Dear movie lovers, Welcome to the second issue of Boom the Albuquerque Film Guide. All of us here at Miscellaneous Publications have learned so much about the movie industry over the last eight months. The first issue of boom was a real testament to what can happen if industry folks work together towards a common goal, that goal being letting the rest of the world know what Albuquerque and New Mexico have to offer the film industry as a whole...and it’s a lot.

ModMary USA Network’s In Plain Sight puts a slim blond with miles of personality in the driver’s seat by Ellen Berkovitch
You know what they say about TV acting: Don’t act, be yourself. The adage applies to marvelous Mary McCormack, the nimble actor spending long days shooting her starring role as Mary Shannon for season two of In Plain Sight. On this windy November afternoon, a low-pressure cloud wraps the Sandias, and the location is a house with fakebrick siding on a street with a willow tree. Shannon’s standing outside the front door of the house—she’s a witness protection U.S. marshal, the guy she’s come to see is a bridge engineer, played by Clark Peters (of The Wire). And she’s holding a big box of ribs. Yeah, ribs. McCormack—well, as she and her fellow actors wait for the take—she’s cracking them up with her German accent. “WWRRibs,” she chortles. “Pooork ribs.” And gnaws shark-like at the box. Everybody busts out laughing. The accent comes out of theater; where McCormack spent her summer vacation blond-bomb shelling it up in the farce, Boeing, Boeing on Broadway (she played a German stewardess, and was nominated for

a Tony award). But the comedic instinct is all natural. A couple of the crew wear Insane Plight hats, which McCormack points out to me conspiratorially. It took them a little while to notice her pun, when she presented hats at the start of shooting in October, since her gag version uses the exact In Plain Sight typeface. If Mary’s naturally so funny, well, so is her oft-wisecracking character—call it a heightened contrast with a high-stress job, her coping mechanism to toss a little juice. The real Mary McCormack, says the driven Mary Shannon fits her personality well—and she appreciates the proximity to “sit” in the part that way. They are both New Jersey girls—McCormack from Plainfield, and educated at Trinity College in Connecticut. Mary Shannon drives a muscle car Probe. “It’s funny,” says McCormack. “When I was…younger, I used to go to the L.A. skate club called ‘Probe’ and I went so often they called me ‘Probe Mary.’ Not many people know that story.” Shannon’s line of work, though, requires a total dedication to a job description that
is secretive and dangerous and, therefore, requires her to stay totally on top of it. It’s one of the hardest jobs in government, keeping the witness alive and his or her whereabouts secret. Shannon’s got a nose for trouble. And it sometimes requires acrobatics—having to leapfrog a flight of stairs in the jail, or breaking a high heel on a hillside. There’s New Mexico for you. “She’s a natural,” raves Charlie, the guy on set wearing the U.S. Marshal cap, whom Mary introduces to me as the show’s technical advisor. Except that, as McCormack explains a tad ruefully, In Plain Sight is one show where the technical advisor has to withhold information instead of the other way around! Since the worst outcome is to lose a witness (and the bad guys are always trying), McCormack can only pull so many details out of Charlie about how things would really be done. But it’s not for lack of effort. “She calls me every day with a question,” Charlie says. He’s taken her to pistol practice at the range and nods in strong approval of her technique. She wears two guns in the show, one at

