Foreword Welcome to the latest issue of Instinct magazine, bringing you the latest news, customer stories and new products from Sealine. I hope you are enjoying the long summer days of the current boating season and spending some quality time on the water. As we approach the beginning of the main boat show season with Cannes in September, we also look ahead to the launch of our exciting new product – the much anticipated SC35 which will make its debut at the Southampton Boat Show. We talk to Steve Coultate, Sealine’s Managing Director and Carsten Astheimer, Design Director about the new model as they share their thoughts and views. F42/5 customer Justin Adams shares the secrets of boating around Scotland’s beautiful west coast, whilst Sealine Sea School Captain Richard Corbett gives his insight into boating on the Solent. ollowing the launch of the SC38, Sealine have followed up with the latest contender – a modern, stylish and practical 35ft sports convertible. Sealine’s Managing Director Steve Coultate and Design Director Carsten Astheimer share their thoughts on Sealine’s next new product.

Q: What can you tell me about the SC35? SC: This new boat represents the next important

step for Sealine from a performance, exterior and interior features and styling point of view. It builds on the very strong reception that the SC29 received and the SC38 earlier this year. It demonstrates a number of core strengths that Sealine has built up over the years including superb use of space, light airy interiors, well thought out layout and our unique convertible roof system.

CA: It represents modern styling and quality

craftsmanship yet is a bold step forward with respect to design, characterised by a fullness of shape. This gives more space, with clean and crisp surfaces, plan view symmetry and an overall visual simplicity. Key features include the use of space and natural light below deck, a comfortable cockpit, a hull designed in collaboration with Ocke Mannerfelt, and the ability to close and open the fully retractable, convertible roof in seconds.

Q: What was the idea behind launching a boat of this size?

SC: It was a natural move following the success of the SC29 and the SC38, and combines the thinking and knowledge gained on the development of these boats to replace the S34 which has been a fantastically popular Sealine.


CA: SC35 will be the next natural successor to the S34,

originally launched in 1998. This size of boat is also part of Sealine’s core product strengths, fitting in naturally with the SC range which comprises the innovative SC29 and more recently, the SC38 launched earlier this year at the London Boat Show.

Q: Why another coupe? SC: The demand for coupes in other boat sizes made the SC35 the next natural step. Customers really appreciate the ability to have a ‘wind in the hair’ feel of an open boat but also the ability to protect instantly against the elements.

CA: We wanted to complete the soft top convertible sports range which has already been a great success.

Q: How do you think this latest model represents Sealine in terms of design direction?

SC: I am tremendously excited by the SC35. It continues the development that we saw with the SC38. It takes

the natural colours, clean lines and styling to a new level whilst never forgetting the practical and performance characteristics that Sealine has always been renowned for. We were determined not to make this boat a “me too” offering. We were aiming for a product which excited people, that offered something truly different and modern but also which had widespread appeal to our loyal customer base and beyond.

CA: The SC35 will be a corner stone for the new Sealine

design direction – pure full shapes cut with taught lines which create a crisp and clean design. Visual simplicity, symmetry and comfort are recurring themes throughout.

Q: What features does the SC35 have? SC: It shares the same convertible roof concept as the

SC38 – quick and easy to use offering versatility to move from ‘open’ boating to a covered cockpit within seconds. The design team have worked hard to maximise volume throughout the craft and the saloon skylight provides more light, creating an even bigger sense of space. >>

The spacious cockpit includes a sink and grill for sociable and comfortable dining. The double helm has been designed for maximum visibility and comfort.

CA: It has a new interpretation of some key Sealine

features – the saloon skylight and convertible roof to name just two. It is however setting new standards for many areas in the boat - seating is deeper and we have used dual density foam cushions (specific to Sealine) for more comfortable seating, and a simple yet effective all new bolster seat mechanism has been introduced. The furniture has also set new standards of craftsmanship and seaworthiness with stronger and deeper edging and a softening of all sharp edges with the use of solid walnut. The interior comfort is also characterized through the colours materials and finishes – black and washed walnut wood combined with the primary natural pallet of ivory, chocolate brown and silver blue fabrics. The secondary pallet offers a fresh contrast with lime green, papaya orange and dark blueberry tones.

Q: How would you describe the SC35? SC: The best of modern British design and

engineering; a blend of clean, natural styling, excellent accommodation, great performance, practical features and innovations.

CA: The SC35 can be described as having great

practical innovations using premium quality materials and craftsmanship, exceptional use of space, and all executed with a clean, comfortable design.

Q: How do you hope customers will perceive SC35? SC: First impressions of a great design are sometimes

to feel slightly challenged, then fall in love with it. This is what we found when SC38-001 was shown at the London International Boat Show earlier this year, and four months later, the same boat appeared in Lake Maggiore in Italy at the 50th birthday anniversary of Solcio, our Italian distributor. At 11pm as the spotlights danced on the water and classical music played, the guests assembled on the terrace of an island restaurant overlooking the water. SC38 – 001


came out of the darkness and into view. I have to say it looked fabulous – it truly was the most attractive boat on the lake. That’s how I would like it to be with the SC35.

CA: The practical innovations will give ease of

use; the use of space means the boat will be great for families and friends. It’s a very social boat and the overall quality will give the product reliability therefore the confidence to be adventurous.

