The Arizona Motorcycle Safety Advisory Council (AMSAC), since itʼs inception in 2000, has become increasingly active in projects to raise awareness of both drivers and motorcyclists regarding issues affecting motorcycle safety. One dollar ($1.00) of each motorcycle registration goes into the State Motorcycle Safety Fund. It is the privilege and responsibility of the Arizona Motorcycle Safety Advisory Council to advise the Governorʼs Office of Highway Safety on how to best expend the
Mick Degn
monies to benefit all the motorcycle riders in the state, by furthering educational efforts and raising awareness about the increasing numbers of motorcycles on the road. When the Council was formed in 2000, there were approximately 80,000 registered motorcycles in Arizona. Today, that number has increased to approximately 150,000.
The following are projects that AMSAC has been involved in: • Billboard campaign • State and County Fair to promote Awareness • Motorcycle Safety Awareness month and fairs • Radio PSAʼS • Funding of Motorcycle Manuals • Motorcycle awareness and safety at High Schools
The important things for the council is to make sure that Motorcycle Awareness and Safety is out there and that they work within in a budget and spend the money wisely. This should be done by identifying dollars to spend, prioritization and making the right decisions for the Motorcycle community.
Anyone is welcome to attend the council meetings at any time. Please check GOHS website for times and dates. Mick Degn MMA Lobbyist Lobbyist@mma-az.org

We want to continue to keep everyone updated on the status of the elimination of Emission testing on Motorcycles in Maricopa County. This year we had the date changed so that it gave EPA more time to do their study and the Governor approved the date.
We do not have a completion date at this time but feel comfortable that all parties are working together to get this done as quickly as possible. We will continue to do followups and pass information on as we get it. Lobbyist for MMA, ABATE and ACMC

What is the MMA
We are an association that lobbies and educates the government and the general public to promote motorcycling in a safe and positive image. When you become a member of the MMA of Arizona, you make a difference in the ongoing mission to protect your right to ride and enjoy the motorcycle of your choice, your choice of riding apparel, and when and where you can ride a motorcycle. These issues are real and present in todayʼs “protect yourself from yourself” political environment. This holds true for all levels of government. At the state level we have a lobbyist who regularly visits our state capital to lobby our legislators on the issues concerning the motorcyclists in Arizona. On the national level we are aligned with the National Coalition of Motorcyclists (NCOM), and several other motorcycle rights organizations.
✁
MMA is a Motorcyclists Rights Organization (MRO) comprised of motorcyclists and motorcycle enthusiasts who are concerned with the future, safety, and welfare of motorcycling. We are a non-profit, educational organization dedicated to improving the social atmosphere that surrounds motorcyclists, and protecting the individual freedoms of citizens.

From Our Chairman Chairmanʼs comments relative to motorcycle rights and the MMA of Arizona.
Beloved Brother Dick “Turtle” Davis Passes A golden heart has stopped beating and hardworking hands are now at rest.
We are deeply saddened by the loss of Dick Davis.
Tom Corr MMA of AZ Chairman Casa Grande District
Well the patriot is back in print after a month off - as you can see it has a new look. In our last board meeting we discussed becoming a 501 (c) 3 in addition to retaining our (c) 4 statues also. We are moving forward in the exploration of that venture; here is a short run down of a 501(c)(3) and 501(c) (4) organizations. It is very easy to confuse the two classifications as both are considered nonprofit's and there are many similar characteristics. However, there are crucial differences between these two types of nonprofit organizations and it is important to understand those distinctions.
Both organizations are very similar in many respects. In fact, any organization that qualifies for a 501(c) 3 tax-exemption also qualifies for a 501(c) 4. Both 501(c)(3) s and 501(c)(4) s must be run as not for profits. Neither 501(c)(3) s nor 501(c)(4) earnings may benefit a private shareholder or individual. Both c-3 and c-4 organizations are exempt from paying federal income tax. State tax-exemption status varies by state. Lobbying (trying to affect legislation): 501(c) 3ʼs are limited in the amount of time and/or money they can put into lobbying. 501(c) 4ʼs can do an unlimited amount of lobbying.
Political campaign activity: 501(c) 3ʼs cannot in any way support or oppose anyone running for public office, though they may be involved in political campaigns by way of non-partisan public forums, voter registration drives, etc. 501(c) 4ʼs can engage in political campaign activity, so long as this is consistent with the organizationʼs purpose and is not the organizationʼs primary activity. Charitable Donations:
Donations to 501(c) 3ʼs are deductible to the full extent of the law. Donations to 501(c) 4ʼs that are public entities (i.e., state, local governments, volunteer fire stations) are deductible if they are used for public services. Donations to other 501(c) 4ʼs such as the MMA are not deductible. By becoming a 501(c) 3 people will benefit from donating to our organization and since our organization does substantial lobbying and or campaigning, we should stay a 501(c) 4. We will be getting the best of both worlds; we will have two separate but affiliated organizations – one a charitable 501(c)(3) and the other a 501(c)(4). We will still lobby extensively on behalf of our members, but have an affiliated 501(c) 3 foundation for charitable giving. Tom Corr
MMA State Chairman

