Motorcycle Day at the Dome With 17th Avenue closed again this year, many more motorcycles are expected and
No matter what it’s called, we’ve been doing this for 8 or 9 years. ABATE, MMA, ACMC, the Legislators, and special guests like the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety (GOHS), the motorcycle council and city council members get together to eat and talk. One of the coolest things I think that comes out of the eating and talking (the talking mostly) is the realization that bikers are real people. People with jobs and kids and concerns and voter registration cards.
this luncheon or motorcycle day should be bigger and better than ever.
While it was a very inspiring event, it had little impact on the Legislators. The Rally was held on the weekend when they were nowhere near the Capitol. So, it was decided by the leadership of all 3 orgs, with input from the lobbyists that our focus should be on this event instead. Motorcycle Day at the Dome is held when the legislators are in session and on site. If we want to impress them with numbers, this is the time and place to do it.
The current Luncheon on the Lawn/Motorcycle Day at the Dome committee is made up of the following organizational reps: Bobbi Hartmann (chairman) - ABATE Designated Lobbyist; Carole O'Reilly ABATE Authorized Lobbyist; Skypilot -

If you would like the Motorcycle Patriot delivered to your home each month see our membership form on page two.
You may have noticed that the Freedom Rally is no more.
All motorcyclists are welcome. Call your representatives and ask them to join us. Then take a long lunch on February 18, drive or better yet ride down to the Capitol and make a difference.
Complimentary Issue
The purpose of the luncheon is pretty simple; get our representatives and state senators out of their offices on a beautiful Arizona afternoon, feed them lunch and sneak in a discussion of important legislative issues facing motorcyclists today both here and across the country. This year’s event will be held on Wednesday, February 18, 2009 from 11:30am to 1:00pm on the Arizona House & Senate Lawn, 1700 W. Washington St. in downtown Phoenix.
In previous years the number of bikes at the event ranged from 20-35 and easily fit in the 'bus pullover' in front of the Senate lawn. In the summer of 2007, a Luncheon on the Lawn Committee was formed and went to work to put on a bigger and better LOTL for 2008. With the closing off of 17th Avenue, we were able to safely accommodate 136 motorcycles.

From the Chairman I hope you're as excited as I am, as we have passed the winter solstice (the longest night of the year) and are headed to ever-lengthening amounts of daylight, as as well w a r m e r weather. The w a r m e r weather will be appreciated, at least up here in the High Country. I rode to meet some friends for breakfast this morning and it was 29 degrees on my bike thermometer. It's nice to be spoiled on days like this with heated grips! Riding home a little later, the wind had really picked up and I was really happy for having fairings in front of me. I hope everyone had a joyous holiday season, with plenty of time with friends, family, and others with which to make the time even more special. I was really fortunate to have very special friends who invited me over for Christmas dinner, as my Meg was in California spending the holiday with her mother so she wouldn't be alone (Meg's dad died around Thanksgiving). It was nice to enjoy a fabulous meal, celebrate what Christmas is all about, and once again remember that the most important things in life are not things at all. I look forward to the coming months, starting with our next Board meeting where we will be setting forth and prioritizing goals we wish to achieve in 2009. We will be welcoming in new
officers to fill some of the state positions, as well as welcoming in new Board members. There is much to remain conscious of in the coming year, as our freedoms continue to be eroded away, as well as our local, state, and Federal governments continue to find ways to fine us to refill their coffers which are now empty due to mismanagement on the governments' part. It's kind of like me screwing up my cash flow and then expecting my bank to "bail" me out by paying checks with no funds behind them. Oh wait, that is now okay (or should be) because those of us who work and pay our taxes get to help out those who don't or who steal from us----and we get to pay! Why didn't I think of that? Seriously, it is up to us to do everything we can in the New Year in the following areas or risk having government tell us how to do it their way. (After all, doesn’t a politician know better than we do what's good for us?) Whether it is making sure that all of us and our riding friends have the proper training, endorsements, and insurance; promoting motorcycle awareness on the part of the general road-using public; or having training (free and voluntary) for riders in our local areas to brush up on our riding skills, unlearning bad habits and learning new good ones, it is up to all of us to do everything we can to help ourselves and others to protect ourselves physically, financially, and freedom-wise. To do this, we need to think outside the box. Here in Yavapai County, where the median driv-
