Sleazy, Wheezy, Queasy, Breezy Rider friend of mine reminded me recently A that this year is the 40th anniversary of the release of the film “Easy Rider.” I remember seeing it for the first time at a theater in East Lansing, Michigan where I was attending Michigan State University. I’ve probably seen the movie a hundred times since. Each time I do there is one scene that really sums up the movie for me. Peter Fonda, Dennis Hopper and Jack Nicholson are camping outside a small Southern town, where the locals were less than friendly. The Jack Nicholson character tries to explain his opinion of why they are seen as a threat to these locals. “They’re not scared of you.” he says to Dennis Hopper’s “Billy,” “They’re scared of what you represent to them. . . What you represent to them is freedom. . . Oh yeah, they’re gonna talk to you and talk to you and talk to you about individual freedoms, but they see a free individual, it’s gonna scare ‘em.” I think that statement is really true. I think it was true then, I think it is true now and I think it will be true in the future. And I also think that it is the reason some of us are “bikers” and some of us are “people who ride bikes.”

This is not another “Real Biker” debate. This is reality as defined by the ultimate motorcycle movie. The Easy-Rider ideal of a biker is a truly free individual. And very few of us are “free individuals.”

I have a lot of respect for the 1%ers. Yes, they scare most people. Do they scare them because they are perceived as rebellious and unruly and sometimes unlawful? I’m sure that’s part of it but maybe, just maybe, the thing that makes them really scary to most is that they are truly free. Bikers who live the lifestyle have given up on social mores, “acceptable“ behavior and sometimes laws, especially those they see as unjust. They ride

“I’m not a real biker because I’m willing to obey.” because it is their nature and their character, not because it’s recreation or sport. This is so different than the way most people live their lives it scares them. While it doesn’t especially scare me, I’ll admit I’m not a real biker. I live my life like the 99%ers - I am willing to obey. I own a bike but I also own a house and a car. I have obligations to my children, my granddaughter and the Beautiful Michele. I have a job, an HOA and credit card debt.

I am willing to follow the rules so I can have those things. And I will never scare anyone because I am not a truly “free individual.”

2 choices It comes down to this: You can be a “Real Biker.” Live the lifestyle. Ride where you want, when you want and how you want. And don’t follow the rules. Whatever the rules are, they don’t apply to a truly free individual. Or, you can be someone who rides and helps make the rules be what you want them to be. Like rules that don’t interfere with you riding when you want, where you want and how you want. I’m not a “Real Biker” but I’m not a poser either. I ride and I wrench (I wrench a lot – I own a Shovelhead). And I’m willing, beyond the obligations to job and family and the credit card companies, to work to make sure the rules I’m going to obey are rules that benefit me. I’m going to be active in making sure the rules about riding are about riding not restrictions on riding, the rules on driving a car protect us and the rules against prejudice extend to us as well. If you’re a real biker, living the lifestyle as a free individual, this message is not for you. I really do respect and even envy you. But for the rest of you – make a choice. Let’s face it, 1%ers are 1%ers because, well, they constitute only 1 percent of us. The rest of us whether we ride or don’t ride pretty much follow the rules. I don’t care if you’re an all-for-show sleazy rider, an oldgeezer wheezy rider, a very beginner queasy rider, or a few-times-a-year-get-your-face-inthe-wind breezy rider, if you’re not a true “easy rider” then join the fight. Call or write or e-mail your legislators. Be active in a motorcycle rights organization. Get on the “Call to Action” list. Become a “Defender.” At the very least, if you’re reading this and you’re not a member of an MRO, then join one. Your twenty bucks will help fund our efforts. Where ever, when ever or how ever you ride, ride safely. Gelman Editor, Motorcycle Patriot