Q: What will set the SC35 apart from the competition?

SC: The sociable and spacious saloon area has a

SC38 The journey so far Earlier this year, Sealine launched the SC38 at the London Boat Show. This innovative sports cruiser incorporates modern interior and exterior styling with distinctive features. Practical and stylish, light and spacious, the SC38 includes a unique convertible roof system, striking two-tone hull and full beam saloon skylight. Since leaving the Sealine factory, SC38 has travelled extensively, met the world’s press, been to the Med and back and was unveiled by TV presenter Vicky Butler Henderson. A

nother day, another hardtop boat. Soon, open sportscruisers will be seen as the radical design option! But then hardtops seem to suit everybody, not just those who go boating in temperate climes: protection from the blazing sun as well as the blazing rain, no annoying fiddling with unco-operative canvas canopies at the end of a relaxing day’s cruising, and the big bonus of being able to use your cockpit as a second elevated saloon, open air or otherwise. Altogether, hardtops have a strong argument in their favour.

The soft option

But it’s not the end of the decision-making. Designers still have to choose between a ‘hard’ hardtop with a solid sunroof or a ‘soft’ hardtop with a fabric sunroof. Although the consensus seems to be that a well-designed solid sunroof can look classier, the soft option favoured by Sealine aboard the SC38 offers three considerable advantages.

Firstly, solid hardtops are often perceptibly noisier with their roofs shut, whereas the SC38 is quieter because its soft fabric canopy reflects far less noise. One small section of our prototype boat’s sunroof did whistle under way when it was closed, but presumably Sealine will cure this. A second point is that the SC38’s fabric sunroof is also remarkably speedy to deploy: between five and ten seconds to open or close, so long as you push the roof back dead straight so the sliders at each side of the roof run smoothly. Finally, the soft option’s principal advantage is sheer size. With relatively little parking space needed for the concertined fabric, the opening can be huge – maybe not twice the size of a solid roof but certainly far greater. Consequently, with the roof open the SC38 feels far more akin to an open-topped sportscruiser than a conventional hardtop does. If you want fresh air and a wonderful view of the sky, it doesn’t get much better than on board the SC38, and given that this feeling is precisely what steers some buyers towards open sportscruisers and away from hardtops, this is a big plus.

Driving the SC38

Here at MBY, we like rough weather – it helps to test a boat as thoroughly as possible. So the forecast for the day sounded great – a gusty Force 6 with 2m waves. The reality was closer to a blustery Force 5, with no more than 2-3ft waves, but still plenty rough enough to stretch a beamy nine-tonne boat with a hull length of 35ft 0in (10.68m). This hull is identical to the outgoing S38 we tested three years ago (MBY September 2003), but with the burden of extra weight, particularly at the rear. This comes from the lengthy glassfibre hardtop, with the hefty D6-350DPH Volvos also adding around 400kg (880lb) at the stern compared with the KAD300-propelled S38. Our engineroom was also carrying extra cargo: the optional generator and full aircon package. Things were shaping up for a nose-in-the-air ride, and a bumpy one at that! In the circumstances, the SC38 was full of surprises. I’d anticipated the boat riding more bow up than the original S38. Instead, the new boat confounded expectations by running exceptionally level. Even with the sterndrive legs trimmed out to between +3.0˚ and +4.0˚, we recorded some of our lowest trim figures ever at around +3.0˚ – on a par with the exceptionally low trim usually achieved by stepped-hull boats. And despite having to drive its beamy form through the nasty Solent chop, the SC38 offered a remarkably smooth ride. Thanks to its low trim angles, the SC38 kept its deepvee bow sections effectively immersed without help from the sterndrive legs or the trim tabs, so trimming it was a breeze. Nor did we have to slow down in these conditions – the boat would run quite comfortably around 31 knots without complaining, and even the

full 39 knots was possible with a little more bumping along the way. Smooth ride aside, the SC38 does have a different feel to more slender boats, such as the Fairline Targa 38 or the Windy 37 Grand Mistral. Although the SC38 is beamier, it needs a lot more trim tab to correct any wind-induced heel. It has a livelier ride too, and you would swear that the boat is either smaller or lighter than its aforementioned counterparts, even though that’s not the case. In the turns, the SC38 performs very well, only losing speed conspicuously when you perform crazy full-lock, full-speed turns. Cornering like a madman in bumpy conditions normally results in the chine or the lower edges of the topsides banging uncomfortably, but the SC38 was remarkably smooth here too. It’s not easy to bestow a voluminous cruising boat with a smooth upwind ride – Huntons and Windys are thin for a reason – so this is a real achievement for the SC38. With exceptionally sprightly handling and 39 knots on tap from the largest 350hp D6 Volvos, the boat’s impressive ride would amount to naught if the driver’s lot were poor. Fortunately, it is excellent. bolster does not flip up, but instead hinges from its front edge. Although this places the helmsman unusually close to the adjustable wheel, it worked fine for me (short) and for Lester (not short). However, if your shape is more Jo Brand than Russell Brand, you will probably find the space between the wheel and the seat a squeeze. In theory, our 39.0 knots with the largest 350hp D6 Volvo sterndrives translates into a respectable 31 knots with the smallest D4-225hp, 33-34 with the D4-260hp, and 36-37 with the D6-310hp. As always though, the engine’s torque characteristics and the overall weight and balance of the boat have a considerable effect too. Consequently, my instincts suggest that the D4-260s should work well on a lightly loaded boat, but I’d tend to skip the D4-225hp and weighty D6-310hp options, and given how well our test boat rode in the rough conditions, go for the D6-350hp if you can.

