Stupid Motorcycle Tricks T
If they ever do ban motorcycles, there’s one more factor they’ll have to take into account: If we’re told we can’t, we want to. I had some minor surgery a couple of weeks ago and the doctor told me specifically “no riding for at least a month”. He could have said, “You can have all the sex you want and ride as much as you want but no vacuuming or doing dishes or going to work for at least 6 weeks or maybe a year.” But what he said was “no riding for at least a month”. And as soon as he said no riding, I really, really wanted to ride.
“. . . no amount of road repair or technology is going to make us safe.”
Second - Sad but true - We would just find other ways to hurt ourselves. Let’s face it, no matter how safe they make our bikes or the roads we travel we would, by chance or by design, find a way to get injured or dead. We would still engage in stupid motorcycle tricks like riding motorcycles capable of outrageous speeds and feeling obligated to go as fast as we can. Or how about the fact that we regularly do poker runs where every stop is a bar. Here’s another really stupid motorcycle trick - Dick Davis sent me this one from the Indiana Daily Student. The headline was something like “Puppy Dies in Apartment Fire”. It turns out a man was trying to fix his motorcycle in his apartment kitchen. The guy told police he was working on his Honda Shadow 1100 in his kitchen that morning. When he took off the gas cap, gas began leaking. He told police he also had a
the other side and, you can imagine the rest. Or how about the guy from Maine who ran into a wild turkey. Actually, the wild turkey flew into him. The rider suffered a broken collarbone and the turkey died. The problem with the Swedish study is that at some point they’re going to figure out that motorcycles are just not capable of being equipped with enough safety crap to keep us from being killed. Or they’re going to find out that making the roads safe enough for a motorcycle compared to a car is just too damned expensive. Or that they can’t control wild pigs and turkeys. What happens then? My guess would be a ban on motorcycles. Honestly, I could care less if a bunch of Swedes who don’t have the balls to stand up to their govern-
The truth is no amount of road repair or technology or regulation is going to make us totally safe. What is going to make us safer is education. Rider training is something each of us can do for ourselves and for the people we introduce to riding. The other part is driver awareness. Making sure the people in those modern ultra-safe cars know they have to share the road with us. That’s something we need to keep telling our legislators about. I’ll be living vicariously through you guys for another few weeks. So enjoy the ride and stay safe. Gelman Editor, Motorcycle Patriot

First - Part of the reason that we ride is the thrill of riding. There is an inherent danger in motorcycling and we like it. I just read about a study in Japan, which concluded that, “Riding motorcycles helps keep riders young by invigorating their brains”. The study’s author, a Japanese scientist named Ryuta Kawashima, says, “The driver's brain gets activated by riding motorbikes because it requires heightened alertness.” If we wanted to just get from point A to B, we’d drive a car.
It’s human nature to want to do what we’re told not to. Not to mention, we ride because we really like riding. That means that even if motorcycling is banned, we’ll ride anyway.
Complimentary Issue
And there are the factors no one can control. I just read about a guy in California who was paralyzed because he ran into a herd of, get this, wild pigs. The pigs were crossing the road to eat the greener grass on
ment don’t get to ride anymore, except that a lot of people here in this country are finding validity in this Swedish study.

moped in his pantry with a can of gasoline next to it. As fate would have it, the furnace kicked on and ignited the gas fumes. The guy suffered only burns on his arm and singed hair, but the puppy died in the fire.

here’s this Swedish group that think they can make the roadways absolutely safe (maybe because they’ve been driving Volvos for too long). Their goal - no deaths by accident. Seriously! They’ve written a study called “Vision Zero”. They proposed changes to both vehicles and the roads we travel. Changes like different highway barriers and banking of roads or more airbags and mandatory proximity sensors that automatically brake your vehicle if you get too close to something moving slower (or not at all) than you. And it’s working for cars. The problem now is it isn’t working for motorcycles.

From the Chairman As we progress through our lives, we measure those events that have impacted us in the past, as well as those that impact us in the present and will continue to do so in the future. Little do we know when we choose a path where it will lead us or how many people will influence us on the journey along that path how (and deeply). When I first left home to explore all those things that had not previously been part of an army brat's environment, I was exposed almost simultaneously to two things that would have a major impact on my life and my understanding of those things that were truly most important. The first of these would be rodeo and the second would be motorcycling. In Texas, I would first discover the wild and wooly sport of rodeo. To me it represented man against nature in its purest form---- man against beast, with the primary rule being there were no rules, and if there were, they were heavily stacked on the side of the rodeo stock. You couldn't "fix" a rodeo, and a trophy buckle wasn't awarded to the cowboy with the deepest pockets or the most well heeled lobbyists. Your success was determined by how well you learned to ride, rope, etc., how your luck held out over the season, and also to a large degree by the support provided to you by your fellow cowboys.