THE LINE 01 And know ahead of the time that the lissome blond in a green tank top, with great skin, a genuine smile, and so down-toearth you almost want to pull her hair, is the star. She’s as happy to talk architecture, restaurants or politics as acting. And recites Spencer Tracy’s maxim: “Learn your lines and don’t bump into the furniture.” the ankle when she has to prove it. But technical advice aside, it is the fact that she so thoroughly inhabits the part—both as a personality and as a physical presence that lets her be her 5’8” broad shouldered self; that really delights her. “She’s really got a lot of onions,” McCormack says of Shannon. “She’s super tomboyish, really smart. Things that struck me as really unusual about David’s writing (creator David Staples) is she’s unapologetic about being grumpy, not particularly nice to people, doesn’t care how she’s perceived very much. Not much about her is ladylike or feminine, which I dig. It’s fantastic.” If the story line of a hard-edged career woman trying to wrangle the rogue inconsistencies of her own life into control is one that McCormack acknowledges a close “fit” with, she’s also openly celebratory of the way the part opens up not just a story of a real woman’s conflicts, minus the requirement to always come out a good girl.
6
BOOM: The Albuquerque Film Guide
Indeed, says McCormack, she thought the part had been written for “a boy” when she read the script. “I often hear people say, ‘I wish there were more strong characters for women.’ Maybe that’s an old-fashioned way of looking at it. I don’t need to play ‘strong.’” We’re just after ‘complex.’ Someone can be a good person and make a bad decision. Women don’t always have to be the moral center of the piece.” That was the “go-to spot” for female characters for years, the star says. The trend line including, In Plain Sight and Holly Hunter’s show, The Closer, says McCormack, is encouraging, in that she sees so many more nuances now being written for women “I’m happy to be part of it.” Yet that it’s easier for Shannon to do well at work than in relationships is a recurrent thread of the show. Shannon’s chaotic home life includes the live-in roommates of her mother, Jinx (Lesley Ann Warren), who has mined some madcap antics from the British sitcom AbFab, and sister Brandi (Nicole Hiltz), who may have been doing meth last
season. Men haven’t been all that easy for Shannon either, despite an on-again offagain thing with Marshal (Fred Weller), who sits in the passenger seat to her driver. Indeed, in season one’s Hoosier Daddy, Shannon keeps having deep and meaningful conversation with the witness. “Finally find a guy I can talk to,” pause, “and he’s 10.” McCormack is in real life happily married, to a British producer. They have two preschool-age kids—and she really likes Albuquerque for the things it offers a family: zoo, aquarium, and restaurants. Taking kids to restaurants is terrifying she acknowledges, laughing with her hair-and-makeup crew who reassure her that the Church Street Café—just recommended for breakfast—has a large outdoor patio. “Copy that,” Mary says. “As long as it’s really large.” Husband Michael and Margaret and Rose, ages 4 and 18 months, live mostly in LA—in a modernist house designed by Rodney Walker for the engineer of the case-study houses. But “living in LA” is part urban legend, McCormack allows. “It’s where our suitcases live.” The kids spent plenty of time with Mom in Albuquerque and she says she’s glad they’re young enough “to not hate the set, hate airports.” And restaurant meals are almost besides the point for the 14-hour-day working life of Mary McCormack—though she does love to eat Saturday dinner at the Artichoke Café. Still, on the day I’m watching shooting, all I see her eat is, well, a Diet Coke. She’s in almost every scene, and even though she’s genuinely thrilled about having Clark Peters, the star of the show as her co-star in this episode, she’s worried about his jet lag and the shooting schedule that keeps them all hopping. “They had ten days (to shoot an episode of The Wire,” she tells Julie, her hairdresser. “Welcome to seven. Fasten up.” While at this early point in the season McCormack’s worried about revealing too much of season two’s plot turns, really today it’s the weather, the wind kicking up dust and slicing through jackets, that has cast and crew all talking about what outerwear they’ll need for tomorrow’s night location on a bridge near Belen. You’ll have to watch
the show, “Duplicate Bridge,” part of next season’s 16 episodes, for the explosives. And know ahead of the time that the lissome blond in a green tank top, with great skin, a genuine smile, and so down-to-earth you almost want to pull her hair, is the star. She’s as happy to talk architecture, restaurants or politics as acting. And recites Spencer Tracy’s maxim: “Learn your lines and don’t bump into the furniture.” “I’m really lucky to have a part I love,” McCormack says. And she’s also charged that with dreams come responsibilities. She’s working up a PSA, with a screenwriter friend, to try to get Prop 8 overturned and reinstate to gay couples in California the right to marry. She refers readers to a website called “sevenweekstoequality.com,” and says she doesn’t want her kids growing up to ask her why in the year Obama was elected president, voters in California were denied civil rights. She feels strongly about it, and even as she’s having her makeup applied (“you make mascara face even when I do it,” says Des, her makeup artist) she is texting on her blackberry and noting which prominent pals have answered the call: “Paul Rudd, she says. “Scott.” “Christine? Christine’s email came back. Do you have her address?” Hey, maybe Mary’s got something to say to the president-elect? Been there, done that. She was at a rally in Albuquerque hearing Barack Obama address the crowd a few days before the November 4th election. “He was honestly just walking by on his way out and he recognized me from the West Wing. He said, ‘Wait. You’re, you’re the national security advisor!’ ‘What do you know about national security?’ the soon-to-be-president-elect asked Mary. “I said, ‘not a thing.’ He said, ‘you fake it really well.’ My husband was behind me taking a picture. We have a photograph of me and Barack just pointing at each other.” “Funny thing,” McCormack muses with a small appreciative laugh, “that he’s just getting around to watching West Wing reruns now!”

BOOM: The Albuquerque Film Guide
THE LINE 02 A Quick Study by Hakim Bellamy
I don’t know about you? But I have often wished that I was born in another country, you know instead of New Jersey. However, when you grow up going to a high school where everyone talks like Rocky Balboa or Tony Soprano, it is easy to become enchanted with foreign accents. Had I been privy to more disposabe income in my high school years, I would have secured the services of a dialect coach. Why? Two reasons. First, because I wished I was the heart throb Hungarian hunk on the tennis team who had any prom date he wanted from the first “Sziasztok” (“Hello”). Second, because I had a crush on every young lady with an accent in my school, (and they all had crushes on the Hungarian hunk for the very same reason I found them so intriguing). Albuquerque dialect coach, Steve Corona, might argue that there are more functional reasons for employing a dialect coach than salvaging one teenager’s love life. “The most common situation I’ve experienced where someone needed my dialect coaching services has been a foreign actor needing to speak with an American accent. I’ve also worked with American actors on learning a variety of foreign accents.” Steve said actors typically approach him wanting to work on an accent for an audition or for a role they’ve already been cast in. Actors interested in adding more weapons to their arsenal, often aim to get a few more dialects under their belt so they are prepared, should the situation arise. An instant resume bump, Steve said, “The ability to add a dialect to an already strong performance gives actors a big advantage
over those who can’t, and I always encourage actors to keep learning and adding to their skills.” Leading by example, Steve was an actor first and a dialect student, second. After training in different dialects for a year, Steve recognized that he could use that knowledge to teach other actors, but admits that becoming a dialect coach was not his initial intent. When asked if formal training was a mandatory requirement for the job, Steve placed more of an emphasis on the amount of time devoted to learning different dialects and explained that it helps if you have ‘an ear’ for it, or like Steve, if you can naturally hear the subtle nuances of accents. However, what helps for learning dialects, does not necessarily translate to what is effective for teaching dialects. “Dialect coaching is all about listening. If you can hear specific sounds an actor might not be getting in a dialect, it’s easy enough to then work on those specific sounds. The hard part comes in finding an effective way to communicate to each individual actor the way to correct and perfect the dialect. Each actor works differently and some are more sensitive than others, so you have to be able to figure out which approach is going to get through to the actor you’re working with, without frustrating them or turning them off.” Corona finds that the best way to work is by offering encouragement, positive feedback and repetition where necessary. While I can only dream about putting some “sexy” in my voice, Corona’s resume is rich with well-known clientele, including, Gerard Butler (300) and Helen Mirren (The Queen) to name a few of his satisfied clients. Steve defined his fortune as “lucky” when Gerard Butler hired him after firing his initial dialect coach for the filming of Game in Albuquerque. Corona and Butler worked so well together that Butler called director Taylor Hackford
(Ray) with a recommendation. Apparently, Corona interviewed very well and ended up as Mirren’s dialect coach in the yet to be released film Love Ranch. During his time on set at “the Ranch”, Corona also worked an Argentine English accent with Spanish actor, Sergio Peris Menchetta. Even though he wasn’t technically assigned, Corona did get to talk a little bit with Joe Pesci on Love Ranch as well. Corona would not be baited into giving up the goods on who is, and is not a quick dialect study in Hollywood. In his eyes, it is less about whether the stars can pick up a dialect, and more about how they pick up a dialect. There is not an abundance of time to figure it out, and there are “dollars per day” riding on it. It is the style of learning that Steve is charged with figuring out, and after he solves that riddle he becomes a trainer whose job it is to encourage, correct and do reps (repetitions). Of Mirren and Butler, Corona explained, “Well, the stars are where they are for a reason; they’re well-trained with plenty of experience so they know what they need to do and which way of learning works best for them in the least amount of time. Gerard was good at repeating the lines in the accent until they stuck in his head and didn’t have to think about it anymore. We didn’t have a whole lot of extra time to work on the accent, so he had to be quick at picking it up on set. Helen preferred to do homework and delve into the dialect as thoroughly as possible. She was just as fast at learning the dialect, but wanted to make sure she was completely comfortable with it before stepping on set.” Though I’m still a sucker for an accent and a smile, it seems that I am the foreigner in my new hometown. My South Jersey accent is not as pronounced as some of my northern neighbors in the Garden State, but to my neighbors in the North Valley of Albuquerque, let’s just say my “Spanglish”
has much to be desired. Steve gets to hang out on set with all the “cool kids”, joke with Gerard Butler in a Scottish accent to make the foreign born star feel at home. Maybe there is a future in dialect coaching for me? I advised Steve that I do a great, fake Tom Brokaw. Without the time intensive training that dialect coaching requires, Steve said I could easily get into voiceover work, something Steve also does. “There are a number of websites you can sign up with where you can audition for various voiceover projects. These websites can be a great way to gain exposure and build your experience. Also, you might consider listening to commercials, transcribing them, and then recording them with your voice for some good practice. Once you have enough good quality recordings put together, you can send them out to local TV and radio stations.” Try as I might, I could not get Steve to divulge the blueprints for his success as a dialect coach and voiceover talent. Primarily because he chalks his success up to “good luck, good timing, good references, and hard work.” Steve did offer that he is one of a few dialect coaches in the entire state, which I am sure increases his demand, which in turn increases opportunities to train in various dialects, making him more and more of a commodity as Hollywood continues to descend on Albuquerque en masse. Though I wear my Jersey accent as more of a “kick me” sign than an aphrodisiac in this part of the country, every “good” movie needs at least one faux New York accent. I’m sure with the help of Steve Corona I can channel my inner Danny DeVito. Who also happens to be from “Joizey”. Call Steve Corona, dialect coach to the stars (505)306-8524 or e-mail at steve.corona@hotmail.com.