Accommodation

Nowadays, it seems that we just can’t get enough light down below. Builders are obliging with ever larger windows, portholes and skylights, packing them in wherever there is a gap in between what’s left of the surrounding structure. Still, few have gone as far as Sealine have on their SC38, fitting the biggest stainless ports possible wherever they can, and – strikingly – a pair of huge skylights directly over the middle of the saloon. Fortunately, these are not blanketed in any way by the hardtop – look up and you see straight through the large front windscreens and up to the sky above. It’s a wonderful feeling. Down below, there were two other highlights: the

luxury of a large shower compartment separate from the main heads, and the impressive galley. It’s a fair size but it’s more the detail that impresses –for example, the capacious drawer for pots and pans, the deep basin with its large domestic kitchen tap, the numerous tumbler holders built into one of the lockers, and the large opening port to waft away smells. Easily the most innovative feature, however, is the stainless steel trench that runs behind the countertop. This could be used as a secure berth for everyday items such as tea, coffee and mugs. But thanks to its drain, it can also be used as an elongated draining board for the washing up – one of the few I’ve seen that would be safe to use under way. The only thing I felt disappointed with in the galley, and to a lesser extent elsewhere too, was the disparity between some of the finishes. For example, the exquisitely finished hardwood saloon floor and the classy stainless steel in the galley genuinely would not have looked out of place on the multi-million pound Sunseeker 37M we explored at ExCeL. Yet the sharpedged laminates that constitute the bulk of the SC38’s furniture and doors look less like wood than any of the pseudo-wood laminate finishes that Sealine have used before. Likewise, the superbly moulded glassfibre wardrobe linings for me formed an uncomfortable contrast with the cheerless grey laminate that lines the majority of the other lockers. Like all questions of style, this is an entirely subjective opinion – you may feel differently. The ‘Wear & tear on furniture?’ in the Thumbs Down section is a question rather than a criticism.

with all of Sealine’s boats, the fuel system’s changeover valves are very clearly labelled – it would be difficult to make a mistake here. However, like almost all other European boats, there is little labelling on anything else; ten minutes with a labelling machine would help the less informed to find things in a hurry or an emergency. Most obvious above decks is Sealine’s generosity with their handrails, which are sprinkled liberally around the cockpit – a crucial safety feature on a boat capable of 39 knots. Sealine have duplicated the great idea they developed on their SC29 (see MBY September 2005), where the sunbed infill for the main seating simply slides out from beneath its permanent home underneath (the table can be stored here too) and drops into place. However, they need to work on their heights – our cushion infill did not sit flush with the surrounding cushions, and that could prove uncomfortable. Stowage comprises two under-seat lockers, a useful top-opening locker to the left of the companionway, Above and below decks and an invaluable large void under the helm seat, wide Down in the engineroom, Sealine’s moulded glassfibre enough for a liferaft and long enough for things like lining provides a neat and tidy cover for siting the deck brushes. Classy switchgear taken from their bigger boats controls the lights, complete with dimmers. Unless you are taller than 6ft 3in (1.90m) you are unlikely to run out of headroom or berth length. Most of the stowage is easily accessible. Back aft, there’s no room under the berths, so stowage is okay but not class best. Up front, the forward berth cushion splits across its width (so much more comfortable than the usual split along the berth’s length), allowing Sealine to provide a large and easily accessible moulded locker under the foot end of the berth.

Hardtops may be the new black, with every Tom, Dick and Harry having a punt nowadays, but with their new SC38, Sealine’s designers have managed to conjure a unique package. As much as anything, this is down to the workings of its elongated hardtop that has the potential to provide owners with an experience that comes remarkably close to the wind-in-thehair feeling on board an open sportscruiser. At a stroke, this hardtop also turns the SC38 into an all-weather boat suitable for temperate climes. But it’s not just North European boaters who’ll benefit – with the sun blazing ever more brightly everywhere, we all need more protection from extreme sunshine, so Med boaters benefit too. If you intend to use the SC38 for cruising, you’re unlikely to be disappointed. It offers reasonable stowage down below, excellent headroom and berth lengths, and a fine galley – four prerequisites for a good cruising boat. It adds to this mix a shower compartment separate from the main heads – a boon for early morning ablutions – and an abundance of ventilation and natural light, in particular through its overhead saloon skylights. There is another important strand to consider. Often, a choice has to be made between a voluminous cruising boat and a more slender rough-weather machine. But not with the SC38. Okay, ultimately it’s not quite in the same league as the slimmer Fairline Targa 38, but its lively handling and rough-weather ride are impressive enough that you would probably only begrudge the modest differences if you were driving hard through seas that most of us would normally choose to avoid. When it comes to outright performance, the SC38 has the 35.4-knot (on test) Targa 38 beaten with its nippy 39 knots. This gives the SC38 the potential to cover a huge amount of ground very quickly – imagine, cruising from Hamble to Dartmouth in four hours! MBY