ing age is 106, some of us like Victor Borelli of the HCD, give brief presentations at corrective driving schools so that those folks have a chance to understand how they can do their part in preventing crashes with motorcyclists. After all, if you are t-boned by a Buick, it doesn't matter whether or not you are wearing a helmet, armor, etc. the car is going to win. We also need to push our legislators to toughen the failure-to-yield and DUI laws, especially when a person is killed due to the indifference of a cager. For instance, there is a county District Attorney in another state that is charging people who kill others while driving drunk or negligent with murder. She is getting the word out that it's not just a crash anymore; it is a felony to take another's life with a vehicle – not an "accident". I learned a long time ago: there are no accidents except acts of nature, only someone screwing up while behind the wheel. Crashes are caused by people, and those who suffer the consequences the most are those of us who are on two wheels. So make a pledge to yourself and your friends that you will do something positive this New Year to make motorcycling more fun, safe and free than it has been in the past few years. Looking forward to seeing you with bugs in your teeth! Colin "Cinders" MacDiarmid Chairman of the MMA of AZ

District Reports Casa Grande District Recently Bobbi, Steve, Dave, and Mike presented the Motorcycle Awareness Program (MAP) to the driver’s education class at Casa Grande High School. There were 44 students in attendance and the presentation was well received by all of them. You can contact Steve for info on the next planned presentation or if you would like to help, this is a very positive method of educating soon-to-be new drivers on the road. Plan on attending Motorcycle Day at the Dome, 2-18-09, with fellow motorcyclists from all around the state and meet your legislative representatives. There are several new ones that were elected last November. Legislators in the past have said how much they enjoy the lunch and like visiting with us. Furthermore, they are people with interests just like us and this gives us the opportunity to share our interests with them. Casa Grande District meetings are held on the first Sunday of every month at 11:00 a.m. at the Silver Bullet Bar, (520) 836-1363, located at 1401 N. Pinal Avenue in Casa Grande. For more information about the Casa Grande District, contact Steve Musgrave at (520) 426-0069 or Tom Corr at (520) 252-9675. Mike Messer Cochise District Well, the first monthly meeting for the New Year consisted of the regular members I can count on, plus one. That made a total of six attending. We discussed the probabilities of what we would be dealing with in the upcoming legislative session (State & Federal). And that's it from the Cochise District. Animal Grand Canyon District Happy New Year to all of our freedom fighting brothers and sisters! The meeting that was scheduled for January 4, 2009 did not occur due to more snow in the Flagstaff area and assorted illnesses among our members. Therefore, we do not have a monthly report for January. We wish all of our fellow MMA members a great riding year and a productive year in supporting our rights as motorcyclists! Ironhorse District Our new District is off and running. Our meetings started back in September and have kept growing. We are now a group of 91 with 11 business members. I would like to welcome our new business members – Ride Smart, Chuy’s Grill, and Al’s Meat Market & Italian Deli. Thank you for your support! Membership is a big priority for us in the coming year. We all need to do our part in bringing in new members every month. United we stand and to stand tall we need to increase our membership. We all need to be planning now to have the biggest turnout ever for the Motorcycle Day at the Dome, formerly known as Luncheon on the Lawn. This is the one event of the year that gives our members the opportunity to do what we ask of them in every meeting – to talk to their Legislators and Senator face to face. Dawolf, from High Country District, stated in a report awhile back that it would be great to have 30,000 bikers show