Welcome to the 2014 Menu Guide! I’ve visited San Luis Obispo since I was a newborn. Approximately twice a year, my family would pack up our Jeep Cherokee and head four hours south to my parents’ old college stomping grounds for our family vacation. Although our weekend trips would be filled with traditional local activities like afternoons combing the beach at Montaña De Oro or strolling downtown, the memories I most remember were when we would sit down to eat together. When it came to eating in San Luis Obispo, my family had a routine. Every morning— without fail— we would start the day off at Linnaea’s Cafe. For my parents, these visits served as a homage to their college traditions some 20 years earlier. For me, these trips to the cafe would be one of the few and treasured times we could eat breakfast together, sitting in the back courtyard with the shining sun and chirping birds to keep us company. One night of our trip was always dedicated to barbeque, with most of our visits paid to McClintocks. I never looked at the menu, because I always ordered my favorite meal of chicken strips and fries, and my brother and I would play a made-up game of trying to find our initials in the various brandings on the walls. As times changed and years passed, our traditions held steady. Fast forward to today, and this great city has become my home. While many things have changed, the unique and diverse dining experience found in San Luis Obispo has not. Every restaurant offers something different and special to its diners, and also offers the opportunity to form memories and traditions. No longer is a restaurant simply a restaurant — it is an experience. During my time at Cal Poly, just like years before, some of my fondest memories include gathering around a table, surrounded by my coworkers, my friends, friendly strangers or family. The variety of dining places offers a destination to fit any occasion, whether it be for a dinner out with friends, a quick bite to eat or a meal with a special someone. This menu guide is meant to help you pick the right dining experience, no matter the occasion, so you can make your own dining traditions and memories. Bon Appétit!
