I Like Baseball Movies T
Politics and political movies share this comparison pretty closely. In the movies, our hero uses his political power to make the world right in 90 minutes or so. In reality, politics is slow, cumbersome, frustrating and unpredictable.
don’t ride yet. Doesn’t matter, we all have some passion for motorcycles. So put that passion to work. In case you haven’t heard there’s a big election coming up. It’s unlikely that either presidential candidate is going to affect your enjoyment of motorcycling but your State Representatives or Senators surely can. Find out who is sympathetic to motorcycling and who is not, tell your friends and go cast your ballot.

o borrow a phrase from those weird guys that used to review movies, I give 2 big thumbs up for almost every “baseball” movie I’ve ever seen. I’m not sure why because I don’t especially like baseball. I don’t hate baseball; I just don’t especially like watching it. But, oddly, I own a lot of movies and some of my favorites are Major League, Bull Durham, Field of Dreams and bunch of minor baseball films you’ve likely never heard of.
Two – Let me tell you about another genre of movies. I also like political movies but I pretty much hate our political system. I’ve actually spent time analyzing my movie versus reality likes and dislikes. I like baseball movies because, for the most part, they’re pretty predictable. The good guys always win in the end unlike its counterpart in reality where the team that spends the most amount of money on arrogant, self-centered athletes wins. I also like baseball movies because in the movies the game is quick paced and exciting. In reality, it’s pretty slow moving and I can only sit through it all if plied with hot dogs and peanuts and beer.
No matter what your politics are, you’ve got to admit that we have a runaway government that wants to legislate the smallest detail of our lives. From national helmet laws to “Patriot” acts that aren’t very patriotic. How do we make it better? Let’s start with, “We’re different but not that different.” You all ride or used to ride – Hell, I had a friend whose hobby for a while was shopping for a Harley. He really had no intention of buying one but he spent lunch times and weekends and quick stops on the way home from work at the dealership. Maybe you’re one of those guys and you
And just in case you were wondering, because I’m involved in making it what I think it should be, I like both motorcycle movies and the reality of riding. See you at the polls! Gelman Editor, Motorcycle Patriot
If you would like the Motorcycle Patriot delivered to your home each month see our membership form on page two.
Point one: We are very different and not very different.
Maybe I should say,” Reality is rarely as good as it could be.” Because it could be as good as it is in the movies, couldn’t it? It would take a lot of work.
Complimentary Issue
That’s not to say we don’t have some things in common. We have at least one thing in common - If you‘re reading this article then you have at least a passing interest in motorcycles.
Point two- Reality is rarely as good as it is in the movies.

One – You looked at the headline and said to yourself “I don’t like baseball movies” or “I like baseball movies too” or “I’ve never seen a baseball movie” or “I don’t watch movies at all” or . . . You get the idea, there are likely as many different reactions as there are people reading this. We’re all pretty complex and unique – not just our likes and dislikes but our reasons for liking something or disliking it.
There’s lots of time – the election is still a month away but don’t think about doing this later. Right now, if you don’t know who represents you at the Capitol, go look it up (here’s a place to start - www.azleg.gov), make a decision and then on Election Day, go vote. Read, know, vote. It’s a pretty simple way to make your reality a lot more like the movies, where freedom reigns and the good guys (that’s us) always win.

Yes, there’s a point to this inane declaration of my movie and sports preferences, in fact, there are two points.