up on the lawn downtown. I think he is right and to get to that number we need to drive membership. It would be nice to start this year with at least a couple thousand bikes and that number is attainable if we pull together. We were glad to have two Legislators join us in October for our meeting. Ray Huston invited Rep. Judy Burges and Rep. Jerry Weires to our meeting to talk with us. They both came and it was very informative for all. We need to keep in contact with these people and let them know what is important to motorcyclists. In November’s meeting, we discussed the importance of us all having a motorcycle endorsement. As we move forward on tougher Right of Way legislation, it will also affect everyone that does not have a current or valid license for both cages and motorcycles. It will also become a factor in obtaining and/or retaining insurance. So go take your test or you can attend a school that will teach you safety, riding skills, and get you your license all in one. It is up to you how you do it… just do it. We also held our elections and here are the results. In April, we will go back to summer hours and the
meetings will be at 6:00pm. We had our first Xmas Party out at Western Trails Ranch on Sat. Dec 13. The Westsiders joined us and we had a Great turnout (300-350), a lot of fun, and made some money for both Districts. Santa A. Claus traded in his reindeer and rode into the Ranch on his nice white Ultra Glide. Everyone enjoyed visiting with him. We had a GREAT band, “Sticky Monkey,” that rocked the place all day long and they donated their performance to our cause - the MMA. There were games for the kids, vendors, an auction and good food! We made $1200 for MMA! We also did a food drive at the door to help out the local food bank that had been completely depleted and the Fire Dept hauled off 1 ½ truckloads of food and $650. They were VERY grateful. So thank you to all of you that helped make it a success. Now we are into the New Year… Let’s all move forward, increase our Membership, and awareness of “What an MRO is? ~ What an MRO does? ~ How can I support an MRO? ~ How does the work of an MRO affect me?” We need to share the answers to these questions with ALL motorcyclists. We must unite and work together with a clear and strong focus to achieve our goals. So bring a friend or two to the next meeting and see how you can make a difference. Until then…. I’ve decided this year that my resolution is to complete the resolutions from last year and the year before that . . . well I think you get the idea! Our January meeting covered all the officers’ reports and the Board report and changes at the State level. Steve Musgrave has been elected the new NCOM representative from our region. Congratulations Steve! The Webmaster position is currently available and the idea of having several people work as a Webmaster committee was discussed. The next Board meeting will be on January 17th at Punkin Center. Setting District goals was again discussed. The need to pass a ROW law was one of the top issues talked about and as well as the need for membership. The desire to have members attend conferences like Best of the West and hosting small fun runs and get-togethers was also expressed. The District decided to host a pot luck

after the February meeting. Join us, attend the meeting and bring a dish along to share! The annual Luncheon on the Lawn -- now known as Motorcycle Day at the Dome -- will again be held in February. Everyone who is able was encouraged to attend. When attending, take the time to call your reps to let them know you will be attending and that you would like to meet them and discuss the issues that are important to you. The Freedom Beach Party is once again just around the corner! This year it is on February 21 at the Road Runner. This event is one that is near and dear to my heart (right after the Cave Creek Crawl). Probably because it is the very first MMA event I attended after moving to Arizona and I haven’t missed one since. For a whopping 5 dollars you get live music, a burger feed, a bike show, tattoo contest, vendors, raffles and door prizes, and you get to spend time with some of the best people on the face of the earth! Join us! The floor was opened up for discussion and high on everyone’s mind was drinking and riding, especially now with the zero tolerance being enforced. The hidden costs of being caught drinking and riding (driving) was also brought up. The impact can be staggering. The new license plate law was also brought up. As the meeting came to a close, the drawings were held. Donna won the 50/50. Mary won the membership and donated the money back to the District. Congrats. The closing prayer was giving by Lisa and the meeting was