THE CIRCLE THEORY
”I have to ask,” I said to him as he walked close to where I was standing, “Where’d you get the hat?” It was not a simple answer. The hat was made for him on some Caribbean island because it was the name of his 42’ catamaran. He then launched passionately into a story about selling all his worldly goods, buying the boat and spending 2 years sailing the Caribbean, diving, drinking and rubbing elbows with the truly rich until money ran out. The tale ends when he sold the boat and came back to Phoenix to continue his job shooting video. Actually, the tale didn’t end there. He, as excitedly as he had talked about sailing, told me all about his videography studio. The out-of-place guy As I was readying to leave and looking for the host to thank him, I spotted someone I knew. Well, at least recognized. I searched my memory but just couldn’t place him. The reason, it turned-out, was I was searching my memory for people I knew in my weekday-business life not in my weekend-riding life. As I got close enough to read his nametag it clicked - John Covington. Yea, you know the guy – Surgical Steeds, custom bikes, national recognition. “What are you doing in my non-weekend persona?” was what I thought. What I said was, “How’s the custom motorcycle business?” “I’m not really doing that right now,” he replied, “I’m a photographer.” Well that explained why a guy in my motorcycle life was showing up in my business life. He
The circle theory The circle theory is something I tell my students about. Tuition for post-secondary schools is expensive these days. Students and the parents of students are scared of the huge investment they are about to make in education, especially when it’s not nursing, electrical engineering or becoming a grade school teacher. I remember, when I was young, my parents always said to me “We don’t care what you choose to do for a career as long as it makes you happy.” “And, we think you’ll be happiest if you become a dentist or a chiropractor.” Much to their dismay, I choose a career in art. Like me, a lot of the students enrolled in our programs are choosing a career their parents wouldn’t choose for them. One of the ways I can alleviate their fears is with the circle theory. It works like this – At the top of the circle is this - Given the opportunity to do whatever you want to do, you will do what you like to do. Very few of us in our free time would choose to wash dishes or clean up dog poop or carry big boulders up a steep hill. Most of us would choose to ride or see a movie or surf the internet. If you do whatever you choose to do a lot, you get pretty good at it. And after you get good at it, you like it even more and do it even more. Let’s
Some of us are really lucky and this exact thing has happened in our lives. Brett Favre; Bruce Springsteen; those weird father-and-son, TV, chopper guys (the ones that yell at each other all the time); and everyday people like the hat guy, John Covington and me. We all are paid to do what we really like to do. Does this really relate to Motorcycle rights? Absolutely - albeit in a round-about way. Those of us who volunteer our time to this organization do so is because we like riding. And we want to ride the way we want to ride. We want to ride without having how we ride dictated to us by laws and regulations. And we understand that to do this, we need to make our voices heard. We know that if we want to continue to have the freedom to ride the way we want to ride, we need to fight for the right to do so. And we know that a collective voice is stronger than any one voice alone. So, we join an MRO because we like riding. And we want to ride the way we want to ride. And we understand that to do this, we must make our voices heard. (Are you beginning to see a pattern here?) So, simply, it comes down to this - if you’re not a member of an MRO, then join one and protect that right. And keep doing what you like to do ride.

The event was held at a small design studio downtown. I met writers and designers, freelancers and people who work at agencies, and old friends. At one point in the evening, I spotted a guy wearing a hat I had to inquire about. I have a friend who is always talking about having a fallback position, what he calls “Plan B.” The hat that the guy-wearing-the-hat was wearing was emblazoned with the phrase “Plan B.” I had to ask him where he got it so I could purchase one for my friend.
Both these guys along with others I met that evening are passionate about what they do. The hat guy loves sailing and shooting video. Obviously, photography was a first love for John Covington because it’s not something one just decides to do and expect to be successful at.
Here’s where the circle part comes in. Once you’re seen as the expert, someone is going to come along and figure out a way to make money from you doing the thing you do. Better yet, they will be willing to pay you to do it. So, it comes full circle and you end up getting paid for doing what you like to do.

