence that rugby is known as the “Gentleman’s Game”. The opportunity for all players, from different backgrounds, different upbringing, different social circumstances, different education and financial circumstances is a unique and heart-warming experience for all concerned. This “feel good” story may not be unique around the world however it is unique in this day and age. By donning this specially designed Liger jersey, all players are united in bridging the gap between race and equality. This will be seen as a defining moment in rugby for Thailand. The experience and opportunity for these players is something that they will remember and cherish for many years to come. To all those Ancients out here, and those others who might hope to qualify to be one along with us this weekend, (it’s an age thing, not an excess of talent just enthusiasm – we play our exhibition match Sunday afternoon!) we can quarantee a performance in a manner that will allow you to delight and amuse our visitors. Mates of all shapes sizes and genders, GFs, kids, and even grandkids in some cases. If you are over fifty and game for a laugh at your own expense, look for Spud or Soi Dog of the Bangers Ancients.
