Senior girls "getting it together"
These books are so heavy!
Father-daughter team irons out the kinks in the class schedules for students.
Academites aggragate
16
September 8, 1970 the Academic Center bustled with activity as MLA began a new school term. Students registered, received their schedules, and purchased books. Friends got together after a long summer and also met their new classmates. Regretfully summer had passed, but hopefully a happy year lay ahead for everyone. Boys living in Hillview? Because of extensive repairs being made in Summit Hall, the Academy boys were lodged in the college girls dorm for the first few weeks of school. Before college registration began, Academy classes were dismissed and the boys had the time consuming job of moving into their new old dorm. The girls did not get out of anything that afternoon, however They had to scrub and polish floors and straighten out Centennial Hall.

Rams succeed successfully The 1970 football season produced a new high. From the first day of football to the last our team wanted to play football, and how they did! Inspired by our new coach, Alan Just, each player on the team performed with 110% efficiency. Both conference championships were taken this year, with an all out 4-0 victory in the Red Rock. Both conferences chose all-conference players. The Red Rock chose Stan Aufderheide, Mike Haase, Bob Siirila, and Ken Zahn. The Tri-Valley chose Jon Winkel, Rob Siirila, and Stan Aufderheide, who was also chosen as player of the week. Luther Luther Luther Luther Luther Luther Luther Luther

Homecoming cli7naxes the season The Homecoming scene for 1970 can be summed up in one word-successful. From start to finish the student body combined forces and shifted into gear Festivities commenced with the pepfest, which was enhanced by an encouraging skit by the cheerleaders. Cheering was aided by the Pep Band. The following day began with the team spearing the Lancers from Minneapolis Lutheran. The banquet, highlighted by the Junior skit and the singing groups, rounded off the memorable weekend.

Rambassadors on the move
Rambassadors add to Choral Festival Rambassadors? Who ever heard of such a named group? They are sixteen singing seniors under the supervision of Prof. E. Hirsch. The name derives from the addition of "ambassadors" to the school mascot, the Ram. Representing originally M.L.A. at the WELS Choral Festival, they have become a facet of the recruitment program. As such they give, upon invitation, musical entertainment in neighboring congregations to P T.A.'s, youth groups, and elementary schools.
Rambassadors take part in the service at St. John's in Saginaw, Michigan.

This year's staff was made up of three seniors, including editor Anne Oldfield, two juniors, and three sophomores. Meeting on the third floor of Old Main, they have worked hard to bring the highlights of the school year to you through pictures.

Students • get in the know The monthly newspaper of MLA is the RamPage. It is produced by the members of the Senior Journalism Class. Students submit stories and information and the best ones are selected for publication. Each student on campus, along with the faculty, receives a copy of the paper. Circulation doesn't end there. Copies are exchanged with other parochial schools in the area. In this manner, students in the area learn about our school and what goes on here. Upper right: Get your red hot news! The Student Council is an organization of students that meets to solve problems of student school life that arise from time to time. Its primary purpose is to plan, organize, and supervise. The officers of the Council are not just picked or appointed. Each would be member must gain signatures for nomination, deliver a campaign speech, and then stand the test of the ballot box to become an officer of the Council.

Individual representatives of the Student Council also have their duties. They, for instance, must serve on various committees and do some of the work through the course of the year. Work
does not end here, for each committee must present a report of its activities and make recommendations to the committee of the following school year.

The LMU gym-full to capacity
Sing Noel! The Christmas season is a busy one at MLA. Even before Thanksgiving, students are planning room decorations, purchasing and receiving gifts, and practicing for the concert which climaxes the season. Under the theme "Gloria in Excelsis Deo," all in the LMU gym raised their voices to the newborn Savior. The Chorus began with "Oh, Come, All Ye Faithful." Later the Choir sang "Holy Night" and "How Unto Bethlehem."
The Choir walks out to the traditional hymn "Silent Night."
30
Families get together after concert.
The Academy Chorus, made up of all students in the tenth, eleventh, and twelfth grades, practices once a week under the direction of Professor Hirsch. It performs at the Christmas, spring, and June Night concerts. The Choir is selected from the Chorus. Professor Hirsch's left-handed direction leads the Choir three times a week. This group sings in various concerts, goes upon invitation to neighboring congregations, and records for the Wisconsin Synod church services presented on KNUJ. Snow arrives in time for Carnival This year's Snow Carnival, aided by a timely blizzard, was held March 3 through 6. All classes spent the week working on their respective sculptures and skits. The tobogganing and skating party was held on Saturday night, and the skits, Song-Fest, and presentation of awards were on Sunday. The class of "71" came in first for the third year in a row, the sophomores were second, the juniors third, and the freshmen fourth.