The next day, out of pure curiosity, I looked him up online. If you’re curious, the Surgical Steeds website is still there plus a website about his photography studio. I found out that he attended ASU and studied advertising and marketing and at some point, transferred to the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, a very prestigious art school that includes among its alumni, Willie G. Davison.
say, for example, you like playing video games. It’s not all that much fun the first time because you can’t steer or kill anyone because your aim is off and you can’t get past the first level. However, as you do master those things the game is more fun and you play it more. Soon, you’re showing off to your friends and you are recognized as the “expert”.

Creative Connect is a meeting of creative types who are mostly in advertising or design in the Phoenix area. People mingle and share ideas and business cards in hopes of getting business or doing business or getting hired or hiring. I was there in hopes of hiring, as we always need industry people to teach part-time. I wasn’t very successful at my intended goal but it was an interesting evening, nevertheless.
showed me pictures of his studio (way cool!) and explained that he shot a lot of the women and bikes for Easy Rider and Tattoo Savage magazines (sad, but someone has to do it).

I teach and, I think because I complained about things the loudest, they made me the head teacher. From the Chairman We got great reports from many people this month on the excellent participation at our Motorcycle Day at the We Dome. have many folks to thank but I must mention Betty and CJ, Bobbi Hartman, and our own Tom Corr who provided a wonderful meal for everyone despite suffering from a nasty case of pneumonia. What a trooper! There was a great turnout of MMA members from all over the state, and what has been reported to be one of, if not, the largest number of bikes in front of the Capitol since we have been doing this event. Kudos to all who came, and especially to those who volunteered in some capacity. Whether it was manning the registration and membership tables or helping serve meals, this event was a success because of you. Special thanks to Bo who did a fantastic job of making everyone feel welcome as well as spending time with Steve Weir in his office discussing the issues that are of the most concern to those of us who wish to ride both free and safely. The other event held this past month was the Beach Party. This too was very well attended. It also succeeded in raising funds for our coffers, which could use a little "bailout" money. However, we’re helping ourselves and not letting Big Brother do it for us, thus saving our kids and grandkids from paying for the things we need to
protect our rights and those who come after us. Whether it was the band, the good grub (provided by our friends at A.I.M.), the bike contest, tattoo contest, and new for this year (inspired by our own Chubby) a great Hawaiian shirt contest, everyone had a great time. For those who attended for the first time, we hope the memories made will keep them coming back for years to come. I must admit that it saddened me to be unable to attend both of these events, but I had major medical issues I was dealing with, combined with a move from my previous digs to a house that my lovely lady Meg and I just purchased together. Thanks again to all those true friends of mine who came and helped, particularly on the last day of the move, which saw me winding up in the Emergency Room – again. To end on a very positive note, more and more folks within our MMA organization are participating at a much higher level of involvement. Our membership is starting to expand again, and new Districts are being proposed. I received a very happy phone call from Ron Zimmer from Page who had just signed up 5 new members, renewed a bunch more, and had about 5-6 people who all wanted to ride down together to the April Board meeting. They want to introduce a newly nominated Board prospect as well as get to know more of the folks from around the state and see how a Board meeting progressed. With all this very positive activity, undertaken by many more people, my confidence in the strength and future of the MMA of Arizona grows weekly. Keep up the great work and bring more of your friends and riding partners on board! Thanks for all of those who do what you do! Colin

If You Ride Be Informed There are two very important Motorcycle Rights conventions coming up. They are a great place to find a wealth of information pertaining to motorcycle rights, what you can do in protecting our rights and learn what other States and/or Organizations are doing that might be applied within our own community. The first one is in Reno, Nevada. It is the National Coalition of Motorcyclists’ (NCOM) 24th Annual Convention. The Convention is organized and funded by Richard Lester and his team of Aid to Injured Motorcyclists (AIM) Attorneys. What other attorneys do you know that put so much back into the Motorcyclists Rights? The second one is right here in Phoenix, AZ. “Best of the West” is sponsored through the Motorcycle Riders Foundation (MRF), Arizona’s only Federal Motorcycle Rights Organization. This seminar is being hosted by Modified Motorcycle Association of AZ. (MMA–AZ), American Bikers Aimed Towards Education (ABATE) and Arizona Confederation of Motorcycle Clubs (ACMC). Both of these events will have meetings, seminars and group discussions focusing on safety issues, legal rights, legislative efforts and litigation techniques to benefit our right to ride. We have the opportunity to network with like-minded individuals throughout the nation. Don’t let these opportunities pass you by. For more information, please contact Tom Corr (MMA –AZ Vice-chairman) at 1-520-252-9675, Bo Molzan (MMA–AZ Interim Co-vice-chairman) at 1-928-399-0238 or CJ Swinford (MMA–AZ Chairman Emeritus) at 1-602-788-2088. Casa Grande District What a great success Motorcycle Day at the Dome was this year! Some of the legislators reminisced back to when it wasn’t nearly as big of an event, but they did remember the event and the purpose of MROs. As it becomes larger, we make contact with even more legislators who participate.
