Safety in the Gym? By: Chris du Toit
All over the world, governing bodies have put rules and regulations in place to enforce and secure safety in the sport of MMA. Different sets of safety precautions have been set aside for both the amateur and the professional league, and up to now MMA have earned a remarkable safety record for a full contact sport. As coaches, judges and referees we adhere to these safety regulations religiously, making sure that not one detail is overlooked. This is all in plain view of spectators and the general public, but how about where there are fewer eyes, where the arm of the governing bodies doesn’t always reach? In other words, how do you enforce safety in your gym or club? I have trained in many gyms where light hand sparring without a mouth guard are allowed, at the “students own risk.” And I have trained in even more gyms where broken or faulty equipment are not repaired and still used in training. I have seen students work the heavy bag without gloves and train full force kicks on torn kicking shields. We have to pause and ask the question, “is this acceptable?” And allow me to answer that straight away, by saying “Hell No!” The unfortunate truth is that most coaches will let it be, until someone gets injured. Yeah I know we all got provision for that in our contracts and if someone does get hurt training in our gyms we won’t be held liable for any blah blah blah and so forth and so on. That covers us fine. But what covers your student? We have to remember that these athletes put their safety in our hands. It is our responsibility to make sure that the environment they train in is safe and hazard free. We have all had our share of injuries, and we know how discouraging this can be, and how frustrating it is waiting out the recovery period, just to start your training all over again weeks or months later. You never really pick up where you left off, and some injuries, though healed can hold you back for your entire career. Continued on the next page...

INDUSTRY ADVICE
Safety in the Gym By: Chris du Toit
It is our responsibility as coaches and instructors to stop the guy without the mouth guard from sparring, to remove the torn glove from the glove rack, to stop student from working the heavy bag without gloves. Now, that might not seem like a huge offense, but take a moment to think about it. Gloves are there for a reason. Not only do they protect the skin that covers our hands, but they lessen the impact and strain on the little bones in our hands and give much needed support to our wrists. I am well aware that a lot of students want to condition their hands, but hitting the heavy bag without gloves is not the most intelligent way to do this. You are actually doing more unseen damage than you realize. MMA already has a pretty rough and tough image out there. Not adhering to safety precautions at the gym level isn’t softening it up, but merely working smart. Nothing will ruin your gym’s reputation and scare people away like a major injury that could have been prevented by just being a little stricter in applying general safety. Remember that you are investing our knowledge and ways in your student, and he learns not only from what you say, but what he sees and experiences in your gym. One day he might own a gym of his own and he will apply the same standard of safety that you did when he was training with you. I know that no one wants to feel like a party-pooper by stopping someone from sparring, but it is in their best interest as MMA athletes and you are the guardian of that interest. In conclusion, let us all make a concerted effort to check, fix and uphold the same safety regulations in our clubs that we impose on our competitions and tournaments. Happy training, and remember... “Never Back Down!” [ Read Online ]

