Our future, while still unknown, is starting to take shape. The economy sucks and it’s probably going to suck for a while. Governor Napolitano is about to take a job in Washington and Jan Brewer is going to take the helm here in Arizona. Whatever else that may bring it means Mary Peters is coming home to roost with a friend at the Copper Dome. California may introduce motorcycle emission testing so we better stay vigilant about ours coming back. And I will continue to write and ramble about the same things I’ve always written and rambled about. In the past year I’ve written about getting involved in motorcycle rights by joining an MRO and then about getting involved as a member of an MRO. I wrote about getting involved and voting whether you were an MRO member or not. The

For the Beautiful Michele and me the past year could best be described as, “it could have been worse.” We are both working harder because coworkers were laid-off but we still have jobs. Michele was diagnosed with cancer but the treatments were successful and we get to spend another New Year’s Eve together. We bought a house at maybe the worse time ever to buy a house, but despite people losing their houses all around us, we’re in no danger of losing ours. Our advice for the coming year is (you guessed it) get involved. Whether 2008 was bad or absolutely great, our wish for you all is that 2009 is better. Like most years, the year we’ve had has been both good and bad. We’ve once again lost some good friends and supporters. Joe Egg, Joe Bochenek, Ken Jones and others. And like most years, we’ve gained some friends and supporters as well. We also made some gains in the political arena. It’s only a matter of months before motorcycle emission testing in Arizona is history.

From the Chairman I know this is an extremely busy time of the year for all of us, with Thanksgiving just over and religious and holiday events looming just a days away, but it is very important to those thank around us who have given so much to our organization over the past year. Whether it new be D i s t r i c t Managers, Board members, or new State Officers, I cannot thank you enough for all the thoughts, effort, and time (many, many hours on the phone and emails), and I hope that you all will do the same. There are too many to mention by name, but I will personally thank Tom Corr (who has really stepped up to help with some of the personnel issues in the last few weeks), the Swinfords, Cindy Gates, Cindy Currey, Michele of the new Iron Horse District and of course our fine Editor of the Motorcycle Patriot, Howard Gelman and his lovely "assistant" Michelle. Thanks to all of you. May the New Year give us renewed vigor in tackling the many motorcycle rights issues that we continue to face and new ones looming just over the horizon. As we approach and then begin the New Year, let us (Board members, DM's and general members) all take the time to really think about things that are most critical in our work as an MRO, and what priority we need to give them. What committees do we need? Who wants to
step up and work on those committees? Who will be responsible for both taking Board ideas and actions back to their Districts and who will make sure that their BOD member is fully informed at the District level what their thoughts are on the above. It has been a challenging year for me in so many ways, but I think we are closer to being more united than we have been in quite a few months. I am optimistic that with determined membership and a strong Board that many great things can and will happen in 2009. Just remem-
Letters to the Editor Re: point counterpoint Received my latest issue of "The Patriot" today. Allow me to speak my mind. I Read with some dismay the ravings of an ardent "no helmets period" advocate in the current issue. One could draw some similarities between this person others that are unwilling to accept the fact that there are differing points of view. Seems the writer gave it away with the phrase "draw a line in the sand" There are some other folks far, far away that have drawn a line in the sand and will not accept anyone that does not ascribe to their fanatical views. Is the day coming that unless we are do-rag wearing, pipe blaring, ink sporting riders of vintage American Iron we can't be considered "bikers" by this select group of self involved zealots? I hope not for all our sakes. First and foremost MMA is or should be a group of folks dedicated to the pure joy of riding, be that on two wheels or three. Second the group must never loose sight of its' mission to protect the rights of EVERYONE THAT ENJOYS RIDING.