If somebody had ridden a bronc you drew, they would give you as much knowledge as possible so that you might ride it also. If you were down on your luck, you didn't have to worry about having grub or a place to sleep, as cowboys always took care of their own (and still do). Nowhere else had I experienced a lifestyle where all shared the successes, as were the downs that inevitably face us all at one time or another. Cowboys are a real brotherhood (and sisterhood) where you truly learn that the most important things in life aren't things at all, but your relationship with others who share the same passions you do. It was at this same time in my life that I discovered motorcycles and those folks that were truly bikers. My first ride of the iron horse kind was a rat chopper "salvaged" out of an old Triumph T120R Bonneville. I'll never forget the hours I spent in the saddle of that old tramp. I learned many important lessons on that bike, too. Never turn too sharp a corner while riding on wet grass and wearing cut-off jeans; never underestimate the number of hours and tools necessary to keep a foreign bike functioning (particularly if you have absolutely no mechanical aptitude whatsoever); and how very, very, very important it is to have a registration that actually matches your serial numbers. More importantly, my most enriching discovery is that bikers are family just as cowboys are. It doesn't matter what your main event is, it doesn't matter what you ride, and it most certainly doesn't matter how much "bling" you have on your ride. What matters is that you RIDE. You care about those who ride with you, those who ride past you and those who rode before you and will ride after you. You care about the safety, the freedoms, the passions, and friendships that affect all of us, and you care about being able to pass those down to the generations that are to follow us. The bottom line is you care.
have decided to step down from the position of Chairman of this incredible organization. I do so with immeasurable gratitude for those that have always been at my side, including but not limited to CJ and Betty, the late Joe Eggleston, Waldo, Tom Corr, Gelman and Michele, Stony Monday, Big Bo, Teri Kelly, Priest, Becca and Hollywood, Cindy Currey, Michelle, and most importantly my number one critic and confidant, my own "Miss Meg". To the wonderful folks who have stepped forward over the last few months to take the challenging but critical roles of heading up Membership, Communications, and Lobbyist, I cannot say thank you more sincerely or gratefully. Caring as much as I always have about the MMA of AZ, it is of the utmost importance that I know I can step aside and turn the reins over to capable people who have nothing but the best interests of the MMA of AZ at heart and who will lead it in the future to even greater heights than it has reached in the past. I can full-heartedly say that I have nothing but faith, honor, and respect (thanks, Bo, for the words) for the new days ahead under the guidance of Tom Corr. He will be a leader we may always count on for the right guidance in our future. It is with great honor and humility that I now take on the role of "immediate past Chairman" of the greatest motorcycle rights organization in Arizona. Thanks for all you have given to me. Colin C. District Reports Casa Grande District We are planning to have the motorcycle awareness booth for the month of May at one of the City of Casa Grande parks during the Cinco de Mayo celebration. We would like volunteers to attend and help out for an hour. This is the perfect opportunity to include the entire family. You can donate an hour to help spread positive information, have fun, and enjoy great food! Meetings are held on the first Sunday of every month at 11:00 a.m. at the Silver Bullet Bar, (520) 836-1363, located at 1401 N. Pinal Avenue in Casa Grande. For more information about the Casa Grande District, contact Steve Musgrave at (520) 426-0069 or Tom Corr at (520) 252-9675. Mike Messer Cochise District Don't forget the Cochise District Membership Drive on Sunday, 17 May at The Veteran's Memorial Park in Sierra Vista. Should start by 10:00 a.m. That's it, Animal Cochise Dist. Mgr. MMA of AZ Grand Canyon District The District wishes all of our fellow freedom fighters great riding weather for the month of April. The Cabin Fever Crew has already taken our bikes out of their winter hibernation and, after servicing them, started riding. We love the weather that we have been blessed with, as it is not nearly as cold as before. Our monthly meeting began at 10:00am at Hog's Restaurant on Sunday, April 5. We had three folks who were interested in joining MMA attend the meeting. The district extends a grand welcome to Bruce Johnson (a former MMA member), Judy Green and Dennis Harrison. Our glorious leader, Chris Kite, was absent due to work so the meeting was headed by our Assistant District Manager, Carl Smith. After the Secretary, Treasurer, Activities Director and Road Captain reports, we discussed both old and new business. We were reminded that next Saturday, April 11, the MMA Board of Directors would be meeting at Rimrock. All members were invited to attend. I informed the membership that, as requested by the majority of the district members, I would address both Right of Way (ROW) and cell phone usage while operating a motor vehicle issues with the Board. It was mentioned during the Treasurer's report that the district made approximately $163 at the last bike night (thanks to the ongoing efforts