Cast Away by Ben Ikenson
In a World War II film, you’ll probably never see Normandy beach-storming soldiers attired in the latest Abercrombie and Fitch sweater vest line. Nor would you likely observe the emaciated figures of death camp prisoners in, say, a movie chronicling the antics of college kids gone wild on spring break. As Elizabeth Gabel says, “You don’t want a Picasso background with a Monet foreground.” Gabel, who owns an Albuquerque-based casting company, well knows that when it comes to matching background with foreground on screen, the endeavor requires more than a mere passing eye to the most obvious of aesthetic incongruities. “It is important to consider the look of a crowd,” says Gabel. “In the Taylor Hackford movie Love Ranch, we wanted a boxing crowd from the late 70’s which meant longer hair, or in a western like 3:10 to Yuma, we didn’t want long hair even though the common perception is that there was long hair in the old west. There wasn’t. In Terminator Salvation, we used real women fire fighters who weren’t intimidated by explosions. We also used amputees to communicate the horrors of war. There is an art to selling a scene to make it look convincing.”
11 11
BOOM: BOOM: The The Albuquerque Albuquerque Film Film Guide Guide
For years, Gabel has been honing this art, working with producers and directors and casting thousands of extras for box-office films. With the tagline for the HBO hit series Extras starring Ricky Gervais that goes, “the story of a man with small parts,” the tag for Gabel’s own personal narrative could be, “the story of a woman who handles many with small parts.” As an extras casting director, her hand has been in the making of movies that range from Employee of the Month to the Oscar awardwinning No Country for Old Men. Currently, she is working for the forthcoming Men Who Stare at Goats, starring George Clooney, which is based on a true story about an Army unit commissioned to use paranormal powers in the Iraq war. Of the film industry in New Mexico, Gabel says it’s imperative for the state to maintain its incentive program. Gabel’s office—or, rather, her temporary work space—is no exception. Gabel, who usually works from one film casting job to the next with no down time, typically sets up shop near wardrobe and production, which helps her coordinate her efforts with these. In this case, it’s a low-rent, nondescript industrial park off of Broadway, void of the glamorous sheen of success that her credits might otherwise suggest. It’s
immediately clear to Gabel’s visitors that there’s not much time for kicking back and she doesn’t rest on her laurels. “I am on set early, in the dark and cold, checking extras in at four in the morning or at ten at night, Gabel says. “I spend the rest of the day on three phones, calling, answering questions, consoling sick people or people who have just had a loss in the family. I hear about accidents and fights with the spouses and about the kids’ latest escapades. I thrive on it, I love it—it drives me through the day like a train that never reaches its destination.” Locomotion certainly describes the momentum of Gabel’s work. Along with assistant casting director and photographer Lorie Latham, Gabel maintains photo files of thousands of prospective extras here, often derived from public casting calls. With this as her primary database, she will select a few photos to share with the directors for more prominent background roles – those with small speaking parts or with more “face time” during scenes. “It’s completely intuitive,” says Gabel. “I’ll go through hundreds of photos just to come up with three or so that, to me, fit the look we’re trying for”
Of course, Gabel does her homework, reading each script before even accepting a job. Often, she’ll make arrangements for open casting calls which can create for a busy day with thousands of people waiting to have their photos taken. Busier still is when Gabel’s work involves managing a large background cast. “We had three people to oversee 2,700 extras for the election scene in Swing Vote and 1,500 extras for Love Ranch.” It’s a labor of love for Gabel, who got her start in casting extras somewhat circuitously. She’d been writing her own film scripts, but, like so many others, found that the cost of producing her ideas was prohibitive. (The advent of digital filmmaking excites her: “There are a lot of Coen brothers out there who have yet to be discovered,” she says.) An ardent admirer of film, she found herself becoming frustrated with poorly-cast films. As a professional photographer with an eye for people, she began directing her strengths into casting. “I love to look at faces,” says Gabel. “Each one tells an amazing story and casting comes out of that love as I try to place faces in the right environment.”

