I Live in a Small Town With No MMA Gyms, How Do I Start Training? By: Jimmy Fortunato

Option 1: Drive to the closest MMA gym. Depending on where you live this could be up to 2 hours away. Option 2: Re-locate to an area that has an MMA gym. If you choose this option be sure to do your research, interview a few gyms you're interested in and visit each one before you commit to relocating. Option 3: Stay where you are and start your own MMA gym. Don't go at this alone. Gather help from friends and family. Tell them your plans and show them some short term goals you have. Ask them for their help and support. For option 3, you will need the following: 1. 2-4 guys as training partners. These guys must be reliable, accountable to their training schedule and drug free. 2. Money to invest in books, DVD's and nutritional supplements. Work extra hours and budget a certain amount each week to go to your MMA education fund. If you don't have a job... GET A JOB! Don't beg others for money when you're not willing to work. Working a job is also part of your MMA training. All jobs teach you to work with others, follow orders, be on time, etc.. All these traits are necessary if you want to be a successful MMA fighter. 4. A trusted advisor. This must be an older, wiser adult to oversee the venture and keep the boys in line. Young guys that want to be MMA fighters will always need someone to put them in line. When it comes to guys and combat sports, it doesn't take long for their ego's to go sky high. This trusted advisor must have a strong personality and be able to tell the aspiring MMA fighters the tough stuff that no one else will. For example: "Sit down and shut your mouth boy!" Without a trusted advisor a start up venture like this will surely fail. 5. Someone to organize bringing in outside coaches and trainers. This person will do the research on what trainers to bring in. They will organize all the traveling arrangements, lodging, food etc.. Since you're training for MMA, coaches from following disciplines are recommended: BJJ, Boxing, Wrestling, Sambo, Judo. Bringing a trainer to your home town every 8 weeks or so will also create a buzz and excitement in your town and help attract more support for your MMA venture. Also, you can only learn so much from books and DVD's. You NEED a real coach to train you. As you meet different coaches you might have an opportunity open up, where you can bring one of these coaches to your town to live and coach your small MMA team full time. 6. Bible study and church. Simply put...NO bible, NO breakfast. When you get up read your bible. Get your spiritual nutrition before you get your physical nutrition from food. On Sunday's get to church! If you can get up early to run, jog, train and lift weights you can get up to go to church. Consistent bible study and church will keep you in line morally and teach you that you're NOT number one. Then, after doing ALL this work the aspiring MMA fighter will get a girlfriend and the whole MMA thing will go right down the drain!! So with that said... HAPPY TRAINING! INDUSTRY ADVICE

I Live in a Small Town With No MMA Gyms, How Do I Start Training? By: Michael Ortiz

Here are some basic starter tips & questions. 1. Find at least one friend with the same interest as you. 2. Find a good MMA book and read it. This will start opening up your imagination, and it will keep you focused, get your wheels turning 3. Start doing some cardio. (The #2 weapon of a fighter.) 4. Research the schools in your area if there are some. (Now remember, everyone should develop a foundation.) If it's something that you like or something that you may need in your MMA arsenal, then this may be an opportunity for you to start somewhere. One thing I hate, is a karate guy trying to teach grappling from what he thinks he knows. 5. If there are no schools in your area, make the investment to train once a week in another town. It would be wise if you have your training partner accompany you. That way you can work on the moves you learned doing the week. 6. Buy an MMA training book. Read it once, then put it away. When working your ground techniques, it's important to have a solid jiu-jitsu base before practicing these techniques. 7. Develop your core strength either before you start some form of training or during. These are my tips. Michael A. Ortiz Texas Kmobat www.texaskombat.org [ Read Full Article – Click Here ]

INDUSTRY ADVICE

I Live in a Small Town With No MMA Gyms, How Do I Start Training? By: Daniel Hurtado De Mendoza

My first question would be, "How remote is the small rural town?". If the town is indeed in a very remote area, it can present a challenge from a training aspect. MMA has its main components and supplemental components. I consider the main components the martial arts aspect, like striking, grappling, groundwork, etc.. The supplemental components would be the mental and physical conditioning. They are all components necessary to succeed in the MMA world. I call the Martial Arts aspect of it, "The Main Components" because one has to first acquire the adequate tools, in order to be able to apply the mental & physical fortitude and strength. If a fighter's home is nowhere near a gym he/she can join a high school wrestling program, if such a program exist. If not, the fighter can at least look up different exercises for conditioning AND basic fighting techniques on Youtube. There are some really good Youtube videos showing basic conditioning drills that only require your own body weight and handmade equipment. I mentioned BASIC fighting techniques, because the fighter doesn't have a good reference guide, so he/she will want to avoid picking up bad habits. Beginners have a tendency to look up flashy and/or complex combinations. Not having the understanding that in order to do them, you need to have a certain level of basic proficiency, to execute more complex techniques. These two approaches can truly help with basic development and keep the fighter active, until he/she can find a gym. My second question is, "How serious is the fighter about pursuing this as a career?". This is key, because if the fighter is really serious about it, he/she will have to work hard, save up money, and move to a town with a training facility. Saving up money will cover basic expenses, until the fighter can find a job. Coach Daniel DEFWAR www.Facebook.com/DEFWAR www.Defiantwarrior.com [ Read Full Article – Click Here ]