ber, it is not what the folks sitting at the front table can do, it is up to all you in our success in the future. Finally, I wish everyone a very Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukah, or anything else in December, as well as a safe, happy and more prosperous New Year! It has been my pleasure to serve you over the last year and hope to continue to do so in 2009, at your pleasure. Sincerely, Colin "Cinders" MacDiarmid Chairman of the MMA of AZ
That includes those that choose to wear safety gear up to and including helmets. Does someone wearing a helmet so frighten your writer that he or she would exclude them from the brotherhood or this organization almost sounds like it. SAD! I know a guy that wears full gear, including helmet and knee pads. Do I think its' kinda weird? You bet, especially in August. But in my mind this fella is just as much a biker as the next guy, maybe more so as he rides his bike almost daily, year round and goes way beyond hopping from tavern to tavern looking cool. So I guess my personal message is this: Recognize that not everyone is going to agree with your narrow view of the world. Accept that this is so, never waver in your fight for what you believe in but avoid becoming a "single issue terrorist" over it. And remember your point of view is automatically more credible if presented in an intelligent and sane manner. By the way, I ride H.D., don't like helmets, have a tat or three and my bike is kinda loud. But I don't think that makes me qualified to force myself on others. Fred C. (The Fred Dog) Frederick

have been a success. We had standing room only at the November event and we raised $78 for our treasury.
Casa Grande District After the general election, our District # 23 has one new representative in the State House and a new Congresswoman in District #1. Our reps are: Ann Kirkpatrick, Congress, District 1 Rebecca Rios, State Senator, District 23 Barbara McGuire, State House Rep. District 23 Frank Pratt, State House Rep. District 23 As the new people get settled in to their new positions, their information and contact info will be available at our monthly meetings. Recently Red Dog (Dave Williams) met with the City of Casa Grande and provided information on the traffic signals that don’t recognize our motorcycles. He was assured that they would take one of the police bikes to those intersections and have them recalibrated for us. Thanks Dave! Casa Grande District meetings are held on the first Sunday of every month at 11:00 a.m. at the Silver Bullet Bar, (520) 836-1363, located at 1401 N. Pinal Avenue in Casa Grande. For more information about the Casa Grande District, contact Steve Musgrave at (520) 426-0069 or Tom Corr at (520) 252-9675. Mike Messer Cochise District No District Report this month Grand Canyon District The Grand Canyon District wishes that all of our brothers and sisters in the MMA had a great holiday season! Our monthly meeting was held at Hogs Restaurant at 9:00 a.m. on Sunday, December 7. The membership reviewed and then accepted the monthly meeting minutes for November, 2008. After old business was concluded, we spoke of the new business for our district. As the new BOD member for the Grand Canyon District, I will ask the BOD to consider making a Right of Way (ROW) Bill the most pressing item on the legislative session for the upcoming year. This was prompted by the tragic death of a Sober Riders member who died this past week due to a ROW violator. The membership agreed that this type of legalized murder needs to stop and that too many brothers and sisters are dying tragically due to ROW violators. Our members wish to send our sincerest condolences to the Sober Riders and to the family of the lost brother. Chris Kite, our District Manager, stated that our monthly Bike Nights (held on the third Tuesday of each month at the Hog's Hideout)
Chris also reported that the Yard Sale held by our district in November raised nearly $406 for the treasury. We now have enough funds to open a district checking account and Chris will contact Betty for additional information about it. We wish again to express our appreciation to Larry Herrera, Phoenix District, for providing many of the items sold at our yard sale. Larry rounded up a ton of items he no longer needed and transported them to Flagstaff. Thanks, again, Larry! Ralph Kraske and Lisa Garner presented the membership with a new events banner. They displayed the banner that was provided by the Pepsi Cola Company in Flagstaff. Pepsi provided the beautiful event banner for our district free of charge! The banner is magnificent and can be used for all of our district events. We wish to thank Pepsi for their generous contribution to our district. Steve Briggs will send them a letter of thanks. Lisa Garner is attempting to get additional advertising for our district in local newspapers so that motorcyclists in Flagstaff and the surrounding area know that the MMA is open for business in the Grand Canyon area. Chris Kite will also attempt to advertise our District in Craigslist (which will need to be renewed every 45 days). Chris Kite reminded the membership to continue pushing memberships. At the December meeting, we signed up two new members. A special thanks to