His passing will not only leave a void in our lives, but in the hearts of all those who knew him. Cherish the memories of the time spent with him. Rest in Peace "Turtle" you will be missed.— Tom Corr
We have lost a dear friend and respected brother. Richard L. Davis,“Turtle” as most knew him, passed away Wednesday, August 18th from a heart attack, he was 69 years old. As many of you know, he had been ill for some time now. Turtle was a modest, private man. Turtle had been an active member of MMA since 2001; He was a Life member and was also a board member for the Leather District. The following are words from his friends.
We are truly saddened by the loss of this great man. There was never a time when he refused to do anything asked of him and with no requests ever for repayment of any kind - even thanks. He will be missed more that we realize. He was our Motorcycle news informant and our MMA do everything guy. We will miss the long and informative and sometimes downright zealous conversations with him. Trike away Dick - we were blessed with your friendship.—CJ and Betty
Dick will surely be missed. He was at all of the meetings and I will miss his thoughts and emails. He was truly someone that was there for MMA. He will be watching above us as we ride and as the politics continue at the Capitol.— Mick Degn
I cannot express the grief I feel, with the loss of Dick Davis. His contribution to motorcycle rights and his willingness to make things happen and always be there for all of us whenever we needed him, even these last years when he was sick himself, was who he was. He will be missed.—Bobbi Turtle was a good man and never said "No".
What a laugh he had, I will miss his wisdom and smile. Cannot think of a better Angel to have watching over us as we ride. In Loving Memory.—Sparky
I am sadden by this news. My heartfelt condolences go out to Turtle's family, Friends and to MMA & ABATE.
Turtle was a good man that always gave of himself. He was always ready to help. Turtle was a great presence at TBFS over the years and he will be missed. My thoughts and prayers go out to his friends and family.—Margie F What a guy! What a loss! I can't remember a time, when Dick said no. I'll miss the man, the friend; all the info he sent, to keep us all informed; and working with him on the MMA Cell Phone Campaign. There is a void now to so many of us.
Dick, you can rest now, my friend. Be healed, and ride to your hearts content, with all of those who have gone before us. My thoughts and prayers, are going up, for his friends, and family.—teRi Kelley Ahhh whathe... Gosh I'm shocked. My highest of high prayers, Love, and pure light go out to the family and friends. Love filled man fighting for the freedom of biker rights. BLESS HIM.— Mooneyes
Our heartfelt condolences to ALL in the motorcycle community. Turtle had passion, integrity, loyalty, honesty, perseverance, commitment, respect for all, and an undying conviction to help in any capacity needed without wanting or needing any glory. For the past 5 years, I have been in AZ and a member of MMA, Turtle has always been supportive and accepting of me and our Club. Paulr always had the utmost respect for Turtle and now they are riding free along the skies keeping watch over ALL of us. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends of Turtle who are all mourning a great loss. RIP Turtle. We Love You!—L&R Medieval Maidens MC
It saddens me that Turtle has passed, I will remember him with great fondness. He was such a giving man with unique character. One of my favorite “Turtleisms”... "Coming together is a beginning; Keeping together is progress; Working together is success."
That is one “Turtleism” I always remembered, it was so true to how he felt about the MMA and his fellow brothers and sisters.—Joe Hoodak
On Wednesday, July 21, 2010 Gary Emberlin ended his life.
He was one of my best friends, joined the MMA just because I was a member. All we know is that he hid his loneliness from his family and friends.
Now that I'm looking back I wish I had told him just how much he meant to me as a friend and that I loved him as a brother.
Maybe if he heard that more often from me and everyone close to him he would never have picked up the gun.
I won't make this mistake again and want all of you to know...new friends and old that I love you all as brothers and sisters and my life has more meaning and is far better and richer because you're all a part of it. Ron “Capt. Ron” Hudson Board Member - High Country District