None of the SC38’s rivals offer the same mix of pros and cons. The shorter and more slender Windy 37 Grand Mistral can’t match the SC38 for room on board, and the same goes for the Nimbus 35 Nova Coupé. However, both these boats offer an exceptional all-weather cruising experience. More akin to the mainstream SC38 is the Bavaria 38 Sport HT, but even this differs because it comes only with Volvo’s 310hp IPS400. The SC38 really scores with its hardtop. Closed up tight, it feels almost as snug as any ‘hard’ hardtop boat, but with its enormous soft fabric sunroof rolled back, no other boat gets as close to being an open sportscruiser. One threat for those on a budget may come from a smaller boat. The beamy Jeanneau Prestige 34 hardtop sports an outstanding deck, and it even surpasses the SC38 for deck stowage. The 34 took fi rst place in the ‘Engineering, Construction and Build Quality’ section of our hardtop group test (MBY July 2005), but it doesn’t have anywhere like the SC38’s gentle ride in bumpy conditions. Of course, its twin-cabin accommodation has less room, especially the single heads and galley, but it all works well, and just look at its price – £145,079 with D4260DPH sterndrives.

For the Love of God, is a life-size cast of a human skull in platinum, covered entirely by 8,601 VVS to flawless pavé-set diamonds, weighing a total of 1,106.18 carats. It is without precedent in the history of art. On one level, the work is a traditional ‘Memento Mori’, an object that addresses the transience of human existence. ‘The skull

is out of this world, celestial almost’ writes the distinguished art historian Rudi Fuchs. ‘It proclaims victory over decay. At the same time’, Fuchs continues, ‘it represents death as something infinitely more relentless. Compared to the tearful sadness of a vanitas scene, the diamond skull is glory itself’. Damien Hirst was born in 1965 in Bristol, UK. He lives and works in London and Devon. For the past two decades he has been widely acknowledged as the most important and influential artist of his generation.

hames Boat Sales Group was appointed official Sealine dealer for the Thames and Medway areas earlier this year. Penton Hook Marine Sales, based in Surrey and Bray Marine Sales in Berkshire are both part of the group. Bray Marine Sales was founded in 1992 when Marina Developments (MDL), the operators of Bray Marina, decided to focus its activities on marina management and sell off their sales office to tenants. Dominic Smulders, who had worked for MDL at Bray for five years, chose this opportunity to start his own business – a dream he held since leaving school. Dominic’s success at Bray was well received and he was approached in 1998 by MDL offering him the sales site at Penton Hook when the tenancy expired. Chris Manners, then Sales Manager at Bray Marine Sales and Dominic decided to go into partnership. Penton Hook Marine Sales opened its doors on 1st

May with just three brokerage boats and 90 empty berths. However, over the next eight months Penton Hook’s reputation grew and it was not long before the sales pier was fully occupied. Penton Hook Marine Sales was recently awarded the ‘Customer Service Award’ for outstanding at the IPC Media Awards which took place during the Collins Stewart London Boat Show on 9th January. Nominated by ybw.com readers, this is the only category voted by the public. Chris Manners comments, “This award backs our commitment to customer service and has been the focus of our company ethos from the start.” Although having been appointed agents for a number of new boat manufacturers, Thames Boat Sales were still looking for a new boat agency that offered a large range of styles and sizes - Sealine ticked all the boxes.

Secrets of Scotland “The F52/5 offered a good level of luxury”

When most people think of Scotland, they often don’t associate its cold climate with motor boating. Scotsman Justin Adams feels his native country has so much to offer – he experiences Scotland’s stunning scenery from the comfort of his Sealine F42/5. Born in Prestwick on Scotland’s beautiful west coast, Justin has travelled the world since and still regards Scotland as the only place to live. It was during his travels in Mauritius that he went out on a boat for the first time.

Justin says, “My wife chartered a 40ft sports cruiser as a treat for me. What really surprised me was the way she took the helm. She really enjoyed the experience of being in control and in charge of the boat. It was then that we decided to buy a boat of our own.” When Justin and his wife looked into buying their first boat, they were particularly attracted to Sealine. Whilst waiting to take delivery of their first boat, ‘Louise of Granton’, Justin undertook a number of courses to develop his boat handling skills and spent a lot of time on the water. He says, “Scotland’s west coast is one of the best-kept

Patrice Pinel, in charge of Guerin Marine, went to the Southampton Boat Show to look for a new range of boats to sell to the French market. At the show, Patrice discovered Sealine. Guerin Marine, based in Tessy sur Vire, northern France, took a range of Sealine boats to the Paris Boat Show in December 1984 and since then, has continued to represent Sealine at the Paris and Cannes Boat Shows. How right he was when my wife and I traded up from a 27ft med deck boat to ‘Kinetic Adventurer’ - a one year old Sealine 450 Statesman berthed in Brighton Marina.” “Our first trip from Brighton to our berth in Cobbs Quay marina in Poole, but only making it to Cowes, took 7 hours in a force 8 - that was after bumping off several pontoons and taking out the water and electrical box on our berth and trying to get off in the first place. Arriving tired, wet, exhausted and very relieved, this trip could have been enough to put us off boating for life, but the 450 proved a very competent vessel which, over the 5 years we owned her, involved regular trips across the Channel, up to

