INTRODUCTION 01 What is the report about? This documentation package has been prepared as part of the Malcolm Street Masterplan and provides further details for the construction of the deisgn of the Malcolm Street precinct between the Chapel Street gateway and the Chapel Mews gateway. The focus area (right) has been highlighted in the Malcolm Street masterplan as an area for water sensitive urban design (WSUD). This will be achieved by retrofitting the existing drains in the area, extending sidewalks and removing on street parking. 02 Design principles The design documented in this package focuses on the concept of regeneration across scales, and has the following principles at its core:

Improving the public realm by creating safer streets for people. Stormwater management through WSUD.

Increasing the number of street trees to improve urban cooling. Improving ease of movement by creating walkable connections with wider footpaths. 1:800

02 Masterplan summary Zone 1 - Chapel Street gateway The Chapel Street gateway improves the pedestrian experience at the intersection of Chapel and Malcolm street by widening the footpath and creating pause points. Zone 2 - Malcolm Street The focus along Malcolm Street is traffic calming through street narrowing and tree planting to create a safer environment for people and vehicles. Zone 3 - Chapel Mews gateway The Chapel Mews gateway is a pause point at the intersection of Malcolm Street and the proposed pedestrian link along Chapel Mews. The improves the pedestrian experience a by creating better pedestrian links. Zone 4 - Shared street The intersection of Malcolm and River Street is a proposed shared road. The intersection is the threshold between residential zoning and the Chapel Street activity centre. The shared space will improve the pedestrian link between the two zones.

STREET GREENING

GATEWAYS

PEDESTRIAN PRIORITY

SIDEWALK WIDENING

Street greening will create cooler environment while beautifying Malcolm Street. Key greening elements include street tree planting, rain garden installation, and planting beds built into custom street furniture. Where possible stormwater runoff will be used for irrigation.

Gateways create pause points at the intersection of key pedestrian links. Gateway elements include footpath widening, pause points with custom street furniture and integrated planting beds and improved canopy coverage.

Pedestrian priority areas will reduce pedestrian and vehicle conflict zones and pedestrian links along Malcolm Street. This included widening the existing pedestrian crossing, installing a pedestrian crossing at the Chapel Mews intersection and turning the intersection of Malcolm and River Street into an intersection.

Narrowing the road along Malcolm Street through sidewalk widening is a traffic calming method, which also improves the pedestrian experience. This was done by reducing the radius of street corners, removing on-street parking and narrowing lanes to 3.5m wide.

EXISTING SITE The site sits between the Chapel Street gateway, and the Malcolm and Chapel Mews intersection. The site is predominantly road reserve. The narrow sidewalks on the north and south of the road are mainly a pedestrian thoroughfare with no place for people to stop. There is limited canopy coverage along Malcolm Street and it has been highlighted as a street for greening in the Chapel Street Revision plan. 1:800