3rd Annual Brotherly Love-In Presented by the MMA Leather District
Hard to believe itʼs been 3 years since we started this event. We started this event as a night to get to know your brothers and sisters. Your mission was to just learn one thing new that you didnʼt know before and too make a few new friends. We had been to so many memorials and so many people would say ʻwow I didnʼt know they did thatʼ, ʻI didnʼt know they had 3 kids?ʼ just so many things. So the Leather District started this event for some casual camaraderie and some fun. We decided me might as well except dog and cat food donations, charge $5 and help out some needy local animal shelter because we all love are 4 legged buddies.
This yearʼs event was held at Maxʼs Sports bar and the staff and manager seemed very happy to have us there and welcomed us back for any other event. Our attendance was down by half as with almost every event here in the valley, but we were grateful to those who came and supported us. As you would expect, we had a great showing from the Leather District and an impressive amount from the Eagle District. We even had a few familiar faces from Ironhorse and SRD, it was great to see you all. We would like to thank the Limey Riders MC and the Medieval Maidens MC for their on going support.
Our night was filled with laughs, 60ʼs music, tiedye, hula-hoops and paddleball. There were some great tie-dye creations this year. Eagle District –Molly and her family won best tie-dye. The menʼs hula-hoop competition had people rolling on the floor laughing, we thank them for the entertainment. The ladies hula-hoop competition…well lets just say all the men at the event said ʻTHANK YOU!ʼ. We have some great pictures to share, hope you can put us on your calendar for next year.

A hot and humid July come to a close with a roar. First our local Road Captain and Sgt at Arms, John “Saltt” Salter was voted in with two others as a State Sgt at Arms. We couldnʼt be prouder of him. Later in the month about a dozen of our members rode down to Mormon Lake for “Too Broke for Sturgis”. Everyone that rode had a blast and came back rubbing it in our faces for not making it. Thanks to ABATE and the folks who worked so hard for this fantastic event. In other news, one of our local rider groups, The Pale Horsemen, held a fundraiser to benefit battered women and children. They sold hot dogs and snacks and did a wonderful thing for a great cause. We thank them for their contributions to the community. As summer draws to a close and school starts up, we say farewell to the tourists and begin our final push for our annual Toys-for-Tots charity drive, with several fundraisers in the works. Details to follow.

Finally, a reminder that we have moved our monthly meetings to the second Saturday of the month, 9am at the Glen Canyon Steakhouse. If youʼre up our way, feel free to drop in. Until then, ride safe. Dave Weaver-Communications Officer, Northern District
Coyote Alley Sports Bay Review by Bob Cunningham
Coyote Alley Sports Bar may be one of the best-kept secrets in the northwest valley. Tucked away just a half block north of Bell road on Eastham (between the 303 and Cotton Lane), MMA member Steve Ehman's spacious and very cool sports bar is my pick for a great time. The actual address is 16840 W Bell Rd # 100, around the corner from Albertsons Shopping. Large screen televisions and LCD video screens surround the entire bar. You can watch so many sporting events at once you

Anyone who drinks enough to think they can sing has the opportunity several nights a week with karaoke. A DJ handles it the rest of the time playing rock AND roll. I made that up. He plays whatever you want. Ice cold beer and great food like STEAKBURGER BASKETS, PIZZA, POPPERS, CHEESE CRISPS and FRIES are available daily. Plus White Eagle Famous Deli is right around the corner and will deliver in about ten minutes. There's a convenient smoking patio right outside the front door and plenty of parking front and rear. Daily drink specials and poker nights made Coyote Alley one place I actually tried to move in to. Steve said no, but they are open from 11am to 2am seven days a week. Elections are coming up... By Mick Degn
I was looking at some statistics on our lawmakers this year and as you look at who in your District is running this year, think about some of these stats.
We had politicians who had days in attendance as a % all over the board. Some had days in attendance for votes from 100% to as low as 76% in the House. We had politicians who had days in attendance as % all over the board in the Senate. Some had days in attendance for votes from 100% to as low as 61%. 10 Senators, 15 House members log perfect attendance on floor votes.
Most successful Senator in having bills signed was Senator John Nelson in District 12 who had 19 of 33 bills signed. There were 13 out of 30 Senators who had 0% batting average on bills signed. There were 21 out of 60 House of Representatives who had 0% batting average on bills signed.
In 2010 there were 352 bills passed, 13 failed House and 8 that failed in the Senate. Half of the Senate wonʼt be coming back to the 30-person chamber in 2011. A majority of them face term limits and therefore cannot seek re-election. More than one-third of the 60 Arizona House members will be leaving the chamber after this year as 13 lawmakers are term limited and another 11 have decided to step down from politics or run for another statewide office. Only 6 state representatives have made it clear that they will not return to the Capitol next year.
Take the time to understand your candidates and what they bring to the table. What are their views? What did they do last year in the House or Senate? How do they feel about Motorcycle Riders? As I was going door to door to help get signatures to get some of our Legislative folks on the ballot, I heard a lot of folks say they wanted a lot of folks out and it didnʼt make a difference if they were Republican or Democrat. You hear that a lot and you hope people donʼt just try to get everyone out and forget about the ones that have a good track record. Educate yourself on who is running, register if youʼre not and vote. Like in anything, some take their position seriously and work for the people who had voted them in. Some forget real quick who voted them in. Itʼs easy to think the problem will solve itself and maybe we all have over the years taken that stance to some extent. We now have some very serious problems in our state and country from financial to you name it. We see a lot of finger pointing. Letʼs be part of the solution and not a part of the problem. Get involved in however you feel comfortable but get involved. www.votesmart.org