Berthing in the Mediterranean We all know how difficult it is to find a permanent berth in the Mediterranean, but the process is further complicated by the way they are advertised. Just like property transactions in Spain, brokers often share and advertise their listings with each other. The benefit to the seller is that their berth is seen by a much wider audience, but this can prove detrimental to buyers and sellers alike. By contacting several brokers, it can appear to the seller that there is more than one person requesting their berth. If it is listed with several agents, this can create a false impression to buyers that there are more berths available than there really are. Shopping around to find a similar berth at a lower price is rather pointless. It wastes the buyers, sellers and brokers’ time. It is much better to let one broker do the leg work with their wide range of local contacts. It’s the supply and demand which affects the ultimate price of a berth, and should it appear that there are several people wanting to purchase a particular berth, even though it may be only one person in reality, this can lead to sellers thinking the demand for their berth is greater than it really is. This means you may find yourself paying more for your berth than is necessary, or the seller becoming disappointed by not achieving the sale. Only recently, a report commissioned by the Spanish Government concluded that in 2005 a total of 2,276 yachts were seeking berths in Andalucia alone, and by the year 2022 that figure will leap to over 5,000 yachts in just this one area. The report concluded: “The demand from the nautical sector of the tourism market on the Costa Del Sol alone is reaching unprecedented figures, which can only be remedied by a dramatic upgrading of facilities. And goes on to suggest that: the Costa’s ports would need to increase by 300 per cent the

number of available mooring spaces just to satisfy the current requirements.” Apart from a small number of marinas, those berths that do come onto the market are often snapped up quickly. Prices continue to rise and for those wishing to rent a berth, the chances of finding one is difficult especially if you are trying to locate one from your home country. If you want to rent a berth, the best way is to rent one from the marina of choice, as is in most marinas, you are not allowed to rent a berth from a private owner. If you are thinking of buying a berth, a further 7% of the purchase price should also be allowed for the tax that is applied to these transactions and you will also need the services of a lawyer. It is also a legal requirement that anyone wanting to buy a berth in Spain will need an NIE number issued by the Spanish Authorities. This a Foreign Identification Number (numero de identificacion de extranjero ) and is a necessity in all fiscal or legal matters in Spain, even for buying a car. The number is personal to you and is not transferable and neither does it expire. Whilst an inconvenience, this can be arranged by the solicitor acting for you on the purchase of your berth. Despite this, buying a berth in Spain, or anywhere else in the Mediterranean makes sense. Not only should it increase in value over the term of the lease, but it also provides security of tenure, which is not always the case with a rented berth. Genoa International Boat Show

T

he International Genoa Boat Show is the ideal stage to see over 2,000 boats on display, ranging from motor cruisers and sailing boats to some of the world’s finest super yachts. This year’s event, which takes place on 6th – 14th October spans nine days and attracts visitors from all over the world. The event, now in its 47th year featured over 1,650 exhibitors last year displaying a variety of products including boats, nautical accessories, clothing, diving and fishing equipment. Visitor numbers totaled around 324,000. One of the show’s main attractions for 2006 was the New Marina with a 60,000 square metre water basin, which increased the overall available water surface to 100,000 square metres making the Genoa show one of the largest floating shows in the world.

The 46th show also featured the 88ft long Maltese Falcon – one of the largest sailing yachts in the world built by Perini Navi. Representing Sealine again this year will be exclusive distributor Solcio, who recently celebrated its 50th anniversary and has now worked with Sealine for over 20 years. Boats from the T, S and F-series will be on display and are likely to include the flagship T60, award winning F34, the SC38 with its unique convertible roof system, and the brand new addition to the Sealine model line up, the modern and stylish SC35. Originally targeted at a small public audience of just 30,000, Fiera de Genova launched the first Genoa Show in 1962. The show has developed over the past 40 years to become one of the world’s leading boat shows and currently extends to over 280,000 square metres. Fiera di Genova, the site of the Genoa show is close to the city centre and directly overlooks the sea. It was reclaimed during the 1960s and today includes four main pavilions, large outdoor areas and two marinas which, for the Genoa Boat Show, can host more than 430 boats up to 80 metres long. Future plans for the site include a new pavilion, which will create the illusion of blending into the blue of the sky and sea. The project, which follows on from the enlargement of the marina in 2006, will make Fiera di Denova even more unique. The works, which began earlier this year, are expected to complete in Autumn 2008.

The show is served by good transport links. The nearest airport, ‘Cristoforo Colombo’ is just 10 kilometres from Fiera di Genova, with the ‘Volabus’ shuttle service available taking you straight to Genova Brignole railway station. The station is less than 1 kilometre from the site with bus numbers 31, 19 and a special service available to the show. Open every day from 10.00am until 6.30pm, entrance tickets are priced at around 13 euros with discount admission available, and free entrance for children up to the age of five. Groups of more than 30 can purchase discounted tickets at the counters. The city does get very busy so if you are planning a trip, book your accommodation well in advance. During the evening, Sealine’s SC38 made its Italian debut, appearing under the spotlights on the lake accompanied by the sounds of classical music.