adjourned. See you all next month! Till our paths cross again, Mary Hart Co-DM, BOD Member Northern District No District Report this month Rim Country District Hello fellow riders and freedom fighters, As the New Year begins to gain steam things are continuing to grow along with the momentum. I hope that more people will get involved in our push to gain more freedoms and our defense the rights we still have. More and more Rim Country Districts members are getting involved in what goes on at the state level of our government. As the communications officer and general “political addict,” I’ve been getting a lot of questions concerning everything from facial recognition cameras to license plate laws. It’s good to see members wanting to see actions taken by other bikers in other states and learning from what was done. As Americans continue to be angered by those we elect to office, more people are deciding to take control back and in the MMA we also see this happening. This year looks to be a very good one as the riders of this state are finding their voice. One of the ways to meet your legislators is by going to Motorcycle Day at the Dome (formerly Luncheon on the Lawn). On Wednesday, February 18 at the Arizona House and Senate Lawn, we will sit with our elected legislators from 11:30am-1pm and discuss issues that are important to us. I would like to thank all the people who worked hard to set this up. We’ll come prepared to do our part. This past December we raised over 300 toys for children this Christmas. The Payson Fire Department delivered Santa to Marcy’s house where over thirty local children from Payson Community Kids had gathered to meet him. Thanks to all the AAA drivers who donated toys
to our drive. Thanks also to all the members who donated toys. All of you brought some smiles to children who could use a little holiday cheer. As a thank you Marcy handed out raffle tickets and one of our members won a nice Ghost Rider tapestry. Until next month ride safe and be free, Fear No Freedoms Spinner Salt River District Hi - Hope y'all had enough rain, a good Christmas and a Happy New Year. Well, things are going to change from the President down to our district; from emissions, ROW, Arizona’s Governor to the local SRD elections. It’s that time again, time for volunteers to stand up and make a difference. If you don't, noone is going to protect your rights for you. We had 10 riders show up for the DVD run to the Veteran's Home. We donated about 50 DVD's to help fill their DVD Library. The next SRD meeting will be at the River Bottom just N of Florence at 10 am on Sunday, Febuary 8. Hope to see you there. Be Safe, Mike S. MMA/SRD/DM Lobby Liaison Tucson District No District Report this month Verde Valley District Happy New Years fellow freedom fighters Now that the elections, holidays, and legislative recess have all come and gone we can all get back on track and focus on the work ahead of us. With that said, I feel that our work might be a little easier going forward with the positive changes that are happening on both a state and federal level. The incoming Transportation Secretary is very motorcycle-rights friendly; Peters is history in Washington and her political future doesn't look bright in Arizona; and Jan Brewer, a longtime friend of Arizona riders, is headed for the Governor's office. I, for one, am very optimistic and excited about the future for Arizona bikers and riders and am greatly looking forward to working with our new legislators. The Verde Valley is look better and better every day. We continue to grow stronger with more and more members stepping up and getting involved and active. There has been a steady flow of new members thanks to the hard work that all the Verde Valley District members do out on the streets every day. On January 1, 2009, we had a record-breaking turnout for the Frosty Balls and Chilly Boobs Run. The day started out cold at K&A Cycle. Keith had hot coffee and breakfast ready for all riders and it was greatly appreciated. As the morning continued, more and more riders were rolling in. Soon not only was K&A Cycles’ lot full, but the Rockn' B Saloon lot and Cottonwood Street were also full of bikes. What a sight! The run went off without a hitch. Everyone had a great time. However, this could hardly be called the "Frosty Balls" run because after about 11:00 am we reached some great weather and temps for the rest of the day. By noon most of us were riding in T-shirts. Again thank you to all that came out and supported the event. Run pins are now available at K&A Cycle in Cottonwood. If you were on the sign-up sheet, you can pick the pins up for free. If you were not on the list, there will be a limited supply available for $5 each.