The sisters Kimhang and Kimha (hence, Kim’s) emigrated to Albuquerque from France in 1998 and brought their mother over in 2003. This intimate, whimsically decorated family-owned restaurant is heavily French-influenced, but retains the delectable specialties of their ancestral homeland. Dishes such as the white asparagus and crab soup, coconut braised chicken, the pho served with piles of fresh herbs, and the banhi mi’s (Vietnamese sandwiches served on crusty French baguettes), along with the pastry case brimming with mostly French desserts have set Kim’s apart from the myriad of other Vietnamese restaurants in Albuquerque.

From the outside, it might seems like Powdrell’s BBQ has been shut down for years, but on the inside it’s bustling with folks who want to feed you some “I am not at all concerned about my cholesterol level and to hell with all this high falutin’ health food and organic yada yada. I’m gonna get me some meat with a slather of mac n’ cheese and I’m gonna like it.” EMT standing by is optional.

Many restaurants taut “home style cookin’”, but the Wild West Café is actually owned and operated by a real live Mom, who created the menu and does the majority of the cooking. Leslie Markham started making barbeque sauces thirty years ago and is now captain and commander of this family affair (along with her son, daughter-in-law and husband) where cowboy campfire food such as bbq beef brisket, pulled pork or sausage and biscuits meets New Mexican classics.
Almost Gourmet This is slowly cooked, Southern-style soul food that Albuquerque has never seen the likes of. The barbecue brisket, smothered pork chops, black-eyed peas and collard greens are just a few of the Southern favorites made by hand. Recently transitioned from just a catering business to a sit-in restaurant, Almost Gourmet is owned by Texan Genice Monroe and her son, Errol, who are cooking dishes straight from the family cookbook including a pig’s feet dinner with fried okra or the shrimp po’ boy with fries. La Quiche Parisienne Bistro Baked goods are such blissful comfort food. Master Baker and proprietor Bruno Barachin awakens at 2 a.m. to bake some amazing croissants and breads that make you just want to swaddle yourself in them. Co-owner Sabin Pasco, who is in charge of all the pastries, creates sweets that aren’t cloyingly sweet (such as chocolate ganache or creamy lemon tart) and the quiche is like eggs gone to heaven. Overall, it is wonderful, simple, French countryside food.
Rio Grande Flying Star The Flying Star franchise, and its outpost Satellite, can be found all around town, but the Rio Grande location has a singular feature that sets it apart for winter coze. The roaring fireplace and twinkly lights on its patio provide for a delightful setting to take pleasure in a piece of pecan pie, pumpkin cheesecake or cranberry snow cake with a glass of wine or many of their specialty coffee beverages.
Farina Pizzeria & Wine Bar Farina (which is milled wheat germ, or semolina, used to dust the pizza crust) knows itself well. Avoiding the “everything kind of tastes the same” bane of many a pizzeria joint, Farina offers distinctive and inexpensive options. Pizzas such as the margherita ($9) and the fungi ($13) grace the menu along with more unusual offerings such as the formaggio della capra (goat cheese with leeks, scallions and pancetta $12) or the pepe caldo (spicy pizza with broccollini, ricotta and caciocavallo cheeses $12). And n’er a bottle of wine over $30.

Burt’s Tiki

I love a surly bartender almost as much as I love a strong, cheap drink. Add a couple games of pool on well worn tables and Patsy Cline to Pantera on the jukebox, and you’ve got yourself a rockin’ night at one of the few dive bars in Albuquerque that’s not too scary to enter.
Burt’s Tiki Lounge is about as cheeky as Albuquerque gets (and not just because it rhymes). There’s almost always something sweaty going on on the dance floor, and as it has a popularity that borders on cult following, it’s good to get there about 15 minutes pre-cool to get a round of PBR and snag one of those tucked away, slightly elevated leopard print booths.
A northeast heights local staple, pool tables, lots of TV’s and really good food. Horse and Angel delivers on all fronts; blue collar to pinstripes you will find them all here. From nachos, to a great steak and everything in between. There’s no shortage of great looking waitresses and bartenders and the drinks aren’t bad either.
Two Fools
If only all such foolish adventures could be so enticing. Plank by plank, the bar was imported from Dublin, to truly keep the “craic” (a Gaelic term that refers to the lively essence of the pub experience) mighty whilst you nestle up by the cobblestone fireplace and enjoy the best Guinness tap in town, a few Scotch Eggs (hardboiled egg wrapped in sausage and bread crumbs) or a cup of Guinness stew to ease the passing of winter.
Marble is the kind of brewpub you visit to have a few beers and chillax. It’s a place to settle all bets on who in your group of chums is the best domino player. It’s a place that’s comfortable, cozy and warm—kind of like your place if you knew how to brew a damn good beer. Right now, there are stronger, maltier winter ales brewing and aging in bourbon casks. ©Cristal Jones