Anyone with suggestions, please contact me and I’ll hopefully have the answers!
Casa Grande had many people attend this year. The event is always a good experience. Many legislators attended the event to have lunch and visit with us, including two from our District. This event is one of the most powerful meetings we motorcyclists can coordinate and attend to protect our rights in the future. Plans for next year’s Motorcycle Day at the Dome have started, so mark your calendars now as a reminder to request time off in March 2010 so you can participate. The location for the District’s motorcycle awareness booth for the month of May is being discussed. We are hoping to be at one of the City of Casa Grande parks during the Cinco de Mayo celebration. We would like volunteers to attend and help for an hour. This is the perfect opportunity to include the entire family. You can donate an hour to help spread positive information, have fun, and enjoy great food! Meetings are held on the first Sunday of every month at 11:00 a.m. at the Silver Bullet Bar, (520) 836-1363, located at 1401 N. Pinal Avenue in Casa Grande. For more information about the Casa Grande District, contact Steve Musgrave at (520) 426-0069 or Tom Corr at (520) 252-9675. Mike Messer Cochise District There was a vote at the last district meeting to hold an MMA of AZ membership drive held in the Cochise Dist., in Sierra Vista, AZ. The date will be May17, starting at 11 a.m. at the Sierra Vista City (Veteran's Memorial) Park, use the Fry Blvd. entrance. State MMA representatives will be on hand to speak with and explain why your participation is so important to you and the rest of the motorcycling community. The situation is growing beyond each individual State's borders; we are faced with dealing with more things on a Federal level than we have in the past. We plan to offer a hamburger, chips & soft drink (or bottled water) for $4.00 to all who attend. If an individual joins at the event, they
Animal Cochise Dist. Mgr. MMA of AZ Grand Canyon District Greetings and salutations to all of our MMA Brothers and Sisters! The Grand Canyon District held its monthly meeting at Hog's Restaurant (a business member) on Sunday, March 1, at 9:00 am. I discussed the issues from the Board of Directors Meeting held in January at the Punkin Center. The members were advised of the issues, including those that need to be addressed with the State Legislature. District members agreed that a comprehensive ROW Bill, including felony criminal sanctions for offenders, must be a priority. Additionally, issues concerning the mobile speed cameras and cell phone use by cagers need to be addressed for the safety of motorcyclists and drivers alike. District members asked that I bring these issues to the attention of the Board at the next meeting in April. I also informed the membership that an NCOM account needs to be established for the district so that members can attend the annual NCOM meetings. 2010 has been set as the first year for this district to send members since we're still getting off the ground. We had three prospective members attend the meeting. Jim Klever, Tim Hoffman and Carl Smith were given information about the MMA, including what we are about and what we as a district intend to accomplish. Carl Smith notified the district members that he intended to join. We wish to let all riders know that MMA is a motorcycle rights organization and that all individuals, riders or not, are welcome to attend our meetings. Then, if they like what they see and hear, they are encouraged to join this MRO. Carl not only decided to join, he also graciously allowed himself to be nominated and voted in as Assistant District Manager (to be effective after his yearly dues are paid). The District is excited to announce yet another business member. Jim Cruz, owner of 2Bar3 Historic Restaurant and Saloon, 5877 Leupp Road in Flagstaff, joined in February. 2Bar3 offers great food and has an excellent saloon, staffed by very cheerful people. Jim is a hard-riding brother who cares about ensuring that all have a great time in his biker-friendly establishment. If you are in the neighborhood, please stop by and support this new business member.