INDUSTRY ADVICE

I Live in a Small Town With No MMA Gyms, How Do I Start Training? By: Roman

First off. One does not need a Gym to train in MMA! There are many conditioning techniques and forms of strength training that you can do, to accomplish what is required to build stamina and strength. As for the many different skills and disciplines that are required, YouTube videos are a great source for any and all types of standard forms of MMA training. From Wrestling to Karate and even Muay Thai. There are many simple instructional videos that help one learn many of the required necessary moves and strikes. When it comes to practice, having a training partner is invaluable. You will not only learn quickly from your mistakes this way, but the sense of competition, will add to your learning curve, should you have a training partner who had the same interest... TO WIN! Using what you have available as tools, training is easy. No weights or machines required! Find ways to use what you have available to create a workout in your basement, garage or backyard. One of the best online MMA video sites for MMA Instruction is on YouTube, called "MMA Surge". Notice the backdrop and the ground. Chain link fencing and layers of cardboard, make for an easy and inexpensive cage! When you find you need to advance your skills look for local tournaments. Grappling is a great way to start, before you go head first into MMA. The NAGA national grappling tournaments are some of the best ways to meet others who are in a similar situation, aspiring fighters looking for others to spar and train with. You can also check with your local gyms, and ask if they would be willing to allow you to use areas of the gym, for MMA conditioning drills. They can be done on a small matted area, in as little as 8 x 8 foot. Remember, this form of training includes many types of disciplines and many years of dedicated training. Follow what you are drawn to and do well at it. Pursue any and all avenues that will allow you to continue your training, with individuals who can help you advance, learn and continue to grow. The sport is changing everyday. The great thing is, the constant evolution of exercise and the way we train in this ever changing and quickly growing sport of MMA. INDUSTRY ADVICE

I Live in a Small Town With No MMA Gyms, How Do I Start Training? By: Luis Reyes

My name is Luis, also known as Coach Louie by my team. Nowadays, there are so many resources at people's disposal in order to learn MMA. I have very minimal gear at my house for example, but I do still practice and watch videos. Combos are always on YouTube. MMAVault.com has an online Netflix like website where you can rent DVD's and watch them at your leisure as you practice. While you will not have someone there to watch your form, you can still learn the basics. Critique yourself by videotaping yourself hitting the heavy bag. Check your stance, your striking, your head movement and then go back to practicing. Again, sometimes it takes a trained eye. For your Jitz practicing needs, Gracie University has a great program. Roy Dean also has a plethora of DVD's with live rolls with his students. I have always found that just watching MMA fights I can get what I need. Ask yourself, did that work for the fighter? Could he have moved his head better? What mistake did he make that caused him to get knocked out and what could I do in practice to avoid a situation like that? The other thing too is that MOST MMA fighters TRAVEL to get their training. Sometimes up to a couple hours drive and that is NOT uncommon. Post an ad at a local food market and you would be surprised how many people feel the same way and want to train. Hope some of this helps. INDUSTRY ADVICE

I Live in a Small Town With No MMA Gyms, How Do I Start Training? By: Zach Hoerth

Your best bet when living in a rural area or an area that just doesn't have any training options is to get creative. Initially, I would develop a good understanding for the sport from what I could find online, in books and magazines. Watching videos and reading articles is a great way to develop your MMA vocabulary and your mental database of techniques. Once you have enough info to start training techniques, don't hesitate to grab your little brother, even your girlfriend (be gentle or she may not be for long) and work them on the living room floor. As you develop, I'd work outside to determine the interest in my area. Then I would start organizing it, so we could all train and learn together. Relationships with local schools and wrestling clubs can also be very beneficial. Not only will they provide you with adequate facilities to train in, but probably decent athletes that you can refine your skills with. As your skill set and training network expands, you may find yourself opening up something more permanent or solidifying a deal with a school. Your team can have a sustainable home, where they can develop and grow. I hope this information helps and like everything... if you want it bad enough, you'll find a way! INDUSTRY ADVICE

I Live in a Small Town With No MMA Gyms, How Do I Start Training? By: Glen Coleman

Find other fighters in your like position. We are located in a rural area and we get fighters from all over the United States. However, those within a 30 mile radius, often bunch together to form teams out of their garages. You can train by yourself all you want, but you still need others to spar and roll with. Additionally, there is strength in numbers. Many fighters make up a team name and bond together to get the training they need. Some have become very competitive. Don't fool yourself, there is nothing like experience and those who really know the game. So, look for gyms that you can visit and that might let you come in to roll or spar with their students, just to get some fresh opponents. I know many schools that do this, among the schools we associate with. As a group you will also find it easier to get fights. We always try to let a couple independent fighters on each card, so we won't miss out on some great unknown talent. Let's be honest, as a promoter, it is much easier to deal with one contact person for a group of fighters, rather than having to spend the time with each one. Once you have developed a record, it becomes easier to find fights because the promoter knows you will show up and you have the record to prove it. In the meantime, consider the items mentioned.
