So What Exactly is MMA? By: Chris du Toit
I have recently attended a competition that was advertised in the media as being a “Cage Fighting/ MMA” event. I was asked to referee at this event and I gladly accepted. After all, we all have to do what we can to build and promote the sport, right? Great was my surprise when I saw the actual fight card for the evening. There were12 fights scheduled over various weight divisions, but what baffled me most was the variety of fights of different types. In between the MMA fights there were several Shidokan, K1 and kickboxing fights scheduled inside the cage. When I asked the promoters about this, they replied “This is MMA,...Mixed Martial Arts. So we are mixing the Martial Arts, by putting several martial arts in the cage.” I just turned around and walked away. So, what exactly is MMA? A lot of traditional style clubs and gyms have converted from focusing on a single style like kickboxing, karate or tae kwon do, to catering for a wide variety including boxing, Muay Thai, BJJ, Krav Maga and the list goes on. These clubs and gyms claim to teach Mixed Martial Arts, because they offer a mixture of martial arts all under one roof. So, is this MMA? Is what they offer in these gyms the fastest growing sport in the world? Most certainly NOT! What these gyms offer and what the event posters to the tournament I mentioned should have said, isn’t Mixed Martial arts, but “Various Martial Arts.” MMA is a style in its own right. Although it can be comprised of number of different disciplines, and may differ in composition from one club to another, the basis and principle stays the same. MMA is not an added extra to another style. We are a group, a discipline and a phenomenon like no other. We owe no other style anything, and in my opinion trying to steal the thunder of MMA’s success by “piggy backing” your discipline in an MMA event is just sad. You can no more call two kick boxers fighting a kick-boxing bout in a cage “cage fighters”, as you can call two chickens fighting a cock fight in a cage that. Or two kids having a pillow fight in a cage are they cage fighters too? The cage is an MMA trademark, and in my opinion using it for whatever else, not only breaks down the sport we are building up, but confuses an already confused general public that are our spectators at MMA events. INDUSTRY ADVICE
So What Exactly is MMA? By: Chris du Toit
We are working to educate the public to our sport, because this generates not only a dedicated fanbase, but sparks interest in the sport, and helps us grow. People attend MMA events hoping to see something resembling what they see on television watching the UFC or Strike-Force. Now you throw people in the Octagon wearing karate suits and yelling “kia” every time the punch. The spectators leave an event like that thinking “I still haven’t seen a real cage fighting event like the ones they show on television.” Quite often when you host an event in that same area again, you will find that a lot less people will show up. The same goes for running a karate club and adding different disciplines to our menu. This makes you a “Various Martial Art Club” NOT an MMA club. Sure there are a lot of MMA clubs that offer other disciplines, but usually these disciplines would form part of their MMA training, like BJJ, boxing, or kick-boxing. It is not a kick-boxing club, it is a MMA club, but you can train in just BJJ or kick-boxing, you do not have to do the full game if you don’t want. This is usually for people who want to do something for fun and fitness, do not want to compete, and dislikes or are not comfortable with a certain aspect of MMA. In conclusion, please, and I am going to say again, PLEASE, martial artists let’s stay out of each other’s domains. Make a decision if you want to do MMA, or whatever else you are doing. Keep our sport clean and pure. Happy Training and remember “Never Back Down!.” [ Comment on This Article ]

Equality in MMA (Gina vs GSP) By: Cord Crowthers
The buzz around the MMA world these days seems to be the discrepancy of pay between professional women and men fighters. On average the women are receiving approximately 10% of their counterparts. Yet they are consistently being showcased as some of the best fights on any card. What the hell?, you might ask yourself. How can this be the case in today’s world of equality in the work place? There are several factors that play into this, that need to be addressed if any significant changes are going to be made. Let’s keep in mind that MMA is the fastest growing and fastest changing sport in the world! It wasn’t long ago that it was illegal in most parts of North America not to mention the fact that there were no women fighters in the spotlight. So I ask myself, how can there be an event that features a Men’s title fight as well as a Women’s title fight, with the training, work ethic, danger, hype, & ticket sales virtually equal. Yet the pay rate is disgustingly lopped sided. And in most cases the women’s fight is rated as the better fight of the night and is a fact that it contributed to 50% if not more of ticket and pay per view sales. The excuses you hear for this dilemma are… The men are better known, sponsors support the men, the weight divisions are more complete for the men. Although there is some truth in these statements, what it really comes down to is representation or lack thereof. Women aren’t the only ones getting less than they deserve. Many male fighters are getting their heads caved in for a couple hundred bucks every weekend. As in most sports there are a few executives getting very rich off many athletes. The difference is athletes in other sports have taken control of their careers and have had the time to form unions, players associations, & athlete groups. Continued on the next page...

