Introduction This book isn’t your standard coffee table book. This book is more than just pretty pictures; it shows the personality and beauty of birds at the Burge Bird Rescue in Kansas City, Missouri. Each bird has a different story to tell and we want you to get to know all of them. Created in conjunction with Fledgling (www.myfledgling.com) this book hopes to show the wonderful, playful side of owing a bird and how each has a unique personality. Fledgling is a website dedicated to educating people on the facts they need to know before bird ownership.

blue
& gold macaw
Jeanna Marie Jeanna Marie is Dr. Julie Burge’s personal companion bird. She’s a beautiful, sweet Blue and Gold Macaw. Jeanna Marie frequents the Kansas City Renaissance Festival with Dr. Burge, though there she is known as the Princess of Parrots. Jeanna Marie does pluck her own feathers but she’s perfectly healthy and happy.
Blue and Gold Macaws Ara ararauna Blue and Gold Macaws originate from South America, inhabiting mostly forests. They’re large birds, usually reaching 30 to 34 inches long. They have an incredibly long lifespan that can be up to and past 60 years. Macaws are brilliant birds with the ability to talk and learn tricks. They love socializing with their owners and require a lot of attention and time.

meyer’s parrot
K.J. K.J. is a resident of the Burge Bird Rescue. He’s a Meyers Parrot, which is a species among the small hookbill variety. K.J. arrived at the rescue because his mom was a little too old to take care of him anymore. He’s a little shy but loves to sit on his swing.
Meyer’s Parrot Poicephalus meyeri Meyer’s Parrots are native to Sub-Saharan Africa, although their wild populations have decreased dramatically due to destruction of the woodlands. Their average size is around 8 inches. Meyer’s parrots are easy going birds, and popular because of their laid back nature.

Bandit Bandit is a resident of the Burge Bird Rescue. He’s a Nanday Conure who came to the rescue because his parents were too old. He’s a sweet boy and loves to play.
Nanday Conure Nandayus nenday Nanday Conures are indigenous to South America, the area their native to stretching from Argentina to Bolivia. They reach a size of 12 inches at maturity. Nandays, like other Conures, are very vocal, which makes them a slightly less popular pet. They make up for their noise level with the intelligence of a large parrot all packed into a small bird.

Freckles Freckles is a frequent patient of Burge Bird Services, the veterinarian practice attached to the Burge Bird Rescue. Freckles is the childhood pet of a college student. He’s now 16 years old and a little bit of a cranky old man, but he keeps his mom company while she lives away from her family.
Cockatiel Nymphicus hollandicus Cockatiels have amazing mimicking capabilities. Many owners take great joy out of teaching their birds to repeat familiar or catchy phrases or tunes. Much of their personality can be seen in their chatter as well as through their very expressive crests.

Twig Twig is a resident of the Burge Bird Rescue. Twig is a Quaker Parrot. He came to the rescue because his parents were moving and couldn’t take him with. He enjoys bathing in his water dish, making big splashes of water all over the place.
Quaker Parrot Myiopsitta monachus Quaker parrots, or sometimes called Monk Parrots, are from the subtropical areas of Argentina and surrounding South America. They usually reach a size of about 11 inches long. As pets, they are very intelligent and social birds. With the Quaker’s ability to speak is it quickly becoming an even more popular pet than the more common Cockatiels.

Harley Harley is a resident of the Burge Bird Rescue. He’s 24 years old and has been with the rescue since a family member was diagnosed with cancer and his family could no longer care for him. Harley is a little shy at first but once he gets to know you he’s a sweetheart who loves to cuddle and sit with you.
Severe Macaw Ara severus The Severe Macaw is one of the largest of the “mini� macaws. These birds reach a size of around 18 inches, which half that length is tail. They can be found in the region spanning from Panama to Amazonian Brazil. Severe Macaws can live anywhere from 30 to 80 years.

Enrique Enrique is a resident of the Burge Bird Rescue. He came to the rescue because his mom went back to work and could no longer spend time playing with and caring for him. Enrique has a lot to learn but loves cuddling.
Cockatiel Nymphicus hollandicus Cockatiels are one of the most popular pet birds, beaten only by parakeets. In the wild, cockatiels are native to Australia and usually live in the wetlands, scrublands, and bush lands. They grow up to 12 to 13 inches and can live up to 16 to 25 years.

Tiki and Viola Tiki and Viola are frequent patients of Burge Bird Services, the veterinarian practice attached to the Burge Bird Rescue. They go to see Dr. Burge for regular check ups. Their owner is a college student. Tiki and Viola keep her company and provide endless entertainment with their playful antics.
Lovebird Agapornis roseicollis Lovebirds are native to the southwestern region of Africa and the island of Madagascar. These birds are very social, spending much time chattering to each other and to their owners. They grow to be about 7 to 8 inches and can live up to 10 to 15 years. They come in many different color mutations, making them very exotic looking, bright birds.

Sebastian Sebastian is a resident of the Burge Bird Rescue. He came to the rescue due to his owner moving away and not being able to take Sebastian with. While Sebastian isn’t one of the more intelligent parrots, he’s still an incredibly good bird who sat wonderfully still for pictures. He loves to coo at his cage mates.
Barbary Dove Streptopelia risoria Barbary Doves, also known as ringed turtle dove, ringneck dove, ring-necked turtle dove, or ring dove, are a domestic member of the dove family. These doves commonly live up to 12 years and are usually 10 inches long. The colors that doves come in has increased dramatically in the past century.

Mr. Feathers Mr. Feathers is a resident of the Burge Bird Rescue. He came to the rescue because his dad grew too old to care for him. In the cage with the rest of cockatiels at the rescue, Mr. Feathers really stands out as a very unique bird. He is an incredibly sweet and smart bird ready to find a new home.
Cockatiel Nymphicus hollandicus Cockatiels come in many different color mutations. As of now, there are fifteen colors identified in aviculture. Some of these colors include grey, pied, pearled, cinnamon, white-faced, lutino (like Mr. Freckles shown to the left), albino (aka whitefaced lutino) and yellow-cheeked cockatiels.

Max Max is another of Dr. Julie Burge’s personal companion birds. He’s a very friendly African Grey Parrot. He’s missing his lower mandible but that doesn’t stop him from chatting. He loves to tell strangers what his name is, especially while getting some pets behind the head.
African Grey Psittacus erithacus
African Greys originate from the Congo area of Africa. They’re one of the medium sized parrots, usually reaching about 13 inches long. The average lifespan of these parrots is usually between 50 and 70 years. African Greys are amazing imitators and have incredible vocal range. They’re best known for their bright red tails.