of both Chris Kite and Bam Bam Clifton). We would again like to take this opportunity to welcome all riders to our monthly bike nights. They take place on the third Tuesday of each month, at 6 p.m., at Hog's Saloon. Hog's is a business member who serves great drinks and has a great eatery right next to the saloon. Chris and Bam Bam are always working with local businesses to obtain items to raffle, and in many cases give away, to those who attend bike night. So if you're in the area, stop by and enjoy yourselves at bike night. Call Chris at 928-853-1211 for more information. Chris, Bam Bam, Joan and I enjoyed ourselves at Western Trails Ranch last weekend for the Old School Biker Bash. We really wish to thank the Ironhorse District, along with the Dinosaur Riders, for their hard work in making us all feel welcome and for the many great activities that they had for all the riders. I had a grand time eating the great chili at the chili contest, and the bands played great music for most of the afternoon and evening. John Kraske, our Road Captain, reminded everyone about the upcoming events. Included in his talks were Screw Laughlin, the Jester Memorial Run and the Flagstaff Chapter of ABATE run calendar. All members seemed interested in attending Screw Laughlin and the Jester Memorial Run. We look forward to being with our brother and sister MMA members at both events. John also notified the membership that the American Legion Riders of Post # 3 (Flagstaff) is sponsoring the "Wall that Heals" in Flagstaff from July 10-12 here in Flagstaff. We invite all persons, riders or not, to attend. The Wall is a miniature replica of the Wall in Washington D.C. and we would love to have you attend. If you need further information, contact me, Steve, at 928-527-3151. All other districts, please notify your membership that the wall is coming to Flagstaff. We would love to have you here. Ralph also wishes to remind all MMA members of our first event, Father's Day Delight. The event begins June 19 and runs until June 21. Free camping will be available at 2Bar3 Historic Restaurant and Saloon (another great business member) with your paid attendance. We need all of your support to make sure that this event is a success. Contact me at 928-527-3151 or Chris at 928-853-1211 for more information. I will be handing out fliers at the BOD meeting on April 11 so that all district BOD members can take them to their districts to pass them along. We hope to see you all out there and we will do our best to insure that you have a great time. Members agreed to table until the next meeting the ideas for T-Shirts and a district run calendar. We hope to start having fun rides after each meeting (at least until the snow returns to the Alpine area where we survive each winter).
I also reminded the membership that we must begin considering how to fund our NCOM meeting account. The membership supports the idea of sending at least one member each year to the annual NCOM meetings. We hope to begin doing so in 2010. Bruce Johnson stated that he has attended some past NCOM meetings and that they are very helpful in expressing the issues motorcyclists face and that the workshops are excellent. Again, we look forward to meeting our fellow freedom fighters at Screw Laughlin. Until next month, the district wishes each of you a safe and happy riding month! With this good weather comes a lot of traffic. Everyone please be careful out there. On April 4-5, we held our members appreciation party. We had a great turn out and many people camped out for the night. There were raffles, a pool tournament, a trampoline (thanks for the safety net), and horseshoes. Everyone had a total blast including me. The State Rally is coming up and I for one am really looking forward to going. Starting Friday, May 22, we will gather in Overgaard and the fun will begin. With bike games, vendors, music, and so much more, there will be plenty to do. Bring a tent and stay the night. Join in the fellowship with your brothers and sisters. Rim Country District’s April members’ meeting will be moved (because of Easter) to April 19th. The meeting will be at the American Legion in Payson at 10:00am. In May our meeting will moved (because of Mothers Day) to May 17th. The meeting will be at the Sidewinders in Pine at 10:00am. Be safe Mike Shearhart MMA/SRD/DM. Tucson District No District Report this month Verde Valley District Fellow Freedom Fighters, The weather is getting great to say the least... As we all start to hit the roads more frequently in the nice weather it is time to get the word out to the general public in force to "LOOK OUT FOR MOTORCYCLES" one great way to do that is buy attending and or assisting in one of the many statewide May Motorcycle Awareness month events and or Booths.. Another great way to get the word out is by picking up OLD PATRIOTS when you drop the new ones off, take those old patriots over to a local coffee shop, barber shop, beauty salon, ETC. and leave them there, by doing this we are; A. recycling our own new paper, B. spreading the MMA word and agenda at no additional cost to the organization, C. reaching out to members of the general public that may otherwise never hear of the MMA or our efforts.. Additionally when they leave after reading the Patriot you can bet that they will notice a few more motorcycles and perhaps spread the word to a friend to LOOK OUT FOR MOTORCYCLES!