The event began with a champagne drinks reception followed by dinner. A four piece brass band entertained guests at their tables during the meal.

The following day saw the start of Solcio’s open weekend, which was held at both the lakeside location and Solcio’s main coastal location of Solcio Di Lesa.

A childhood dream come true

N

ew Sealine owner John Reddington has harboured an interest in boats ever since he was knee high to the proverbial grasshopper. His fascination with anything nautical goes back to the early ‘50s when his Uncle Walter built a boat out of scrap metal and wood he found in post war Liverpool. “As Liverpool was badly bombed in the war, there was a lot of scrap around and he used to go and collect it with his son David,” recalls John, adding “He was a very skilful man and making boats became his hobby”.

Uncle Walter’s first boat was made entirely to his own design and named Jackie 1 after his daughter. It was to be followed by Jackie II, this time built to plan, several years later. “We used to travel from Fleetwood to the Leeds/ Liverpool canal where the boats were moored at

Haskayne in Mum and Dad’s Morris Minor 1000” recalls John. And that was how John’s love of boats came about. Many years later, when he had become a successful businessman at the helm of Ortofon UK, John chartered boats for staff outings along the Thames. In 2001, when he celebrated 30 years of married bliss with his wife, Chris, they hired a Thames steamer to take their friends and relations for a big floating party. But after enjoying a day out on a 64ft motor yacht in Majorca a couple of years ago, John hatched a plan to buy his own boat. Last year, when his company, Alphason Designs Ltd - the UK’s leading AV furniture manufacturer - was bought by AIM listed Armour Group, John decided to invest some of the money he made from the sale of his shares into buying a boat in preparation


for ‘winding down’ from the position of Managing Director. John says, “I like quality and I wanted to ensure that I bought a boat with a similar standard in the nautical world to the Mercedes brand that I like to drive.” He and son Brian first visited the 2005 Southampton Boat Show where they were particularly impressed with Sealine and former Sales Director, Jason Hudson. As the sale of the company was delayed they had to shelve their plans until the following year. When they visited the 2006 Southampton Boat Show, they were delighted to find that various developments had been made to their favourite boat, the Sealine SC29. John recalls: “The Sealine stand was very well placed near the entrance. We had a look round when we arrived and when the salesman caught our attention on the way back, we were hooked.”

John was particularly impressed with the lovely design of the SC29 and after sea trials in the Hamble, he got his cheque book out and the buying process began. “I was very interested to visit the Sealine factory at Kidderminster and compare some of the processes with those in our own furniture production factory in Atherton; especially how they dealt with their wood production” says John. He was also impressed by the way the interior was built at the factory and then ‘dropped’ into place in the shell of the boat, apparently unique by boatbuilding standards. In fact, this aspect of our business has greatly contributed to our enormous success and helped us to achieve record turnover over the past ten years.”

“I’m absolutely thrilled to bits but frightened to death too” admits John, who doesn’t consider himself as a very good swimmer. But he knows from the 3-day sea trials he had with Sealine trainer Doug Griffiths that he is quite safe in his new craft.

John and Chris took delivery of their boat earlier this year and are excited about their future cruising. They have chistened her ‘Nauti D’Or’ in honour of their 3-year-old grandson who, when he bumped into a glass door on the motor yacht they hired, was heard to exclaim “Naughty door!”

In May this year John took his boat to a mooring on the River Thames near his home but hopes to return it to the Hamble in 2008.

Doug demonstrated what can only be described as a ‘bit of a wheelie’ in Chichester Harbour which Nauti D’Or completed with no problem at all.

The Solent Playground or training ground, it really doesn’t matter because the Solent has everything. From the perspective of Sealine Sea School Principal, I see the Solent as both. When I’m out training on the Sea School’s Sealine F42/5, it’s my office. All the harbours, marinas and anchorages provide scenario after scenario for learning what to do with your new boat. The weather never seems to be the same from one day to the next which adds to the variety of learning conditions. In fact, every time the tide changes, the waves change along with mooring and anchoring procedures. “Sometimes, on a busy summer weekend it can be like Piccadilly Circus out there.”

Frankly, if you can cut the mustard in the Solent, you can pretty much go anywhere, and I know plenty of past students who can testify to that. One couple who took their RYA Day Skipper training with me, have recently navigated their way down to Lanzarote and that is no mean feat. The down side, and there’s always a down side, is that these historic, sheltered, picturesque waters

can also get extremely busy. Sometimes, on a busy summer weekend it can be like Piccadilly Circus out there. Racing yachts heeled over, spinnakers flying, buzzing around the cans like a swarm of insects; sailing cruisers battling the tide trying to get in before sunset; commercial shipping picking their way through the whole melee; motor cruisers and RIBs batting up and down – a bit crazy – but extraordinary fun, just the same. As a playground, the Solent is second to none. If you’re a sailor, travelling at 5 knots having a selection of stopping off points in close, easy reach is a huge bonus. Setting off from Portsmouth to try and make Poole for dinner would be quite daunting unless you knew that you could duck into Yarmouth or Lymington if you ran out of steam. From our point of view, of course, that’s not really an issue. As motor cruisers, for us the dilemma is where do we go first? Getting from one end of the Solent to the other in less than a day is a breeze. I’ve already mentioned Yarmouth and Lymington; both ideal jumping off points for a trip across the Channel or along the South Coast.