Keep your eyes on the Verde Valley this year; we have a lot of great things in the works that will impact every rider, cager, trucker, etc that drive in the state of Arizona. I don't want to let the details out just yet but rest assured that what we have been planning will help make everyone aware of motorcycles. Not only us more visible but to get our issues upfront and in their faces so they know we are out there and that they won’t be able to avoid the P.S.A. program once it gets up and going. Like I said, this is a statewide program we are working on and I am sure that you will all love the idea once it is up and running. We will be hosting our annual "Sweethearts Run" March 14. 100% of the profit will be going to Cathy "CAT" Smith who suffered a severe brain injury in early January and is still in intensive recovery. It’s Easier Than You Think! We have all done things in our past we wish we hadn't. On January 9th, 2000 I went to jail for possession of a dangerous drug-class 4 felony and drug paraphernalia - class 6 felony. For almost 9 years, I used the excuse of not having my rights to justify not voting and not getting involved in our legislation. Then a few months ago, I was at a Board Meeting when it hit me. I needed to get off my ass, stop hiding behind my mistakes and get more involved. So, in November of 2008 I got online and looked up the laws on getting my rights back. In Arizona, if it was a first offense your rights are automatically restored. Cool I thought. This was my first and only offense. But because I got two felonies at the same time, did this still count as a first offense? I made several calls to try to get this question answered. No one could tell me.
A very interesting van seen in Tucson by Tom Corr
So, I decided to just do it. I called the County Clerk's office at the Court House and asked them to send me the Restoration of Rights documents. In two days, I had the application in the mail. I made sure I read all the instructions and filled out the documents just like they said. I went and had them notarized, made three copies and sent them back. On December 1, I received the notification that my hearing was set for December 22nd. I was going to start the New Year off right. On January 7th, just two days short of 9 years to the day of my arrest, the Judge signed the papers that gave me my rights back. My New Year’s resolution is to get more involved in the fight for my rights. I know who represents my district in the Senate and who my representatives are for the House. All three are logged in my address book on my computer. I thought if I told my story, and it made just one person get more involved, then it's worth airing my personal business. So please, make the effort. It’s easier than you think! Becca Holyoak

MMA is the Charity I read a really good article written by James (Deuce) Bronder, he was a guest columnist in the Akin Standard newspaper from Akin SC. Why prey tell, would I be reading a newspaper from SC? It is a throw back to the days of when I was the editor/owner of Thunder Roads Arizona, I read and still do read motorcycle related articles from all over the USA. I would then take some of what I had read and use it as a subject matter for my editorials. I felt it was a good way to inform readers of the various forms of legislation being perpetrated upon motorcyclists on a daily basis by the federal and various local governments. I did this in hopes of giving the riders of Arizona, information that maybe valuable in the long haul; you know what they say knowledge is power. After I quit doing Thunder Roads, some one once wrote, that I should not have used the letter from the editor to preach to my readers about what I believed in. He went on to imply that I was to negative and that negativity is not acceptable. He said there are enough bad things happening all around so why add to it. It was said that my editor’s letters were nothing more than the rants and raves of a mad man. Now I don’t know exactly what that writer meant when he called me a mad man. All though he is right, I am a man and I am mad, or should I say angered. Angered by the fact that out of all the motorcyclist’s in Arizona, there are only a few of us who really seem to care. That writer was right though, there are bad things happening all around us. But sweeping them under a rug is unacceptable and that kind of attitude will only nurture our problem’s ten fold. Like it or not people our rights are being stripped away on a daily basis, according to the courts and our current laws. The life of a motorcyclist is typically only worth $85, if some one violates their right of way, and we as MRO’s had to work hard to just get that. Bruce Arnold once wrote something on MRO’s it was very profound, something so true that I am going to share it with you here. He wrote, "The battle for bikers' rights is not about patches, parties or poker runs. We fight to protect the freedom and promote the interests of American motorcyclists ... to defend our right to choose our own modes of transportation, attire and lifestyle ... to deter and defy discrimination against us ... and to vanquish those who violate our rights or right-of-way. (How true that statement is).