About this issue...
Beginning with this issue, the Motorcycle Patriot will be produced every other month. One of the reasons behind this change is to provide our contributors with ample time to submit useful and informative articles and content. Another reason is to reduce our publishing and distribution costs. Thank you to those who have provided your support and contributions thus far. This is a work in progress so comments and suggestions are always welcome.
Speaking of support, this is our newsletter so lets hear from our membership. Do you have a story to share about a ride or event - we may be interested in publishing it. Be sure to include any relative photos. How about a review of a business member? Business members, we need your support too. As you can see in this issue we will randomly select from our business members and create a basic ad. Better yet let us create a feature ad. Check out our rates on page 15.
To those who submit, please send your text in either a Microsoft Word Document or text file format. E-mail will work too. Images and artwork should be attached as jpg, tif, or pdf in 150-300dpi resolutions. If someone other than you wrote the article, please include the source. As stated on page 2, all materials for consideration in the next issue must be received by October 10th. Any materials received after the deadline will be considered for a future issue. Motorcycle Patriot is produced solely from freelance and authorized material. All material is compiled from sources believed to be reliable but published without responsibility for errors or omissions. Opinions expressed by authors are not necessarily those of the publisher.
As your new Editor, I look forward to helping our association produce a useful and informative newsletter. With our members support Iʼm confident we can reach that goal. Thank you for your support. Joseph “Inspector Gadget” Hoodak 602.625.9777 • editor@mma-az.org

Flag Run
An organization called The Nation of Patriots (www.nationofpatriots.org) has planned a nationwide event called The Patriot Tour, the purpose of which is to honor all service men and women, all veterans and their families and all who have fallen in the line of duty. This nationally unified tribute will begin on Friday, May, 28 at 10 a.m. at Wisconsin Harley-Davidson in Oconomowoc, Wisconsin and involves the passing of one American flag through 48 states (some 12,500 miles), over 100 days (essentially Memorial Day to Labor Day), from city to city using Harley dealerships as the connecting points. The flag will be transported by more than 150,000 members of Harley Owners Group (HOG) chapters across the country, raising money at dealership events and celebrations along the way as well as on the Nation of Patriots web site.
Davidson and Bill Sherer who founded The Nation of Patriots organization and has led the effort to make this nationwide event a reality.
The flag will eventually make its way to Madison, Wisconsin on the Thursday before Labor Day weekend (Sept. 2) where it will remain until that Saturday (Sept. 4) when it will make its final trip back to Wisconsin Harley Davidson in Oconomowoc for closing ceremonies before being carried to Milwaukee where a large Harley-Davidson rally will be unfolding. The last ride, from Madison to Oconomowoc will again include police and military escorts. The money raised throughout the tour will be donated to families of wounded veterans across the country.
A flag christening and ride launch ceremony will take place beginning at 9 a.m. at Wisconsin Harley-Davidson on Friday, May 28. Expected speakers include Wisconsin Governor Jim Doyle, military leaders, officials from Wisconsin Harley-