Albuquerque’s Best Kept Open Secret: the NMSO by Bill Nevins
Ryan Stark is proud of New Mexico as a creative arts center, particularly so in the state’s current film making renaissance. And he is indeed proud of the active role that his employer, the New Mexico Symphony Orchestra (NMSO) continues to play here in Albuquerque. Stark, the NMSO’s Associate Marketing and PR Director, tells Boom, “We have people coming here from New York, Philadelphia, San Francisco and other great cities who tell us they visited or moved here to work in films and they did not expect very much from our local orchestra but they took a chance on a concert and were pleasantly surprised. They discovered New Mexico’s best kept secret–that the NMSO is one of the preeminent orchestras in the USA!” Ryan Stark serves under NMSO CEO Eric Meyer. “New Mexico,” Stark says, “Has always attracted the highest quality artists, in painting, sculpture, literature, film and music; Albuquerque is a national center of music in terms of innovation and quality. Our orchestra is top-notch. Under the current leadership of Music Director Guillermo Figueroa, the NMSO is interested in breaking boundaries and expanding our focus creatively.” Stark goes on to cite recent NMSO projects that have focused on the connections between symphonic music and films. “In 2006, we did a series of film music concerts, including selections from the scores of Harry Potter, Star Trek and Lord of the Rings, “he recalls, adding that the current NMSO season focuses on works by a 19th century composer who has made a huge splash in the movies: Ludwig Van Beethoven. “Without Beethoven, you would not have had John Williams’s score for Star Wars,” asserts Ryan with a laugh, “And you would not have movies like Copying Beethoven and Immortal Beloved.” NMSO’s will host world-renowned pianists Awadagin Pratt and Orli Shaham on March 7, 2009 for Beethoven & Friends at Popejoy. For 76 years now, the NMSO has presented concerts to Albuquerque music lovers and its home base, UNM’s Popejoy Hall, and is “simply the finest concert facility in New Mexico”, according to Stark. The NMSO, Stark reminds us, also reaches out to the community to include regional and local composers and performers in NMSO presentations–such as mariachis and Albuquerque’s famed National Institute of Flamenco. “Our musicians cross the street back and forth all the time,” says Stark, noting that the edgy local chamber group Chatter consists of performing members of the NMSO and that NMSO cellist Felix Wurman has gained local fame as organizer of the popular Church of Beethoven Sunday morning concerts in Albuquerque’s Barelas neighborhood. Stark says he can easily imagine the NMSO working in future with popular local groups like gypsy-rockers Le Chat Lunatique, the Afro-Mexican folk band Los Jaraneros del Valle or some of the jazz combos who frequent Albuquerque’s Outpost Performance Space. Ryan Stark laments that a tightening economy can keep even an imaginatively creative institution like NMSO from doing everything it would like to do, but, he says, “We do have discussions about a surprising range of possible projects crossing into many genres and styles of music.” He adds, “We are always open to suggestions, and the NMSO will always be interested in receiving invitations to score for, perform in, and assist with films made here in New Mexico. We see film as part of our state’s overall creative growth and we certainly want to be part of it.” Everyone is hopeful that the music of the NMSO will reach the ears of the many moviemakers working in New Mexico. Certainly, they are most welcome to enjoy the wonders of “Albuquerque’s best kept secret”. www.nmso.org

Bad Ass Style by Wendy Aaker
Nikki Zabicki is a creator of beautiful shiny things. Anyone who has a Nikki Zabicki original knows this to be true. Her precious paintings, 2” x 3” acrylic wonders, painted on natural fiber papers, adhered to sturdy steel buckles, and coated with bar top resin are selling like wearable hot cakes, because Nikki’s got something here that other people really want. You haven’t seen Nikki Zabicki buckles at Kitson, yet, but don’t be shocked when they arrive in L.A. “Painting has always been my skill. I went to school at the University of New Mexico for a studio art degree, but I didn’t finish and until I started making belt buckles, I never finished a painting. I got the idea for the buckles as a three-year relationship was ending.” As some things end, others begin. Zabicki spent a year living at her mother’s house in Belen after the break-up, messing around and experimenting with tons of different materials. “The smaller format of the buckle allowed me to actually finish a painting; it took me about a year to come up with the concept and all of the right materials.”

I ask Nikki why she chose belt buckles and her face lights up. “I just love belt buckles and I really like the idea of making wearable art. It’s like you have a vision, but you don’t know you have the vision until you’ve found it. I think my buckles really test the boundaries of space.” And they do. It ‘s hard to believe that so much life, light, and color can emanate from such a small space, but it does and that’s why they sell. Nikki Zabicki is painting what she loves. “I paint my heart these days and I have to try really hard to find that, but I’m not going to be ok with just getting them done; I feel like I have to take it to another level. Nikki is spending three to four hours on every buckle.
buckles and we’d sell them all.” She sold her first buckle to the Nob Hill hipster boutique, Toad Road after the owners had seen a friend of hers wearing one. Nikki describes her friend Jen as having a totally bad-ass style. “Jen is kind of my muse. A lot of the girls on the buckles look like her and people always want to wear what she is wearing. Today, Toad Road is buying 30 buckles every two weeks.
When someone wears one of her belt buckles, it is the only thing you see. “They really pop, she says. I think you can see my pieces from the top of the tallest building.” And you can.
True to her word, it is apparent how devoted Nikki’s friends are to her. Midway through our interview, her friend Mary Jane shows up and sits down to have some coffee with us. Mary Jane is studying art history and starts talking about something called Horror Vacui, an artistic theory that examines a fear of empty spaces. She says, “I was thinking that Nikki could fit into this category.” Nikki is immediately intrigued and identifies with the concept.
Like her buckles, Nikki has a magnetic quality and friends have played an important role in her development as an artist and a human being. “We used to just show up at restaurants and bars with a giant bag of
“It’s all or nothing with me. I’ve been noticing that more and more there’s less and less paper showing on the paintings and I think, yeah, I really do have a fear of empty spaces.” My house looks like that. If I had

tattoos—and most people are surprised that I don’t—my body would be covered. Nikki’s buckles have a magical, whimsical quality. “I love painting women and girls, and boobs and hair with flowers and birds, oh, and skulls. I think I may have some contemporary New Mexican folk influences. I know there’s this whole adobe and turquoise thing going on here, but I am really influenced by tattoo artists. There’s a lot of young tattoo artists here who are really talented who just don’t get enough recognition.” Word of Nikki’s belt buckles spreads with every purchase. These twinkly gems can be found at Masks Y Mas, Toad Road, Maya in Santa Fe, online at nikkizabicki.com and the Beach Zone is carrying two Nikki Zabicki designs on skateboards. To own a Nikki Zabicki belt buckle is to catch this energetic, love fever for all things shiny, soulful and lovely. I sleep with mine under my pillow. www.nikkizabicki.com