From the Chairman Meg and I rode up to Flagstaff Sunday, Sept. 7th to meet with a gang who are highly motivated to get the Flagstaff District up and running again, but stronger and much more active then when they first started. I advised them on what they needed to do to make things happen relative to the State Board of Directors and I know that they will be getting this done before our next Board meeting. Please read Steve's District report to get a feeling about how pumped up they are and how they are going to make things happen up there in the pines. As our meeting wound down, we were fortunate to have Dan and Delores sign on as Business members for their Hog's Family Restaurant (our kind of place). As I mentioned before, these guys certainly appear motivated to make things happen, and not just in the "good" months. It was really a pleasure to get to know them and encourage them as they move forward! I know they "will make things happen" up there in Snow Bowl country. One final note, a little on the personal side; I recently was designated the Arizona State Coordinator for the Rescue Riders organization. I
am looking for folks that ride who have at least an American Red Cross or American Heart Association First Aid and CPR certification who would be interested in joining this organization, with the sole purpose of assisting those folks in need at either a motorcycle or a cage crash. As many of us learned in a session at the N-COM meeting in Houston a few months ago, when aid is given to folks who have been hurt in the first hour, known as the Golden Hour, they will have a much higher chance of surviving and/or having their injuries protected, thereby giving them a much higher probability of healing back to normal functions. Please consider this as something that can benefit us all, and remember that there is no cost to join our organization, just the desire to help others. Well, I'm going to sign off for now so you don't get too bored reading my thoughts; be well, stay alert, and watch out for those who are not watching out for us. Hello to all my fellow riders. As the weather becomes cooler, I know more of us, particularly in the Valley, are spending more and more time on our scoots. Just r e m e m b e r, there are more and more "blue hairs" that want to be in our lane, so we must be even more diligent than ever this time of year. Remember to add uninsured coverage on both your bike and your cage, as a lot of folks are driving without insurance and registration. So should you unfortunately be involved in a crash with these folks, the costs for everything will be totally your own.

With the weather finally becoming more conducive to riding and the monsoon season nearing its end, I'm happy to say things for many of our districts are definitely "heating up" in a positive way. The Westsiders, under the leadership of Nomad and Michelle, are helping to start a district that will encompass areas that are too far away for many people to attend meetings, participate in runs, etc. I personally think this is a wonderful thing and will benefit all involved, but particularly the MMA as a whole. Kudos to you both and all the others that are making this happen. I expect the Board will have a new District to approve at the next Board meeting, as well as Board Member/s to approve also.

We want to thank Colin and Meg for caring enough about our young District to make the trip up here!

If you are a member of the riding community in or near Flagstaff contact Chris at the number listed and join the MMA (or any other MRO) to help protect your rights as a motorcyclist.
Cochise District No District Report this month. Grand Canyon District The Grand Canyon District is up and running again! Our current District Manager, Chris Kite, sends greetings to all other Districts within MMA. You can contact Chris at 928-853-1211 if you have any questions about the Grand Canyon District. He also wanted all members and prospective members to know that we meet at the Hogs Restaurant (near the Butler and I-40 intersection) on the first Sunday of each month at 9:00 am.
High Country District There is a lot happening in the Prescott area. Fall is one of the best times for riding in our area. Members of the H.C.D. will be supporting the Oak Creek Dice and Fun Run put on by the Yavapai Chapter of A.B.A.T.E. on Sept. 27th. We will also be supporting the Sisters of Scota W.M.C.'s Run for the Animals which benefits the Yavapai Humane Society on Oct. 18th. Our Trick or Treat Run will take place Oct. 26. Our road captain, Royce has laid out a great ride from Prescott Valley to New River, Wickenburg, Kirkland and finally back to Prescott. We will start at the I-Hop in Prescott Valley and end at the Pinion Pines. There will be all sorts of goodies to win if you come in costume. Dressing like a biker is not an option but a couple of people have asked me if dressing like a R.U.B. might work. So if you have an Ultra with all the chrome, but are still running a stock pipe and air cleaner and have less than 500 miles on a bike you have had for at least 3 years, and all the latest motor company wardrobe, then by all means, you have great chance of winning! All of the proceeds go toward the continuing fight for our freedom to ride and decide.
Phoenix District No District Report this month. Northern District No District Report this month Rim Country District Hello fellow riders and freedom fighters, I would like to start off by thanking everyone who shows up to the meeting every month. So far this year our meetings average right around 30 members. It’s good to see so many of our members interested in their motorcycle rights. With the help of some of these members, we had a yard sale in the parking lot at the Walmart store to help raise money to continue our fight for motorcycle rights. The money will go to flyers, the newsletter, and other needs of the District like paper. What was not sold was donated to the local senior center. The Grand Canyon District is shaping up to be pretty good. I will write about the details next month.