Complete Game of MMA By: Morné Swanepoel
The latest craze must surely be MMA or Mixed Martial Arts. Modern Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) emerged in 1993 with the Ultimate Fighting Championships, based on the concept of pitting different fighting styles against each other in competition with minimal rules, in an attempt to determine which system/martial art would be more effective in a real, unregulated combat situation. In the late 1990's and early 2000's, MMA competitions implemented additional rules for the safety of the athletes and to promote acceptance of the sport, while maintaining as much of the original no holds barred concepts as possible. There are very few rules in mixed martial arts, all of which were established over the last ten years or so. Before that, mixed martial arts was a brutal combat sport in which the health of the fighter was always at risk. The new rules dictate that certain moves including head butts, biting, eye gouging, attacks to the groin area, kidneys, striking to the back of the spine and trachea are prohibited. Because there is no worldwide association presiding over mixed martial arts, rules vary from country to country and from tournament to tournament Since these changes MMA has grown rapidly to the point of setting pay-per-view records with various organizations and competitions igniting the excitement in the world of Martial Arts again. The Early days…. Mixed Martial Arts has been around since man discovered the need to defend himself using various methods of combat. It was however the late Bruce Lee who made the movement more structured by creating a unique fighting style that combined everything from western boxing to karate to fencing. That's right, it was the renowned Lee that coined the phrase, "The best style is no style, the best form is no form," he later stated that you must take what works from different martial arts and discard the rest. This is exactly what MMA is based on; two competitors attempt to defeat each other by potentially utilizing a wide variety of fighting techniques, including manipulating areas of striking and grappling. INDUSTRY ADVICE Complete Game of MMA By: Morné Swanepoel
Lee devoted his life to studying martial arts, and even went to the extent of creating his own ‘style’ which incorporated various styles into one in the late 60’s...Jeet Kune Do...which literally means ‘Way of the Intercepting Fist’ 'The best fighter is not a Boxer, Karate or Judo man. The best fighter is someone who can adapt to any style. He kicks too good for a Boxer, throws too good for a Karate man, and punches too good for a Judo man' - BRUCE LEE Today fighters are attempting to follow these steps, taking the best of what they have studied and bringing it into the ring. The best MMA fighters are the ones who continually cross-train in several realms of striking and grappling to become the ultimate warrior…. Enter the world of the MMA warrior…. What is a warrior? One definition is someone who engages in or desires combat. History’s greatest Warriors have however shown us that being a warrior is more about gaining control over oneself in all aspects of life. There have been many famous cultures of the past that glorified the warrior. The Spartans, the Romans, the Persians, the Knights Templar, the Mongols, the Vikings and the Samurai were societies that were famous for the development of their warriors. The legends of those warriors have been passed down because of the impact they made on the consciousness of the world. The warrior tradition is still alive today. Since every generation has its warriors, we have just lost sight of how to recognize one. A new breed of warriors has, in fact, exploded onto the landscape of the world through the vehicle of Mixed Martial Arts (MMA). These men and women will be the role models that future generations will use as a gauge of their own warrior status. There is nothing more primal and intriguing than watching two fighters battle it out in a ring or cage for glory. Even though they may not be battling in a life-or-death scenario, the main attributes of these modern-day warriors are the same as those of the warriors of the past. Styles in MMA? MMA is the most complex form of combat known to man. When Royce Gracie shocked the world, back at UFC1 in the 1990’s, everybody thought that BJJ (Brazilian JiuJitsu) was the ultimate art of fighting. A style that could beat every other discipline of fighting. Many people thought that learning BJJ was enough to compete in the UFC. But with the growing popularity of the UFC and more and more talented fighters from different horizons coming to compete in the octagon, it was rapidly proved that BJJ was not enough. Fighters started to borrow skills from different styles and slowly invented the cross training art of fighting. Today, only a well-rounded fighter using a highly elaborated cross training style can succeed in MMA. MMA is a hybrid Martial Art, which combines all ranges of unarmed combat. Combining the best and most effective techniques and training methods of various styles into one: Continued on the next page...

INDUSTRY ADVICE Complete Game of MMA By: Morné Swanepoel
- Stand Up Fighting The MMA athlete needs to be able to throw punches like a boxer and be able to kick like a Thai Boxer/ Kick Boxer. - Clinch Fighting Here the MMA athlete will draw from various systems and styles as punches, knees, elbows and takedowns are the order of the day. Greco Roman wrestling, freestyle wrestling and Muay Thai forms a strong foundation in the clinch - Ground Fighting Arguably the most technical range in MMA. Here the MMA athlete needs to be able to dominate superior positions on the ground to set up devastating submissions and ground-n-pounding. Brazilian JiuJitsu, Submission wrestling and Sambo/Shoot Wrestling forms the foundation here. Everybody in the MMA world trains to be a winner, but not everyone is willing to do the preparation it takes to win. Expose yourself to Stand Up, Clinch and Ground fighting to ensure you become a complete fighter. How well you train, how well you plan your training, and how hard you work is all up to you. If you train athletically with fewer restrictions you have more options that you can actually apply. These are the aspects you have control over. Fighting knowledge, developing a combat athletic mindset, and becoming fighting fit through combat athletics Whether one is a fighter or just want to train like one, anyone can develop the fitness of body and the strength of character of a warrior. The mind of the warrior is just as important to work out as any muscle. Without the cooperation of the warriors mind with the body of the warrior, no success is possible. Although you can train certain muscles of the body only every once in a while, the mind of the warrior can and must be trained consistently everyday. The mind-set of the warrior will eventually determine his destiny as a fighter, MMA athlete and his eventual destiny in life. To control the mind is to control one's thoughts. When this is done correctly, the warrior is able to control his actions. This goes for anyone wanting to start MMA training as well. Most people are put off from training for reasons such as fear and negativity i.e. ‘I can’t do that stuff’ or ‘I am too old’ or ‘I don’t need this I can look after myself’ etc. Acquiring the ability to quiet the mind and stop it from running wild in these types of emotions and thoughts is often one of the toughest tasks for the new warrior. The results are so rewarding when one leaves the ego at the door and takes this first step to a better lifestyle by obtaining the warrior mindset. The demanding training of MMA is rewarding as it develops the mindset that no matter how hard life throws you to the ground, you will always get back to your feet and hold your head high!