unil Pai, M.D. tells a good story. The young doctor’s dark eyes flash as he recounts the legend of Ram, that warrior prince beloved by every school kid in India, who sent his sidekick Huneman to climb the mighty Himalayas and find a magic herb that could save the life of Ram’s dying younger brother Lakshman, wounded in battle. Huneman couldn’t find the herb, but knew it must be hidden in the mountain. So he did
medical school, Dr. Pai decided to focus his own healing ambitions in a long-term project named in honor of that divinely curative herb, Sanjevani. Thus, the Sanjevani Integrative Medicine and Lifestyle Center began serving our New Mexico community in August 2007 from its offices nestled comfortably off Wyoming near Paseo Del Norte in Albuquerque’s Northeast Heights.

what any true pal would do. He hoisted a whole mountain up on his shoulders and hauled it back to Prince Ram. No biggie when you’re a super-yogi; Huneman was one of those.
Recently I spent a late fall afternoon at the Sanjevani Center and experienced first-hand some of the applications of oils, light, touch and entrancing music which are among the exhilarating and rejuvenating healing techniques offered there. It was a really delightful session, and even more intriguing was the rolling conversation I enjoyed with the Center’s codirectors, Dr. Pai and Maureen Sutton.
“alternative” medicine and its practitioners. But, like Prince Ram’s brave Huneman, Sunil Pai was no quitter. He finished medical school, published a ground- breaking essay on herbal healing which was highly praised in British medical journals, and completed his residency at UNM Hospital. Subsequently, Dr. Pai studied under both Andrew Weil and Deepak Chopra, two famously revered advocates and practitioners of integrative and alternative medicine.
Ram scooped up the magic herb from the mountain, along with some hillbilly vaidyas (traditional healers) who came along for the ride, bearing their knowledge with them. Little brother Lakshman was saved and Ram’s epic story, The Ramayana became one told down all the ages. Sunil Pai heard it first from his Indian grandparents in the kitchen of the New Mexico home they shared with Sunil, his mom and his father, who was himself southern New Mexico’s first eye ears nose and throat doctor. And what was the name of that wondrous herb, you may ask? Sanjevani, the “herb of life”! That story so stirred the child Sunil Pai while he was growing up in Las Cruces, New Mexico that when, at his dad’s insistence, he finished

Dr. Pai explains that the concept of the Sanjevani Center grew out his own post-high school odyssey of wandering the length and breadth of India in search of his ancestral “roots” and the foundations of the ancient ayurvedic healing traditions and techniques to which both his Western-trained father and his yogi grandfather often had referred with respect. Dr. Pai discovered, to his delight, that both ayurvedic and Western medicine were practiced side by side in India’s cities and villages, and that doctors of both traditions
Dr. Pai determined to try his best to carry the “mountain” of Indian healing knowledge, and the eclectic integrative approach he discovered on his journeys back home to America. This proved a daunting task, as the American medical establishment of the mid 1990s was not exactly bubbling over with enthusiasm for
Maureen Sutton, now co-director of the Sanjevani Center and a skilled multi-technique therapist, met Dr. Pai when both worked at the Chopra Center in California. Together with their staff of a half dozen specialized therapists, they have developed an innovative and comprehensive program of individually fine tuned assessment and therapy, utilizing their own and carefully selected herbal tincture treatments as well as massage,
acupuncture, aromatherapy, sound therapy, yoga, hypnotherapy, “oriental” medicine and other techniques, including prescription of pharmaceuticals when necessary. “Everything used has to be safe and effective,” says Dr. Pai with evident professional pride, adding, “Everything here is evidence-based in worldwide literature.” Sutton adds that besides carefully designed and planned individual treatments, the Sanjevani Center also offers
movement therapy sessions such as yoga, qi-gong and tai-chi classes, as well as regularly scheduled health education seminars and poetry gatherings. “And,” she continues, “We can fine tune each person’s treatment constantly, because each room in our Center is equipped with new iMacs holding in-house electronic medical records for each patient.” We chat about how the Sanjevani Center’s healing could be of great benefit to people engaged in demanding careers–ranging from the movie industry to the practice of law to just folks working hard to get along in our economically hard-bitten times. All that plus soothing music and eye-capturing art works drawn from varied ancient cultures gracing every wall of the Sanjevani Center, and a beautiful carving of The Wheel of Life in the waiting room. The Sanjevani Center is truly a relaxing, inspirational, and healing place to be. www.sanjevani.net

{move:ski/board} Adrenalin Junkie by Bill Nevens
So, where to ski and snowboard in New Mexico, a state seemingly more flat desert than sharp slopes? Well, surprise! We’ve got some of the finest ski mountains in the country. Expectations for 2008-09 are high as all the resorts prepare to open this winter. Here are a few of New Mexico’s fine downhill ski/snowboard destinations: Ski Santa Fe, high in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains just 16 miles from Santa Fe Plaza, has a base area elevation of 10,350 feet—one of the highest ski areas in the continental United States, with chairlifts climbing to12,075-feet, offering unsurpassed vistas and steep bump runs, powder filled chutes and gladed tree-skiing. Sandia Peak Ski Area, only a 45 minute drive from the Albuquerque Metro area, is easily accessible via the world famous Sandia Tram and is fully equipped with a certified snow sports school, a complete rental shop, skiers’ cafe, and plenty of fine cross-country skiing and snowshoeing to be had in the nearby woods. Sandia Peak opens in mid-December. Pajarito Mountain, on the east slopes of the Jemez Mountains above Los Alamos, has 40 trails on 300 skiable acres, 1200-foot vertical, five chair lifts and one surface lift, with miles of groomed trails, great bumps, tree skiing, a terrain park, and short lift lines. Red River Ski Area, which celebrates its 50th anniversary this season, is family friendly and convenient, with ninety percent of the lodging within walking distance from the slopes.