We were informed of this special honor by Victor Borelli III, better known as “Springer” to the rest of us. He is a Member of the American Legion Post in Prescott, AZ as well as a Member of the M.M.A. High Country District. He is our road Captain, and a Veteran. He is a dedicated man, not only to our Nation but to his family and his fellow Veterans. His first priority is to the Legion and we at the High Country District respect this and welcome Victor every meeting he gets to attend with us. We appreciate his involvement and knowledge he brings to us as an M.M.A. organization dedicated to the rights of bikers everywhere as it pertains to each of us who love to ride. I personally would like to say Thank you to Victor and his wife Kathy who extended the invitation to ride, and took pictures all along the way during this run. They bought a separate set of photos for us to share with the rest of our Brothers and Sisters who didnʼt get the chance to know about this ride, and wish we could have spread the news a little better for extra support during this time of what seems to be a slow erosion of our unity as a Nation under God.
As parents of a recent recruit of the Army, we wanted to show our support to our Son who has so graciously stepped up to the plate to lay his life on the line for our Nation upholding the idea of a free Nation, and to continue to show Honor and respect for those who have already served and Died for the very same ideals our Son carries in his heart.
More simply, it's 100 stops in 100 days, 100 flag bearers, 48 states, 12,500 miles, 150,000 riders (and growing) in one summer, raising funds and honoring many. The first leg of the ride is from Wisconsin Harley-Davidson in Oconomowoc, to a dealership in Chicago. The flag will be carried by members of Wisconsin's Rock River HOG chapter, with police and military escorts. It is expected that the number of Harley riders who will escort the flag from Oconomowoc to Chicago could be in the thousands. The flag will spend the night in Chicago and leave the next morning, again carried by members of a HOG chapter, to Indianapolis, then to a city in Michigan, and on to city after city across the country. There is a wonderful map pinpointing the participating HOG chapters and cities through which the flag will travel, at www.nationofpatriots.org.
On Saturday July 24, 2010 we attended a run with members of the American Legion. We joined an escort of Members from the H.O.G. Chapter out of Belmont Flagstaff to bring our Flag across this Nation. Flown to Wisconsin by our very own Blue Angels where it was picked up by H.O.G. Chapter Members there and now being passed along to other Chapters till it reaches its destination.
The back story to how this event came to be is almost as remarkable as the event itself, and begins with Bill Sherer (age 29) of Milwaukee, Wisconsin who rode through every state east of the Mississippi during the summer of 2009 on his own HarleyDavidson motorcycle and at his own expense, carrying the flag and raising money for the families of wounded veterans. He ended the tour in Milwaukee and worked with the VA Hospital there to direct the money he had raised to military families. He called it the Patriot Tour and as he tells it, the idea for the Nation of Patriots 2010 tour came to him during the inaugural trip: "I was on the first Patriot Tour, all alone on my bike somewhere in New York state when I realized that my voice was not strong enough to reach coast to coast or all the way to our men and women overseas. This is why I am undertaking this effort. I wish to include as many proud American voices as I can possibly drum up to stand with me in a unified and collective salute of appreciation to the U.S. Military. They need it and our country needs to witness this surge of American pride especially in these uncertain times."
September/October 2010
For us, this ride was more than a” spectacular event”, it carried with it Love and unity of all our Organizations devoted to our Veterans, and a time to share with people who accepted us without any knowledge of us what so ever, a unification of citizens as a Nation who still believe in God and who follow the leadings of their heart. I LOVED that about them.
After our entry into Kingman, flag unfurled, there was a flag passing ceremony that took place at the Harley Dealership on to the next H.O.G. Chapter as they continued the journey to Las Vegas and all points beyond. We that rode wrote our names in a book being passed as a small token of our part to meet up with the bigger picture, a book of names compiled to show our love and support for this Nation and a continuing show of support for those who
will engage after us. A small piece of history that makes up who we are: One Nation under God indivisible with Liberty and Justice for all.
As members of the stateʼs largest motorcycle rights organization, we feel it is important to try to get out and spread the word to the portion of the community that is just getting involved with riding in our state, get them informed and involved with maintaining our freedoms as bikers, this is important for the M.M.A. however I also wonder if it wouldnʼt be just as important to get out and spend time with our brothers and sisters from other districts, but also get out and ride with other districts and organizations to strengthen our bonds with others who are like minded.
Our Pets
Here is a new column for all you bikers out there who love and care about your 4 legged fury family member. In each issue, there will be information to help keep our pets safe and happy.
GARDEN TOXINS - Lovely as they are, some plants are poisonous to pets if ingested.
Many plants cause toxicity in animals, but these are some of the most common – and some can even be deadly. Ingesting just a few petals, leaves, seeds or plants of the bulb can be fatal to pets. Be a garden guardian and keep these plants out of your home and yard. Autumn Crocus

We discussed the possibility of it being a good idea to get out and visit other districts at their meetings and forge a better bond between all of us on a more personal level. We at the High Country District have decided to combine an overnight camp out at Mormon Lake on August 14-15 with our monthly District meeting, we have extended an invitation to the members of the Eagle District to join us as they have their district meeting on the same day, this invitation is extended to all and we would love to have all who would come to join us, (reservations for camping are required so please contact us if you wish to come and stay the night before. It was once said that, it is much easier to fight with, and for someone, when you know them and have invested time and effort in getting to know others involved in the same fight. So get out and visit the other districts, get to know some of the new people that have signed up, make them feel welcome, and get to know them so that they wonʼt just be strangers standing beside you in the trench. I will also go so far as to say; get out and meet members of the other organizations and clubs, give them the opportunity to undo some of the pre-conceived notions we may have formed along the way, because I am sure they will, if you are willing to give them the chance, you might find that they are a lot more like minded than some of us have been willing to admit. Tech Tips General information and update relative to the mmaaz.org website and other useful PC tips. Edward “Jersey” Smith MMA of AZ Webmaster Ironhorse District
For those of you who may not have visited our website lately, I wanted to bring you up to date on some of our latest changes.
If you are a business owner we have added a new feature that may benefit you if you have a website. It is a simple and free weblink exchange.
This is how it works, you add the link “www.mma-az.org” to your site and then come back and submit the website address, it will find the link that you added on your site and add yours to ours! Another feature of the exchange is that it will take a screen shot of your home page to go with your description.
Got an old bike for sale? Don't have a need for that sporty tank anymore? Another great feature is our new classifieds section. As long as you're a member of the MMA and have an account online (which is free), you can sell anything you like. Don't forget this new feature is free! Going forward, we have made some changes to our Contacts and Reports section. If you take the time to browse both places you will notice that instead of seeing only one section or a specific piece of information, we have taken it one step further. For example, if you clicked on Contacts in the past, you would only see the State Office List of the MMA. Now, if you browse into this area you will see a new list. This list compiles not only the officer contact information but also that of the district managers, and even more, every single districts local officers. In the Reports area you will find a similar format, however now you have access to browse any district or category that you wish.
Letters to The Editor Dear Editor, I wanted to drop a note to you about the prejudice and profiling against motorcyclist. You are probably thinking about the cagers looking at us but I’m talking about within the “Motorcycle Community” itself. The “Biker” looking at the Sportbike Rider who is giving us a bad name with his stunting. The “Sportbike Rider” looking at the Biker who is giving us a bad name with his loud pipes and attitude and those damn “Off Roaders” raising dust and destroying the desert.