Deuce posed some very good questions; do bikers really know where the money goes? Do they do any research to see if indeed the charity is a biker friendly organization? Will these organizations bikers give untold amounts of cash to, put in a word for us with those who continue to attack our lifestyle and/or legislate against us? I can almost guarantee you the answer is no. Deuce went on to write, Do bikers really know who or what organizations will come against them? He then made some very valid points; points some may never consider, points that might be interesting to look at. Any type of Health care organization - just think about it for a second, they are the first to stand up and testify against a biker’s freedom of choice in legislative hearings. Many charity organizations either fund lobbyists or campaigns of politicians who are not friendly to our cause. Many have ties to insurance companies who are now lobbying for "source of injury inclusion" written into insurance policies. If you don't know what that is, well you better learn. In simple terms, if you have an accident on a motorcycle, your medical insurance coverage is null and void. Bottom line: it allows them to refuse benefits based on the source of injury. Motorcycles are the first on the list, as are other activities. Why don't we take a lesson from the charities that use us to raise money for their causes? We should put some of that money in our own fund so we can help pay for the expenses of those who work for us on motorcyclist’s rights at the capital, expenses that are paid out of their own pockets. According to the article the National Safety Council reported, last year 103,000 bikers were maimed, crippled and injured. Another 5,154 were killed. Many were victims of negligent motorists who escape penalties because of lax right-of-way laws that we have fought to change, with no luck I might add. To add insult to injury, bikers get the blame for social costs to the State after the accident. We may want to start helping ourselves instead of a charity that already receives millions. Based on the article, I suggest that before we continue to attend charity events or hand over donations from our run’s to all these charities we have been supporting, we find out whom we are really giving it to.
And how true was the article, by James (Deuce) Bronder. Deuce wrote that he had checked various event calendars in the State of SC, for November. Bruce said, he found 50 motorcycling events. 48 were charity benefits, one a swap meet and flat track event.
The author also went on to explain, that he has lobbied for biker rights for a long time and has never seen one benefit recipient back up a bikers rights issue. Not one letter, phone call or email has ever been sent in regards to a legislative motorcycle rights issue. Not one voice rose to defend us against those who tarnish our image.
Think about it, there were 48 charity benefits in just one month, in just one state. Now think about 50 states, over the course of a year. Just how much money do bikers raise, by either holding or attending those benefit runs, hundreds of thousands, millions maybe?
Don’t get me wrong here people, I am not against being benevolent and helping out a charity, I just think we need to curb our generosity a bit. The cold hard fact is, in order for us to achieve our goals in the MMA. We need to reex-
Page 12
amine who we are donating to, and where that money goes and if and when it will benefit us. Some of these companies have hefty war chest’s full of cash and are able to hire very expensive lobbyists to come our state capitol and fight against our rights. All the while our volunteer lobbyists, are doing the exact same job, only they are doing it on their own time and their own dime. How ironic is that, we support a charity, unbeknown to us, the charity in turn supports or funds some sort of legislation we are against. So in essence, the charity is now enabling others to use our own money against us. Kind of counter productive for us isn’t it? I know not all charities we support hire big guns to lobby against us, but I do at times wonder just what is that charity really doing with the hard earned cash I so eagerly gave to them? There are ways to find out how much of the money you donate actually goes to the cause. A little research on www.charitynavigator.org for example revealed, of all the money donated yearly to the Arizona Heart Foundation. Only 58% of that money really goes to the cause. Expenses eat up the rest, 42% of the donated funds are claimed as admin costs and 20% of those admin cost’s are the executive administrator’s salary. On the other hand you have the Society of St. Vincent de Paul of Phoenix the recipient of our Birds on Bikes efforts. Of all the monies donated yearly only 7% are spent on admin costs and the rest goes to the actual cause, 93% that’s pretty impressive. So what about the charity organizations that either fund or have ties to companies that fund, lobbyists and the campaigns of politicians not friendly to our cause. How do you find out who they are? Remember there are many organizations and companies who are now lobbying for "source of injury inclusion" written into insurance policies. Well I have the answer on how to find out this information too, Dave Kopp, MMA member and President of the Arizona Citizen’s Defense League provided it. First order of business, go to www.azlobbyists.com/ and search on "clients" to find the name of the lobbyist working for a particular company. From there, you can go to www.azsos.gov/scripts/Lobbyist_Search.dll and search on the lobbyist's name (I suggest using the last name only, that will avoid misses because of differences in punctuation, etc.). When the search results come up, you can click on the "LOB ID" (Lobbyist ID) for more detail, including a list of "active principals", which are the companies the person is lobbying for currently. It also lists employees, inactive principals, quarterly reports, etc. You can click on "PPB ID" (Principal/Public Body ID) to get more detail on the principals.