Downhill skiing is not easily forgotten, nor is snowboarding, skiing’s younger cousin. You’re hooked and you love it. You can move away from the mountains to work in films or other pursuits, but these winter sports stay with you.
Taos Ski Valley, founded in 1955 by Ernie and Rhoda Blake, remains one of the few family owned and operated ski resorts in North America, still run by the founders’ children and grandchildren. Taos Ski Valley is famed for the unique people it attracts to its slopes. A long-time Taos fan, Maeve Nevins, a landscape architect and accomplished extreme downhill ski racer (who also happens to be this reporter’s daughter). Maeve has lived in, hiked and skied the Colorado Rockies for decades, having she cut her extreme skiing teeth on the icy slopes of New Hampshire’s Mount Washington. Maeve Nevins comments on New Mexico skiing as follows: “Skiing in NM is humble in attitude and wealthy in terrain. Taos and the backcountry in that area have a plethora of steep lines with lots of exposure to fill any adrenalin junkie’s back pocket. Some of the world’s best extreme competitors have gotten their start in New Mexico, including the famous heli ski operation owner Dean Cummings. The terrain in the high country of New Mexico is filled with secret stashes of powder, cliff drops and clean tree line skiing. I also think Taos is good because the little kids can watch the big kids ski the steeps and learn how to decipher a clean line through cliffs, trees and safe landing zones. The people that run the resort services are very friendly and down to earth. The Taos après scene includes hot springs rather than hot tubs, and a natural setting that screams authentic rather than imported.”
“While the glamour may not be obvious, the hospitality is first class in a New Mexico ski vacation,” Maeve concludes,” Most of the resorts of Colorado have been redone to represent something from Europe, but in New Mexico you get authenticity on all levels. I like to think of New Mexico as a secret stash.” Looking for less of a challenge in your skiing and snowboarding? Head 30 minutes east from Taos to Angel Fire. The abundance of beginner and intermediate trails are ideal for those wanting to take it easy. The resort tends to attract younger attitudes and keeps the boarders happy with sound systems under the lifts pumping out music to the trails and terrain parks. However you find your winter outdoor fun—from extreme racing to laid back boarding—you can find it on the surprising snowy slopes of New Mexico.

he road you should take to Madrid if you have the time isn’t called the High Road for nothing. And why go to Madrid while visiting Albuquerque? Because a curious day of shopping, eating and culture peeks out from under the hat of this funny little town. The High Road, also known as the Turquoise Trail, just a short drive from Albuquerque is a scenic treat that is a visual adventure on its own, or can be a refreshing alternative route to Santa Fe, but be sure to stop in Madrid on the way. Named after the turquoise deposits commercially mined in the area’s Cerrillos Hills since the late 1800’s, the Turquoise Trail, or NM14 as it is marked, travels north from I-40 through a varied landscape: first up through the alpine-like town of Cedar Crest, past Golden—the site of the first gold rush west of the Mississippi—out onto the gently rolling, piñon and juniper spotted desert, with magnificent views of the mountains off to the north east. Nestled in a canyon at the foot of the Ortiz Mountains, the strange and delightful Madrid looks like a work in progress— and it is. Old hippies rub shoulders with weekend warrior Harley riders, and the occasional bearded, dusty, prospectortype can be spotted sipping coffee. All of them enjoying the laid-back ambience of Madrid—a town which could itself easily be an extra in a Wild West film. Founded in the late 1800s as a coal mining company town, Madrid was famous for its unique fields of hard and soft coals, and later for its progressive social experiment as a model mining town whose Employee’s Club put on community

Stop by Java Junction for a caffeinated pick-me-up and marvel at their huge inventory of “hot” gourmet items, especially the sauces ranging from “Hemorrhoid Helper” to “Toxic Waste” to… well you get the idea! For the faint of intestine, try the milder “Strawberry Hot Sauce”. If you’re already in love with Madrid and feel like staying overnight, the Java Junction offers a quaint, beautifully restored B&B room right above the café in the heart of the Madrid-style action.
As you enter the town beware of vigilant police enforcing the low speed limit. The best way to experience Madrid is on foot, so find a parking spot—no quarters required—and saunter off along the main street.
In the renovated old mine offices across the street you’ll find the Painted Horse Gallery exhibiting the work of husband and wife team Dean Dovey and Sue Van Dame. Dean’s oil paintings of contemporary landscapes are hauntingly restful, and Sue’s silver jewelry incorporating natural stones is intricate and quietly modern.
At the south end of town you’ll find one of the oldest galleries in Madrid. Fiber artist, Diana Johnson, and her husband Mel, a visual artist, opened Johnsons of Madrid in 1973. Their warren of gallery rooms exhibit over 150 Northern New Mexico artists and has a fiber arts room full of beautiful, handmade clothes, scarves, and hats. Johnsons of Madrid’s “First Saturday” afternoons open with a music performance in one of the gallery spaces, followed by an artists’ reception. Across the road you can learn more about the town’s history at the Old Coal Mine Museum, filled with the paraphernalia of mining, a steam engine, and all kinds of antiques. Part of the same building, once an old railway structure, houses the comfortable and intimate Engine House Theatre, a purplecurtained, foot-lighted stage with seats for 135. Check out their Film Night Fridays for an eclectic assortment of shorts, B movies, and documentaries, often from local filmmakers.
Further up the street several shops and galleries are elevated on a boardwalk. Take a look in Jezebel, a mix of gallery, sculpture garden and old-fashioned soda fountain. Yes, there really is a Jezebel, and she makes the most beautiful chandeliers and organic-form-inspired rolled glasswork. What shopping expedition in the Southwest could be complete without purchasing a pair of cowboy boots or hat? At Cowgirl Red you’ll find a plethora of cowboy (and girl) retro ephemera, most noticeably a fine range of vintage cowboy boots; a good place to get your boot on. If you’re hungry for lunch, the Ghost Town Kitchen, otherwise known as the No Pity Café, is a great choice. Have a seat in the clean, contemporary dining room where pot roast and pasta are listed alongside New Mexico favorites. Don’t miss the taste-treat