Speaking of the Hogs Restaurant, they became business members on Sunday, September 7. Inside the restaurant, folks can look at the Biker and Military Walls. Danny and Delores, owners of the restaurant, allowed two walls inside their eatery to be used to display photos of bikers and military personnel serving their country. If you get a chance come by and eat in a truly biker-friendly establishment.

They greeted our members who were present and stated that they were there in an advisory capacity only. Colin made some recommendations for what we needed to do for our District. He advised us to get a volunteer to be our representative for the Board of Directors and another to be District Treasurer. He also advised us to get an updated copy of the bylaws. Meg suggested that we should advertise our District so that other area riders know we're in Flagstaff and the surrounding area.
Co m
Colin also reminded us that you do not need a modified motorcycle in order to be a member of MMA. He suggested that all area riders become a member of an MRO and we told him that we would actively recruit members for MMA. Chris stated that he hopes to have a Bike Night at the Hogs Restaurant later this month. He will notify us on when that will be and we will distribute flyers to biker-friendly establishments in the area.
Some of our members plan to park our bikes down south this winter so that we can make it to other District events. We never know how much snow might be on the ground here (along with black ice) and we're sick of the weather controlling our riding time. We hope to see all of our brothers and sisters this winter.
In other HCD news, I am happy to report that Doc our ADM/PIO, and Cal, our Sergeant-atarms will be representing us at the Meeting of the Minds in Denver. I know they will bring back a lot of important information that will aid our freedom fighting efforts in Yavapai County. Stony Monday has resigned as our B.O.D. representative. I would like everyone to know just how invaluable Stony has been for the M.M.A., the H.C.D., and to me personally as well. He is a true freedom fighter in every sense.
I was at Prescott Valley Motorcycles recently and saw some of the deals they have. They are clearing out the 08 Victory’s ($1,500 accessory credit and financing as low as 4.99% OAC). They are a lifetime business member and a great supporter of our district and the MMA, so call Jerry or Steve at 928-772-4266 for a smoking deal while they last. Until next month, ride free but smart. Dawolf

Tucson District No District Report this month Verde Valley District Freedom fighters - here we are again coming to an end of another wonderful Arizona summer and looking forward to a beautiful fall season. Some of you don't get a true 'fall season' in your parts of Arizona. Let me tell you up here in the Verde Valley, we get an incredible fall every year. This year however should prove to be one for the record books since we have had so much rain this year. All the vegetation has fully grown which means that the coming few weeks should have a kaleidoscope of changing colors around the Verde Valley, Page Springs, Mingus Mountain and the upper Oak Creek Canyon with perfect temperatures, weather and unforgettable views and scenery for all riders to enjoy. Let me take a minute to give all riders both local to the area and to the ones that come to enjoy our fall riding season from other parts of the state an important safety tip. Slow down and be careful as all our beautiful trees start to lose

their leaves. The leaves begin to pile up in turns and corners, on the safety shoulders, neighborhood streets and the many back roads. They create a great hazard because they contain oils and moisture. When a motorcycle tire goes over an accumulation of them they can be as if you were riding on ice or wet oil causing you to lose traction and control of your bike. Additionally when these leaves get wet from a fall rain they are extremely slick. A little fore thought and caution goes a long way, so look out for the leaves and be careful out there. Now for a quick little legislative note to all the Verde Valley members.
Starting Wednesday, October 1, Verde Valley Bike Night will be hosted by one of our district’s oldest business members and a loyal MMA-AZ supporter - Kactus Kate's Saloon in old town Cottonwood. Stop in and say hi to Kactus Kate on Wednesday nights in October.
Think about it, once you and those you ride with get back to the end run party/chili cook off what will you be talking about? The questions of course! What will that do for the MMA? Make everyone who participates more informed. And what can more informed members do? They can better fight for motorcycle rights. They can also inform others about the importance of the MMAAZ and get others involved with the sharing of knowledge and bringing interest to others about that knowledge! Again, I can't stress enough how important it is that we have members from all MMA-AZ Districts come compete and support this event! See you all November 1st.
We have been working on an event that I would like to see every district around the state get involved in. On Saturday November 1, 2008, the Verde Valley District will be hosting the 'MMA-AZ Verde Valley Chili Cook Off and Fun Run for Knowledge.' This event will be a Chili Cook Off with four classes to enter and win - Best MMA-AZ district chili, Best individual chili, Best MMA-AZ Business Member chili, and Best M/C chili. Make sure to send your districts best chili cooking member to enter and compete for prizes and bragging rights to the Best Chili in the MMAAZ.
Ride Free, Ride Safe, Ride for your Rights, and Ride Forever HONOR, RESPECT, LOYALTY & FREEDOM!
Now for the second part of the event - it will be a run through some of the most beautiful areas and back roads of Arizona. Here is the catch, it is not your normal poker or dice run, it will be a multi stop run that at each stop the riders will draw 5 questions about the MMA, DMV motorcycle operators manual, legislative information, motorcycle history, etc. They will all have multiple choice answers. The rider with the most correct answers will be awarded a Lifetime MMAAZ membership. The idea behind this is to boost MMA and general motorcycle knowledge.