What is happening at the Copper Dome? First of all, I’d like to introduce myself. My name is Mick Degn and I’ve been elected the Designated Lobbyist, taking Ray Huston’s place. My hope is to be able to learn and be as involved as Ray. Ray Huston, Bobbi Hartmann, Skypilot, Carole O’Reilly and Steve Musgrave made a great team and I hope to be part of that team. Wow, it’s hard to believe that 2008 is behind us and we’re starting in the New Year at full speed. Elections are over and the legislators are back in session on January 12th with a lot on their plate. If you go to the web site as of today, it is updated. I know many or all of you know the web site but again it’s www.azleg.gov. Lots of information here. You can find out who your State Senator and two (2) members of the House of Representatives on this site. We (Bobbi Hartmann, Skypilot, Carole O’Reilly, Steve Musgrave and I) have been busy since the end of the year working with different folks at the Capital to position ourselves for 2009. We’re off to a great start as we’ve been working with Senator Linda Gray on ROW Legislation, Representative Jerry Weiers on Motorcycle Safety Fund-Council Sunset extension, and a number of other areas. You will see emails from the Lobbyist Team and that team is all of us listed above. The Motorcycle Lobbyist recently met with DPS on a bill that they are running this session. Currently, it is law that when a person is found to be driving/riding on a Suspended or Revoked License, that their vehicle is towed and kept for
30 days, or until the owner comes to the impound yard with proof of their license being reinstated. This would include proof of ownership via registration, title, insurance, etc. The bill that DPS is introducing (bill# as soon as it's known), will revise this statue to include the towing of anyone driving / riding a vehicle without the proper endorsement (i.e. Motorcycle, Semi Truck). The Statutes 28-3511 and 28-3512 are where the revisions are being made. According to DPS and the statute, you will be given a hearing date when ticketed and towed. If you get your endorsement prior to your hearing date, you will be given the proper paperwork to get your motorcycle released to you immediately. If you cannot get your endorsement prior to your hearing date, you can ask for an extension so that you can. The bottom line is don't wait until your vehicle is towed - get your endorsement now. We will be advertising and advertising on every website, in every newsletter, and putting flyers in shops, etc. If this bill passes and is signed by the Governor, it will be 100 days from the end of session (probably September) until it becomes law. Once it passes and is signed by the Governor, the DPS will be making their advanced advertising / media experts available to get the word out to the general public through TV and Newspapers and other resources. We will keep you updated on the status of this bill.
In previous emails sent out the Lobbyist Team asked for your help. Our plan is to put together a group of “Legislative Specialists” that will be committed to assisting the Lobbyists as needed. We have a list of folks but can use your help as well. If you are interested, please send me an email at Mdegn40669@aol.com with the following information: Full name, complete mailing address including zip code, email address, phone #, Legislative & Congressional District (can be found on your voter registration card or on the www.azleg.gov website) Each year MMA, ABATE, and ACMC host Luncheon on the Lawn, now referred to as “Motorcycle Day at the Dome”. The event for 2009 will be held Wednesday, February 18 from 11:30am-1pm on the Senate lawn of the State Capitol, 17th Ave between Washington and Jefferson. This is a great way to meet your Senator and two Representatives. We’re back to some nice riding weather and a lot of riders are out there. Ride safe and well trained. Don’t hesitate to contact me if you have a Lobbyist question. If I don’t have the answer, I’ll get it. Thank you and have a Great year. Ride safe Mick Degn MMA Designated Lobbyist Mdegn40669@aol.com
MMA is the Charity Continued from page 12 As an example, if you go to the "client" search at the first site and look for "Harley-Davidson", you will get "G. Michael Williams". If you then go to the second site and put "Williams" in the "LOB NAME" field, it will pull up a list of lobbyists with the name "Williams", including both "G Michael" and his firm, "Williams & Associates". If you then click on the "LOB ID", of each, you'll see a client list, etc. Note that Mr. Williams lobbies for various police groups, the liquor industry, several health care companies, and Redflex, the traffic camera people, among others. I suspect Mr. Williams is very expensive to hire and work’s solely for the highest bidder and I will also bet he does not care about us, one-way or the other. I hope you have found this article informative.
