PROFILE – GUESTS OF HONOUR

Mr V Ramnarayan V Ramnarayan is an old fashioned all rounder. At 72, he is still active in a number of fields as a teacher, columnist, blogger and author, his work including articles, interviews, profiles, and books he has authored, co-authored, translated or edited. Cricket, music, biographies and business history are part of his oeuvre. Teaching the elective Covering Cricket, as adjunct faculty at the Asian College of Journalism, Chennai, he is now wrestling with the challenge of online classes posed by the pandemic and the lockdown. A first class cricketer of the 1970s, Ramnarayan represented Presidency College, Madras University, Hyderabad and South Zone, in such major tournaments as the Rohinton Baria, Ranji Trophy and Duleep Trophy. He also played for the Rest of India vs. Bombay, the Ranji Trophy champion, in the Irani Cup of 1976-77. He was named among India’s Test probables for a couple of seasons. At a time when India had a problem of plenty in the spin department, he was regarded as one of the leading off spinners in the country. Over the last three decades, Ram has been a contributor to The Hindu, Sportstar, Businessline, the Sunday Express, Times of India, Economic Times, Deccan Chronicle, Madras Musings, Vidura, ESPN Cricinfo, The Cricket Monthly, Wisden India, Wisden India Almanack, First Post, DNA, Chennai Online and Asiaville News. Mr V V Kumar * Viswanathan Vaman Kumar ((born 26 June 1935, Chennai) is a former Indian cricketer who played in two Tests in 1961. On his debut he took five wickets in the first innings against Pakistan in Delhi in 1961.Unfortunately, he played only one more Test match, versus Ted Dexter’s England team at the Brabourne Stadium, Bombay, before being discarded forever. Few batsmen in domestic cricket mastered Kumar, the master leg spinner. He had more than 400 Ranji Trophy wickets and 599 first class scalps in all in his long career. He took part in two hard-fought Ranji Trophy finals against Bombay in 196768 and 1972-73, both of which Madras lost despite Kumar's splendid bowling. Despite his consistent successes, his return to Test cricket was blocked by the emergence of the unorthodox but match-winning leg spinner B.S. Chandrasekhar. After his playing days, Kumar has distinguished himself as a coach, first heading the MAC Spin Academy at Chennai, and later helming the Chennai chapter of the National Cricket Academy of the BCCI. An acute thinker on the game, VV Kumar is a much sought after commentator on the game on a variety of platforms. VV also had a successful career as a bank officer, retiring as a deputy general manager of State Bank of India.