We as a total can be so much stronger than as separate entity’s, look what the AMA can accomplish at a National level. Why can’t we do this on the State level? Talk to some of these people who don’t fit in your narrow area and find out how much we all have in common. Let’s reach out and try to bring this new blood into the MMA Family.
State Treasurer
My Opinion, Eric O. Dear Editor, Oregon recently passed into law a MANDATORY motorcycle training course for all riders regardless of age beginning January 1, 2011. All new riders must complete the course before they can apply for a motorcycle license or endorsement. The only course sanctioned by the state is "Team Oregon" basic rider training course and is $179.00. After completion you can apply for your license which costs $77.00 soon increasing to $87.00. That's $256.00 just to get the legal right to ride a bike. The argument is that home trained riders have a higher accident incidence during the first six months of riding then do trained riders. As true as this may be who gives a damn? That's our problem not the governments. Ron Hudson "Capt.Ron"

The Lifebuilder's Creed
Today is the most important day of my life.
Yesterday with its successes and victories, struggles and failures is gone forever. The past is past. Done.
Finished.
I cannot relive it. I cannot go back and change it. But I will learn from it and improve my TODAY. TODAY. This moment. NOW.
It is God's gift to me and it is all that I have.
Tomorrow with all its joys and sorrows, triumphs and troubles isn't here yet. Indeed, tomorrow may never come. Therefore, I will not worry about tomorrow.
Today is what God has entrusted to me. It is all that I have. I will do my best in it. I will demonstrate the best of me in it --
my character, giftedness, and abilities -to my family and friends, clients and associates.
I will identify those things that are most important to do TODAY, and those things I will do until they are done. And when this day is done
I will look back with satisfaction at that which I have accomplished.
Then, and only then, will I plan my tomorrow,
Looking to improve upon Today, with God's help. Then I shall go to sleep in peace ... content. -Dale Witherington Taken from Today Matters by John Maxwell

Rider Safety & Maintenance Tips
Safety Check Before You Ride. With the day-to-day hustle and bustle in our lives, it is easy to just put some things off. Many of us when we are ready to ride just go out jump on the scoot and head down the road. Many think perhaps inspection of the bike every time you ride is a bit of overkill. Perhaps…but it is your life. If a safety inspection is not something you want to do every time you ride then perhaps set a schedule weekly, every other week or when your cleaning your ride. Below is a helpful guideline to safety inspecting your motorcycle called a ʻTʼClock inspection. Thereʼs more to inspecting then just fluids and tires.
State of Florida Announces Large Decrease in Motorcycle-Related Deaths in 2009
Deland, FL, July 13, 2010 - In early July the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (DHSMV) announced new data revealing a large decline in deaths occurring from motorcycle crashes in 2009. Over the last few years, the State of Florida has been reporting a decreasing number of deaths while motorcycle registrations in Florida have been steadily increasing. From 2000 to 2008, Florida has reported an average increase of 12.98% per year in motorcycle registrations, but reported a 0.77%, 2.90%, and 25.10% DECREASE in motorcycle crash fatalities for 2007, 2008, and 2009, respectively.
This is welcome news as motorcyclists in Florida have just celebrated the 10th anniversary of the freedom of choice when deciding if they were going to wear a helmet when going out to ride. Ten years ago on July 1, 2000, Governor Jeb Bush signed into law the repeal of Florida's thirtyyear-old requirement for motorcyclists in FL to wear helmets. Motorcycle registrations in Florida went up nearly 20% in a one-year time span (2000-2001) immediately adjacent to this repeal. Additionally, since 2004, the State of Florida has been reporting that the majority
of motorcycle drivers and passengers in fatal crashes have been wearing the optional safety helmet. Although motorcycle helmets do offer some defensive measures when one is involved in a head-trauma accident, these numbers offer evidence that a helmet is not the magic safety device many purport them to be.
The large decline in motorcycle crash fatalities may possibly be attributed to better motorcyclists' training, as well as ABATE of Florida's copyrighted Motorcycle Safety and Awareness Program (MSAP), which has been funded in part by the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles for the last few years. ABATE of Florida, Inc.'s MSAP makes presentations to civic organizations, Driver's Education classes, public events, and many other opportunities, educating the motoring public that motorcycles are on all of Florida's roadways.