The Sweet Hearts run was a huge success and we would like to thank all the attended and all that donated items and cash for medical and living expenses of Cathy "CAT" Smith. We raised over $4000 to help Cat with all her needs. Cat is doing great and recovering well at this time, however it looks like she still will not be able to return to work for quite some time so everyone is still welcome to donate to Cats benefit fund... See or contact Sponge Bob Gates for that info... Coming up real quick is that 14th annual Jester Memorial Run for all lost brothers and sisters over the past year... The event will be held on Saturday May 30 in the Verde Valley, Please see the flyer in this edition of the Patriot for more info... Also if you have a name and information of a lost brother or sister in the last year that you would like to see honored at the Jester Memorial Run please contact Big-Bo with all their information and it will surely be added to the memorial. Wetsiders District March was a very busy and exciting month for the WestSiders. Since we have several new officers from our February elections, we held both Executive Officer and Officer Meetings. We are trying to keep the WestSiders moving forward in a positive direction. This can be a challenge with new officers trying to come together as a team. However, we know that we have a great team and are making positive progress. I am looking forward to working with each and every one of them. We are also looking forward to working with the largest part of our team - the membership. After all, it is all about the membership, it's your district. The March Dice Run - our fundraiser to send two members to the National Coalition of Motorcyclist (NCOM) convention in Reno was very successful. It was a great day for riding and we had a great turn out. At the last stop, we setup an MMA WestSiders booth to provide MMA information and sign up new members. To all that participated, thank you. A big round of thanks to everyone who worked the ride as well as setting it up. It could not have happened without ALL of you. We would also like to welcome all of our new members. Many members from the WestSiders have been out and about in support of other district events. We look forward to the future support of each district as we can all succeed and provide a united front in our efforts for bikers’ rights. “The secret of happiness is freedom. What is happening at the Copper Dome? Ok, so what do we write about when there is nothing going on at the Dome but Budget? The House has some committees meeting but the Senate has said no committees until they have a budget. Therefore, it’s not looking good for bills this year or at least not right now. What does that mean? Well, we can prepare to go into action when the committees get back to work. Here are the current bills and their status: HB2133 - Our first bill to be assigned to a committee was the Motorcycle Safety Fund and Arizona Motorcycle Safety Advisory Council (AMSAC) Sunset Extension. It was chaired and sponsored by Representative Jerry Weiers. The fund and the Council were due to expire, or sunset, in June of 2010. The reason this did not go before a "Sunset” Committee for extension is that the fund and the council are considered a program and not a state agency. As a Sunset can only be extended for a maximum of 6 years, this bill will extend the Safety Fund and Council to 2016. A lot of work was done by the Lobbyist team in preparation for the committee meeting. HB2133 passed with an 8-0 vote. This was great news and a wonderful way to start the year. I want to thank all of you for your involvement, calls, and emails on this bill. Your help got this one through the committee. It now needs to go to the Senate before final approval. SB1060 – this is a Right-of-Way (ROW) bill, which asks for additional types of violations and increase of penalties. The current ROW statute ARS.28-672 covers left turns and running red lights only. We are asking that the following be added – pulling out from intersections, merging, and moving from your lane unsafely. Penalties in the statute state that the court ‘may’ suspend a license for 90 to 180 days in the event that a ROW violation causes 'serious physical injury or death'. We are asking that in the event of second or subsequent violations within a 36-month period the court 'shall' suspend a license. State law also currently states that for drivers causing any of the above ROW violations listed, if driving on a Suspended or Revoked License, penalties automatically escalate to a Class 5 Felony for SPI and Class 4 Felony for Death. We are asking for the addition of a classification for drivers who do not have a Valid Driver License and a Proper Endorsement to this section. We continue to work closely with Senator Linda Gray on this bill.