Equality in MMA (Gina vs GSP) By: Cord Crowthers
With MMA being relatively a virgin sport and women’s MMA being even newer than that, the potential for abuse is huge and is in full force throughout the MMA community. This being said, it’s hard to point the finger. It’s human nature to follow the rule of. “If you let me, why wouldn’t I?” So without a voice for fighters what is stopping promoters from paying what they want, to whoever they want? So in closing, both women and men fighters can complain or discuss the thousand reasons and excuse why they don’t get paid equally, but until they get the chance to have better representation, the changes they are looking for will be slow coming! Just Saying! [ Comment on This Article ]

Do Your Homework By: Ron Dayley
Research is important. In most aspects of life it pays to do your homework. And, selecting an MMA school is no different. I know so many people that selected a gym based on who the gym’s fighters are, based on the fact that they have a handful of fighters with good records. And, that makes total sense, right? No, it doesn’t. That’s a face value assumption. This is where taking the time to do your homework becomes invaluable if you want to pick the “right” gym/trainer. Have you ever wondered how some gyms that have terrible BJJ, Muay Thai, Boxing, MMA; have some good fighters when their coaching staff is a joke? Well folks, it’s because they recruited the fighter from other gyms. These fighters, in some cases, were asked to leave because of differences of opinion, egos, personality conflicts; or left on their own because the new gym made promises to them or even paid them to join their gym. Anybody can poach a fighter. It takes time, skill, money, and hard work to build a quality fighter. There aren’t too many gyms in most states that can produce quality fighters, and doing it on a consistent basis is even rarer. The schools that can and do are the ones that warrant your business. You have to research the coaches and the fighters of a gym before joining them. If all the good fighters’ histories lead back to one gym or coach, that’s where you want to be. Just because a gym has a handful of good guys doesn’t make them a good gym; they never developed the talent, the fighters, the reputation that the original gym did. And, don’t make the mistake of doing incomplete research as well. Just because a fighter has been with the same gym since he started doesn’t mean that his trainer has been the same. MMA has a lot of egos in it. It’s not an uncommon occurrence for a head trainer that spent years developing fighters, developing a team to have a falling out with the owner and/or instructors and subsequently move on (either by choice or force). Pay attention to who trained the fighters at any given school and don’t assume that just because they have been at that gym all along that the level of instruction hasn’t changed. Do Your Homework By: Ron Dayley
These gyms are buying or stealing credibility, or trying to at the very least. The old gym just keeps chugging along because they know that they will build more champions; that they have the skills, knowledge, and experience to do it. They did it before, they’ll do it again. Most of the time the fighter(s) end up coming back to their original trainer once they come to the realization that the old coach does actually know what’s best for them and that they (the fighters) don’t have a full understanding of the fight game or the tools to grow without the guidance of a seasoned trainer. I know of a few gyms right here in TN that have no qualms about taking credit for the work of others and that haven’t produced anything. But they have a couple of good fighters at their school now because they had a falling out with their old gym. Now this new gym is acting like they are “the gym” in town, funny thing is that the fighters still talk and ask advice from their original coach at their old gym. Why? Because even though they couldn’t work together the fighter knows that the old gym is better, that the old coach does know what he’s talking about, and that the old gym and trainer are much better connected in the industry. The old coach still helps the fighter because after years of training the fighter from a young pup to a Pro fighter there is a special bond, kind of like father and son. You may not agree with the kid’s choices but you still want what’s best for him, just as you would for your own child. The new coach doesn’t have this bond with the fighter because he has no time, money, or grief invested in the fighter; to him, this kid is just something he can use to build up his gym – an attempt to make them appear competitive with the gym responsible for the creation and development of “their” new fighter. It’s undeserved and unwarranted recognition. The gym/trainer that brought that fighter up is the gym that has earned your business. Do your research! [ Comment on This Article ]