Stan Morton and Steve Koval for joining MMA of Arizona and helping to protect the rights of all Arizona motorcyclists! Yes, Betty, I'll be sending you the membership forms and dues this week. I presented a copy of the booklet entitled a Rider's Rights and Civil Liberties, as well as three different bumper stickers, to each member present. These items were provided free from the Law Offices of Richard Lester. A special thanks to Mr. Lester and his staff for providing these much appreciated supplies. Stan Morton spoke of a riding club that he had formed this past year. Arizona Twin Arrows Road Riders is a riding club that keeps folks in Flagstaff, Prescott and Phoenix notified of motorcycle events in Arizona. There is no cost to join this riding club (it is a no patch entity) and Stan will keep all members apprised of upcoming events. You can get additional information about Arizona Twin Arrows at http://aztwinarrows.org. We wish all of our brothers and sisters of MMA of Arizona a safe and happy New Year! High Country District The High Country District is looking forward to the holidays. Our December meeting was a Christmas party and planning session for 2009. I asked our members to make the district theirs. We discussed what we want to accomplish, runs to raise money for the MMA, and how each member can better let their voice be heard both locally and nationally. On November 22, a benefit ride was held to help out the Thompson family (Jeremy, Trevor, Kaitlyn and Alexis). Jeremy's wife, Kristen passed away only three weeks after giving birth to Alexis. Jeremy is part of our local medical/fire community and HCD members Royce, Axman, Griz, and Doc put together the benefit. 55 riders showed up, including many members of the HCD. This just goes to show that no matter how tough the economy is bikers are the ones with "hearts of gold." I can see a year where we can have more freedoms and better protect the rights we have. I look forward to a year of victories for us and the freedom they bring. I’m not saying the fight will be easy, but it can be accomplished! New people will join the fight and with them they bring new ideas. With new ideas comes the opportunity to combine what we already know works and explore new frontiers of our struggle. The New Year looks to be good and I greet it with open arms. Remember the world is run by those who show up. Our toy drive was Dec. 6th and everything indicated that it was going to be pretty big. I would like to thank Ed, Jo-Jo and all the AAA drivers all over the state of Arizona who donated a toy. It’s people like you who make a difference. We have 8 volunteers to deliver the toys on their motorcycles. We’re hoping to get a fire truck escort like we did last year. It really brought smiles to the kids. Santa will hand out toys to kids who could use a little help this holiday season. Thanks to everyone who made this possible. Next month we will come out with our yearly ride calendar, so keep an eye out for it. There will be some great rides up along the rim. Until next year ride safe and be free.

Fear No Freedoms Spinner Salt River District First, I would like to thank everyone that went on the Sunshine Acres Run. We gave out about 120 poker run sheets. At least 60 of y'all went to the SA home and some gave the kids rides. I want to thank the businesses who sponsored our stops, Sky's, Capitan's, Spirits, Joeta's and the end stop - Smokey's. I also want thank Delmar Leather for the donation we gave out for best hand and Ray Vaillancourt for all the knives and the bag that we gave out as raffle prizes. We also received a check from the Victory Riders. Together with the other checks we received, the total we were able to donate along with the gifts was $2292.60. We want to thank CJ for bringing up the fact that you need to check your MC insurance to make sure your wife is covered. (5 Minutes is not too long to take to check.) Hopefully your policies are right and you never find out differently. Our January Meeting will be at Norton's corner, Jan. 11 at 10am, 20835 E. Ocotillo Rd. Queen Creek, AZ Gay Hayward was the lucky winner of the 45 cal. Rifle that we raffled off. For the way the economy is we did exceptionally well, selling 480 tickets out of 500. These monies will be used to send an SRD member to NCOM, Meeting of the Minds and Best of the West. I personally want thank Boone for donating the time and labor in building this collectable. I also want to thank all the ticket sellers for their time - Boone, Belch, Hank, Jeff and Gary. We can't forget all of the people who bought and made this possible. At the January meeting we will be having nominations for all the SRD officers for the next year. So if you've got a little time and the inclination to fight for our MC rights, step up to the table. I know times are tough right now but my wife (Willie) and I hope you have a Very Merry Christmas and a Prosperous New Year. Be Safe, Mike S. MMA/SRD/DM Lobby Liaison
Peters is a Republican who holds permanent residence in Arizona. Mary Peters is coming home and she will be looking for a job! Mary Peters will now have a Republican Friend running the state of Arizona, Jan Brewer. Getting the picture? Possible total disaster for Arizona riders! Or is it?