Three Food Myths You Should Know About? By: Chris Pedroza
Myths grow from all kinds of misinformation, and the foods that you eat also have some myths surrounding them. Some of them are traditional which you may have heard from your grandmothers; while some come from “new age” health gurus. So to make sure you know the fact from the fiction, here are some foods myths that need to be revealed. MYTH #1 - You should avoid all kinds of carbohydrates. When it comes to food and weight, two most blamed groups are the fats and the carbohydrates. No carb diets have become the byword for many and even celebrities endorse the goodness of such a diet. It is true that people are often advised to stay away from carbohydrates; but what most people don’t know is that, there is a distinct grouping of good carbohydrates and bad carbohydrates. Moreover, not all people need to avoid carbs; people who are overweight and have sedentary lifestyle are often asked to reduce their intake of carbohydrates. Our body needs carbs to stay fit and healthy; so you have to provide these by eating the right kind of carbohydrates. That includes whole grain products like brown bread, whole wheat pasta and most grains. Even potatoes can be good for you, depending how you eat them. If you just boil them or roast them, they are good. But the moment you deep fry them as French fries, they become unhealthy. Remember if you don’t have carbs in the right proportion, you will have problems like constipation, muscle aches, headaches and for growing children, this can retard their development. MYTH #2 - Protein only comes from animal meat. Proteins are made of amino acids and our body can’t produce eight of such acids. So it is a common belief that we have to have meat products to get those amino acids. Continued on the next page...

Three Food Myths You Should Know About? By: Chris Pedroza
But it has been successfully proved by scientists that plants also have these amino acids in them and it is not exclusive to animal meat only. You will only have to look at nature to see it; gorillas, elephants, giraffes are all strong and big animals that are totally herbivorous in nature. If they did not get protein, it would be virtually impossible for them to reach their size! So, it is true that plants do have all kinds of protein that your body needs. In fact, it is seen that average people who opt for vegetarian food live longer than their non-vegetarian friends! They get their requited proteins from pulses, soy products and nuts. MYTH #3 - You need to have dairy products to have calcium. We all know the importance of calcium in our diet. That is why from childhood we are encouraged to eat diary products as it is believed to be the only source of calcium. But this is also a half-truth; there are many plants and other food items that are good sources of calcium. In fact, too much of high-fat dairy products can lead to heart attacks and strokes. The rule is to have them in low-fat format and also eat foods like spinach, broccoli, tofu, soy milk and beans to get the required calcium amount for your body. Now that some of the food-myths are revealed to you, make sure you change your diet and eating habits if these myths were influencing them before. Eating right is the first step towards a healthier and longer life; so make sure you do it right. [ Read More ]