Speaking of 2Bar3, Jim allowed the District to have its first-ever event at his establishment in June. Brothers and Sisters, please mark your calendars for June 19-21 as the Grand Canyon District hosts the Fathers Day Delight. This threeday event, in the cool mountains of Flagstaff, will offer free on-site dry camping. There will be live music both Friday and Saturday nights, with raffle prizes and bike games on Saturday. Additionally, the district will host fun rides throughout the area so that you can enjoy riding in the cool pine air. Ladies, you may wish to know that our female members have a special activity scheduled for your amusement. Vendors are welcome (donations will be gladly accepted, but you will not be required to pay a fee). We intend to have a great time and we welcome all riders to attend. A Sunday meal is included with paid admission. Cost is $20 per person all weekend ($15 for MMA members) or $10 per night. For more information, please contact Chris Kite (928-853-1211) or Steve Briggs (928-527-3151). We are really looking for other districts to attend this first ever event for our district and we hope that you will join us. As a special note: Jim is not charging our district anything to hold this event. He is doing his part to help our new district become an even more effective member of the MMA family. Back to the meeting - our district is going to get t-shirts made and start marketing them soon. Chris Kite will attempt to contact the Flagstaff Chapter ABATE coordinator, Scott Gold, to see if we can schedule a joint motorcycle awareness event to be held in May in Flagstaff. We will keep you posted as to what occurs. There are a number of officer changes. Lisa Garner, our former Treasurer, resigned as Treasurer to become our Activities Director. Joan Casey-Briggs became the new Treasurer. As previously stated, Carl Smith will become our Assistant District Manager. <Editor, please note these officer changes for both the Patriot and the MMA website> This district doesn't give a damn what that groundhog forecasted. The Cabin Fever Crew is already celebrating the riding season. We would like to thank all who helped to make the Beach Party in New River a truly outstanding event. Although it was cold traveling down I-17 that morning (a cool 17 degrees), we had fantastic riding weather the rest of the day and truly enjoyed ourselves. The MMA is a proud organization and that was readily noticeable at the Beach Party. We are also excited about attending Screw Laughlin as most of our members are planning to go. We look forward to visiting with you all at Jake's Corner.

I know that February is a short month, but wow does time fly when you’re having fun. Here in Rim Country we love to have fun and do so quite often. Listed below are some of those fun events coming up. Camp Lunatic Members Appreciation Party April 4-5: Our new Activities Officer has put this party together for our members just for the fun of it and everything will be free. In hard economic times, it’s nice to just have fun and not spend a dime. There will be pool, horseshoes, music, slab dancing, and two different fire pits. There is even a trampoline (that should be interesting) to jump on. MMA State Rally May 22 -24: I’m really looking forward to this year’s State Rally (please don’t snow this year). This event is always a good time and a great ride to get to. The cost is only $15 dollars for a single and $25 for a couple. Bikini Bike Wash June 27 at Sidewinders in Pine: I love this event; it is one of my favorites. We had a huge turnout last year and at a price of $5 a bike wash, the girls washed a lot of bikes. We hand out awards for the Cutest Bikini Babe, Best Custom Motorcycle, Best Stock Motorcycle, and others. This is the must attend event in Rim Country. I’ll see you there. Our next monthly meeting will be held at the American Legion in Payson on Hwy 260. The meeting will begin at 10:00 am Sunday, April 19. We will be doing our Adopt a Highway road cleanup before the members meeting. We will meet at the rest area on hwy 87 and hwy 188 at 8:00 am. Those who come and help will get some tacos after the meeting. Thanks to everyone who make all this possible. Fear No Freedoms Spinner Salt River District Are y'all ready for the State Rally? Verde Valley District Fellow Freedom Fighters, Spring is upon us. The riding weather is great to say the least, especially when it comes to central and northern Arizona. The snow is gone and the average temps during the day are around 7080 degrees. As you ride through the canyons of northern AZ, you will see that they are coming alive again. This means it’s time to get out and enjoy these days. It is also time to make sure we’re working to educate and inform the public about motorcycle awareness and motorcycle rights. This is very simple to do. If you are not comfortable talking to people directly then you can easily carry some of the Governor’s office on highway safety motorcycle awareness councils literature with you to hand out or leave at places that you stop. Additionally, you can also find great information