HISTORICAL

PHYSICAL

SOCIAL

ITASCA WAS FIRST SETTLED BY DR. ELIJA SMITH IN 1841. HE WAS AN ENTREPRENUER AND ACHIEVER IN HIS QUEST TO RELOCATE HIS PRACTICE FROM BOSTON IN SEARCH OF A NEW PLACE FOR HEALTH, WELLNESS, FARMING AND RAISING A FAMILY. THE NAME, ITASCA, WAS ESTABLISHED AFTER HIS VISIT TO LAKE ITASCA IN MINNESOTA. IT MEANS TRUTH’ AND ‘HEAD’, A REFERENCE TO THE SOURCE OF THE MISSISSIPPI. THE HISTORIC VICTORIAN DOWNTOWN NEIGHBORHOOD AND BEAUTIFUL 9 PARKS AND NATURE PRESERVE DISTINGUISH ITASCA AS AN URBAN RETREAT FROM THE NEIGHBORING LARGER CITY OF CHICAGO. ITASCA, AS IT CELEBRATES ITS 125TH ANNIVERSARY IN 2015.CONTINUES TO CONTROL ITS DEVELOPMENT ACCORDING TO THE INDIVIDUALITY OF ITS PAST.

THE WESTIN CHICAGO NORTHWEST IS LOCATED JUST 12 MILES FROM O'HARE INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT AND 27 MILES FROM DOWNTOWN CHICAGO IN THE CITY OF ITASCA. THE BUILDING IS A 12-STORY HIGH-RISE LOCATED IN THE PARK-LIKE SETTING OF HAMILTON LAKES OFF OF I-355. THIS IS A MASTER-PLANNED DEVELOPMENT OF APPROXIMATELY THREE AND ONE-HALF MILLION SQUARE FEET OF OFFICE SPACE WITH BEAUTIFUL OUTDOOR PUBLIC SPACES THAT ARE WELL ESTABLISHED.

ITASCA HAS LONG BEEN PROUD OF ITS RESIDENTS’ SENSE OF CLOSENESS, ENCOURAGED BY THE PHYSICAL LAYOUT OF THE VILLAGE ITSELF. THE VILLAGE HAS AN OLD-TIME NEIGHBORHOOD FEEL WITH THE NEW RIVERWALK AND WALKING ROUTES THROUGH THE SPRING BROOK NATURE CENTER. THE WALKABLE COMMUNITY CREATES A SENSE OF A GATHERING PLACE, TYING IN NATURE AND BLENDING EDUCATION, HEALTH AND COMMUNITY PRIDE.

westin chicago northwest

THERE IS MORE THAN 43 ACRES DEDICATED PARK AREA IN ITASCA. A 393 ACRE NATURE PRESERVE CREATES A GREENBELT ALONG THE EXPRESSWAY. THE PRESERVE INCLUDES A NATURE CENTER, SONGBIRD SANCTUARY, BUTTERFLY GARDEN AND FITNESS WELL BEING CENTER. THERE IS MORE THAN TWO MILES OF TRAILS THAT RUN THROUGH INDIGENOUS PRAIRIE, SUN- SPECKLED WOODLANDS AND A MAGNIFICENT CATTAIL MARSH OF THE NATURE CENTER. THIS URBAN RETREAT PROVIDES AN ESCAPE FOR ALL TO CONNECT WITH.

| CONTEXTUAL INSIGHTS

4

INDIGINEOUS NATURE REFLECTED IN A CONTEMPORARY TRANSLATION DESIGN THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS OF THE SURROUNDING ENVIRONMENT A modern interior landscape through a unique perspective and inspired by the adjacent parks and lakes. Health and Wellness resonates throughout the environment through physical and emotional attributes. The peripheral natural elements of the hotel surroundings inspire the details, architectural forms, and a variety of textures and tones creating a rich layered guest experience.

westin chicago northwest

| DESIGN NARRATIVE

5

AN URBAN OASIS SIMPLIFIED 1. A journey through a modern oasis where the guests connect back to nature through meandering paths and hidden sanctuaries. 2. An escape to an experience where the past and present are rooted in overall wellness. 3. A discovery of precious aspects of nature through a new perspective of thoughtfully designed elements and solutions.