Yarmouth has a busy harbour, shared with local fishermen, the RNLI, local sailors and the Wightlink Ferry which goes between Yarmouth and Lymington. Beware of the ferry when entering and departing from the harbour – he is big and has priority. But the ferry can also be very useful… you can quickly identify the exact position of the harbour entrance by watching for the ferry going in and out. Once moored up, and be careful if you tie onto the harbour wall, you will need to adjust your lines as the tide comes in and out. There are plenty of shops and things to see, the selection of restaurants is excellent too; my personal favourite is Salties, right by the ferry terminal – great fish dishes. In the middle of the Solent, directly opposite the Bramble Bank and Southampton Water is Cowes. Home to the Royal Yacht Squadron and yacht racing for many, many years. Truly frenetic in the summer, especially at Cowes week, this is the dropping off point for people travelling across on the ferry from Southampton. Simply reeking of racing history and yachting, this is a definite Mecca for anyone who has the slightest interest in boating. For a night to remember though, you must go up the Medina

River to a fabulous place called the Folly Inn. Park your boat outside and walk into a warm and inviting environment, oozing with atmosphere. In fact, make your visit on a Saturday night and you will literally be singing along to the live music – try the ‘Crewpot’, it’s to die for. Portsmouth, Langstone and Chichester harbours are all next door to each other on the mainland coast. Naturally, being an historic dockyard, Portsmouth is by far the busiest. Cross Channel ferries, Royal Navy warships and all manner of pleasure craft ply their trades in this port. The Queen’s Harbour Master (QHM) keeps a watchful eye on all boat movements and you are well advised to contact QHM when entering the harbour or attempting to cross from one side to the other. Gunwharf Quay, easily spotted by the sky-scraping Spinnaker Tower, has shops and restaurants galore. If I remember correctly there are at least ten different restaurants within 2 minutes walk of the boat mooring. Next door to Portsmouth, Langstone Harbour is a conservation area. whole bay is normally peaceful and deserted. This is certainly a place to go if you like solitude and getting away from the crowds. Pick your anchorage with care and sit back to take in the wildlife spectacle. Imagine waking up in the morning after a night on the hook, to an uninterrupted view of nature; what could be better. Chichester harbour, like Langstone, is immense. Channels disappearing off in front of you, leading to small, quiet hidey-holes, surprisingly full of boats. The people who moor their boats here really like to relax away from the crowds. This harbour has so much variety that you almost don’t need to leave it to have hours of fun. Pick your entry and departure times though, as the bar at the entrance can make getting in and out of Chichester a little bumpy. Best avoided

if you can due to a fast spring ebb and a strong SW wind. If you are new to boating and want somewhere safe to learn or you’ve been boating for years and want somewhere easy to get to and full of variety the Solent is for you. This water truly has something for everyone. There are many books dedicated to the Solent. Books to guide you around the hazards, the marinas and those telling you about the history, but whatever you choose to read and whether you have a boat or not, make sure you get yourselves down to the water and find out first hand exactly what makes the Solent special for so many people. ealine have been involved with RYA events for the last ten years. The Sealine Sea School has provided invaluable support for the RYA Sealine Southern Motor Cruise with their instructors instrumental in the Cruise planning and assistance during the event.. RYA Sealine Motor cruises are designed to appeal to both the novice and experienced cruiser who would like to cruise in company or simply to cross the English Channel for the first time with the security of other boats around. Lead boats with experienced skippers accompany all cruises, offering advice should you need it, plus comprehensive cruise notes and regular briefings. A full social programme is always planned, but there is also enough time to explore or relax on your own... you do as little or much as you want! The biggest factors are that you are able to crusie in company with like minded people, make new friends and broaden your cruising

horizons but most of all have fun! For 2007, the RYA Sealine Southern Motor Cruise will be visiting the coast of Normandy. Starting from Poole Quay Boat Haven, we will cross the Channel to Cherbourg for one night, where there will be a reception sponsored by Alpine Electronics. The following day we cross the Seine Bay to the beautiful town of Honfleur. Following two days in Honfleur we will cruise through the ship lock at Oustrium and along the canal under the famous Pegasus Bridge and moor in Caen. Two days later we will head on to Carentan for a couple of days before returning to Cherbourg for a Black Tie BBQ, before the fleet disperses the following day. RYA Sealine Southern Motor Cruise Simon and Georgina Tillyer, along with their two children, joined the RYA Sealine Motor Cruise to take their boat Molly Rose across the Channel for the first time. “The RYA Sealine Motor Cruise from Poole to the Normandy ports of Cherbourg, St Vaast, Carentan, Caen and Honfleur was by far the most ambitious trip we had ever planned on our boat, which up until now had mainly been used for day trips and the odd overnight stay in the Solent and nearby ports.” “The cruise particularly suited us as it coincided with the school holidays and with two children aged nine and four we hoped that other young families would be on the cruise allowing the children to make new friends. When we arrived at Poole to register, the children wasted no time getting to know each other as they unpacked remote control boats, crab lines and fishing nets. By the time we attended the