on the MMA-AZ website that you can print up and pass out or again just leave a few things everywhere that you stop. The more that we are all out there getting the message out, the more effective we will be in accomplishing our goals of motorcycle rights, safety and education. Be as involved and proactive as you possibly can. If anyone is interested in becoming more involved feel free to contact me by phone, email or in person, I would be happy to help you with ideas and plans of action. It was a great day down at the capitol for Motorcycle Day at the Dome. What a wonderful turn out; thanks to all those that road in from out of town. Always remember that the town limits sign doesn't say "NO MOTORCYCLES BEYOND THIS POINT." Get out and support events and gatherings as much as you can, especially ones like the day at the dome. I had the pleasure of meeting with District 1’s Senator Steve Pierce and Representative Andy Tobin in their offices. They were very sincere in their pledge of support for motorcycle rights and the MMA-AZ in general. They gave me their direct contact information to avoid all the red tape in case we should ever need to get their attention on something headed toward or moving through the Arizona legislature that would affect motorcyclists. Additionally they both stated that they would contact me if there is anything they get wind of that would affect AZ riders. I feel the day was a total win-win for both our legislators and us. Tom - great food man! You are the smoker master! The Verde Valley District has had a few changes recently, as you may know. As I have been working more and more at the state level, assisting Tom and Colin with the day-to-day operations of the MMA-AZ, it has taken time away from my working on Verde Valley District operations. Have no fear; the district has been in very capable hands during this time. Eric Seitz, our district Quarter Master, has been appointed Interim District Manager during my time of transition and let me be the first to say that Eric has been doing one hell of a fine job. He has organized and drafted the long awaited MMA-AZ Verde Valley District working papers and district by-laws. They have since been reviewed, approved by the District office and General membership of the District, and forwarded to state for the official record. Great Job Eric! We are looking forward to the future as well as the State and our district working more closely together.
It has been great to see how the Verde Valley District has rebuilt over the last year. We’ve had a huge burst in membership with a large number of old members coming back around and getting involved. The unity and teamwork of the District leadership and officers has been phenomenal. It has truly been a pleasure to be part of this team. Keep it up and rolling forward with the full throttle attitude, and we will move mountains in the future to come. Don't forget that the MMA-AZ 2nd quarter board meeting will be held in the Verde Valley District, Saturday, April 11, 2009. It starts at noon at Flinn's in Rim Rock. Hope to see you all there. Come on out and see what your district reps and state officers are doing for you. Honor, Respect, Loyalty & Freedom! No man's life, liberty or properties are safe while Legislature is in session By Tom Corr State Vice-Chairman, MMA of AZ Vigilance is a word you will often hear in the MRO world, and I suspect when most hear someone talking about being “vigilant” and staying informed they immediately think about the state legislature. In all reality the cause extends way beyond the state level and to be effective, you as a member of an MRO, need to monitor not only what is going on in your state but in other states too, and more importantly you also have to watch what is going on in Washington D.C. Gideon John Tucker was an American lawyer, a politician and a one- time (Arizona) newspaper editor. Tucker is credited for saying in 1866: "No man's life, liberty or property are safe while the Legislature is in session." How true and profound, that statement is. It is those truths in part that may have helped our MRO forefathers establish organizations such as NCOM, and the MRF. The National Coalition of Motorcyclists (NCOM) and The Motorcycle Riders Foundation were both ideas whose times were long overdue. In the mid-eighties just a few months apart they became realities. The very first conferences, one in St Louis the other in Las Vegas found leaders of various motorcycle groups from across America meeting to discuss "coming together" on a regular basis and the need for a voice on a national level to protect our life-style and right to ride. Seminars put on today by NCOM and the MRF are specifically designed to educate and motivate members of the motorcyclists' rights community. They are fantastic learning opportunities and offer a great chance to meet other peo-
