The RISC Approach to Schooling is a standards-based approach that educates all students to the highest levels, empowers them to own and lead the learning process, helps them realize their dreams, and equips them with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to succeed in a rapidly changing world. In a RISC system, students move at their own pace through developmental levels in standards, rather than age-based grade levels. Students also must meet an acceptable level of performance, but the RISC approach requires much more of students than the traditional approach to K–12 education. Motivation, engagement, and shared leadership—and clarity that every child can learn—are the pillars of RISC’s whole-child model.

Delivering on the Promise is propelled by the story of one school district’s journey to develop and implement the RISC Approach to Schooling—a dramatic shift in education for which the district won the coveted Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award in 2001.

“Over the years, educators with good hearts and the best of intentions have committed themselves and their schools to the mission of learning for all. Delivering on the Promise is the ‘gold standard’ for making good on that commitment. It details the complexity and dedication required to design and operate an effective learning-centered system. It should be required reading for all educators, politicians, and parents.” —Lawrence W. Lezotte

“The RISC Approach to Schooling is the most comprehensive and well-articulated approach to standards-based reform in the country. This book not only delivers on the promise of what schools can be, supported by more than 35 years of research, but it also provides a roadmap for how specifically this vision can be realized.” —Robert J. Marzano
