ANALYTICAL DRAWING

Movement

Balance

Symmetry

Movement Recipe 1. Imagine 5 various sizes of circles from the same center. Plot 3 points that divides them to three parts. 2. Plot 3 spirals from the center to the points on the perimeter twice with a small gap. 3. Divide the surface to 2 parts. 4. Repeat to each circle. Module 3 - Fabrication

DESIGN DEVELOPMENT

Module 3 - Fabrication

FIRST PROTOTYPE For the first partial prototype, there were so many details that should be revised which are the offset border, the width of tabs to make the construction stronger and technique of putting them together. The problem with the offset border was it was to big an applied around all of the spikes surfaces which might make the cables for lighting can be seen through from the outside. Moreover the width of the tabs were too small and make the construction a little bit loose and also hard to glue.

Module 3 - Fabrication

SECOND PROTOTYPE

For the second prototype, I revised the outer surface to be a closed surface so that the cables that will be put inside can be hidden. Thus, instead of using point attractors for the offset border, I used the fixed size.

Module 3 - Fabrication

SECOND PROTOTYPE The effects for this prototype was not satisfying and need to be explored more. Morever, the movement of the spiral needs to be emphasized more to get the idea back to the sunflower pattern.

Module 3 - Fabrication

THIRD PROTOTYPE

For the third, I made a partial protype that I tried to explore even further. Thus, I changed the widht of the tabs because I found that the bigger tabs I used would make the stronger the construction of the lantern. However, the light effects that appeared was not as beautiful as before. I tried to filtered the light by closing the offset using tracing paper, but it turned out that the effects did not really project properly. Furthermore, I also tried to use the dashed tabs by using Grasshopper in order to get the Thomas Heatherwick’s light effect. Unfortunately, it could not projects the exact effects due to the different material and cutting techniques.

FORTH PROTOTYPE 1

2

3

This prototype had changed the spiralling of the spikes and the effects on the inside parts. The way I did the spiral on the spikes was by twisting the base form and the offset points using gumball. Furthermore, I tried to make a small triangulars manually by using polyline tool after I unroll and baked the surface using gumball. The offset border applied in this mode was used to identify which part needs to be cut to make holes.

Module 3 - Fabrication

Due to the surface is too flat, some of the spikes could not be join together neatly.

FINAL MODEL The final model is the final revision for the forth prototypel. As prototype 3, the holes are just an indicator of which surfaces need to be holed. This model has fixed the third row of the spikes that needs to be edited so that they are not flat and easier to be glued together.

Module 3 - Fabrication

FINAL MODEL

Isometric explains the steps of how I made my model. It starts from the handle by its own . Then stick the last layer of the spikes together, followed by layer two and one. Finally, stick the handle and spikes together.

Module 3 - Fabrication

FINAL MODEL

This final model used 7 pieces of 900x600 ivory card 150gsm. The tabs were made by using Grasshopper with 1 cm width.

Materials:

FINAL MODEL

For the lighting, I used 8 batteries of AA, electrical wire, stress ball and strip LED. I rolled the strip LED around the stress ball in order to get a similar form of light bulb. I attached everything on the handle of my lantern and made a cap to make the construction stronger. Module 3 - Fabrication

Fabrication process

FINAL MODEL

The hand follows the handle when holding the lantern that may be also similar to the way of an adult holding the hand of a child. Module 3 - Fabrication

FINAL MODEL

The triangulars exploded the light effect which is similar to the disk of sunflower. This can be refered as diffused and filtered light effects since the lights come throug the holes and also give brightness to the whole surface. Moreover, the variety of sizes also refers to the size of the disk that scales.
