ABOUT MISSISSIPPI WINES Some of our out-of-town classmates may be - surprised to learn that in the last 5 years, Mississippi has seen the beginning of commercial grape growing and the establishment of a native wine industry. There are now four commercial wineries in operation in the State. The foundation for this native wine industry are wines made from the muscadine,'a distinctive grape found growing wild in the Southeastern United States and nowhere else in the world. Few people who grew up here in the South probably reached maturity without tasting muscadines or some homemade wine made from muscadines, but the high quality and variety of native wines being produced now in the state may surprise you. Also available, but being produced in much smaller quantity are native wines made from French-hybrid and native American grapes which are much more difficult to grow here in Mississippi than the muscadine. Also interesting is the fact that there was a history of wine-making in the state of Mississippi prior to prohibition. We have documented that wine was being produced and sold here in Corinth commercially as early as 1886 from grapes grown in Corinth. Mississippi is also fortunate to have one of the finest wine-making research facilities anywhere in the United States. The A.B.McKAY FOOD AND ENOLOGY LAB at Mississippi State University, Starkville, Mississippi, is carrying on a regular research program to aid Mississippi farmers growing grapes and Mississippi Wineries producing native wines. If you are ever in the area, it is a most interesting facility to visit and tour. Most of the Mississippi Wineries also welcome visitors and provide tours of their facilities. .