The Traveling Choir
The Traveling Choir, made up of thirty-five members this year, is chosen by Prof. Hirsch from the regular Choir This group receives many invitations from various churches and this year chose to go to the Rhinelander, Wisconsin area. The Choir left the morning of May 15. That evening the entire group sang at Eagle River The following day the Choir split into three groups to sing at Eagle River, Rhinelander, and Woodruff-Minoqua. In the afternoon the entire group performed at Rhinelander and later at Spring Valley, returning to school in the early hours of the next day. They had a very successful trip, declaring God's praises in six different services. Feeding the vocal chords!

MLA Band expands activities For the student body of MLA, there were many "firsts" this year One such "first" was the co-efforts of the band and the Pep Club. Together they produced cheers accompanied by the band. Forty-five students participated in the MLA band under the direction of Prof. Hirsch. Band offers the student an opportunity to develop his musical talent in a way other than singing. Instrumental music gives the student this opportunity. To those students who have never been involved in band and would like to join, a beginning band program is available. This was the MLA band's second year of existence and also the first year it hosted the Band Festival that included Wisconsin Synod High Schools in the western Wisconsin, Minnesota, and South Dakota areas. There were sixty-two members from Luther High School, Onalaska, Wisconsin, twelve from Mobridge, South Dakota, forty-one from St. Croix Lutheran High School, West St. Paul, Minnesota, thirty-three attended from MLA. Participating in the Festival were the Satellite and All-Star Bands. The All-Star Band consisted of the best players from all four bands. Together the two bands combined to form the Massed Band. After much hard work and sore lips, a successful concert was given.

Rams leap to victory Although the Rams had eight losses, they offset them by winning sixteen games and getting first place in the Manitowoc Invitational Tournament. Here the Rams really showed that they knew how to handle the ball. At this tournament, Dave Kaiser was chosen as the "Most valuable player" Mark Brunner and Jim Huebner were given "All Tournament" awards. The Rams were led by Coach Kaiser and cocaptains Jim Huebner and Rob Siirila. The B-team didn't do as well as the A-team. They had eight wins and eleven losses. The B-team was coached by Professor Duin.

Beauty sleep?
Two of the major events in a senior's year are the class trip and the class play On April 2 and 3, Jim Huebner and Karen Kilchenmann directed "Don't Drink the Water" by Woody Alan, with the help of Prof. Hirsch. Scramble and confusion combined to make an hilarious farce. American tourists trapped in an U S. Embassy behind the Iron Curtain devised an idiotic plan to escape the clutches of the secret police. On May 24 a group of sleepy seniors left for a literally drippy class trip. Fair weather did not arrive and the proposed agenda hastily had to be revised. Sight-seeing, hard on the feet, and eating, hard on the stomach, plus a cinerama movie rounded out an unusual but enjoyable day for the senior class.

There our four top players, Mark Brunner, Paul Muesing, Dave Kaiser, and Dave Grundmeier, scored enough points to take second place. Since the team will lose only two seniors, we may look forward to another good season next year

This year was a year of change for intramural players. Starting off the year of extra curricular sports was softball with teams made up of girls from different classes rather than the traditional class team. The basketball season followed with Rachel Horn's senior team emerging as unbeaten champions. Volleyball had a very short, fast season this year with all the games played within two and one-half weeks. A mixed team captained by Kerryn Kragel won the tournaments. Because of the full spring calendar, girls badminton and tennis were excluded .

Seniors dominate intramurals Great interest was shown in two sports this year The senior team, Meat Incorporated, competed against six others and finished victorious in basketball. Another group of seniors, the Esels, successfully defended its title from last year to
remain volleyball champs. Six boys entered the archery competition, in which Bob Brunz scored highest. Since only two teams were formed to play softball, there was no regular tournament.

Pianists tread the cultural board Four public piano recitals made the music scene at MLA this spring. The first, featuring Karen Faugstad and Pauline Raasch, was held on April 20. Another, featuring Cassandra Kramer and Lyless Lindloff, was held on May 7 Two different larger groups of the more advanced piano students presented recitals on April 29 and May 14. Many long hours of practice and nervous performers were rewarded by appreciative audiences.

Seniors sent forth as servants of Christ Sixth-three seniors presented themselves on the morning of June 3 before the faculty, Board of Control, parents and friends to receive, after four years of intensive study, that passport for future work, their diploma. Pastor Loren Schaller of Manitowoc Lutheran High School, using the example of Joseph, reminded the class and audience that days of dreaming, days of dejection in physical or mental dungeons, and days of diadems of perfect fulfillment in heaven would come for them also. And in all these days God would be with them as He had with Joseph. Indeed these servants sent forth can do all things through Christ Who strengthens them!

The 1970-1971 school year is now over The Rambler staff sincerely hopes that you, the students and faculty of Martin Luther Academy, will enjoy this book of memories. The staff worked hard to make this book possible for you. We tried to capture all the events of this last year for your enjoyment in the years to come. The staff would like to thank all the people who have helped us in the yearbook's publication. We
give our thanks to Prof. Jaster for his time and patience as our advisor Prof. Denninger also deserves our thanks for all the pictures he took for our use. Last of all we want to thank the students themselves for their cooperation and the many candid snapshots they gave us. Anne Oldfield Editor