ple who are just as passionate about motorcyclists' rights as you are. These gatherings afford U.S. motorcycle associations as well as motorcycle associations from Europe, North America, Australia and New Zealand, a way of networking information and expertise. It also affords opportunities for the mutual exchange of information and legislative strategy, and the combined strength to fight all that is adverse to our freedoms of the road. The bottom is everyone benefits. If you care at all about your rights as rider you need take a proactive stand and make plans to attend one or both of these conferences this year. NCOM is holding its 24th Annual Convention at the Nugget Casino and Resort in Reno, Nevada on May 7 - 10. Reno is about 790 miles away and takes about 13 hours to get there. If you ride it will cost you about $50 in fuel and a room will run you about $75 a night. The BEST of the West 2009 conference is closer to home in Phoenix on June 12-14 at the Crowne Plaza by the Phoenix Airport. A room there will run you about $90 a night and includes breakfast. There is really no reason for anyone in the MMA to miss the BEST of the West 2009. The admission to these conferences are paid for by the MMA, all we ask is that if you attend you take good notes and bring the information back and you share it with your district. Take advantage of these conferences get involved "Ask not what the MMA can do for you, but what you can do for the MMA"
Freedom Beach Party 2009 What a great day for a Party. The weather was great for riding. We had over 682 people sign in, and as usual, it looked like everyone was having a great time. Fools Life started playing at noon. They were great, of course, and kept the crowd going. The Roadrunner also did a great job on the food. This year they did pulled pork and I heard lots of folks say they enjoyed. We had a great turnout for the Bike Show (winners below). There was also a best Hawaiian shirt contest (winner below), and last, but not least, a Tattoo contest. This year, Jim, the owner of Sketches, came out to help judge the contest (winners below). I would like to thank the vendors for their support. I would also like to thank all the volunteers that came out to make this event a success. Lee, Kames, Vince, Holly, Dave, Valerie, Stiffy, Gerald, Debbie, Pam and Bob...you guy's from the Leather District rock. Also, thanks to Mary Hart, Yukon Jack, Betty, CJ, Joe Tess, Brooke, Muskrat and Casa Grande for helping with the AIM booth. What is happening at the Copper Dome?
names of your State Senator and two State Representatives.
I don’t know about you but this year is going by way too fast. It’s April and before long we’ll be complaining that it’s to hot. A lot of motorcycle events going on around the state with a lot more to come the rest of this year. Speaking of events if you missed the “Motorcycle Day at the Dome”, you missed a great day. The Motorcycle Rights Organizations- Modified Motorcycle Association (MMA), American Brotherhood Aimed Towards Education, hosted the event (ABATE), Arizona Confederation of Motorcycle Clubs (ACMC). What a turnout of bikes and legislators. We had approximately 150 bikes, close to 200 riders and 32 legislators in attendance.
Please – we can’t do this alone! Your voice spoken to the legislators that you put in office is a very powerful tool.
Motorcycle Day at the Dome was established to allow MRO members to spend time with the various legislators, talk about issues, and ask them for their support on bills that the Motorcycle Lobbyists have introduced. We also want to show them that we are not only on the same page, but that we are actively taking a part in the legislative process and want and need their support on our issues. It gives us a chance to personalize ourselves and let them know that not only do we take part in putting them in office, but that as their constituents we hold them accountable. I want to say a BIG thank you to all that helped put this together and attended. We are making a difference and with your help, we can continue to do so. We received a lot of very positive comments from our Legislative folks on what we’re doing and how we’re involved. We continue to learn from each year and expand. We’ve already had a meeting to go over what went well and what things we can do to make it better for next year. It’s going to be a great train ride. So, let’s keep it moving. I want to say again that the Lobbyist Team is really committed to making a difference. We couldn’t do the things that we do or make
changes if it wasn’t for the Lobbyist Team working together and supporting each other. We work hard at setting up relationships, and therefore building the rapport and credibility necessary to do what we set out to do each year. We work closely with Committee members to give them everything they need to understand the purpose of our legislation, how important it is to all motorcyclists in Arizona, and answer any questions they may have without hesitation. We need your help. Why? Because even more powerful than the voice of your lobbyist amongst the state legislators, is the voice of their constituents. You! We need additional volunteers to participate in what we originally referred to as Legislative Specialist s– now called “The Defenders Program”. Clubs and organizations throughout the