From the Chairman In today’s day and age it seems that we have become a society of people who focus on the mistakes of others and try to bring them to their knees for it. The ability to forgive and move on seems to be a thing of the past. By not being able to move on a district will start to suffer and plunge in to a discouraged culture, when I say that I mean, a districts leadership will no longer inspire it’s people, there will no longer be any shared values; and a lack of trust starts to build. The districts membership will now only focus on problems not opportunities, the members are no longer energized and soon the membership will lose confidence in all leaders, including those at the state level. When that happens, ultimately they will lose faith in our organization over all, and just go away, which makes for bad publicity. Its been said there is no such thing as bad publicity. Right? As long as they spell the name right, and the name is out there. As long as you're dancing in the public eye it doesn't matter whether your laces are tied, your sock has a hole or your hair looks like you combed it with a corkscrew. Any publicity is good publicity. Right? Well, no. The bottom line is bad publicity is bad for business. The best publicity we can derive is the communication of information and ideas that will develop awareness, comprehension and favor-

able attitudes of the public toward the MMA. Good Publicity can not be purchased nor can it be scheduled, but if done right publicity will start to appear in publications and on broadcast media that is only if we insure it is newsworthy and of an informative value. Our Publicity Objectives are to develop and maintain a favorable public attitude and perception of the MMA its membership and management. Only then will we increase public comprehension regarding issues and activities in the legislative and judicial branches of the government, at both State and Federal levels It is imperative that we establish our selves as the leading and most experienced motorcyclist’s rights organization around. The only way we can achieve that goal is to convince the public and the organized political society that the MMA serves our total society with a needed and valuable service. The MMA Board of Directors Sets the vision, the objectives, the strategies and priorities of our organization. The board and the MMA state officers create an environment that inspires trust, teamwork and pride in order to maintain our focus and our organizational perspective. It’s a fair assessment to say that No one plans to fail, but many fail to plan. Chaos is the result of operating without a plan. I am in no way saying our past leadership was poor and had failed to plan in fact we have had very effective leaders and there are some big shoes to fill. What I am saying is a well-executed Business Plan (because that what the MMA is, a businesses) is a road map of opportunities that leads to success. With a well-laid plan, we can increase our organizations membership and provide a clear and concise direction for our organization and it membership. Today’s preparation determines tomorrow’s success.

our organization can we survive, without new members our organization will die. With new Members we live and prosper. It’s as simple as that. In closing I look foreword to working with each and every one of you as we build on our foundation and take the MMA to the next level. Tom Corr MMA Acting State Chairman

This last month the District participated in the Motorcycle Awareness Event at the Indoor Swap Mart on May 3rd. It was really great to see all the kids and parents looking at the bikes and having a great time. It did get a little hot, however. As you know the weather has been fluctuating a lot most of this last month. It looks like it is going to be a rather hot summer.

I would like to thank Smokin’ Joe for telling us about a poker run for Sgt. Matt Slaydon. Sgt. Slaydon is a soldier who lost an arm and eye in the War on Terrorism. The poker run was on May 2nd, which happened to be the Saturday of our monthly meeting. To show our support and thanks, after the meeting some of us rode over to Youngstown to get in on the Run and party afterwards. Finally I would like to say that no matter what District you belong to we are ALL MMA. Please show your support to other Districts. Thank you to the Leather District for letting Phoenix District come to your meeting this last month. Thank you as well for the Screw Laughlin Run and for Cindy’s Benefit at the Stardust. Great turnout.

Motorcycle Folk Continue to Die on the Highways Good afternoon, everyone. Motorcycle folk continue to die on highways across the nation and in Arizona. They die due to many causes. Some die due to negligent cagers using cell phones. Some die due to ROW violations caused by hurried cagers. Some die for other reasons, such as road defects, missing manhole covers, and alcohol/substance abuse issues.

It should make us all pause for a moment, to reflect on what is really important in our world and lifestyle. I love to ride. I will go anywhere for the next meeting. Whoever wishes to volunteer to control the events posting has my vote. In the long run, we need to address the issues that affect our way of life and to stop the homicide issues on our streets and highways. That should be our goal. No disrespect meant to anyone. Let us all try to get along for the common good and address the important issues.