hearing date, you can ask for an extension to allow more time to get your endorsement. One of the ways that we can insure that our voices are heard on these bills is the program we originally referred to as Legislative Specialists – now called “The Defenders Program”. I’m sorry to say that we only have three folks within MMA that have signed up. We need additional volunteers to participate. Clubs and organizations throughout the country are getting behind their lobby teams to support their states through this top-notch program. We need your help. Why? Because even more powerful than the voice of your lobbyist amongst the state legislators, is the voice of their constituents. You! club/charter or organization Your district/chapter can help by providing at least one, if not more, member to become a Defender. We will need that person’s name, phone, zip code, address, legislative district, org/club, and email. This information should be sent to caoreilly48@aol.com . Between the MMA, ABATE and ACMC we will pull all the defender’s together on a master list. As a Defender, you will be notified with explicit instructions and given all the information
necessary to do what we are asking of you whenever your lobbyists need things done or have a Call to Action. Please – we can’t do this alone! Your voice is a very powerful tool to the legislators that you put in office. Put simply, grassroots means you, me and every other citizen biker combining our strengths, our courage and our collective experiences and putting forth a unified voice. Together, we cannot fail - not in this country. Some of us have fought in wars to protect our American way of life. We will continue to fight with our brothers and sisters and will never let our voices go silently into the night. If you know someone who doesn’t belong to the MMA or another MRO, get them involved and signed up. If you do not know who your legislators are, find out and get involved. You really can help make a difference. We need this now probably more than any time in our history. We can also help educate riders regarding motorcycle awareness and safety. Ride safe, take a motorcycle-training course, have fun and get involved. You’ll make some friends and who knows, they might be lifelong friends. users to be more aware of motorcycles and motorcyclists' safety. This is in addition to encouraging all riders to receive appropriate training and practice safe riding skills.
The United States House of Representatives' Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure passed H. Res. 269, a bill entitled "Supporting the goals of a motorcycle safety month." The bill is sponsored by Gabrielle Giffords (D-AZ) who is both co-chair of the US House Motorcycle Safety Caucus and an avid rider. Rep. Giffords is joined by her fellow co-chair of the Motorcycle Safety Caucus, Michael Burgess (R-TX), as an original co-sponsor.
The bill was passed unanimously by the committee with many positive statements from committee members. Transportation and Infrastructure Chairman James Oberstar (D-MN) cited many positive aspects of motorcycling and was complementary to his constituents who have been in touch with him concerning motorcycle awareness programs.
The bill puts the Congress on record as recognizing the contribution motorcycles make to the transportation mix. It encourages all road
The Motorcycle Riders Foundation encourages its members to contact their individual member of congress to sign on as cosponsors of this legislation.
The next bill that we’ve been following and working with DPS on is SB1137. The important thing on this bill that we want to get across to everyone is to make sure you have your Motorcycle Endorsement. This is a critical piece for this bill. SB1137 - Vehicle Impound - Lacking Proper Endorsement. This is the DPS Towing bill that was recently announced. Currently, it is law that when a person is found to be driving or riding on a suspended or revoked license, their vehicle is towed and kept for 30 days or until the owner comes to the impound yard with proof of their license being reinstated and proof of ownership via registration, title, insurance, etc. This bill will revise the statute to include the towing of anyone driving or riding a vehicle without the proper endorsement (i.e. Motorcycle, Semi Truck). According to DPS and the statute, you will be given a hearing date when ticketed and towed. If you get your endorsement prior to your hearing date, you will be given the proper paperwork to get your motorcycle released to you immediately. If you cannot get your endorsement prior to your
Kevin Hanna, Board Member of the MMA of AZ “Ironhorse” District, contacted Councilman Aames and Mayor Barrett of the City of Peoria last month and asked them to Proclaim the Month of May “Motorcycle Safety and Awareness Month” in Peoria. This was asked to be done in conjunction with the Proclamation from the State of Arizona signed by Janet Napolitano last year proclaiming May “Motorcycle Safety and Awareness Month”. The City of Peoria responded quickly and had the Proclamation ready for us at their meeting on April 7, 2009. Kevin, along with all of us from the Modified Motorcycle Association, would like to Thank Mayor Barrett, Councilman Aames and Stephanie Whyte for their support. We hope we can encourage more cities in Arizona to support this as well.

Become a Defender Now is the time to take a stand. Together we can fight for what we believe in. Mick our new Lobbyist together with the lobbyists from ABATE and the ACMC are putting together a group called The Defenders. This group is for those who are ready to take a stand. I am already a member and if you are ready to take action, you should be a member too. Defenders are basically the “Minutemen” of the Biker Revolution. A Defender is someone who is willing to respond at a moment’s notice with phone calls and e-mails. As a defender, you are the spearhead on the front lines of the fight for our freedoms. I for one am no longer afraid to stand by my brothers and sisters and yell at the top of my lungs “I’m mad as hell and I’m not going to take it any more”. Are you ready to stand with us? To become a defender all you have to do is send your name, number, address, and e-mail address to Mick at lobbyist@mma-az.org and you’re a defender. Do not take this group lightly because it is for people who are ready and willing to take action. Fear No Freedoms SPINNER
