GENERAL REMARKS. The Teachers' Seminary of Dr. Martin Luther College at New mm, Minn., was organized in 1893 under a resolution of the Evangelical Lutheran Joint Synod of Wisconsin, Minnesota, Michigan, and other States. It is supported by voluntary contributions from the congregations belonging to that body. The organization of the Seminary was prompt~d by the necessity of supplying Lutheran parochial schools ID the Northwest with competent teachers, and this consideration primarily governs the selection of branches to be taught, and the determination of the ends to be attained. At the same time, the courses of our lower classes are so arranged that they afford preparatory training fully equal to that offered in classical colleges. Three preparatorr col: legiate classes and the Freshman class have been established, from the latter, a student will be able to pass to the Sophomore class of some complete college. . Formerly, the institution also embraced a bu~mess department which offered special training in book-keep~ng, typewriting, shorthand and commercial law to all pupils ~h:t aim was to prepare for work in the commercial line. This epartment, however, was abolished in the summer of 1901 by

DR. MARTIN LUTHER COLLEGE.

31

a resolution of the Joint Synod who decided to replace it by a sixth class added to the normal course. But this act did not change the character of our preparatory classes, except by widening their adaptability to pupils of various degrees of preparation. These classes still constitute an excellent high足 school where young people find an opportunity of perfecting their general education. We claim a positive superiority for our school on the ground that the entire government of the pupils and all instruction is of a distinctly Christian char足 acter. The several courses are open both to young men and young women. A limited number of young men can find board and lodging in the college building at the rate of $2.50 a week. Tuition will be charged at the rate of $4 a month for any course, excepting music. Pupils living in town pay $8.00 a year for fuel. All students of the college are required to conform to all rules and regulations which are, or may be, established by the college authorities. As our courses are laid out so as to continue throughout the school-year, special arrangements for individual pupils are possible only in so far as the regular program will per足 mit. If satisfactory and lasting results are desired, it will be advisable to arrange for attendance of at least an entire school-year. A term of three months is certainly insufficient for high-school work. The next fall term opens August 29, 1917, the win足 ter term January 3, 1918, the spring term April 13, 1918. The school year will close June 12, 1918. All inquiries concerning the institution may be directed to the president.