The State Rally is coming up and I for one am really looking forward to going. Starting on Friday May 22nd we will gather up in Overguard and the fun will begin. With bike games, vendors, music, and so much more there will be plenty to do. Bring a tent and stay the night and join in the fellowship with your brothers and sisters. Rim Country Districts next members meeting will be held on may 14th at 10:00 at SideWinders in Pine. Please come check it out and go riding with people who think just like you. See you there. 24th Annual NCOM Convention - Notes and Quotes by “CJ” Members from MMA-AZ that attended the 24th Annual (NCOM) National Coalition of Motorcyclists Convention in Reno, Nevada on May 7-10 -2009 will no doubt talk about and/or write about what they learned at this coming together of motorcyclists. Below I have put down some quotes from members of the NCOM Legislative Task Force some short notes and relevant statements. Bill Bish - “There are new bills and legislation that have negative impact upon your rights as motorcyclist and your right to ride free. Some that we do not even know of coming at us now and in our near future.” Jesse McDugald - “Bikers are freedom minded people- you can tell by the way they customize their motorcycle and by the way they dress - they don’t like to be told what to do. However if you and/or the organization that you belong to needs or wants assistance - we are here - that is what we as LTF members are here for - to help when called upon.” Bobbi Hartman - All motorcyclists need Motorcycle endorsement. When you ride a bike, no motorcycle endorsement is like having no license at all. We need to police our own - if not the government will” Sputnik - Chairman LTF - “Our liberties are up for grabs” - “There is a destruction of our Constitution” - “Focus on taking back our government” Dave Zien - Former Wisconsin Senator “Legacies we leave are the legend we live”“Stand up, Speak out and Fight back” Some suggested reasons why motorcycle fatalities are up in the recent past - Motorcycle registrations have nearly doubled - Rider inexperience - Out-riding ones abilities - Cell phone use by cagers - Motorcycles are more powerful then in the past - Alcohol use while riding - Quieter auto interiors (motorcyclist can’t be heard) - Poor road surfaces - Vehicles are now larger than in the past. Our Blood Sweet and Tears make a difference not Money Get to know your legislators now for the protection of our rights in our immediate future. We have enemies we know not of.

Joe Egg's Son Keith’s Memorial To His Dad!

have passed away during the last year. Joe Eggleston, MMA-AZ co-founder was one of those remembered. To those of us who knew Joe, the convention was very obviously missing one of our most dedicated motorcycle rights advocates and a very special friend to MMA-AZ . We all felt his absence.

Brian “Seven” Lawson, PRO, Razorz Edge Ryderz - “By attending the AIM/NCOM, it opened my eyes to many other topics that need to be discussed in the motorcycling community which includes us, the sport bikers. Regardless of the type of bike you ride, these legal and legislative issues will and are affecting all of us on two. For those of us who take our hobby seriously, it’s time to fight for your rights.”

MMA-AZ distributed several hundred 5-page memorial fliers. Many attendees from all parts of the country took them back to their home states. Keith Eggleston spoke of his dad in a beautiful dedication. Some "quotes" from his memories said it all for us: "My Dad was obsessed with defending bikers' rights and our freedom . . . He dared to be different and encouraged all to be their own person . . . His wish was to have us as bikers communicate, unite and ban together"