Helping Our Vets
We know many of our members are veterans and many of our districts support veteran causes. Here is some information on a clothing drive for our vets. What a perfect time to clean out the closets and donate to those who gave so much for the freedoms we hold so dear. Men and womenʼs clothing are needed, mainly men. A clothing drive is being held to benefit the Madison Street Veterans Association and US Vets Facilities in Phoenix. Donations from the drive will benefit local homeless military veterans in Arizona.
The homeless veteran clothing drive begins Flag Day, June 14, 2010 and goes until Veterans Day, November 11, 2010
Donations of adultsize clothing — including shirts, pants, socks, shoes, undergarments and hats — are needed along with duffel bags, tote bags and toiletries.
Donations Can Be Delivered to:

Care of Your Motorcycle
As summer heat is upon us, letʼs take a moment to talk about the safety and care of your motorcycle. The extreme heat we endure doing what we live for can take a toll on your 2-wheeled machine. Iʼm going to cover a couple basic things to help keep you and your motorcycle safe through the summer.
First of all letʼs talk about your engine oil. Fresh, clean oil is essential for protecting your engine. Most manufacturers recommend changing your fluids every 2500 miles. Certain brand oils claim to be able to extend that mileage as much as double. Do your homework and research what others have used on motorcycles like you have and get suggestions on what has worked well for them. Being Harley Davidson Certified, I can give you my professional opinion on fluids for the HD brand. I can tell you a couple options to help keep your engine running cooler in the summer months. Instead of the HD 20W-50 that most parts counter salesman will be more than happy to grab for you, use straight 60 weight in the summer months. This fluid will protect your motor when ambient temperatures are over 80 degrees when 50 weight only covers under 80 degrees. If youʼre in to synthetics, try AMSOIL 20W-50, which is what I run in my Nightrain. AMSOIL has superior protection for all moving parts in your motor, cools better than the HD brand, and AMSOIL claims it actually gives you a slight increase in horsepower. Check your fluid regularly through the summer for proper level and discoloration, and donʼt forget to change the filter!
The next most important item to discuss is tire pressure. Your tires are your lifeline. Over-inflation or under-inflation can lead to dangerous consequences. I have serviced many bikes that the customer has never checked their own tire pressure, and some have rolled in with only 15 lbs in them. Before any ride, you should check the pressure in your tires. Tire pressure increases as ambient air temperature increases. As your tire rotates and heats up, this will increase your pressure also. Donʼt confuse recommended tire pressure that is listed in your Owners Manual with “Maximum Tire Pressure” stamped on the tire itself. Not only is tire pressure critical to the handling of your motorcycle, but over or underinflated tires will wear your tires out quicker, and dampen your miles per gallon. Check your tires before a ride, and then when you finish your ride, to get a base setting of how to adjust your tire pressure. One of the most common mistakes is the scheduled maintenance of your motorcycle. Scheduled maintenance includes changing fluids and filters, torquing critical fasteners, lubing and adjusting throttle and clutch cables, adjusting belts and chains, greasing neck and wheel bearings, etc. Neglecting your services, no matter what time of year it is, can cause breakdowns and emergencies at the worst time. None of us want to see a stranded biker on the side of the road when itʼs 116 degrees out.

Follow these basic guidelines and help keep yourself from being a victim of the Arizona roads.
If you are not comfortable working on your own machine, take it to a reputable mechanic that will take the time to explain what he is going to do, what he has done, and areas of concern. The personalization factor seems to have been lost at too many shops. If someone else were working on my bike, I would want a one on one relationship with them. Get to know your mechanic and build your trust with them to ensure they take care of your bike as if it were their own. Thatʼs the service I strive for with my customers. Ride Safe, Ride Free. Under the Leather and Behind the Shades
Under the leather and behind the shades stands a biker. We ride for the sense of freedom it gives us. The encouragement to take the road less traveled in the chance that we may encounter something new. We ride for the friendships we make along the way, as well as, the solitude of the open road. We donʼt really care what you ride, just that you do.
Under the leather and behind the shades is a beating heart. A heart filled with compassion that on any given day will be riding for those in need. Ask one of us for help, but donʼt be surprised when all of us show up. Under the leather and behind the shades stands a proud American. We are as diverse a group of people that you could possibly assemble. We are men, women, tradesmen, doctors, lawyers, retirees, military, civilian and on and on and on. We stand silently with reverence and one voice that, in the silence, can be overwhelming. Under the leather and behind the shades stands an invited guest to the funeral of a soldier that we most likely have never met. We hold the flag of our nation as a tribute to the greatest sacrifice anyone can make. Out of respect for the fallen, we travel to stand firm for a family, a community and a nation to lean on.
Under the leather and behind the shades stands a biker with sons, daughters, brothers and sisters of our own. Beneath the rough exterior we tremble and weep at your loss. You may not see that, for we are there to support you. Thatʼs why we stand so silently under the leather and behind the shades. Unknown