How to Effectively Lose Weight in a Short Time and Keep it Off By: Chris Pedroza
1. Make an effort in choosing your nutrition plan. Read, ask ME, and compare. There are many diet programs that are available but choose the one that can greatly increase your metabolism as it is very effective in burning fats. Use this diet plan and start burning calories and fats inside your body. Again, make sure that your diet plan can boost your metabolism and not the other way around. 2. Be Freakin' Disciplined! If you are sincere about losing weight and eager to attain slender body in just two weeks control yourself from eating food that has saturated fats. Examples are fried foods like French fries, meat balls, meat loaves, and the like. Also, exclude any type of junk foods from your food list and avoid excessive drinking of alcohol, caffeine intake, as well as nicotine. MAYBE DO A CHEAT DAY ONCE A WEEK FOR ANY CRAVINGS YOU MAY HAVE, BUT DONT OVERDO IT! 3. Make sure you drink at least six to eight glasses of water every day. This will help remove the toxins inside your body. You may also try some fresh vegetable and fruit juices to help satisfy your thirst and cure your hunger. 4. Lastly, exercise regularly. Don’t miss even just one day and strive to sweat better to increase metabolism without stressing yourself too much. Also, be sure you take enough sleep at least 6 to 8 hours every day. Why Interval Training? By: Chris Pedroza
Let us take a look at the various benefits that interval training brings to an individual: -First, your cardiovascular system & the heart muscles are strengthened. As you go on performing the exercise day after day, your body gradually adapts to the workouts and the resultant changes better over time. Your body develops new capillaries & develops resistance to the lactate production. -Second, alternating high intensity exercises with low intensity exercises minimizes the risk of injuries and burnouts. You can sustain injuries and burnouts if you practice sustained high intensity exercises as your body might not be able to adapt. Periods of low intensity exercises ensure that your body gets that much required breather. -Third, The American College of Sports Medicine points out that more calories can be burned with high intensity exercises than that with sustained low intensity exercises. OR "TYPICAL" GYM CRAP! -Fourth, it has been observed that interval training may be great to sustain your motivation levels. Since you are not required to devote a long period of time, you will most likely be able to sustain the workout to achieve great results [ Comment on This Article ]

[ SFF Profile ] Reviewing Author: Ron Dayley - SFF Company Being Reviewed: Datsusara HCG-02 Company's www.dsmma.com Website:www.dsmma.com Datsusara HCG-02 – 100% GI By: Ron Dayley
Datsusara‘s hemp gi has a traditional BJJ cut, the hemp material is super light weight and is said to be 4 times stronger than cotton. I have owned other hemp gis in the past, GroundForce being my favorite until now. The GF gi was more a karate cut gi with a thin collar but weighed nothing. The Datsusara is heavier but most of the weight is in the collar. The collar is about as thick as a Krugan or Koral collar. The gi is machine washable and can be dried at low heat. Unlike cotton gis, the Datsusara dries fast and gets softer with each washing. It is nicely taped and heavily stitched at all the high stress points. The gi I received was an early production run and had some loose threads that I had to cut off but that wasn’t a big deal. The material is so light and “airy” that you can see light through it. Like all light weight gis it is easier for your opponent to grip but I’m alright with that , it’s a small price to pay for the comfort. I never felt restricted or got hung up in the gi like I do with my cotton gis. The pants are made of a heavier weave. It is nicely reinforced at the knees and the back of the pants are taller than the front which helps cover your butt. The pants come with a flat draw string and an extra rope draw string. If you are in the market for a summer gi, you can’t go wrong with the Datsusara. At a price of $149.00 its right on par with the other premium light weight summer gis. What can I say, I love this gi.