country are getting behind their lobby teams to support their states through this top-notch program. Your club/charter or organization district/chapter can help by providing at least one, if not more, member(s) to become a Defender. We will need that person’s Name, Phone, Zip code, Address, District, Org/Club, and Email. Send this information to caoreilly48@aol.com. Between the MMA, ABATE and ACMC, we will pull all the defender’s together on a master list. When your lobbyists need things done or have a Call to Action, we will give you explicit instructions and all the information necessary to do what we are asking of you. Many times, this will entail contacting your legislators. If you’re not sure who that is, your Legislative District number is on your voter registration card, or you can go to www.votesmart.org, enter your zip code on the top left and look under State Legislative to find your District number and the
Currently, the two (2) bills that we’re involved in and supporting are SB1060 and HB2133. We continue to watch SB1137 but our main concern with this one right now is to make sure that everyone has a Motorcycle Endorsement on their license. That is critical to this bill. Update on Emissions bill from last year: ADEQ will call us when they are ready for a stakeholder meeting. Once they notify us, the Public Hearing will be scheduled for Maricopa County. There is only going to be one hearing. After the hearing, they will only need a short time to finalize the SIP and then get it sent to the EPA. Since our bill became final in Sept '08, this will likely be done in less than a year. Unfortunately, the EPA can take up to another 12-18 months to finalize it. Even so, with any luck, we should be “Emission Free” sometime in 2010, by the end at latest. I want to thank everyone for your support, emails and many comments. It’s not easy to get some of these bills through as you all know, but through the involvement of our Lobbyist, Defender Program and concerned folks, it gets done. This year and probably next year are going to be difficult on some bills due to the economy. We’re already seeing this year that a lot of time with our Legislative folks is spent on 2009 and 2010 budget. Your continued support will help make sure that our issues aren’t forgotten. Motorcycle Day at the Dome I know this is overdue, but I wanted to take a minute to give a great BIG thank you to those of you that helped to make the 2009 Motorcycle Day At The Dome, the best one ever. I would guess that we had over 150 bikes and 200 riders attending, as well as 32 state legislators present. I can't even begin to tell all of you the gracious comments that we received from those legislators in attendance. Every time I looked around, I observed some of our members sitting and talking to them. Legislator after legislator commented on the fact that they had "personally"' been contacted by our members and invited to the luncheon. Everyone truly appreciated the 'cheat sheets' describing our current legislation and its status, and they made a direct impact on the legislators, who were sure to take one with them. The purpose of this event is to have our members spend time with the various legislators, talking about our issues, and asking them for their support on the bills that the motorcycle lobbyists have introduced and are running. It also shows them that we are not only all on the same page, but that we are actively taking a part in the legislative process and want and need their support on our issues. It gives us a chance to personalize ourselves and let them know that not only do we take a part in putting them in office, but that as their constituents we hold them accountable. The legislators LOVE this day as well. One of the Senators recently told me that when the
Page 12
motorcycle lobby first started coming to the capital steady, which was about 1999, they, the State Legislators, didn't take us very seriously. They knew nothing about us. They didn't have a clue as to what our issues could even be, and that it wasn't until we starting coming year after year and passing bill after bill that they started to take real notice. He agreed that they could no longer afford to ignore us, let alone not take us seriously. I believe that had a whole lot to do with the fact that your lobby team, made up of lobbyists from ABATE, MMA and ACMC are continually hard at work setting up relationships, therefore building the rapport and credibility necessary to do what we set out to do each year. This one day on the Senate lawn brings that all together for us. It shows the legislators that not only do the motorcycle rights organizations have a superb lobby team, but that they have members, who are their constituents, that support their lobby and are all on the same page as well. A BIG thank you to all who helped make this happen! All the volunteers that helped with SignIn, the Organizational Tables, the Food Line, and on and on. And, a BIG, BIG thanks to the ALMA for their ongoing efforts in directing traffic and assuring that all motorcyclists in attendance are safely parked.