What is happening at the Copper Dome? Here it is June and still not a lot of action as far as bills being worked on at the Capitol. I think the theme this year is BUDGET. I want to comment this month on how proud I am to be associated with MMA and what they do to help the Motorcycle Community. First of all, May was Motorcycle Awareness month and every District was out there getting proclamations for the month. I’m not sure what the final count is on Motorcycle Safety Month Proclamation’s but I can tell you the number is high. What an accomplishment in itself. I get emails everyday about something that is possibly going on in another state as far as Motorcycle rights or safety. We have across the country so many folks involved in helping make our lives safer as we ride our motorcycle. In a lot of cases it’s a slow process but folks are involved and they really care. If you read the BYLAWS of Modified Motorcycle Association of Arizona (MMA) it says that our purpose is to establish and operate a social-educational association dedicated to Motorcycle safety. It goes into a lot more detail but the bottom line its education and motorcycle safety. What a great MRO to belong to. As in any organization, you have your ups and downs in personalities, discussions on what we’re all about and why we do what we do. Like anything, you will have different opinions and thoughts on why. The thing for us to keep in mind is that we do this together for the sole purpose of making our lives better in Motorcycle safety and education. May being Motorcycle Awareness month is a classic example of how the districts all came together for the common cause. What a great thing to see. As in a marriage or life, we do different tasks because we want to and MMA like any MRO is

made up of volunteers. So many different things are done on your own time and in some cases some huge commitments are made to get the things done for MMA. As an example, the Patriot is delivered to a lot of different places and that takes time and dedication. So many times in marriage or life we forget to say THANKS for what is being done and take it for granite that it will be done. Getting new members is an extra task that is done by so many folks and helps keep MMA alive and growing. People want to be part of something if it is fun; they have a purpose and in some cases are appreciated for what they do. Let’s continue to keep MMA alive and remember all the things that everyone does in MMA to help keep it going. At the last MMA board meeting, two individuals, Joe Hoodak and Ed “Jersey” Smith gave a presentation on membership and our web. These two individuals put in a lot of time and energy on presentations to help make MMA better from a membership quality standpoint and improving our web. All on their own time and in the long run will really help MMA and all of its members. A big THANK YOU to these guys for what they’re doing. This is just one example. Now think about your district and all the things that you’re doing to help make it better. Remember the glass is half full not half empty. Now back to the Dome. The same status on our bills as last month. Lets hope next year or later this year becomes more productive in that area. Here are some websites to look at in your free time: http://www.azleg.gov/

www.votesmart.org www.azgohs.gov www.mma-az.org Remember you belong to a great MRO and take the time to THANK the members in your District and board who are stepping up. They do a lot of extra work to help make it better. Mick Degn Designated Lobbyist Modified Motorcycle Association of Arizona Lobbyist@mma-az.org 602 312-4554 C 520 509-1358 F

Thanks for Screw Laughlin 7 Now that I have recovered from Screw Laughlin 7, I wanted to take a moment to thank everyone. First I would like to thank all the members of the MMA that attended this year, it has been a very long time since we have seen MMA support at this event. I want to thank Casa Grande District, Rim Country and Steve Briggs and Grand Canyon District for coming out and supporting the event. Special thanks to Hollywood and Vine and the Rim Country District for coming out and running the MMA booth and I believe they signed some new members. Also thanks to Hollywood for announcing the wet - t-shirt contest. We had to twist his arm but someone had to do it. I will never use the term fake or cosmetically enhanced boobs again thanks to Hollywood. They will now be referred to as 'bolt-ons'! Thanks also to Mike and Joni of the Eagle District who came to help us wherever me needed an extra hand. And the biggest thank you of all goes out to everyone in the Leather District as you worked your asses off to make this another successful event. I love you all. Snakebite

Congratulations to "Muskrat"

* In Memoriam

At the 24th Annual NCOM Convention in Reno, our own MMA-AZ Steve Musgrave was accepted on the Board of NCOM from Region 9. The NCOM Board of Directors is comprised of motorcycle group leaders from across the country and its purpose is to provide insight and direction to NCOM and its member groups. Two Directors are selected to represent each of the 9 regions in North America. Steve and "Big D" Watson (New Mexico) represent Region 9. Region 9 consists of Arizona, New Mexico, Nevada and Utah. With the contacts that are available to them throughout the nation and NCOM, they will keep us informed of what is happening in the motorcycle world and how we are affected as bikers. Steve is currently District Manager for Casa Grande, a Board Member of MMA-AZ, AIM Representative and a Member of Desert Thunder MC. Congrats Steve - we know you will do a great job for us as you always have in the past!