Bobbi Hartmann and Paul "Skypilot" Price. Skypilot, LimeyRiders MC and ACMC's Designated Lobbyist, has been selected to fill one of the vacant positions on the Arizona Motorcycle Safety Advisory Council (AMSAC) with Bobbi Hartmann, DaveNovitt and PJ Janik. Bobbi has been a council member for some time and has recently been appointed Vice-Chairman. The two additional positions, to make a 5-person council, have been open for more than a year. We are fortunate as motorcyclists to have two members on the Council that are also bikers.
Remember the MMA is a Charity! We need the money just as bad as the other’s. Besides with the MMA you won’t ever have worry about some one lobbying against you. The MMA is lobbying for you, and you never have to wonder where your money is spent. If you do, it is real easy to find out. Just attend a district or a board meeting and you will know how every red cent was spent. Tom Corr Interim, Vice Chairman MMA of Arizona

The bill that DPS is introducing (bill# as soon as it's known), will revise this statue to include the towing of anyone driving / riding a vehicle without the proper endorsement (i.e. Motorcycle, SemiTruck). The Statutes 28-3511 and 28-3512 are where the revisions are are being made. According to DPS and the statute, you will be given a hearing date when ticketed and towed. If you get your endorsement prior to your hearing date, you will be given the proper paperwork to get your motorcycle released to you immediately. If you cannot

HEADS UP - BE AWARE The Motorcycle Lobby has recently met with DPS on a bill that they are running this session. Currently, it is law that when a person is found to be driving/riding on a Suspended or Revoked License, that their vehicle is towed and kept for 30 days, or until the owner comes to the impound yard with proof of their license being reinstated. This would include proof of ownership via registration, title, insurance etc.

get your endorsement prior to your hearing date, you can ask for an extension so that you can. The bottom line is don't wait for a tow - get your endorsement now. We will be advertising and advertising on every website and in every newsletter and putting flyers in shops etc. If this bill passes and is signed by the Governor, it will be 100 days from the "end of session", probably September, until it is law. If this bill passes and once it is signed by the Governor, the DPS will be making their advanced adverstising / media experts available to get the word out to the general public through TV and Newspapers and other resources. We need to start now - yell this from the roof tops - we knew it was only a matter of time. Bobbi Hartmann ABATE Designated Lobbyist For The Lobby Team
For All MMA-AZ Members The Modified Motorcycle Association of Arizona is pleased to announce that we are adding another benefit for members of our organization. At a special meeting of the 23rd Annual National Coalition of Motorcyclists (NCOM) Convention this past year in Houston, Texas, "Doc" Reichenbach (Chairman of NCOM Board of Directors & President ABATE of Florida) informed attendees that we, as an organization, could acquire a $2,000 Accidental Death & Dismemberment benefit for our members at no cost to our members. After bringing this idea back to the MMA-AZ Board of Directors, we received approval to proceed. If you are a current member of the MMA-AZ you will be receiving a letter from us about this benefit. New members will be notified as well. MMA-AZ is jointly sponsoring this benefit with American Income Life Insurance Company (AIL). As always your contact information has not been shared with anyone, which is why the MMA is sending this information directly to you rather than AIL. In the letter, AIL offers additional services. These other services are optional and are not supported by the MMA. Thank you for being a supportive member of the Modified Motorcycle Association of Arizona and "continuing to support each other in our struggle to maintain our rights as motorcyclists here in Arizona, the Nation and the World." Thank you, C J Swinford MMA Representative to American Income Life Insurance Company (AIL)