Biker Vittles
Tips from the table of the ʻVittles Kingʼ
Yea, Yea…I know what your saying…a recipe column? Well you know bikers love to eat and so do I. To eat you must cook! So I am going to start out with something that most of us bikers love…. meat and beer!
Here is the recipe for ʻBeer Can Chickenʼ
Ingredients: 1 whole chicken washed and innards removed, oil (cooking not motor), 1 can of beer (your choice 16oz cans work best) and your favorite meat rub. Donʼt have one? Just grab some onion powder, garlic powder, kosher salt, paprika (all1 teaspoon each) and ½ teaspoon pepper mixed together.
Now get that grill fired up with a medium heat. Pour out (or drink) half the beer leaving the rest in the can. Rub oil on the chicken and coat with rub. Now holding the bird under its little wings carefully set bird on can of beer inserting into cavity. Transfer the bird to the grill and balance on can and legs. Grill over Indirect Medium heat until the juices run clear and the internal temperature reaches 170°F in the breast and 180°F in the thickest part of the thigh, 1-1/4 to 1-1/2 hours. Carefully remove the chicken and the can from the grill, being careful not to spill the beer – it will be hot…Duh! Using grilling gloves makes it pretty easy. Let the chicken rest for about 10 minutes before lifting it from the can. Discard the beer donʼt drink it. Cut the chicken into serving pieces and pig out! There ya have it! Ok folks next issue of the Patriot will be November/December. I would like you folks to send me your best holiday recipes. We will have 3 categories: Meat, Side Car (side dish) and the best part a dessert. I will pick one in each category to put into the next paper. Deadline for your submissions will be October 3, 2010. Send them to bikerfood@mma-az.org.
Jerry Weiers
MMA presents Representative Jerry Weiers with a Plaque of Appreciation for his work helping Motorcyclists. On August 20th Lobbyist Mick Degn and Chairman Tom Corr presented Representative Jerry Weiers with a plaque of Appreciation for all the work that he has done for Motorcyclists and MMA. Representative Weiers is a member of MMA. Representative Jerry Weiers is a State Representative from Arizona representing Arizonaʼs District 12. He was first elected in 2004.
He is chairmen of the AZ House of Representatives Military Affairs and Public Safety Committee, as well as a member of the National Conference of State Legislatures Military Sustainability Taskforce. He also serves as a board member for the Phoenix Air National Guard Patriots (PANG Patriots). Helping Veteranʼs and military personnel has been a priority to him since first elected in 2004. Currently, he is working on a project with Military and Law Enforcement Agencies to help Veterans reintegrate to society after returning from active duty tours. Another project he is working on is a Life Line system for Veterans providing them with contact information for organizations that specifically help them. He has been married 27 years. He and his wife Sandy have one daughter. He is a motorcycle enthusiast, who rides a Harley Davidson Ultra Classic and is a member of the El Zaribah Shriners Motorcycle Unit. He performs in parades across the state. He was born and raised in Deadwood, South Dakota. Not far from Sturgis, S.D. which he attended last year on his bike. This year he did over 7500 miles on “Run for the Wall”.
In February they kicked off the plans for the 2012 Arizona Centennial. The number one project listed on the Signature Events was the Arizona Centennial Copper Chopper and Centennial Rides. The copper chopper idea was the brainchild of Arizona State Representative Jerry Weiers. Being an avid motorcycle rider and a real friend in the legislature to all motorcyclists of Arizona, Jerry thought that it would be a great idea to build a themed motorcycle to honor the State and draw attention to the Arizona Centennial. Again, Representative Weiers goal was to get more visibility to the State and Motorcycle Community.
Representative Weiers is the Sponsor of HB2033 (extension of Emissions bill) and HB2475, splitting of lanes. He is also a sponsor of SB1023, Right of Way. Please take a minute to thank and congratulate Representative Weiers for everything that he does for our Motorcycle Community. Mick Degn MMA Lobbyist Lobbyist@mma-az.org