evening reception we, as parents, felt that although we still had a few apprehensions about the trip, the children would be entertaining themselves.” “We’d imagined our first Channel crossing to be on mirror flat seas. Unfortunately, this was not the case but following the RYA grouping arrangements and skippers briefing by Sealine Sea School’s Yachtmaster Instrutor, Tim Pearce, we were confident of being looked after while still being on our own.” “Waypoints for the whole cruise were provided by the RYA team and passage start times agreed so any tricky tidal calculations were eliminated from the passage plan. Seastart were also accompanying us and many boats benefited from their advice, from simple checks to more involved work. Arrival in Cherbourg merited a wine reception and our RYA First Timers’ Cross Channel Certificate.” “For the children the highlight of Cherbourg was the shrimp and prawn fishing, with buckets lining the pontoon.” >>

“After a night in Cherbourg, we headed east to the fishing port of St Vaast and then, two days later, an early start in darkness took us to Carentan. As we entered the Carentan canal, one by one the boats disappeared into dense fog with barely 50 yards visibility. Our pity went to the poor yachtsman leaving the canal with 25 motor cruisers heading in his direction.” “Following a few days filled with BBQ’s, sightseeing, socialising and a visit to the local outdoor swimming pool, it was time to move on to Caen. As we left, the still morning was rounded off by the company of seals and jumping fish.” “By now locks, lift and swing bridges and boat handling were starting to get easier. Moored in the city centre we were warmly welcomed by the Harbour Master and later greeted at a civic reception by the Mayor.”

“Our last stop, Honfleur was fantastic; a place filled with unique character with breathtaking architecture and restaurants. Returning to our boat by dinghy in the darkness after an evening meal in this unique setting was simply magical and a memory that will stay with us for a long time. After two nights

in Honfleur we headed for home, again in less than ideal conditions but under the watchful eye of a group leader, somewhere out there in the fog, but still in radio contact.” “We found our first Channel crossing a great experience, although not always relaxing, with both adults and children making good friends. With the support of Sealine, Seastart and the RYA we felt in safe hands throughout the cruise and it has given us the confidence to change our future boating plans.’’ Sealine also support the RYA Spring and Autumn Musters which are normally held in Cowes, Isle of Wight. Here the Sealine Sea School runs masterclasses in boat handling to the attendees whether their choice of boating is sail or power. Shore power can’t handle everything at once. Moor the boat, plug into shore power and make some coffee. That’s no problem. The shore fuse is 6 amps and the coffee maker only needs 4. But then, without warning, the water heater turns on… Oops, suddenly there’s a total of 8 amps needed, the shore fuse blows and you’re without power. THE POWER OF INDEPENDENCE

W

hen you come home after a long day, you may well want to be able to put the kettle on, throw a load in the washing machine and switch on the TV; the last thing you think about is whether there’s enough electricity to go round. And you certainly wouldn’t put up with having to go and re-set the trip switches several times a day. So why would you put up with such a situation when you’re on board? Limited capacity shore supply means you either need to ration your use of power or run your generator. Using the air-conditioning then adds a whole other dimension where the start up current is often too much for shore power regardless of anything else that may be on at the same time. When you start to look at how power gets used a pattern of long periods of modest power use mixed with very short periods of high power consumption emerges. Watching the TV or listening to your favourite music with the fridge and freezer running in the background means modest power consumption – perhaps just a few hundred watts. Then you go and switch the kettle on and, for a few minutes whilst it boils, you’re using ten times as much at 3.5kW. The conventional power solution used on the majority of motor yachts is a collection of discrete components all of which live happily together but without integration. As far as mains power is concerned, you either use shore power or your generator or, if you have one, the inverter. But you are unable to make use of more than one source of power simultaneously. And then you have a substantial resource of reserve energy stored in the battery that, normally, you have no access to. So what if you could use anything you wanted, at any time of day, regardless of the capacity of your shore supply? Or perhaps you are planning to fit airconditioning but your generator is not big enough to cope and there’s no room for anything bigger. Drawing on decades of experience in the field of computer power protection, Victron Energy has pioneered a technology called power assist. This allows shore or generator power to be topped up at any instant by borrowing energy from the battery. When the peak in demand is passed and there is power to spare, what was taken from the battery is

then replaced. Power Assist is a feature specific to the MultiPlus range of inverter chargers. Power from the shore supply feeds through the unit and is used to charge the batteries whilst also feeding the other on-board consumers. As more power is demanded by the equipment on the boat, the charging function reduces to avoid tripping the mains. Now for the really clever but; if you require more power than shore supply is able to deliver then the unit draws form the battery, inverts the supply and provides the additional current needed. This might be to support the inrush demanded by air conditioning on start up or because the hair dryer has been switched on in addition to the entertainment system and the fridge freezer. The technology can be expanded for bigger applications on more luxuriously appointed vessels. More than one unit can be used together in combination with a modest generator to allow the use of a full electric galley with, for example, an induction hob, oven, microwave, laundry and more. A system with a 6kW generator and a pair of 3kW Multi Plus units can provide the starting power of an 18kW generator and the continuous power of a 12kW set. MultiPlus can be easily added to an existing vessel as a retro-fit or engineered as a central part of the system fitted to your new yacht.