events including the Fourth of July parade and a renowned Christmas light display. On the registry of New Mexico’s 400 plus ghost towns, Madrid’s mines were closed in the early 50s and the neglected town fell into disrepair. In the 70s, Joe Huber, who owned the entire town, wanted to revive the character of Madrid. He began to rent cabins and houses to artists and craftspeople, and the town started its quiet metamorphosis into a quirky little art town.
of the red chile chocolate cake to fuel the rest of your Madrid experience. Across the street Weasel and Fitz, “Purveyors of Curious Thangs”, focus on recycled art and local folk art. Lampshades made from license plates, beer bottle top earrings, and retablos jostle for space beside old motorcycle helmets re-fashioned into attractively grotesque sculptural animals. Madrid has over 30 galleries: you’ll find angels at Heaven Boutique, Cerrillos turquoise—surprisingly white, pale green, and jade green—at The Great Madrid Gift Emporium which boasts the “cheapest silver west of the Pecos”, interesting mixed media contemporary works at Metallo Gallery, and Warholesque paintings at Paul Olsen Gallery. As you wind your way back to your car you’ll probably be ready for some dinner. The Mine Shaft Tavern first opened its doors in 1946, and from the 40-foot lodge pole pine bar, to the eclectic furnishings, you’ll notice that nothing much has changed since then. In the parking lot, Harley Davidson motorcycles often outnumber cars, and inside there’s always a toe tapping band to listen to on the weekends. The Mine Shaft is equally renowned for its buffalo burgers and hand-cut French fries, as for its great people watching. So grab a table, kick back, and fuel up on good grub for the journey either back to Albuquerque, or on another 23 miles into Santa Fe.

t the age of three, Jessica Retskin, owner of Shag, an exclusive hair salon in Nob Hill was cutting her dog’s hair and by the age of five had her first real client. “My grandmother gave me a pair of paper cutting scissors and asked me to cut off the back of her mullet. And when I was finished, she was convinced that this was the best haircut she’d ever had,” explains Retskin when we meet for coffee on the first day of December. Retskin is tall, stylish and unapologetically a natural red head. She shows up to the interview dressed in all black, sporting shoes from Holland, whose tips point upward to her face and hair. While some people wait their entire lives to discover what it is they want to do with their lives, Retskin has always known she wanted to style hair. She had her first job in a salon in Alexandria, Virginia at the age of 15. While she started as a shampoo girl, she worked every aspect of salon life in seven different salons on the East Coast before landing in Albuquerque. Learning both the front end and the back end of the house in salons as a personal assistant to stylists whose client lists included the Kennedy’s, Maria Shriver, The Jackson Five, and believe it or not…Wonderwoman, prepared Retskin for owning her own salon, Shag, which opened its doors in 2005. promotion representative for Armstrong McCal. Her travel life during this time included fashion shows and parties in L.A., Phoenix, and New York. After seven years in the industry without any formal training through positions as manager, personal assistant and apprentice, Retskin decided to go to beauty school in Albuquerque. “ I went to strip mall beauty school and graduated magna cum laude,” she laughs. Her first job as a stylist was at Josephs in Albuquerque and then at Chez D’Or. After 8 years she decided to open her own salon. “The day I opened my doors I was booked solid for four months and have been booked four months in advance ever since.” When I ask Jessica why her clients are willing to sign up for a waiting list, she is clear and explains that her clients trust her implicitly. “If you say that you only want an inch taken off, you can measure the cuttings on the floor and that is exactly what you will find.” Retskin started her own salon to offer the highest level of hair care and a unique styling experience. Her studio, which is located in Nob Hill, inside Aqui, a high-end women’s and children’s boutique has no sign and a private entrance for clients who are concerned about privacy. It is a single chair boutique and when you call to make an appointment you talk to Jessica. She uses all natural products with wheat,

oat, corn and coconut polymers, all Purology products. She has recently started carrying Moroccan Miracle Oil, which she imports from Israel, via a distributor in Denver; she describes the oil as truly a miracle product that adds moisture, luster and speeds styling time. Retskin, whose own beautiful hair falls in ringlets framing her face, considers herself a curly hair specialist and explains that she is fond of releasing a client’s inner curl. Clients who come to her for her specialty are called curly girls. She also considers herself an expert in color correction. I love it when someone comes into see me who has been over processed. I like having the opportunity to transform damaged hair.” Her goal is that everyone who comes to see her feels great about their hair. “Having great hair can really turn your day around.” Because Shag is a single chair studio, it just the stylist and the client. Retskin takes extra time to insure that her clients feel listened to and understood. Clients are free to bring their pets and or their children. She offers free wi-fi, complimentary beverages and the highest level of care. When I ask her about style inspiration, Jessica smiles and offers, “Well, my superhero of all time is Sally Herschberger,” a top L.A. stylist. “She’s an amazing stylist. I love her concepts, ideas, the sleek design of her salons.
She has created a hair empire with a team of chosen disciples and well, she’s just amazing.” Because Retskin travels widely and gets her hair styled everywhere she goes as part of her own research and development, she is returning to Albuquerque regularly from London, Milan, New Delhi, Dublin, San Francisco, L.A., Denver, New York, and D.C. with fresh ideas and style inspirations for wide range of clients. Retskin is a self-proclaimed fan of the HBO series The Wire and explains that she has named the cat that lingers by her studio after Stringer Bell. Retskin has three clients in Albuquerque who work in wardrobe, lighting and costume design. Anyone who is looking for time, care, attention, privacy, careful customer service, and extraordinary hair styling and color is wise to call ahead and talk to Jessica about her next available. She’s worth the wait, so book your next hair appointment in Albuquerque before you book your next flight.