Importance of Warming Up By: Chris Pedroza
More and more people are beginning to understand the benefits of getting and staying fit and how the need for exercise fits into overall fitness. This means that there are more people who are not only joining gyms and exercise programs to get fit, but who are devising their own modes of exercise at home. However, what many people fail to realize is that there is more to exercise than simply doing those jumping jacks, jogging that track or hitting that rowing machine or exercise bike. While doing all those things can help to make you more fit and healthy but if you are doing those things without warming up first and cooling down afterward then you may be setting yourself for pulled muscles and sprains and other painful situations that will stop your exercise routine cold and can even cause you to lose time at work and cost you money in doctor bills. How Warming Up Can Save You From Injury? When you first get up in the morning or after a long day of work sitting at a desk or even standing to do your job, your muscles tend to stiffen from lack of exercise and movement. This is a natural occurrence that happens to everyone. Even if you don't feel that your muscles are stiff and cold they are. Stiff and cold muscles can only move so far and when pushed past that point, injury such as strains and pains result. In order to prevent those injuries you need to get those muscles warmed up before you start any serious exercise. There are a variety of ways you can begin to warm up your muscles before you begin exercising them. Walking around to get the blood flowing a little faster while not over extending the muscles, shaking your arms and legs to get your extremities warmed up. The idea behind warming up your muscles is to get the blood flowing a little faster and to provide mild exercise that does not over extend the muscle but, allows it to loosen and move more freely without any pull. Keeping your warmup to low impact activities will help to reduce the chances of pulled and sprained muscles as well. One of the best ways to get in a little low impact warming up before you exercise is a mini trampoline. Even something as simple as just jumping up and down slowly at first and faster and faster while shaking your hands and arms can help to get the blood flowing to all your extremities and begin loosening your muscles. There have even been special warming up exercises devised for the trampoline that will warm up almost every muscle of your body and get those muscles prepared for whatever exercise you plan on doing whether it is jogging around a track or playing a mean game of tennis or basketball. So, just remember before you exercise to walk it, bounce it and shake it and get those muscles warmed up and blood flowing and chances are you can avoid serious injury and enjoy your exercise sessions much more than you believed possible. Three Things MMA Needs in 2011 By: J. Alex Mattis
In 2005, the MMA rocket took off and has been cruising ever since, getting faster and faster each year. In 2008, we all thought ‘how is the sport going to have a better year than this?!’ In 2009, we thought the same. As 2010 winds down, it’s only natural we look to 2011 and ponder what’s in store for MMA. One thing to take note of is the improvements the sport needs to make in order to reach the next level of mainstream acceptance. As MMA, and the UFC in particular, reach unprecedented levels of success the holes in its game become more apparent. I racked my brain for the most important changes that need to be made, and three immediately came to mine. 1. The UFC Needs A US National Television Deal MMA has been seen on US national television before, and with the exception of the Fedor-Rogers fight, it was a bust. Initially, we saw the ultra controversial reign of Kimbo Slice in Elite XC. Then on to Strikeforce, where we were treated to the infamous “Nashville Brawl,” which no one knew how to handle. It was great to have MMA seen on that kind of platform and like I said, the Fedor-Rogers event was fantastic. However, the promotions that hosted these events came off looking very jumbled and unaware of how to handle the responsibility. For someone who had never seen an MMA event before, the Elite XC/Strikfeforce shows would have come across as quite puzzling. The UFC knows how to present television. They have had years and years to get into the groove they are now in. Whether or not you enjoy the fights of a particular card, one can never question how they are presented. It’s been long rumored that Dana & Co. have been trying to secure a national television deal. If so, they need to hop on it. The sport is swelling, and this period of enhanced interest needs to be taken advantage of. Continued on the next page...

Three Things MMA Needs in 2011 By: J. Alex Mattis
CBS didn’t quite know what to expect with MMA (and credit them for taking the risk) and what they got was questionable content. If CBS or NBC gave the UFC the green light, the material they would received would exceed their needs. There is no scenario where it wouldn’t be a huge step up for the sport. 2. Dana White Needs to Relax It may seem like I was trying to bury Elite XC/Strikeforce in my prior point, but that certainly isn’t the case. Strikeforce, Bellator, etc. are very much needed for the sport to continue to grow. Dana White doesn’t seem to, or doesn’t want us to know that he does, understand this. Any business needs competition to make them strive to be better. Any sport needs different tiers of competition. Hockey isn’t just the NFL, football isn’t just the NFL, baseball isn’t just the MLB. You see where I am going. Unless Dana wants to Vince McMahon MMA before it even peaks, he needs to see the Bellators and Strikeforce for what they are - the training grounds. Scott Coker is a sharp guy; he knows Strikeforce is the minor leagues and he would never try to go head-to-head or dollar-for-dollar with the UFC. For Dana to go out on a consistent basis and blast the lower tier promotions does nothing but hurt his image, and the sport overall. Chalk it up to his fear of MMA because the murky cloud titles and rankings that boxing turned into or just his desire to be the unquestionable ruler of the world, but Dana White is hell-bent on the UFC being the be-all end-all. Mr. White needs to just chill and realize that these kinds of things are inevitable and that no one is going to come close to touching the UFC. The UFC is the ‘big time’ but MMA needs its minor leagues. Also, while I’m we’re on the topic… Dana, please quit blasting The Reem. 3. Judging Reform I didn’t think I could have been more peeved with a decision than when Melvin Guillard was erroneously awarded a victory over Jeremy Stephens in September. I was wrong, very wrong. We all know what happened with Nam Phan and Leonard Garcia… I don’t ever condone wasting a beer by throwing it at your television. I did that night. There isn’t much more to say about this issue. It seems damn near every fan, fighter, and corporate big-wig has been campaigning for serious change in MMA judging. Will it happen? The eight ball says: Outlook not so good. As an MMA fan, and an aspiring MMA journalist, I have enjoyed the ride we went on in 2010. While there are changes that need to be made, the sport of MMA continues to improve and bring us the purest athletic competition on Earth. 2011, here’s to you! [ Read Online ]