We are in State Legislative District 1 and Congressional District 1. Hope you had the chance to make it out for the Primaries. Now we have the general elections right around the corner in November. Please remember we are all together to fight for motorcycle rights. The best way to do this is to be involved and a good way to be involved is to get out and vote! The best way to vote is by being informed, here is a good website to get informed, www.votesmart.org. Together we can make a difference.

On to some local events we have ongoing and coming up in the near future. As most of you know, we started the Verde Valley Bike Night back in July and move it each month to another business member’s location. Now in our fourth month, I must say the turnout has been great. And it is growing each week. Bike Night serves many proposes – we can exchange information on motorcycle issues, talk legislative issues and upcoming events, enjoy member camaraderie, show our business members some appreciation, and attract and sign up new members.

What is Happening at the Copper Dome?
out thinking that they really accomplished something. Ride safe and well trained.
The billboards are up around the state for motorcycle awareness and I would like to know what you think. I would also like for you to send me a picture and do a little critique of location, material, readability etc. The ads are out in the local Motorcycle magazines, including the MRO newspapers. Let me know what you think.

Funny you should ask because nothing much is happening as the legislative session is out and all the candidates are running for office for the most part anyway. Today as I begin to write, the day after the Primary Elections, I am wondering how many voted and knew how important this day is? The official turnout was 14% of the registered voters. That is truly amazing when you think of it. In reality a few people made the decisions and voted for many. In other words, my one little vote actually counted as many. I am thinking that maybe it is not a good thing for hordes of people to go to the poles or vote by mail, when my single vote counts for so many. Are there any mathematicians out there that could calculate how many people I actually voted for with my one single vote? In my mind my single vote actually counted for so many. Do you think the politicians know this? Do you think they know how important your single vote is when you are one of a few?
As I am sure that most of you know by now we will have some new faces at the Copper Dome. I am not sure that is good or bad and only time will tell for sure. There were some people that were running that I am disappointed will not be there next year. I am also elated that some of the good ones will be on the ballot in November. Are you registered to vote in the November election? In my last article I mentioned a group of people that I am putting together to help the lobbyist move our cause forward. I am always looking for some good people that can learn the process and take some ideas that we have to the legislators at the Copper Dome, and maybe even to their Congress Representative or United States Senator. Who knows what will happen, but our United States Senator, could be the next United States President. As most of you know, Arizona has never had a President even though many have tried. Weather should be getting real nice for riding and that means that maybe some of you could take a course in honing your rider skills. Call me if you want an idea on where to go for this. I will be forming another one day class in the very near future. These classes are a hoot and most come

The Shriners Ride for Kids is coming up on November 1 and should be a great event again this year. This is my only charity event that I con-
tribute time and energy to for the most part. I have mentioned before that we are all volunteers and all the money that we raise goes directly to help kids. Help me help the Shriners Motorcycle Unit. Some of you may want to become Shriners and participate in the motorcycle unit. Ask me how to make this happen. Come out and meet some of the politicians that support us. They will be there supporting us and asking for your votes as the election is just a few days away from our event. Ride safe and well trained, Ray Huston Lobbyist rayofaz@cox.net