Don’t forget the MMA-AZ Verde Valley District’s 13 annual, Frosty Balls And Chilly Boobs Run, January 1, 2009. This is a great Tradition and great way to start off the New Year. Look for flyers and information everywhere or give me a call. Big-Bo 928-399-0238
Jan Brewer has a long history in the political arena of Arizona. She has held several positions from Secretary of State and Chairman of the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors. Prior to that, she spent 14 years in the Arizona State Legislature, first as a state representative from 1983 to 1986, and then as state senator from 1987 to 1996. As senator, she held the leadership position of Majority Whip from 1993 to 1996.
Well brothers and sisters that is all for now. We have our work cut out ahead of us and must all rally together to promote the MMA-AZ and motorcycle rights in the up and coming months of the new administration both state and federal. See you all in 2009. I am sure that is will prove to be a great year.
As a state legislator, she has a proven track record as a supporter of pro-gun and pro-motorcycle rights. I’m not sure of her current views, so I sent her an E-Mail on 12/12/2008 with the following questions. I had not received a response by the time I wrote this. However, I hope to be able to publish her responses to these important questions in my next report. 1) What are your views on mandatory helmet laws for motorcycle riders in Arizona? 2) What are your views on motorcycle rights and freedom of choice for riders? 3) What are your views on gun owner rights? 4) What are you feelings on statewide photo radar enforcement? Enough of that. In November, the Verde Valley District rallied together for the annual Hams on Hogs Ride and collected turkeys, hams, canned food and cash donations to give to the Cottonwood Old Town Mission. Upon our arrival at the mission, we were greeted like royalty by the volunteers of the mission. They were overwhelmed with contributions and efforts of the Verde Valley “Bikers”! They showed so much appreciation that we became overwhelmed with the reality of the small but heartfelt gesture we all made that afternoon. Thank you to all the Verde Valley Members that came out and participated.

Tucson District No District Report this month Verde Valley District Well Brothers and Sisters our future is now in sight! The Holidays seasons are moving right along as well as the political future for the State of Arizona. Pending final confirmation by congress our Governor Janet Napolitano (D) will be leaving us for her new cabinet position as Secretary of Homeland Security with the Obama administration. What does that mean for the citizens of Arizona? Simply that our Secretary of State Jan Brewer (R) will be sworn in as the Governor of Arizona early 2009. This is an interesting change for the state. Arizona will change overnight from a Democratic governed state to a Republican governed state. Not that this is bad or good but major change never the less. As I see it and in my opinion, this could have some good points. Why? Hopefully some of the new and rather annoying laws and or policies that have been forced on Arizona in the last few years or months, like Napolitano-backed statewide photo radar, could go away. That is a possible view of the good. The possible view of the bad is, Mary Peters is officially unemployed come 01/20/2009. Mary

BIRDS ON BIKES I would like to thank everyone who came out November 23. I believe it was the biggest Birds on Bikes we ever had. The final count - we turned in $2000 and 5000lbs of turkeys. Way to go! In addition to all the MMA members that came out, I would like to thank the Spartan Riders MC, Medieval Maidens MC, Desert Thunder MC, CMA MC, and Brothers of the Third Wheel. If I left anyone out, please forgive me and know that your support was greatly appreciated. I was so busy running around trying to collect more funds for the food bank I may have missed a few. We raised $810. Thanks to everyone who dug down deep and made this possible. I was able to purchase 68 turkeys from Food City with 1/2 the funds the MMA State donated. The 43rd Ave and Glendale Food City was happy to contribute and gave us a great discount. The rest of the money was donated as cash to help St Vincent De Paul’s purchase the rest of their Thanksgiving Fixin’s. Thank you all for your support and helping feed those less fortunate. RCD’s Birds on Bikes On Nov. 22nd, Rim Country set up a Motorcycle Safety and Awareness booth in the parking lot of Safeway. We packed up Thanksgiving dinners on our bikes to deliver to 20 families in our community. Thank you to everyone who came out to deliver the dinners and to our officers who helped at our Safety booth. Thank you Wal-Mart, Jim and Sandy Mazzone for donating the pumpkin pies. A special thanks to Safeway for donating the turkeys. From Rim Country, Happy Holidays to everyone.
